Disability: How To Describe Your Pain

  • More than half of disability claims involve pain, but many patients have difficulty giving a useful description of their pain. Important factors are: location, character, spread, timing, aggravating factors, relieving factors, and how the pain limits your work-related abilities.
Saying your pain is "excruciating" is not enough!

Thank you for this informative video. I’m in a better position to describe the pain I feel to my Doctors

That's great. Keep in mind - the most important thing to describe is how the pain limits your work-related abilities.

Thank you Doctor. I have trouble describing my pain. I get white coat syndrome and try to get out fast. This will help me articulate what is happening.

I’ve done everything you said in your video.
My pain is a constant 8 to the point of vomiting when it spikes.
Laying down and hydrocodone pills is the only things that help. I’m allergic to steroid shots. I’ve done just about everything from PT to injects to corner loc. nothing has worked.
I can’t sit or stand for more than 1-2 hours max.
My pain includes burning, stabbing, cold wet, etc.
You’re describing my symptoms but I also have shooting pains down my right leg along with it knocking me off my feet to the floor if I try to step on it when the pain flares. It is not getting better after 9+ years.
What am I suppose to do now?

So i was diagnosed last year with severe rhumetoid arthritis.. I've been on medication for a long time and i am still not in remission.. i applied for disability and was denied. I am now in the reconsideration stage. I hired a lawyer. Recently i have been diagnosed with bone degeneration and now i need a hip replacement due to over prescribed prednisone.. what are my chances of receiving benefits?

All the best. I’m having trouble with both hips but I’m retiring in 8 months at 62 anyways. I may apply for both and see what happens. Sounds like most people get a lawyer or assistance. GL

I’m a nurse, and I’ve been in healthcare for 25 years and I was wondering if after I apply for disability but can’t continue to do nursing anymore. Will they then think I should find a new career?

I have all over pain due to fibromyalgia it does fluctuate however.

All chronic pain fluctuates. I talked about that in a previous video. In fact, one of the clues to pretending is when a patient with chronic pain states it is always the same, all the time, and nothing affects it.

Hi. Can you address people who want disability for shorter periods of time? I had Kienbock’s disease in my right wrist and had to have bones removed. I was out of work for four months. It’s been 9 months and they still have not given me a decision.

Social Security does not provide short-term disability, so I can't comment. To qualify for Social Security Disability the disabling condition must be present for at least 12 months, or be expected to be present for at least 12 months. In the case of someone who's recently had surgery, it's often impossible to know where they will be at the end of 12 months - doctors are terrible at predicting the future.

Short term disability is usually provided for either via your state program, or via a short term disability policy, if you are paying for one, or if your employer pays for one on your behalf. I hope things worked out for you! Maybe your HR department of where you work could help let you know if you have any options to recover lost funds?

Is Posterior Tibial Tendonitis a condition that might qualify for short/long term disability? Getting to the point where walking and standing for long periods is becoming difficult. Been having this issue for years and its prevented me from keeping many jobs...

    • @DisabilityExams
      @DisabilityExams  4 месяца назад +1

You need to define "long periods". It would make a big difference whether it was 10 minutes or one hour. If you are ovr 50 AND you can't stand or walk for 4 hours per day your application might be successful.

Doc, why do so many of the people you qualify for disability end up selling firewood? Doesn't lifting and splitting wood mean they're really not disabled? Is it because they watched your videos before the interview?
