    The thing I love is that this story sets up so many strong ways to spend that $96,000. Save Rosario's, pay Nina's tuition, launch Vanessa's business, pay for for his own life in the Dominican. But in the end he takes care of Sonny first.

    Just to note, I saw this when it toured years ago, and the Blackout scene was amazing. They literally turned off ALL of the lights in the theatre, even the little walkway dim lights and we thought the whole theatre lost electricity. But then the actors pulled out phones and put on the lights and we all figured it out and we erupted in applause.

      Way to give an even better sense of immersion... you already have Usnavi talking to the audience as a pseudo narrator and that is a little detail that sounds legit

    To your comment about how all the songs sound different. When Lin Manuel started writing "In the Heights" he wanted to give the audience an experience of walking through his neighborhood, where you would hear all types of music out on the street, from hip hop blaring in people' cars, merengue being played by street performers. That is why every song is unique with a different style and genre but still a part of one beautifully cohesive piece.

    I notice that Abuela Claudia took the stairs instead of the ramp, that is a nice subtle way of saying she will always face the challenges that lie ahead instead of taking the easy route.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who found that transition in Paciencia Y Fe a little creepy hahaha. It was fitting in a way though since Abuela Claudia's life was basically flashing through her eyes. That sequence was so wondefully done and there was a bit of creepiness all throughout until that final shot with her finally exiting the station in peace.

    I think I read somewhere the actress who plays Vanessa is a dancer, she’s a dancer who learned to sing for this role. You can tell by her dance scene, she kills it. And her abs.

    While the movie was incredible, there is some criticism over the lack of representation for the Afro-Latino community, because there’s so many light skins in the movie. While there should be an even playing field for both light and dark skinned latinos, I think Lin should still get some credit for even creating it to begin with, and everyone should be grateful for it because while it’s not perfect, it’s creating stepping stones for people to see the Latino community in a better light.

    • @ChillyCucumber

      I really hate the fact that people are complaining about that, though. It’s not like there were more in the musical that got removed for the movie. They just cast the characters appropriately. It’s like complaining that there aren’t enough white people in Black Panther.

    • @iceybby6415
      @iceybby6415 3 года назад +23

      @@ChillyCucumber that’s not an equivalent analogy since black panther takes place in a part of Africa where depicting white people wouldn’t be ideal bc they aren’t apart of the realistic population of people. Washington heights is dominated by Afro Latinos so I see why people are upset. On the other hand I don’t think it was Lin’s intention to not cast Afro Latinos. And I wish people could critique that element without refusing to see the movie or bashing Lin despite his apology as well as the fact that he’s not the casting director. At the end of the day this movie is ground breaking for everyone involved boycotting this movie is only a loss for any chance for better future representation not to mention it is a FANTASTIC movie that is additionally extremely beautiful

    • @ellemars1817
      @ellemars1817 3 года назад +11

      Agree. And I'm not Latino nor have I been to Washington Heights so I'm in no place to properly comment on representation in the film. But I think you can celebrate ITH's achievements while still critiquing its shortcomings in that regard. Maybe that critique is even part of that celebration coz it opens up the discourse for more inclusive representation moving forward. "Canceling" ITH and Lin will do nothing constructive at all, so I don't see why some people are trying to do that.

      @@iceybby6415 There are white people in Africa. The first African I ever met (from Zimbabwe) was the palest boy I have ever seen outside of an albino (speaking of which there is a tribe in Africa full of Albinos). White people are just a minority in most African nations, except possibly for South Africa, and many Africans have lighter complexions than others.
      Hispanic people come in every shade of skin tone and to complain that there weren't enough darker tones in one particular casting feels like someone just looking for a reason to complain. Did they miss the beginning of the movie or the various giant dance scenes where there were plenty of people of all kinds of shades of melanin? Those extras were from Washington Heights, people from that actual neighborhood so complaining about the lack of diversity is really ignorant because that's what that neighborhood looks like.
      As for the main cast, I'm positive Lin-Manuel cast the characters according to their ability to sing and act the character, not what their skin looked like (a lot of these actors were in the Broadway musical at some point so their experience probably played into it too).

    • @iceybby6415
      @iceybby6415 3 года назад +4

      @@sivonni did you read anything I said. I said they aren’t apart of the general population bc nobody is going to Africa expecting to see white people because they don’t make up the population (albino black people/Africans aren’t white) but I didn’t say they were nonexistent. And you are literally restating what I already said. Also I think people are referring to colorism in regards to the core characters not extras
