thank God, i watched your video. My H5 comes tommorow, and i have lav mics and same adaptors as you. I was on direct way to destroy my mics. thanks sir!
This has to be the best video out there on using lav and 3.5 mics without their own power with Zoom recorders. The video was very clear. Thank you so much!
I've had the Zoom H5 for a few years now and I still don't know everything about it. This vid is informative and clearly Gary is knowledgeable about this device. Awesome video Gary.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This greatly improved my ability to use the existing equipment I have (zoom H6) for podcasting in a more cost effective manner. 👊🏾✊🏾👊🏾✊🏾👊🏾
If I plug in 2 lavaliers for example or two microfones.. so.. what about the recorded audio file. There is any option to create 2 diferent audio files for each channel OR all the channels (inputs) are recorded in one single audio file?
Hi Gary, I bought the splitter in the amz link you have. I cannot get my h5 to have 4 channels at the same time like in the video. I have the splitter + 2 lav mics. At the xlr I have to condenser mics with phantom power on 48v. Do they have to be lav mics?
No you can mix mics. Lav mics- There is a setting to turn on plug in power for the lav mics connected to the head. From memory the H5 can record 4 separate microphone tracks but it can only mix 4 inputs to a stereo output to connect to a camera. Cameras only have a stereo input. (2 channels) The settings need to be correctly setup.
I'd like to use the lav mic for recording stand up but would also like to mic the audience. Is it possible that if I use the splitter in the 1/8th " jack I can still record audio out of one of the 2 mics? If not, what's best way to accomplish this? Thanks so much!
I have the zoom f3,vxlr pro, and hollyland lark m1. The wireless tx has its own power so would i shut off the power like your showing or with my protection it is safe to run the 48v w my connection or how should i configure?Till i watche this vid i thought turning off an input would mean no audio😊 correct me if im wrong it just means no power to the mic.Thank you
If the mic needs plug in power the vxlr+ will reduce phantom power to the low voltage you need. You won't hear anything from the mic if it is not powered. Make sure you don't plug a lav mic into a powered socket without reducing the voltage with the adaptor. The voltage output from an XLR phantom powered socket can be 48Volt. A lav mic only needs 2-3volts
Hey! Thank you for the video! I got a question: I have Zoom h5 and Shure MVL - 3.5mm. I followed the instruction, set the plugin power on but still no sound. What could be the reason for that? May it be because there are 3 black lines on the jack and not 2 as on yours?
Yes. You need TRS while you are using TRRS. (purchase a TRRS-TRS adapter. then your connection will work)What is happening is that you have an extra channel(used by mobile phones) making them not align.
Nice video! I want to use a rode videomicro mic plugged in the 1/2 inputs of the H5. Do you know if I can use a 6.3mm (into the H5) to 3.5mm (to mic) jack cable, too? . What type of cable do I need and what type of plygin/phantom power I have to choose? Thanks in advance
Great video Gary. I’ve been making videos in Thailand for a channel called Farangbowl Magazine for 2yrs now to include doing interviews. I also have a Zoom H5N, however, I’ve come across an issue that I wanted to run by you. I have a Rode Wireless GO II that I plug into the top line in of the Zoom, however, when I edit in Post in Premier Pro it won’t let me stereo split the audio left and right which is a right pain in the butt when adjusting levels and EQ. The audio is just a mono recording of the two Rode Mics. Is it not possible to use the Line In like this and better to use an adapter and plug into the bottom of the zoom for a stereo recording? Your thoughts on this are much appreciated!
Not sure which lav mic you are using. Remember it has to be a TRS plug type. Not the 4Pin smartlav type. Also as in the video, Check that plugin power is activated to the X/Y 3.5mm mini jack.
Hi. I've got a h5 zoom. There is some hiss on it. If I turn the level down on the h5 and boost it in my DAW it will still get the same issue. If I use the de-noise it just makes everything bad and underwater. I've tried to use the sm58 mic and attach to h5 still same outcome. It's mainly for ASMR type stuff. How can I resolve this? Should I just bin it all. Lol
Kind of you. You bought the wrong recorder for quiet recordings. The preamps are noisy on the H5. You need something like the (sadly discontinued PCM-D100) or an F3 with external mic.
Great video. Thank you. I have the 'passive' 3.5mm to XLR converter. It only works with the Boya microphone that has a battery integrated in it. When I try Rode's Lavalier microphone (no battery), Zoom h5 doesn't pick any sound. Is there a way to power those Rode lav mics? Or another way to make them work? I don't want to plug them into the XY5 , but want to use 2 lavalier microphones plugged in to the XLR inputs. Thank you for your help

Very helpful video, thank you! Exactly what I needed.
Amazingly clear instructions. Wish Zoom explained it as well in the user manual.
Just received my Zoom and had these exact questions on my mind. Brilliant video with excellent detail! Thanks for putting it together!
Wonderful! I never knew it would cook the lag mics! 🎉
thank you so much!!! I've been looking for this information for so long
Just what I needed! Great! Thank you.
Glad it helped!
Congratulations Gary, very nice and thorough explanation
Thank you Gary, very well explained, greetings from Germany Michael👍
Great video- Couldn't get the Rode Lav to work, your video showed me why.cheeers
Excellent video with minor details included. I love the way you explained. Thank you.

Super helpful, thanks Gary! 🙂
Thanks so much! I learnt a lot. Gary .... Thanks for the excellent video!
Thank you so much. Very good and easy explained video.
Thank you for your presentation. Your advice on connecting a xlr cable to my camera via the 3.5mm trs cable what do you suggest I need?
Thanks so much! I learnt a lot. Your video was very informative, clear and to the point.

I have the same question

Excellent presentation and absolutely not ‘so hard to follow’ as one commenter curiously commented……..
Thank you so so much for the info!!!
Can i plug 3.5mm dynamic microphone without phantom power converter? Does it work just by xlr to 3.5mm convertor?
Yes a dynamic mic does not need phantom power. A simple XLR to 3.5mm adaptor will do it. Not the best match but it should work.
Nice, i use a adapter Boya 35C-XLR Pro, very userful

Do contact mics like the korg c300 need phantom power grom the device?plz
would i be able to shoot timecode through it as one of the inputs using a tentacle sync?
Why when I use the Lavalier microphone on the L/R input does it sound only on one channel, that is, the left?
I have the zoom f3,vxlr pro, and hollyland lark m1. Great video.. Thanks
Very good. Thank you.
Can I use both the top and bottom inputs simultaneously? I'd like to plug in two lavs and two Xlr mics. thank you in advance for your response.
Yes H5 allows 2 XLRs and top input (in stereo) to be used at once.
wow so good.. thanks,, Gary
wow so good
Good to hear you enjoyed the video Teach Browser.
If I use a lav mic like the Sennheiser Me II with the VXLR+ without phantom power turned on my Zoom H6, will it still work or no?

best forrecording in zoom before - 12 ? ??
I guess One can use a dynamic lav/ mic with the standard adaptor?
Thanx!
I appreciate your feedback Michal.

Yes same as video. The VideoMicro uses plug-in power like a lav mic. You just have to be sure the adapter is not stereo.

when using as usb interface ,
can not use lav mic ?
ia that ordinary?
You definitely can use a lav mic when setup as audio interface. You just can't use the recording function of the H5 in this mode.
@@GaryDmedia but can only use the built in zoom mic xy not rode lav mic
@@GaryDmedia should i setup drivers again ?

Yea the more expensive Rode VXLR+ Adapter. It konverts the Phantom Power to the needed Low voltage plug in Power
Hi. Are do u have problems with a constant his on your h5 thanks.
this is a good video but your too quiet
so hard to follow
