It covers all the basics of a house, from plumbing to electricity. It also has some cool floor plans of some of the most popular tiny homes out there. I had a blast reading this book and learning so much. The only thing that bugged me was that the description said it had floor plans, but it didn't say how few there were.
Why does Jamie seem so smart without even trying. Always impressive watching him come up with solutions to problems.

As a woman who works in residential construction, it's a breath of fresh air to see y'all treat the clients and each other with respect while still not taking things too seriously and having a good time. I've unfortunately seen contractors financially take advantage of clients, contractors who don't take pride in their work, and I've had difficulty finding individuals to work with who don't make inappropriate comments to me as a female. Your crew is lucky to have bosses whom they can also call friends. I also really enjoy seeing how you all continually evolve, working with new and innovative products. I've watched nearly every one of your videos and will continue to do so. You've got a fan in Nashville!

The difference between Galvanized and Galvalume steel is that GALVANIZED has a pure zinc coating while GALVALUME has a mixture of Zinc, Aluminum and silicon. This mixture gives Galvalume better corrosion resistance and durability also a much longer lasting lifespan twice that of Galvanized
What's the difference between galvalume and zincalume?
@@rachelhunting Zincalume has magnesium rather than silicon in the coating which would make the Galvalume longer lasting by my estimation.
We use the same type of stuff in Australia and I can say with confidence it is tough AF. Sun, storms, hail as big as fists, wind that could blow a dog off it's chain......just eats is all day!

I only want to cover one topic in this video, which concerns gutters and downpipes to cope with rainwater.
Obviously, we don't know what you decided on doing, as the video finished before we got a chance to see how things panned out.
So, does your customer intend to use some form of rainwater storage? If not, then perhaps you should suggest to her the importance of recycling water!
Don't stop reading, hear me out first, then make a decision.
If she had the right system installed, taking into account the large roof she has, which is perfect to catch rainwater. She could have enough water stored to last her and a partner all year.
Perhaps you will do what most people do, which is to simply place your downpipes, allowing rainwater to flow from the pipe over the ground, which seems to be the usual concensus in the USA, wasting water.
Here in the UK, we're encouraged to use rainwater for our plants and vegetables and for use with outdoor animals, which is what we do. We have 30 goats, 25 geese, 31 egg producing chickens, and an aditional 40 chickens for meat and 2 cocks.
So, I thought as my bungalow is 64 feet long by 32 feet wide, with a pitched roof, that I would explain how my roofing contractor overcame the downpipe situation, over such a long distance, considering I wanted at least two very large waterbuts.
What he decided to do first was find information on the largest rainwater storage systems available here in the UK for home use and start from there.
During his search, he established that with the right system, it was possible for us to drink the rainwater safely all year round.
The largest single waterbuts available here in the UK hold 2,000 litres or about 440 imperial gallons, quite big then.
However, there are tanks much larger that can be placed above or below ground that connect to each other using gravity flow or, better still, solar powered.
We decided on having tanks placed below ground to help keep the water cool in summer and prevent it from freezing in winter. I also had a solar powered system put in that works in conjunction with the electricity company.
Power stored in the six batteries is enough to power the whole house with everything running but not during winter, which is why we remained connected to the grid.
The solar powered pump first pumps water from the tanks to a water purification system and then to our home so that we can drink the water safely.
As the tanks were to be stored underground, I was advised for my situation that four would be more than plenty to supply enough water for four people 24/7.
Each of my tanks holds a minimum of 3,600 gallons. Connected, that's more than enough water for two adults and a 15 year old son to shower every day. Enough water to meet with every demand such as flushing toilets, cooking, cleaning, dishwasher, and washing machine with plenty of water to spare.
The complet system, including solar powered water pump and purification system, costs less than our water rates for one year and came with a 10 year guarantee.
The tanks, pipes, fittings, and purification system are all made from 100% recycled materials, all except the surgical still within the purification system.
Recycled stainless steel and wooden inserts used to secure the tanks treated with a water-resistant covering and guaranteed to last a minimum of 100 years.
In view of our climate situation and to do our part in helping with it, we went with this idea.
Your client could have just one downpipe on each side of her property. Locating the pipes in such a way that they feed any number of water storage containers placed above or below ground under the house in that area, which slopes and us otherwise, usless!
If that was my house, that's exactly where I would place the water containers, with the purification system, and pump, all underground and out of sight so as not to freeze during winter and keep cool during summer.
If having the tanks underground is not possible, then still place them in that area. In the end, she will be saving thousands of dollars each month each year, not giving it to the water company.
Even the power would be free, solar power, solar batteries. Win win.
I am now contemplating switching over to solar power completely with additional wind power. There is also a stream at the foot of my property, but I don't think it's fast enough to generate the hydro equipment.

Kudos to you Perkins Brothers! One of the best investments you are making is connecting with the HOS President (poor guy) and being up front on the planned outage (I used to deal with these when I was an electrical utility engineer). Being able to connect a neighbor (with water) is a great way to gain “political capital” and make some new friends. It’s never an easy situation when you take an outage, but Jaime is making the best of it! Just speaking from my own decades of experience, and you guys are doing a great job (as you always do).
Please give Ray a mail gun or something comparable. I felt so bad when Jason got one and he didn’t. Ray is your secret weapon for perfection!

Just going to put it out there that I have a 6in wide, 18in long core bit. I needed a vent hole for a range exhaust, got quoted $600 so I bought the bit for like $180 and did it myself. Cut through masonry block and a brick facade like butter.
You guys are great. I wish you would do a brief history in how your guys came to end up as Perkins Crew.

One thing I noticed of note.
You may want to watch out for galvanic corrosion where the galvalume flashing is in contact with your custom copper end caps.
Dissimilar metals can corrode very quickly when there is an electrolyte (such as water) present.
I just looked it up. Galvalume is steel with a 55% aluminum and 43% zinc coating. Copper and aluminum are highly susceptible to galvanic corrosion, so great point that they should check it out if they'll be in contact. Zinc is not a problem.

We've been keeping up with the Perkins Brothers videos for a while now over here at OX. Big fans of them, we thought it was time for a proper send out👍
I was screaming at the screen that you forgot the base! Thank goodness they split like that.
Notice how they are screwing down the roof in the low valleys, which means there is a higher chance of the roof leaking on the screw fasteners.
In NZ and AU most roofs both rib line and corrugated iron roofs are screwed down on the high ridges so that there is less chance of the roof leaking.
Given how the metal sheets are shaped, locating the screws in the valleys should actually ensure a better seal in this case. And even if it doesn't, the self-sealing stuff they installed underneath should take care of any leaks.

My brother has had a roofing business for years that his 2 sons run now and the ridges are there specifically for screwing the roofing down. You should not be qualified as a roofer if you don't understand the basics of roofing!!! No matter what country you are a roofer in. Many metal roof panel styles specify screwing in the flats next to the ribs. They are following manufacture requirements.

I did a project with Gavallume roof panels and they will naturally “age” once installed. They have an oily coating on them that naturally wears off and they will get a tiny patina to them. The architect on my job thought something was wrong with the roof but the metal company explained that it is supposed to happen like that. That roof has been on for about 18 months and still has just the slightest patina to it, it didn’t continue to get darker.
We have ox’s in the uk they are very good quality tools and are reasonably priced you will enjoy using them

In NZ this type of ribbed or corrugated coloursteel roofing is the most popular by far. Very few felt rooves are installed here, maybe something to do with the weather. There are examples of galvanised steel corrugated roofing lasting 100 years here and still being in excellent condition.

I worked installing roofing on a number of buildings in Auckland a while back and we would always fix through the crests of the roofing steel
My brother owns a roofing business with his 2 sons here in SEQueensland Australia (we're originally Kiwis) and the screws ALWAYS go in the ridge NEVER the valleys !!!! This is to ensure water has no chance of leaking should it accumulate in the valleys; as its impossible for it to pool on the ridges. The variance in size also supports this . The original corrugated iron roofing had them equal sizes with the ridge being used for the lead-headed nails back in the day. Today's style tends to be more a broader, wider valley with a much smaller ridge designed specifically for the screws to attach it securely.
From experience doing it on the ridges just causes deformation anyways allowing a little area for water tension to keep the water there and Id say in a country that has much higher wind speeds you wanna be able to just send it anyways. Plus roofing screws have an o-ring anyways so Id hazard a guess and say its actually just better to do it where you want have any wiggle room.
I’m surprised that no one’s using standing seam style roofing in the US.
Our aussie colorbond stuff looks amazing and we even use it to clad the walls as an architectural feature (like on my garage).
Fixes down with concealed brackets and crimping too so there are no visible fasteners

@@heatherclayton-callaghan4270 Not true. Most manufacturer's recommend screwing the panels on the flats. Sometimes both the flats and the ribs.
Screws go on the flats. The panels are not secure to the substrate otherwise, and you cannot tighten screws on the ribs enough for the washer to compress properly.

When installing surface mount deck posts, use the corner feature on the torpedo level. Takes all the guess work out of it
Deck rails looking good, and relatively easy to install upright thanks to the fixings, that they thought about. The roofing sheets look like the ones I put on my large shed in my previous property. Easy to install and had rubber washers to stop any ingress of water. Worked very well without any sign of oxidation on the metal walls and roof. Glad to see you back, be safe and well 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨

Again I feel the need to mention I don't live in the carolinas but in ohio glavalum is galvanized aluminum used primarily in commercial siding or pole barn roofing and siding. I just installed some as siding on a commercial warehouse in 2023.

That smooth texture on the roofing panels is an acrylic coating applied during manufacturing to protect the panel surfaces prior to application and will eventually erode off the surface.
My only concern with the exposed fasteners on the metal roof is that typically you have to either tighten or replace those screws after a few years due to the heat cycling that causes the screws to loosen and the weathering that occurs on the screw "gasket" I worked for a metal roof company here in Michigan (snow, ice) and they only use the hidden fastener system as opposed to the exposed fasteners for that problem, eventually the exposed roof screws will leak....if not maintained properly, just fyi guys

I am building an addition to my cabin just a couple miles from this Perkins build. I have been by there a few times to see how it is going. Very impressed. I need to figure out how to "borrow" Ray and Jason for a couple days to give ne a hand lol.
Those sheets look like the ZinkAlume sheeting we use in South Africa. Can tell by the dull finish compared to galvanized. Its a Zink and Aluminium alloy coating that is superior to your standard galvanized coating. We also get them pre painted over the ZinkAlume coating.

Just put a metal roof on a small shed. The supplier recommended putting all screws on the ridges not on the flats to prevent future leaks?
The ribs are more for "oil canning". there are obviously tons of metal roofing and siding products out there, the galvalume is a zinc, alum, silicon coating so yeah not far from a non-stick. Still looking forward to seeing the detail that they choose to do around the windows.

when we installed my metal roof we used a witness edge, basically a ledge you but the metal panels up to and its level and aligned all the way through.
That Ox 22 Oz looked like a mean hammer, except for the jazzercise blue. I'll stick with my Milwaukee 22.
