I was a construction laser dealer before I retired. I have a tip for you for future reference. I noticed your PLS5 is an older one, Made in America. They were made by PLS back then & were pretty good. They cannot be repaired or re-calibrated only replaced. However, if you ever need to replace yours DO NOT replace it with another PLS pin or line laser. The company was sold to Fluke & the mfgr of these was outsourced to China. The Chinese made Fluke ones were so bad (we were sending half back to Fluke that were bad) that we just quit selling them completely. Side note: If you want to check calibration on yours set it on the ground, turn it on, & center it on a mark on the ground & make a mark on the ceiling (preferably 12-15 feet away. Some masking tape & a Sharpie will do) then turn it 180 degrees. If the laser does not point right to the same spot, it is out of calibration. If it's out vertical, it's out horizontal too. It cannot be re-calibrated.

I have a bosch made for flooring guys that shoots (2) 90deg. continuous lines on the floor and (1) 45deg. line if you want it to ,or ,the 45deg. line can stay off. Its self leveling and a fairly strong beam to! I shot it across a studio sound stage probably about 3-4 hundred feet and I could read it fine. I have another self leveling one I bought at lowes about 30 yrs ago that I use for walls. It shoots level and plumb lines and still works fine and it can be recalibrated! Just dont ever drop them!

Yeah! Finally one DIY garage videos that I can use in my house remodel, instead of kicking myself for how I did something in the past. I was just starting on planning redoing the rails on my back deck. Looking great guys.
Like the idea of the white on the ceiling. Matches the side of the garage, same contrast with the bronze lights/fan. Would worry about pine taking the stain differently. Railing system looks great!

@@Mr.Saltwater Well slap me silly and teach me a thing or two... Never, ever, ever would I have thought of painting a porch ceiling blue to keep wasps away! Thanks!
Man, the sweat equity in this house is insane. The difference between (a) your time and materials and (b) market value is (c) bananas. You guys could start building/ renovating and selling spec homes as a channel.
Paul, gotta say we’re on the same wavelength… as your boys were talking jig for the bottom rail, I was thinking exactly what you came up with! Experience pays off.
I've used Cabot quite a bit at home, and love it. I've even used their black semi-transparent stain on textured cinderblock to create an accent wall in a basement room where I did not want to cover that wall (due to an addition, it was an interior wall anyways, and with the black stain, it made a nice accent wall while saving me the work of framing out a beauty wall over it, and losing a few inches of room), and it has held up great in every application.
That argument between the three of you deciding which is the best / easiest way of transferring a center - I love that! Also, 40min video? Unless you beat the LOtR extended trilogy, it's still too short for me!
Wow, didn't realize as I watched it that it was 40 min.. Well done with the pacing. Just enough content to not have viewers bored, yet still packing a lot of useful information. I will never need to install a balcony railing, but still enjoyed every minute of the lessons learned.
It happened to me a bunch of times with other channels as well, thisoldtony, veritasium. It shows how quality content flies fast, but you still can't have enough of it
On the ceiling: Pre-finish the wood on both sides. It will stand up better, and don't forget the joints. Great instruction video. Of course, all holes line up with nails. That's how it goes.
Wow. That railing looks great! Big “W” for Envision. That 2-part top rail will definitely make lighting a breeze. As for the porch ceilings I have mixed thoughts. I think more cedar with the same stain would look the best, and help keep pests out. Even that white would look good. However, if you’re going to put fans out on the deck and patio, you will be better off using a dark color to hide the dirt/dust. Based on that, I would either go with stained cedar (using lap joints) or black painted poplar or pine.
Big fan 😂 of the Fanimation Belt Driven Brewmaster. There’s something hypnotic about lining three of them up perfectly and having the fans spin at exactly the same speed with blades perfectly in synch. All off one motor.
I love this channel, and this video in particular. Just the way pops said "but this is real life" and then all the spur of the moment issues that need to be solved. His skill/knowledge 100% makes a massive difference, but even if he wasnt as clean and masterful as he is, i think one of the real true marks of a craftsman (especially carpentry) is your ability to think on the fly and overcome hurdles. To do so cleanly is a different level of experience but its gotta start with you just thinking "i can fix this" or "i can work around this". Love that you guys not only keep, but put some focus on these hiccups that are legitimate parts of any type of trade or craft but that a lot of other channels might edit out to make the video look more "produced" and perfect. Man i love watching you guys, you always pick up stuff from seeing another dude think about these things, and no matter how much you know you'll never stop being impressed by little tips or logic used. A mark of a true craftsman is that "i can solve this" but arguably the biggest mark of master carpentry is being able to hide any evidence of issues, whether your fault or not 😂
What I really love about your channel is that you explain each step for a DIY'er, AND you show us the things that we can run into (and WILL). How to recover from the unexpected is key to doing a great job. Thanks!
You are an encouragement to me. I respect the fact that you are not and can admit you are not perfect. You have taught me a lot, and I love watching your videos.
I would go with the light sky blue for the ceiling. Only because you already had a hornet nest built on the underside of your roof sheathing. But with how this build is shaping up I am sure you all will do a great looking job in what ever color you use
My wife and I have been watching since you started talking about this build and this video just made her day, we've been debating on railing for our new porch we are building and her mind is made up. Order for railing sent today and I have a great heads up on installing. You guys are awesome.
Wife & I built our Ohio house in 2006 with Haint Blue porch ceilings. Our builder had never heard of it being done before. Their research confirmed that we were right with my parents coming from western Kentucky. Keep up the good work.
Apart from the genius 'on the fly' solutions to problems that arise, it's very obvious that having the right tools makes any job easier. I love all the specialty tools. Great content guys!
I love the pipes in the railing. I know someone that used 3/4 EMT. The ends were secured with drilled out wooden plates, attached to the posts. Very handy for areas with drastically changing temperatures. It has that bright look to it, without the cable hassles.
The middle section has the thicker middle black post, but the section on the left (as viewed from backyard) has the skinny black bar post. I am not sure, but I might prefer consistency and use the thick black posts for all sections that need middle support.
@@StudPack correct, I am just suggesting to use the posts in all three sections, instead of just the middle section. I realize it is not structurally necessary, but just for consistency.
Old carpentry trick for punching the center of those holes, get a wooden dowel the exact size you need, cut a plug off, drill a hole in the center the size of your center punch, then set the plug in the hole with the center punch in it and make your mark. No expensive punches.
We are visiting the daughters in Asia, and I’m watching your videos. One of the girls started watching and now SHE’s addicted too. Your garage / shop / apartment is looking amazing!
How does your pricing compare to Westbury Tuscany? My contractor likes this product for quality and ease of install however I like your horizontal design more. @@envisionoutdoorlivingproducts
Man, you gotta love being able to work with your sons... they were so appreciative of you, and great to see that they can kid and you can take it. What a great family. Nice job on the project too.
@36:15. Wait..I could have sworn I saw Paul use a right angle adapter before. Having said that, a low profile wrench is a MUST. I love the set from Wera. Every bit and socket you need (for small projects) and it comes with a few other goodies.

Ceiling wise for color idea..... I just done mine with Cypress columns but a red brick house (ceiling done in pine), and I used a stain that was dark enough to give a good contrast without being too dark. (My wife picked it out), and it looks absolutely beautiful! Could not be happier. Then I finished it off with a tung oil made for exterior use to seal everything. LOVE IT
Im surprized that those horizontal rails meet code. Typically those would be considered climbably and would not be compatible with current building codes for the same reason as the 4" rule you mentioned. Typically you would have a top and bottom rail, with pickets (balusters) vertically so that kids etc cannot climb up and over.
For the porch ceilings you may want to consider using purple board sheetrock. My builder used green board on a house I had built in Magnolia, TX (25 years ago because purple was not available then) and the result was awesome. It looks much better than hardy siding or wood strips. A light texture on it and a good coat of paint and will last forever and you won’t see any seams. You won’t be disappointed. And the cost may actually be less than the wood. Y’all are awesome and do great work. Can’t wait to see all of the exciting details you have coming next!!
Came out absolutely magnificently! Thanks for sharing all your mishaps. None of us are perfect on the first go around.. this garage build is EPIC! Stud Pack to infinity and beyond!
I like the idea of the wood to blend in your cedar posts, it would also be a good way to use that $55 seal paint you bought for the caps. Really like the look of the railing, it is coming together so well. You guys are really knocking it out of the park.
I think make it the same color of the wall. I like the way the led lighting changes the color of the walls. It's very cool. W for envision. It looks amazing. My uncle the machinist used to lathe his own custom center punches for his jobs. He's gone now but I have a ton of those center punches he made. Always watching for the next video. Your father is amazing.
Sky blue for the ceiling would be traditional and look great. Black would look AMAZING and modern to key off the railings, light fixtures, and windows. White (house paint) would be my third choice but look nicely complete and integrated. The only thing I would NOT recommend is the cedar staining. The beauty of those cedar columns is their contrast with everything else. They are more of a statement if only the cedar posts carry that statin. That’s my two-cents. The whole build is shaping up nicely. It’s a real pleasure watching your beautiful family bring this idea into reality. Cheers and continued success.
I was thinking painting ceiling color of house but sounds like people are on to something with the blue for bugs and stuff just don’t know how that look. But I know whatever you guys decide will look amazing. Keep up good work guys and Jordan u have came a long way with your filming it’s on another level since first few videos on the channel I’ve been watching u guys since the start keep it up.
You got alot of that stain left, so might as well use it up on the ceiling. I think you guys got me sold on these railings instead of cables. Good show.👍
Been watching for little over a year now - this build is such a fun ride your taking us on. I always look forward to the next upload - got my mum into it now as well haha. Neither of us are in any construction or trades but its just such enjoyable content and I love seeing how stuff works as much as just the general family vibe. Often watch the new uploads when in the office, my coworkers think I'm weird with some video playing of construction/cutting into timber playing on the side - doesn't bother me the least haha. Hi from Australia
The best wasp nest treatment I’ve found is a healthy squirt of dawn dish soap with water mixed up in a spray bottle (if just a few) or garden sprayer from a distance for a larger nest. If underground, just squirt the dawn directly into the nest and immediately follow it up with a hose. No harsh chemicals and kills the suckers instantly - way faster than any product and the big box stores. About 10:1 for regular and about 15:1 for the platinum (seems like old school dawn). Important to do this after the sun goes down so they are less active!
Absolutely love the Envision Decking. The aesthetics are definitely keeping with the rest of the exterior fit/finish of the garage. The attention to detail blows me away.
Since you're using cedar, I would use it instead of the pine tong and grove. Then use the remaining stain that you just purchased to do the upper deck. Bottom ceiling should not matter much. Make the upper ceiling match the post. Will give it a nice look.
I think doing a cedar wood ceiling with the same stain with recessed lighting trimmed in a dark color and a dark wood or black fan would look awesome! I agree with some other comments that the smaller support bars on the left and right of center sections should probably be replaced with the thicker posts to give a balanced look to the railing.
Your local OSHA representative, after having his face in his palm for the last few months, peered his eye over his thumb, shook his head and said “finally they put up that damn safety railing” 😎
35:58 - if you had two more of those intermediate posts that you were willing to sacrifice to make a tool / jig, you could cut those two to height and then make open ended slots so that you could run the balusters through for assembly and then slide the two supports off once completed.
I think you should do the roof of the patio black, BUT you should also add a starry night fiber optic ceiling to make it extra special, the same roof effect they put in rolls royces. I bought a kit for ~$250, it's not a difficult install and the wow factor is +1000x. Years later I've never gotten tired of it. It's also done in home theatre rooms so there's lots of resources for finding supplies and how-to content. So far I'm 2/2 on choices, I suggested the wider slats and plain tiles
I’m late to this video but the railing looks great. The Studpack LED Garondo is looking spectacular! I noticed the lights inside on the wall I think it was purple and blue and looks great. I think white for the T&G ceiling would look great and make it pop. Hope everyone had a nice Father’s Day.
I vote for the cedar stain for the ceiling and doing the same for the bottom section. However, do a test stain on the pine because stain always looks different depending upon the type of wood.
for the porch ceilings, you could use a semi-transparent stain (e.g. blue, white, etc.) and that way you keep the rustic look with the wood grain showing, protect the wood, and still have some color. Great video guys.

It confuses the hell out of then. They think it's the sky
Absolutely. All of my house soffits are sky blue. In 4 years I've never had a wasp nest. In one year before I painted it I had a lot of them
Any light blue shade?
Sky blue ceiling color !
You guys rock!!
The music was fantastic on this vid! I for one really appreciate the effort you put into these vlogs, Jordan!! Thank you, sir!!
I'm digging the idea of a sky blue ceiling. That railing looks amazing, I'm going to look into that for a project I have coming up!
It shows how quality content flies fast, but you still can't have enough of it
This series and another guy in Maine who's renovating his family's 130 year old summer "camp" are my two MUST watch follows.
I only watch that other one for the tentacles.
😂 me too
What’s the name of the other channel
I'm glad I'm not the only one that pre-drills for self-tappers...
A mark of a true craftsman is that "i can solve this" but arguably the biggest mark of master carpentry is being able to hide any evidence of issues, whether your fault or not 😂
Thanks oldking we really appreciate that!!
Paul you have a gift. I did like the guy’s idea but man you blew it out of the park
What I really love about your channel is that you explain each step for a DIY'er, AND you show us the things that we can run into (and WILL). How to recover from the unexpected is key to doing a great job. Thanks!
Jordan, you forgot 1 thing: Classic Rad: flip flops, over the edge, “hanging by his fingertips”. 😂
classic Rad is of course shirtless, too, lol
I will never wear flip-flops again when I’m messing around on a ladder or anywhere I could fall. I don’t wanna talk about why. 😅
I wear flip flops whenever possible. But it's stupid to where them at a construction site.
I like the light blue ceiling thought.
Wife & I built our Ohio house in 2006 with Haint Blue porch ceilings. Our builder had never heard of it being done before. Their research confirmed that we were right with my parents coming from western Kentucky. Keep up the good work.
Cloudy sky blue ceiling. Matte finish. 💯
Apart from the genius 'on the fly' solutions to problems that arise, it's very obvious that having the right tools makes any job easier. I love all the specialty tools. Great content guys!
Paul is the McGyver. Never saw anyone solve every situation like Paul. Would love to see his toll chest.
Thinking the same…
We had to use the post because the railing comes in 10 foot max lengths
@@StudPack correct, I am just suggesting to use the posts in all three sections, instead of just the middle section. I realize it is not structurally necessary, but just for consistency.
@@xamarinmaster1403 I was going to say the same thing, it just looks off to me.
Old carpentry trick for punching the center of those holes, get a wooden dowel the exact size you need, cut a plug off, drill a hole in the center the size of your center punch, then set the plug in the hole with the center punch in it and make your mark. No expensive punches.
I’d definitely go with “haint blue” for the porch ceilings.
We are visiting the daughters in Asia, and I’m watching your videos. One of the girls started watching and now SHE’s addicted too. Your garage / shop / apartment is looking amazing!
I’m a fan of that railing. Looks high quality, no more worrying about you guys falling.
We love hearing that. It's our Fairway Railing Collection. 4-inch samples available on our website.
The light blue color on the southern porches is called "Haint Blue". Loads of stories of its origins
Yeah, it haint blue lol!
@36:15. Wait..I could have sworn I saw Paul use a right angle adapter before. Having said that, a low profile wrench is a MUST. I love the set from Wera. Every bit and socket you need (for small projects) and it comes with a few other goodies.
Incredible detail work Paul THATS PRIDE God Bless an Jordan An Brad Embrace every second u guys spend next to Paul is not every day any man alive can say they did a project of this magnitude with their Father An Father in law Cherished it An May God Bless u all 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Ceiling wise for color idea.....
The deck looks FANTASTIC! Just don't close up the "attic" until you figure out your bug screen. Great channel!
Great video. Can't go wrong with a light blue paint above.
Blue ceiling! It will be fantastic!
That would be kinda cool. Blue and Orange (cedar) are complimentary colors also.
They used to use in on the Victorian porches to keep bugs away
Came out absolutely magnificently! Thanks for sharing all your mishaps. None of us are perfect on the first go around.. this garage build is EPIC! Stud Pack to infinity and beyond!
Studpack Paul for President. America needs you
I like the idea of the wood to blend in your cedar posts, it would also be a good way to use that $55 seal paint you bought for the caps. Really like the look of the railing, it is coming together so well. You guys are really knocking it out of the park.
Look forward to your videos every week. Like I said definitely hitting a milli subs this year
I think I said that before lol Jordan can look into it... love you guys
Deck looking great well done Stud pack crew.
Ceilings on a porch should always be a classic blue. It's functional and classy.
35:00 That's why he's the boss
Loved it!
I just love watching all three of you so much.
Good show.👍
I vote for light blue ceilings in both locations. It definitely keeps the bugs away. I did it here in Maine and works well.
I like the ceiling matching the wall. Might look pretty good
I think so too. Only because I'd be worried about adding another colour
Father Knows Best. Envision W.
Wowza! Happy father's day Paul!
Stain the porch ceiling !! That will make all the wood seamless and look very high custom!!
Absolutely love the Envision Decking. The aesthetics are definitely keeping with the rest of the exterior fit/finish of the garage. The attention to detail blows me away.
The saw not being on killed me 😅
It's almost like an "in" joke with them. Will the saw turn on *this* time and stay running? Lol
That railing and horizontal ballustrade is truly icing on the cake making this house look great! well done
Horizontal balusters is such a slick looking infill.
Bout time!! I was having withdrawals!!!
Same here!
Since you're using cedar, I would use it instead of the pine tong and grove. Then use the remaining stain that you just purchased to do the upper deck. Bottom ceiling should not matter much. Make the upper ceiling match the post. Will give it a nice look.
Haint Blue!!!!!👍
I think doing a cedar wood ceiling with the same stain with recessed lighting trimmed in a dark color and a dark wood or black fan would look awesome! I agree with some other comments that the smaller support bars on the left and right of center sections should probably be replaced with the thicker posts to give a balanced look to the railing.
Your local OSHA representative, after having his face in his palm for the last few months, peered his eye over his thumb, shook his head and said “finally they put up that damn safety railing” 😎
They just needed to commit all the fall protection violations to do it 😆
And he's now biting his fingernails about flip flops at a construction site.
Oh that would be fantastic!!!
Do that gasoline in a cup TikTok trick to get rid of that wasps’ net 😈
