One idea about the ceiling color is that you could maybe paint white only the ceiling boards that are on the outside of the posts and that extend out to the facia boards. That would make the pine posts pop without the inside ceiling being painted white. It would also leave the pine ceiling a nice contrast to the white siding.
I vote for painting the ceiling a very light sky-colored blue. I think light blue would make the ceiling seem to merge with the sky and seem to disappear. And, it would give the deck a more open feeling. I suggest something like Sherwin-Williams Cloudless-SW6786. But of course they should get samples of a couple of different tints and try them out just like they did with the house paint and trim samples on the front of the garage. If Jordan wanted to see the full effect without committing to covering up the stain, he could put up a temporary false ceiling with some sheets of 1/8-inch hardwood plywood and paint that.
Countersink 4 holes on the access panel and epoxy some small magnets in there. Affix a thin piece of metal to the top of the T&G boards to hold that panel down without being permanently attached. Keep the wind from blowing it up into the ceiling.
Rad is going to need to keep his shirt on. My wife is suddenly interested in building. Sorry, but the timing is too perfect to not talk about Paul giving that led light the ol' hauk tuah.
On the access panel, did you consider putting magnets to help keep it closed during high winds? Being out in the weather, I know it won't keep it closed in hurricane type winds, but the sever afternoon shower, it should help. I would also consider a string on the panel so if the wind does pop it up into the ceiling, it would allow you to retrieve it without having to remove boards. Everything looks so nice, I would hate to see this carpentry damaged by a storm next week. Also on the stain choice, it is easier to paint it later, but to not like the paint, the stain afterward would be near impossible. Good idea to do stain first.
Knocked another one out of the park. About your access hatches. You may want to put magnets or magnetic cabinet locks or a spring latch on the inside to hold the hatch down so up drafting wind doesn’t blow them out. Otherwise great show.
Hearing you talk about the power needed for the porch reminded me of something. I don't know if Jordan is a big Christmas light kind of guy, but I have outlets installed on the bottom of my eaves in the front with a dedicated switch in the house. It makes for pretty easy ans seamless Christmas light installation and no janky timers or extension cords hanging down the front of the house.
I'm glad your comment included "it's your house so do what makes you happy" because I "intended" to include it in my comment but it was long enough already. Besides, more comments help the channel (hopefully generating more revenue for StudPack!!).
Jordan, I actually voted for the classic light blue porch ceiling, however now that it is stained and installed I would suggest you wait for the wood tone to age a little to see how the final color turns out.
I just finished a new deck and have done a bunch of research on deck stains. Pretty sure you won't be able to paint over the Cabot oil base stain unless you strip all the stain off first. Not fun especially working over head but luckily, it does look awesome!! Thank you for another great video.
Fun fact. It’s been 1 year 2 days since you all posted the first framing video. And I’ve watched every video since. Can’t wait for the house build next!
One more video in the vault guys, excellent job, notwithstanding the Chippendales undertones...haha For future reference, AZEK makes a clear PVC glue for gluing scarf/end joints together, and believe me, the boards will break before the joints...truly some miracle stuff! I would suggest using some magnets for your access panels, as the Texas breezes will definitely scatter them everywhere you can't reach. Another suggestion is to use some clear Lexcel on your end gaps. I'd hate to see a Stud Pack video on the world's largest hornet nest removal... Keep up the great progress guys!!!
Glad to see that you discovered the Bow Xtender table saw ancillary fence. Great product for contractor’s saws and gives you an extra hand for in feed and outfeed support. Don’t paint that cedar ceiling! Stain is so much easier to maintain. AZEK also makes a proprietary PVC cement that makes a scarf joint and your corners virtually invisible.
I'm a minute in, but I want to comment. When I was four years old I fell off of a second-story balcony over the railing and onto gravel. I actually remember it. My grandmother was pointing out some birds and I was straining to see them, leaned a little too far, and down I went. 40 years later I can remember the gravel rushing toward me and my grandmother running down the stairs to get to me. They took me to the hospital and, miraculously, I had a heck of a welt and a good concussion but no permanent damage. I cannot imagine how my parents felt. I will never begrudge anyone the extra time to install adequate and safe railings. The rules and requirements are there for a reason, and the engineers that write them have extremely good reasons for doing so. Thank you for taking care of your youngsters. They are adorable.
First of all, fantastic progress. I think that wait until you get the other ceiling on before making a choice about painting it white... I think it looks great, but I can also see what you're talking about painting it white. You have time on your side and can always paint it later... and by then you might like it.
11:51 You may want to spray some foam to close the gap between the box & the boards or you'll run the risk of having a hornet universe residing up there.
I was gonna say "I'm sure whatever fixture they put there will seal that," but then I realized there's a joint right there, still, that critters might like to crawl into...
@@mitchk7655 Fake bald face hornet nests work pretty well, but only for that species. Others, including yellow jackets ... not so much. Been there, done that.
I really hope Jordan is paying you and Rad for all of the time you are spending on this project. I have been watching your channel for a couple of years now and I'm simply amazed at how dad (Paul) is always thinking several steps ahead.
Been watching you guys for a while, love your work. I normally don’t comment on anything but I felt compelled to say how great the pine looks. It would be a shame to paint! But i’m just a just an architect tho, all I know is how to piss off contractors lol Keep up the amazing work!
MR Jordan the 3 colors bounce, rustic appeal in the back of the garage, modern in the front from street view, blue white cedar all look awesome! if you paint it it may look dull awesome work either way!
I know what you mean about all the ‘natural’ wood on the decking Jordan. But I’d try & live with it, and let it weather a bit. The cedar & pine will look a bit different, over time. Give it another year or so, and then see what you think. 👊🏼
19:15 The trick I learned pulling ethernet cabling is to attach the string to a glo rod, or similar light, long, straight piece of wood that is longer than the gap between the strapping (or 48" for the drop ceiling tile grid I was using). Then you sort of toss it like a javelin to cross the spans until you need to go through a hole (or firewall in my case).
Honestly Jordan, that cedar looks amazing. Maybe it looks like it's too much for you, but it looks great with the natural wood look. Too much white can also he an eye sore, and that natural look contrasts the trex boards and the pvc facia and trim pieces.
The LED Studpack Garondo is looking sharp. I actually was one of the comments that thought white ceiling would make the cedar pop more but it looks good. Just remember Jordan it’s gonna need maintenance in the future so if you still don’t like it by then you can just spray it. Don’t waste your time now. Rad cracks me up and didn’t anyone catch what Paul said about the railing? Lol IYKYK. I love how you guys show how you fixed the sub fascia. It helps nobody to act like everything works out perfectly. Showing real time problems and solutions is a testament to this channel. Great job guys!

Jordan. The work is great. It's easy to ruminate over all the details and "errors" (happy accidents) when you are in the mix. In a year or two you will move on. Maybe its time to take a vacation
the stained ceiling might be easier to maintain in the long run .....we finished a 3 seasons porch w/ T&G - the walls are stained and varnished & the ceiling we primed and painted white ......but after about 10 years or a little more the knots started showing through the paint so we had to re prime and paint it - - Since you have an exterior area in the first place , I would encourage you to stay w/ the stain......it's an accent 😀
Looks fantastic! I don't even like the look of cedar but I know having a white ceiling will reflect the lights and kill the ambiance when sitting outside at night.
You could paint the smaller area under the facia that meets the front of the cedar. The white would help the cedar pop while leaving the warmth of the porch roof. 🤩Y'all are fantastic!
awesome video per usual! My only concern/question would be with running the T&G so tight. Are you worried about it buckling at the groove when it expands?
When making an access panel just cut out the top groove, the tongue still engages the bottom one. It is held in place by gravity, like yours is, of course, you still need attach the two boards together. Super easy.
Well Done!! $1200.00 for that T&G pine is obscene. I used to go to the local mill in Bastrop and get 16 foot cedar T&G for 1.26 a piece. That access panel needs to be rebuilt longer, to remove the kerf gap. The stained wood looks great, I am sure the mud daubers will agree. All in all, it is First Rate!
I'm a builder in the northeast ,I used v groove pine on my porch ceiling the wood bees ruined it I ended up covering it vinyl, good luck with yours lasting, nice job
Ok when I first saw the ceiling from the 2nd floor, I thought it looked great, but now that I see it from the ground, I think I agree with Jordan, it should be white.
Top notch work, guys. This is really my favorite channel as of late. Something calming about watching organized, thoughtful work being performed and accomplished. Keep it up!
Your gonna want to put some sort of securing mechanism on the interior access panel. It might not seem like it but something is gonna crawl up in there and make a home.
Looks great. I would not paint the ceiling white. That wood ceiling and the columns add some nice warmth to the porch ceilings and the exterior in general. Nice!
You guys do excellent work. Some ppl will criticize everyone else but usually they are the ones to cut every corner possible. Keep up the great work. I do home improvement and love watching and learning from yall.
Great video yet again. I totally understand why you're debating the cedar ceiling but I think it looks better from the deck pov that you'll be enjoying it from the most. Still looks great from the yard and it'll probably diffuse the light better at night giving it that warm glow and relaxing tone.
paint the deck roof dark to match window trim and light fixtures! will give it good cohesive contrast with what you already are using and will make the cedar stand out more!
I was with Jordan's "interesting...." thought. But that final shot won me over. Looks SHARP!!! I envy you all so much. To know that you built it with your own hands. Also, nice seeing Jordan's face on today's Perkins Bro's video. Two of my favorite channels!!
I think your choice of natural cedar stain does make that pop. It doe not look bad at all. Since you have white, blue and black on the building, I probably would have gone with a transparent light to medium grey to pull the colors together, but it would not have popped like it does now. I think it works nicely.
Video Idea. You guys are always showing Cool tips and tools. But what kind of tool maintenance do you guys do? When do you clean a blade vs. replace etc. Sharpen Drill bits.
When you're on the porch looking at the T&G ceiling looks good but from down in the yard, I agree with Jordan, the cedar-wrapped posts would look better and stand out more if the ceiling were painted.
Man, you guys are putting in so much work. It looks great! I love all the thought you put in to all the details, it makes a huge difference. Keep it up!
I vote for painting the ceiling. I wasn't familiar with the "Southern Blue" people talked about but after looking it up I think it would look great. And if it helps repel bugs, so much the better. And, I'll mention it again - sorry - on the exterior ceiling, the side of the board that was closest to the bark on the tree goes up, and the side of the board that was closest to the center of the tree becomes the exposed side. If it cups, the edges of the board will pull tighter to the backer (joist, whatever). Do it the other way and the edges of the board will try and cup away from what it's nailed to...
Power cord idea time 4 boxes, rubber coated wood back with cord storage, indicator on first box with 20 amp outlet, second box with USB a outlet and usb c outlet, third box with 2 duplex hospital grade outlets, forth box with a switch and a normal duplex outlet
Definitely prefer the stained ceiling over a white paint. It adds a lot of warmth that would be missing otherwise. Exciting to see everything continuing to come together!
0:18 is exactly the reason the Ontario building code does not allow for horizontal balusters. Gives kids a perfect way to climb over the railing and fall off. Not only that but any landing higher than 5'9" has to have railings that are 42" tall !
These guys always do great work. I like the stained ceiling, but i do understand what Jordan is saying. White might look even more classic and finished. I kind of want to see the classic light blue sky color as well.
Looks great! I love hearing/seeing Jordan's reactions when someone comes close to damaging or marking his new house! Welcome to home ownership Jordan. "It's getting on the house!" as spray from the hose splashes the side of HIS house. LOL. One suggestion is to secure the access panel in the ceiling (the one with just plywood holding it) by using high strength magenets so it doesn't get blown out by high winds. Might be a bit difficult with the boards already up, but with some thought I bet you could do it. Bad weather including very high winds are a fact of life these days.
I highly recommend when we are all waiting for a new video to go back a year or 4 ... there will absolutely be a video you haven't seen. I thought I had seen them all. Somehow I missed when they were clearing the lot for the garage... pineapple juice barrels on fire, chainsaw, propane tank and a stuck truck.
The cedar isn't a bad choice, but I do agree if you really want those columns and beams to stand out, then painting them would be a better choice. There are a few options if you go that route. You can paint the bottom deck white and the bottom of the deck roof that blue to flip-flop the colors and provide contrast between the vertical and horizontal, you can match the repective walls so bottom is blue and top is white to make it look continuous, or both of them can be white to match the fascia trim. I guess that last option is you stick with the stained cedar so you can save money. Like I said its not a bad look, but the columns and beams do get lost within.
I just had a thought, have you considered painting the porch ceiling the blue that is on the exterior of the house just to have some contrast? The ceiling/soffit of the eaves can still stay stained but the rest of the ceiling could be the blue.
I really like the porch with the stain. I could see the argument for painting it because it's a bit of a modern meets rustic clash but the stained cedar just looks really cozy for hanging out.
Jordan, if you want more "POP", On the 1st floor deck, the top trim board under the 2nd floor decking (not the fascia), try either the darker blue or the black trim paint and then the entire fascia on the 2nd floor for the same color.. That cedar will POP and the white on the 1st floor fascia will keep it from being too much. Try it using one of your apps.. I use a few and take images of homes and change colors to be able to show what could be. Cheers guys! Oh and cute grandkids! (Ignore the horizontal rails haters, they look amazing and far classier than vertical rails. )
Jist helped my son do a T&G ceiling on a covered porch. Wish I had the stickers idea. Would have saved time. The lumber i found at the local big box was rough so we did a filling and sanding step before paint.
Mock it up in Photoshop (or Canva) Jordan. Change the ceiling color to white in the photo and see what you think. I like the cedar/stained pine look, but I see your point about white possibly being a better choice.

I think that's a great middle-ground! Convert the pine into a 'boxed in' texture, rather than the 'all-encompassing' look that it currently has.

Black colums black ceiling white fascia. To tie in with the windows.

Attach a string to it in case it does get blown deep into that ceiling. Storms down there are no joke.

You guys do excellent work. Some ppl will criticize everyone else but usually they are the ones to cut every corner possible. Keep up the great work. I do home improvement and love watching and learning from yall.
Praying you and yours are safe.
Less paint means less maintenance......leave the ceiling stained. Looks great
I would think that stained ceiling would need to be restained every 2-4 years.
The wood t&g looks much better than white and showcases the uniqueness of the build. However, if it bothers you after a month, paint it white.
Power cord idea time
4 boxes, rubber coated wood back with cord storage, indicator on first box with 20 amp outlet, second box with USB a outlet and usb c outlet, third box with 2 duplex hospital grade outlets, forth box with a switch and a normal duplex outlet
Keep the cedar roof.. it looks amazing
What stain did you use for the pine? Looks great.
I think the porch ceiling looks great just stained. I think it looks better than paint would. So my 'vote' is leave it!
Going to have to agree with Jordan. White will look better and blends in with the rest of the garage
All of it looks great, including that ceiling! Good choice!
I think after having the ceiling fans installed (black I'm guessing) it will make look everything more proportional.
I like the cedar/stained pine look, but I see your point about white possibly being a better choice.
wow came out soooo nice👌. you guys are a beast when it comes to trimwork and detail work second to none.!!!!
It would be nice to see the lighting at night! Bet they look awesome!
I love your videos, they're so satisfying watching it all come together. Inspiring!
Kids are adorable!! ❤
