Dave Grohl says just go out and play. Screw social media. Screw recording. Just gig. Shoot for 300 shows in your first year. Stay with 100 miles of your location during that first year. Encourage your fans to record and bootleg your gigs! Word of mouth is still the best form of advertising. If you love playing live, then play out live... a LOT. Good things will happen.
SO glad that you talked about the recording quality for local bands. Sometimes I'll see a local band live and say, "wow, I need to get their demo". And then I go to listen and it sounds like it was recorded with a potato. You could do the other 2 tips perfectly, and if you skip that recording tip, it all comes crashing down. Great video broseph!!!
These are all great and legit points. We shelled out the money, put out some decent recordings, webpage and social media. We play rockabilly and some DJs from overseas that are affiliated with the rockabilly scene want to add us to their playlists. We are essentially a start up but putting these things in place helped a lot to get us going.
great advice man! my band saved up and got some good quality songs done and it definatly gave us a boost when we started trying to get tour name out. growing the scene is hard but its worth it for sure. love the videos, keep them coming.
Thanks for uploading another video Ryan! Even though my husband and I aren't into starting a band, we love watching all the info you put out on your channel. Can't wait for the new album, the new singles are fantastic!
Immediately clicked this once I saw the title. I had that poorly worded question about starting a band on the last Q & A. I didn't mean serious intentions like "big band make music for the people sell out" bs I really meant just like not half assing it and making sure things are done correctly. This video really covered that. Super helpful man.
Content is awesome man! Little recommendation would be to cut out the spaces in between topics. Editing out those couple seconds of blank space would be good! Also maybe throw a track in the background quietly. Other than that the content is to the point and really helpful! Thank you Ryan!
the are point that are the most important for me. have fun and create good music. if the band sees that their music is not good, than forget all dreams about being big. music most be good
Great video, with a nice little surprise to hear you're from Tyler! I grew up in Gladewater about 30 minutes out! I especially like the advice on recording. Quality>Quantity.
Help! I’m 14 and I’m a girl, i bought a drum set, and I also have a guitar but I don’t know which one should I pick to play in my future band or should I learn both and see which one I like the most?
Learning both would be awesome! Then you could write full songs eventually. If you HAD to choose one, guitar is great, since you can write on your computer and program drums. But you're so young, i would do my best to learn both.
try both guitar and drums, perhaps even more instruments (bass, keyboard). Try to determine which instruments you would like to be able to play well. Most instruments feel awkward in the beginning so don't focus too much on the first impression of the feel ;) any instrument becomes comfortable when you start practicing a lot. Also think about the music you like to listen to and the music (songs) you would like to play: what instruments are in the music, and which one of those instruments do I want to play? First choose the instrument you want to learn, and then focus on becoming better at it. There's enough guitarists and drummers out there, so don't worry
your right man but I have know money for a bass guitar and microphone in a drummer I have a guitarist and a vocalist and bass but no bass guitar you're right about the internet killing the Jam of music
I think my problem is going to be (other than finding members) finding practice space. I can easily practice in my room, but not with others. got any tips on that? I'm going to check out music schools too, because I want to take guitar, maybe bass lessons.
No way,i love getting a message from a band saying hey you may like our sound check it out! ❤ but also it's awesome musicians put themselve out there and hand out. I rather say presentation not sound, dude do what you love dont do it for fans..
Definitely agree with you on all of this I’ve seen so many bands do things like this and I’d love telling them what they’re doing wrong but I’m not trying to come off as rude lol
What if you live in a County were you can't any band members ,I have had the worst of luck finding anyone and I'm a seasoned musician and songwriter with great tunes
Hey Ryan, did you go to college? Did you have to struggle trough that "college or the band" decision? Could you make a video about that giving some advices?
I’m 19 and just started playing guitar.. If I get good by 23 do you think I should start a band? I live in NC and everyone thinks it’s weird to listen to rock still
I have no intention on starting a band, mainly beacuse iam not that good of a screamer yet and where i live almost no one knows metal in general. But for some reason i feel like i could take an advice from you for any stuff :D
In the past before tv and even radio were widespread people used to bring there instruments over to play after dinner to entertain one another. If you were good enough you could move the stage into the barn where there was enough space for people to dance. Now it's all about who can out pose the other and groups of kids "liking" a band because they heard them first. Thank god Napster killed the record label.
im an intermediate guitarist looking for a singer/instrument player (piano, bass, guitar whatever really) to form a song writing partnership. im not interested in anything formulaic and want to do something creatively off the wall. reply if you live in northern ireland and are interested. cheers!
Agree with everything except the school part, most kids take that info and use it against you, or they keep listening to garbage trap music. Besides that great video and points
thanks for the help Ryan. I've now been able to lift my private abortion clinic off the ground thanks to your help. come by if you get Crystal pregnant! :)

Bootleg recordings and playing a lot of gigs is how the Grateful Dead got big soo....
Metallica for one did that, played live gigs like crazy starting off.
i’d trust dave grohl with my life
@x _ x you could've googled that but instead you embarrassed yourself

Thanks for making this video, it really helped a lot!

I would like to see a tutorial of how to scream or growl. God bless bro!
Dude your advice is amazing thank you. And looking forward to the new album!

There's no scene in my town bc there's no venues 😂😂

You're a legend Ryan cheers for giving back to the community
You rock dude, amazing advice!
very helpful. thanks.
I’d just have everyone in my band buy their materials, and we’d sing in my garage.
Great tips! Very honest and direct
But how do i start a band im 13 im Scottish and i am a drummer but i cant find a band or anyone who is into my style of music who can play instruments
Put stuff on RUclips! Even if its just you covering songs or whatever. Its how people like Luke Holland got their start.
I can't believe a drummer in this world has trouble finding a band. Come to Canada and you'll be in five bands within a day.
@@TheSickNeeds too true, all the drummers I know play in atleast 2-3 bands..
drummers are so hard to findddd
Darn.
Jesus called he wants his hair back
Your appearance reminds me of travis tritt! Looking forward to seeing yall in richmond next week!
Thank you for the advice.
I love and enjoy local music so much! :)
the studio recording advice is soooo true. I cant stand bad production on an album, hence the new MMF album and the last 2 CTE albums
