It's kind of a misdirection to say Guitar Center wiped out the mom and pop shops. If they were jerks then GC may have been the reason. Around here the unrealistic minimum purchase requirements from Gibson and Fender is what did them in. Did you two ever do a video on that?
Mr.Walley, You, Good Sir are correct. I grew up in a small town. I began learning guitar before I was old enough to drive. Within biking distance, a new mom and pop music store opened. They didn't carry Fenders or Gibsons. In fact they had a sign in the store that read, don't even ask for a Fender or Gibson. I asked the owner why? As I'm looking at guitars I never herd of, and they were not very good. He told me because Fender and Gibsons were way overrated. Even though I was young, I still knew that at that time they were probably the best you could buy(Fender or Gibson). This was some 45 years ago. I think the owner was to proud to tell me he couldn't afford to buy 10 or 20 at a time. Belive it or not, there still open. Guess what, now they sale the overrated Gibsons and Fenders, because now there established and have the credit for them. I actually bought, back in the latter 80s a MIII Deluxe super strat type of a Gibson. I used to go there because they were close to my home to buy strings. And that day I walk in, they had Fenders and Gibsons. I wish I never sold that MIII Deluxe. I bought it for around 400.00. Just ask folks even if they aren’t musicians. That’s how I found jams in Horse Cave and Vine Grove Kentucky. There are Facebook pages that cover this base. Old Time Open Jams advertises a lot of open jams all over the country and their members will guide you to a jam if you’re coming through an area. Check out societies. Central Mississippi Blues Society has an open jam night on Mondays at a local restaurant in Jackson. They ask everyone who walks through the door if you want to play whether you come with an instrument or not. Their backing band kills and they are supportive of almost all skill levels though you should come with a song prepared. The biggest reason I started playing bass was because there were a ton of guitarists or singer/ guitarists in the market. Be a good hang, know the instrument, and be reliable and relatively punctual.
As a guitarist for nearly all of my life, I've recently decided to adopt bass. It's a needed part of bands, and as a dedicated lead guitarist, I play bass with this same mindset. I'm learning scales amd theory, but it's similar enough to guitar that it was a nearly instant conversion. Playing with fingers, has actually started to shape more ability on guitar that was locked away previously, so yes, be more than one instrumentalist.
When I was 15, the only people around to play with were 35-year-olds. Probably should have noticed the life hack lurking in that little fact. But this was the 80s. Hacking was for Matthew Broderick and computers named Joshua. And we didn't have lives, to hack or otherwise. And we walked uphill both ways in the snow...
When I first started out the local store had a monthly get together. Their students and whoever would play the standards with extended breaks so everyone could swap leads. In it's own way it was like those blues jams you would see on TV for Clapton's Rehab Center, without the big names. Or the Custom Shop guitars. I met some friends that way and we were able to put together a decent band. Much more talent and less in your face than Broke Dick Dawg ever imagined. Still, no more success, but I got to play guitar.
There’s a website out there called Bandmix. It’s like a social media site designed around the idea of the musician bulletin board. They do a pay to message model kind of like LinkedIn. But a profile is free to setup and browse around. I’ve used it a bit and found a drummer local to me interested in the same type of music. But also there aren’t a ton of people on there that pay to message at least in my area. So it’s kind of a small pond, but could be a good way to browse musicians in your area.
You could always do what I did. I needed a band, so I had kids. I created one to be a bass player and the other a singer. Another a keyboardist. There is a downside, though. I got old waiting on them to be old enough to play in bars.
It is very difficult to find someone to play with as an amateur. I've met some people who could really play, but between spouses, careers, children and other interests you might get together once a month. Add in finding someone with similar tastes and skill levels, and it has just never happened for me.
Used to be more Shops that set up areas for Jamming, hanging out because owners knew they would need strings, supplies and new guitars so a Win Win, Guitar Swap Meets are now a Thing, usually once a month, Concerts, Venues with Open Mikes, Craigslist posting asking to jam, or seeking band members or even a Band if solo performer, and lastly playing, jamming as Busking
This one time, I met a girl who was a singer looking for some musicians. I went over to her house and we had a lot of fun but we never played a note. Lol Facebook.
Why don’t more stores get a liquor license or a pop machine, a few couches, a coffee table covered in guitar magazines? Make it inviting to spend some time there. Maybe forget the liquor license. Drunk guitarists and walls full of Gibsons may not be a good mix.

Here's A Funny Story For Everyone! I Used To Carry Mail. One Day My Supervisor Sent Me To Another Station To Help Out. There I Met A Bass Player Who Every Year Held A Birthday Jam At His Home. He Had Built A Low Riding Enclosed Stage In His Back Yard & Would Even Set Up A Pavilion For His Guest To Sit & Listen Throughout The Event. I Asked If There Was A Setlist & He Said "No, Just A Open Good Natured Jam Session." He Also Invited Some Old Musician Friends Whom Included Another Bass Player Who Brought His Girlfriend. Since Our Host Was Back & Forth Tending To Party Matters, This Guy Decided HE Should Take Up The Session Leader Mantle. Every Song I Suggested Was Crassly Declined! There Was No Goodwill Amongst Musical Brethren To Be Found. I Studied Theory So There Would Have Been No Problem Brainstorming Among The Others So Far As Chord Progressions Were Concerned. I Took A Seat & Got Some Food While He & The Others (Whom I Learned Later Had ALL Been In A Group TOGETHER) Held A PERFORMANCE, Segueing From One Tune To Another Mid-Song As If They Were Auditioning For Earth, Wind & Fire!!!! Jam Buddies Are The Proverbial "Haystack Needle" These Days...... 🙃
I was at the grocery store, I believe the cereal aisle, when I was recruited. I tried to get out of it by saying I had no skill. But alas, skills are not required. For the drummer we just amuse ourselves by inviting people and reading their excuses. We don’t need bass because we are already fairly stout. (wish there were two snakes agreeing not to tread upon one another instead of one insisting he get his own way above all else).

please show us the black and white strat over Baxter's left shoulder. I need to see the design on it.
Your local community college is a great place to start
Ironically, I'm watching this from Chicago and am actually from Rockingham. What are the freaking odds? I'll have to stop by when I come to visit!
Always Entertaining Gentlemen!!
it'd be cool to see ya'll jam. ya'll should just record a jam session, it doesn't have to be perfect! would be neat.
Baxter wearing a young Britney Spears shirt and seated next to Jonathan. I don't know who, but someone is going on a federal list.
Good discussion fellas!
Jam nights are the best. You meet people and audition at the same time! Lol
Yep....that's a cool guit!
Try Bandmix for finding local musicians. That and Facebook groups.
"oh sorry, im not actually looking for a bandmate, I just have a wide shitting stance." 😂
What if you 59 and just learning , should I still walk the halls of the local Jr. College ?
HAHA!! I mean, that sure does sound kinda creepy, David. I say do it. :D
You could always do what I did. I needed a band, so I had kids. I created one to be a bass player and the other a singer. Another a keyboardist.
There is a downside, though. I got old waiting on them to be old enough to play in bars.
'but whatever,
(whispered to himself) ugh so angry,
anyway back to work'
lmao
You have a Harris Teeter's in So Pines?
Dang , want that black and white strat behind you guys ! ☠️☠️☠️🖖
It is very difficult to find someone to play with as an amateur. I've met some people who could really play, but between spouses, careers, children and other interests you might get together once a month. Add in finding someone with similar tastes and skill levels, and it has just never happened for me.
luv that shirt bax,🥰
A guitar shop has never worked to meet musicians for me nor anybodyI've ever met and I even worked at a Guitar Center..
wait, what if 3 of us played, guitars, bass and drums and we were the band? as I look for a band I come across this
It’s a stylistic disconnect for me. I’ve no problem playing P&W but seems like that’s all that’s in the area.
drummer looking for a band or to start one
Used to be more Shops that set up areas for Jamming, hanging out because owners knew they would need strings, supplies and new guitars so a Win Win, Guitar Swap Meets are now a Thing, usually once a month, Concerts, Venues with Open Mikes, Craigslist posting asking to jam, or seeking band members or even a Band if solo performer, and lastly playing, jamming as Busking
Banjo in the backwoods high in the mountains in the brambles where the hound dog won't go !
I met musicians on capos only
This one time, I met a girl who was a singer looking for some musicians. I went over to her house and we had a lot of fun but we never played a note. Lol Facebook.
00:17 Baxter and Brittany have the same smile!
Why don’t more stores get a liquor license or a pop machine, a few couches, a coffee table covered in guitar magazines? Make it inviting to spend some time there. Maybe forget the liquor license. Drunk guitarists and walls full of Gibsons may not be a good mix.
The thought of Baxter’s dad walking by his room and thinking to himself “oh great, he’s playing with his dolls again, bet he grows up and wears a shirt with a pop star on it” just made me spit coffee on my phone.
Thank you! I have songs. I'm ready. I need musicians.
Do you need bandmates?
Took your advice and I jumped right to gigfinder in my area of Western NY State. There were 3 listings and not one was for a musician. However…. I did get a good lead on a hooker searching for an understanding roomie!🤣🤣. Ok..just kidding about the last part.
PS edit….and in addition…
You guys said the new Player Strats ( MIM ) are pretty good. I went out and got one. I agree! I’m surprisedZ
Aw man that look Jonathan gave in the thumbnail lmao
I'm 56 years old, I am a long time beginner guitar player. RUclips doesn't help me much. I can't find anyone to mentor or jam with.
i've met a couple people my age at jams. people have instagrams.
“If you’re a younger guy or gal . . . or person . . .” 😂😂😂
I'm the wish version of SRV! lol...
Agreed!
play all types of genres
Look for open mic/jam sessions at local bars during the week. There are 5 or 6 local to me that are full of people that you get to hear play and sing and they get to hear you. It’s like an audition without the pressure.
On the unemployment line?
Who wants to be the first to give the big man shit for having the teabagger symbol on his coffee mug?
Who wants to jam? I’m in miami Florida!!!!
I am in my Mid-40's... started playing about 4 years ago... was going to do my first Open Mic (in April of 2020) and was working on making some musical friends there. They still haven't brought the Open Mic nights back. Might go ahead and try some of the other tips. Also, I do work about a block from Berklee - so I could probably just pay some students to jam with me... maybe
I live in the Metrowest area in MA. if you are nearby, let me know. I’m a guitarist looking for folks to jam with.
Same thing.. There was a great venue/coffeeshop that had a monthly open mic (appeared on public access, too) but since COVID, they are closed for 4 months, open for 2 months, and now they're open for a complete 12 hours a week, but no more open mics :(
buy a looper
Anyone in Mound, Mn?!
I'm 54 and my band is totally imaginary.....although the drummer is being problematic and will need to be replaced
Yes, dvsreed.
Mine also, and my bass player sucks. Lol.
Someone puts a foot into my stall they’re going to get stomped upon.
Any East Tennessee Drummers looking for a classic Rock Cover band
Absolutely LOVE the Gadsden flag tumbler, absolutely HATE not seeing my Silver Sky in the background. We middle aged folks in rural nowhere have a very tough time finding folks that want to play together, let alone out.
Find comfort in knowing we are the salt of the earth.
Avoid Craigslist like the plague!
637 Yeah just look at the Rolling Stones
Dear lord, a foot under the stall 🤦
The Larry Craig Band 🤣🤣🤣
People still go to church in the States? That explains it.
Yeah, faith in the Lord is so stupid. I’d much rather worship fauci, the NHS, government and social justice.
@@smelltheglove2038 Nobody is saying worship Fauci, but you would be an idiot if you think you know more about infectious diseases than him. People who publicly doubt him should show their PhD degrees.
Church
Jonathan, I want to hear you play some Tom Petty.
Blues competition
Jonathan should invite a New Jacksonville,Fl group, The Annie Dukes who recently opened for Nita Ford, their Guitarist Singer Emma Moseley has a voice built for Blues
How about Mama Blue? Or my fav Cowford band - Gov Club. Corbitt Brothers? Isaaic Corbitt is the best mouth harp player I’ve ever heard.
@@rstuartcpa Listen to Juniper Pines by Emma Moseley, She does an acoustic version of Song she wrote
