I thank you so much. This is common sense but it's so easy to get tunnel vision when you're trying to balance being an artist, producer, full time employee, band mate, etc. thank you so much
If you have the talent to write good songs. Try building it alone and then get into forming the band and preparing the live concept ( with imagination you can get ahead while you are writing and recording your ideas). That can free you from some of the claustrophobia you talk about. Dedicate time to building the project, while you do that you can plan ahead for when the multi tasking comes along. If you are doing all that stuff at the same time you are composing, your energy wont be well committed to writing, an that is the most important step. You have to have GREAT/GOOD SONGS.
This is clearly the best video on this topic I've ever found! Thank you so much! One thing, to extend your point. RUclips now is a good option to replace live shows (to some extant). I live in a country with no conditions for make it as a metal artist, and conquering local stage first was one of the worst tips I'd been given (6 years wasted). And now, after 3 years of making videos and having 27k followers, my audience is the whole World! Thanks to Internet and RUclips in particular, I finally make for a living being a musician. So, my suggestion to young musicians is to open your mindset to the opportunities that the modern world gives you.
Justin. I am a 61-year-old. I've been sitting on the fence for 10 years now. Thank the Lord I played your video. You are seriously amazing. To the point. So much wisdom! Thank you so much.
absolutely spot on! Don't come from a position of 'fear.' You must remember that 'you are YOU' and they ... are they! There's enough room for everyone and everyone brings something to the table. I agree that envy, jealousy are negative emotions that don't serve you well. Unfortunately, we all know that there are people who have little to no talent in the music business who are 'up there in lights'. You've got to simply be yourself, forget about them and concentrate on who you are and where you're going and what steps or strategies will help you get there. At the end of the day, the most important factor is to enjoy your musical journey.
I'd like to add to the 3rd Audience builder: Interact and engage online. I see so many bands that have 5000 followers, 200 comments, etc on Twitter, IG, Facebook, YT and they are following 0. Responding to 0 comments. Build a community around your band! Great video. I've been working on a lot of these for a current client of mine. I like how you organized the actions.
Fantastic video! I've been gearing up for a round of press releases, etc, and I was dreading it (because it's so much time spent not actually playing music). After watching the video, though, I'm totally enthused about connecting with real people. Just what I needed. Thanks, Justin! :)
Really good stuff, Justin. Thanks for posting! And yes absolutely write great songs with great lyrics and take time in the studio to make the recordings as solid as possible. But you're so right you have to do the work of getting your music out to people!
I believe it's who you know and how much you want it. If I wanted to take singing more serious than app karaoke at a higher level like my fav. App smule sing!... (i love my inner diva).... I'd invest lol but Im too shy to sing infront of actual people. It fails me right there unless I can sit into a cubical (look! Its the cube lady) .. Ill push puns aside here... to actually get anywhere, u need to be prepared to get there and be willing to perform infront of an audience. If I wanted to take it seriously. But I myself sing for less stress not for money. I probably drive my neighbor nuts lol
Thanks for the advice. I made music, learned how to mix and master then, realized that no one can hear it just putting it on RUclips. I have to make the traffic. Playing live seems like a necessity.
BUILD THE NETWORK BEFORE you need it...like Jordan Harbinger says "dig the well before you're thirsty" LOVE YOUR VOCAB on the levels of the network.."hired guns" especially!
I love you, and thank you! I have been seeking guidance, and got alot of it from you! First time in my life I take notes because I chose to, and not forced to. God Bless, and take care!
The best advice! In my country a lot of people does nothing else than liking dead artists and paying tribute to them! The bitter side of the story is that if you don’t do that, you don’t belong to that group and you don’t get followers (that’s my experience). Oh well
That's bad advice. It's the deceased artists of the past you are still competing with as well as live ones. And then you have the old ones rehashing or reinventing. Think about it. That's why this industry is so hard if not impossible to crack. Then there's the corruption ...
I've been giving out this same advice since 2012 but I'm not a Pro in the industry, I just observe it close. It's good to hear a professional experienced person confirm that the single is the way to go. My logic for this way of thinking is that in the past, with vinyl, they could control all sales and we had to buy it to hear it. Today we just want to download what we like and honestly, 98% of and album sucks. Sooner than later no one will be buying albums, only singles. B-side music still cost a lot to make, so why make it? Sumbi
I have searched all over for a video like this! the knowledge your sharing is very great & I would pay you for this type of knowledge. Thank you, so much be blessed
This guy's narration fascinates me... every sentence starts off with medium volume, and then he amps it up in the middle... and the last word of every sentence trails off into a tiny whisper. I'm not sure if he's doing this on purpose or if he just talks like that for some reason. But it's unusual to say the least.
Great and truthful advice. Another key ingredient is confidence. Not arrogance, but simply believing you are good enough. It's a rarity that the next hit style is predictable. It's usually just a copy or facsimile of what has broken through to the masses. Always throw your hat into the ring if you are to ever know and of course the endless hours of work, performance, and attention is most vital indeed. Thanks Justin!
Hi Justin, thanks for the great video! Loved all the great tips and the emphasis on building a good network. Can't wait for the next set of videos! :) Jen
VERY informative stuff, man! I have played in bands and gained succesful followings with each. Im now flying solo, and was glad to know that releasing tracks one by one (I have 4 on my RUclips page as of 2/17), followed by an EP, is the way to go. Thanks man....dig your take! I needed these reminders.
Hi SonicScoop. I'm a singer-songwriter and really want to pitch that first song but I really don't know where to begin... I can't record professional stuff myself, I don't play my instruments well enough for a professional recording. But I do believe in my song... But where do I start?
Find someone who has digital audio workstation like i have you can record with and like draw chords on instruments and so on u need someone who knows how to do that
The best thing I've found to do to sound pro is hire someone off the site www.soundbetter.com. A hired person of your choice can do your music professionally for a fee. It could be less than 100 but usually more. I've never had to pay more than 200. I've sent rough tracks of a song that isn't played that great but I pay the person to play it right. A basic recording and a chord chart is all they need. I've hired guys for just 1 instrument or vocals or to do the entire song. I've even had composers back my song with an orchestra. Even though it was done digitally by one guy its still great. I've found people on there who have worked in t.v. and movies and written with famous people. I wrote a song with a guy who plays with Blake Shelton. He's a really great musician. If you'd like to hear some of my songs that were written by me and played on by people on the site then just message me. I'll send links of my songs. Sometimes when you write songs you need to let the pros take over. Think about it, an architect can draw plans for the most beautiful looking building yet didn't even lay a brick or hammer a nail to make it look as great as the finished product. That's basically what you are as a writer. A few times I hired more than one person to complete my songs. Check out the site to learn more.
I heard that in the past it was easy: you can hijack a radio station and barricade yourself in the booth and force the dj at gunpoint to play your song over and over again till the cops get there. disclaimer: this is not a good idea anyymore
Found this video on a search for advice on how I should share my music with others and ended up calling my vocalist at midnight telling him we shouldn't release a full ep. We should release singles first. I like your advice! I appreciate people like you who take the time to give it.

Well as someone who loves music and have now recorded and in now going through the very exciting process of making the music video I found this most informative. Put it this way, I know more now than I did 14mins ago. For me the best part has been being able to include people I care about to come along on this journey with me. Now I am realising that to get you guys to like and invest in my music I first need to listen to and invest in others. Shan't rumble on anymore but thanks a bunch for the info:)
Very informative thank you for this video. I’m a Reggae/dancehall Artist living in the states and as much as I’m sure my work is exceptional I still don’t have the right strategies so I will take your advice and try to capitalize on it👍🏾 ur appreciated
Thank you for this advice!! This was so helpful, I’ve actually been doing these things kind of subconsciously so it’s nice to know I’m headed in the right direction. Thanks again Justin!!
great advice. It used to be there was one gate keeper for a band to get success: the big or small label A and R people. That was back when i was new to the music industry. Now the 'a and r' people, are like you said: bloggers, playlist makers, taste makers etc etc.
I thank you so much. This is common sense but it's so easy to get tunnel vision when you're trying to balance being an artist, producer, full time employee, band mate, etc. thank you so much

words of wisdom.
absolutely spot on! Don't come from a position of 'fear.' You must remember that 'you are YOU' and they ... are they!

GREAT WORDS OF WISDOM MUCH NEEDED THANKS FOR BREAKING THIS DOWN IN SUCH A WAY PPL CAN UNDERSTAND
Fantastic video! I've been gearing up for a round of press releases, etc, and I was dreading it (because it's so much time spent not actually playing music). After watching the video, though, I'm totally enthused about connecting with real people. Just what I needed. Thanks, Justin! :)
This is EXACTLY what my heart has been telling me. Watching and listening to you has assured me to listen to my heart more often. Thankyou!
This is what I really needed to hear.. Thank you so much.
This video has made more sense about music marketing than the last 50 music and marketing related videos I have watched.
A very good advice for artists. As a manager, its great too.
Really good stuff, Justin. Thanks for posting! And yes absolutely write great songs with great lyrics and take time in the studio to make the recordings as solid as possible. But you're so right you have to do the work of getting your music out to people!
1-write amazing songs
2-write amazing songs
3-write amazing songs
4-all the rest

Not really. There are plenty of bands with amazing songs who never even got close.

Let's Make a Song Man
Wish I heard this info 10 years ago. Been doing it all wrong for my daughter. She has sung from San Diego to Burbank to Orlando to NYC and back and still performs and DJ's as well and is a dance choreographer, but getting across that amateur to professional line of the music industry, that's as wide as the Grand Canyon. She's been singing since the age of 4 and performed in a radio station competition at the age of 10 and was the only kid there competing against adult groups and solo artists and she got the only standing ovation that day. So, yeah, I'm frustrated trying to figure this out. Even went to American Idol and the Voice. So thanks for the info. Great info.
Lets be real, a lot of music is DEAD....ROCK is DEAD, INDIE is a low following hippie scene that no fan has money to suport and its the kind of style that would never break out...
ONE THING is if you ask me you got to be reall to where your music can take you!!! That is the most important thing, enjoy your music and give zero fucks to anyone around you...Yeah we all want to live off of that but sooner or later 99,99999% of you reading this comment will slowlly get a job and every year you will drift away from your passion inch by inch.
I know this is depressive but reality is reality, this music industry is a mess and its getting worse year by year plus the culture is changing so fast that no one knows where to turn
Im young and I feel that in a couple months from now I’m going to be big.
Rock is dead? Ha ha LOL.
Maybe that’s your reality, but not ours. I’m sorry. Life is so magnificent just to be spent on meaningless jobs.
Justin you have a fantastic speaking voice! It's made for audiobooks!
This is probably the most genuine tips I saw on RUclips so far. Thank you so much Sonic Scoop!
Skinny is Green I'm dropping a song tomorrow, can you do me a favor and please check it out?thanks my mans
Great video. And what Justin is saying hear is how the universe works give to receive . Not as easy as it sounds.
Good advice for my new music video

Great powerful inspiring advice. Thanks a million!
Very refreshing compared to a lot of other resources on marketing! Very sincere and wholesome advice.
Great informative, practical video... has inspired me to take some concrete action before my noon gig!
Thank you so much 😀😀😀this is the best video I saw out of all the advice on how too get my music out there
Thank you for this. Really appreciate it - as you said it's about 'growing the pie' Love that way of thinking!!
Finally someone with actual advice in stead of "label label label, get as many collabs as possible, label label label"
Thanks for doing these videos Justin. I find them really inspiring.
I love your method of explanation!!! I can truly understand what is being said. You've been very helpful.
Hi, thank you so much! I now have a vision of how I should release my songs, how to record them, and how to share them... Your advices gave me lot of courage and optimism, cheers

great advice. It used to be there was one gate keeper for a band to get success: the big or small label A and R people. That was back when i was new to the music industry. Now the 'a and r' people, are like you said: bloggers, playlist makers, taste makers etc etc.
