this is not a crisis. social media is harmless and has significantly reduced violence among young people as compared to in person interactions.

In my family we have experienced problems with our children not sleeping because they cannot stop using Facebook or what’s up or whatever it is a third using whatever after using and they wake up lifeless I need to sleep, but they still go to school, but it does impact them Also, they are in a bad mood they don’t wanna eat they just want to sleep all day it’s not good we do have a big problem with our children in America.

As someone that has looked into finding a flip-phone with my family, part of the problem is a lot of flip-phones are starting to become more and more similar to smartphones (and even some of the most basic flip-phones have free Internet access where people can still access social media). Part of it's also due to phone companies trying to phase out 3G and 4G phones, as cell towers now are usually more built for 5G.

I'm a social media researcher, a digital ethnomusicologist, who has some of the only data available to the public on comments below Black girls' musical videos here on RUclips. Google even helped me remove one of the 650 videos I collected back in 2014-15 that date back to 2006. We need better access to real data to show and prove harm and prevent it.

These parents are in denial and will continue to place these harmful smartphones in the hands of kids. They could easily not get them a phone at all, or just get them a basic flip phone for communication. Somehow, they think it’s a great idea to give a 10 year old an iPhone with no true parental lock on it, and then act surprised when they’re child has been watching all kind of insanity on social media 😒😒
