You’d never pass code inspection the way you installed the ledgers into the support posts is a recipe for disaster you need to notch the posts to properly support the deck and run torx 6in wood fastners thru them your lag bolts will shear off with continous weight and use

You did a nice job there Jim. That will give you years of trouble free service.

Six out of ten. The effort exceeds the finished result. Some bad connections but mostly lack of consistency in the plan. Some parts are over built and some are under built. A better plan would use less lumber in strategic places and be even stronger, look better and saved $.

Thanks Cam, In the Southern US, yellow pine refers to a special group of trees known as the Southern Yellow Pines, these are mostly longleaf pine, shortleaf pine, slash pine, and loblolly pine.

That is not an easy project for the average do-it-yourself homeowner to try and tackle. Lots of planning involved. You did a good job and the results show it. Good job on the editing of the video too. Good editing takes a lot of time but it makes for an enjoyable video. Well done, Jim.

I was under impression that the supports for any deck or landing should not be supported by bolts but should be supportive on its own before bolting?

I think you are right. I had not heard that about a landing but it makes sense because a group of people could gather on the landing and put a ton of weight on it.

Jim Thomas I also looked up sheer strength of carriage bolts and see no reason why they wouldnt hold as well, nice work by the way.
