Yes, Julius Cheeks and Archie Brownlee were the "hardest" singers I've ever heard. I think Julius sung a little harder. As you said, he influenced Joe Ligon. He also influenced Robert Blair, Clarence Fountain, Wilson Pickett, James Brown and Little Richard. Not bad for a man who didn't go beyond the 2nd grade and never learned to read and write. He is greatly missed.
+Gospel Nostalgia Wow? My father & I were just talking about them & he said he loved both but Archie could begin a song in 5th tenor and June couldn't do that. I said I wish I could have seen that. Two giants of American music going at it.
Yes, Archie was something else, but Julius was just so "raw and hard". Some (like the Soul Stirrers and others) even considered his style "wild". He did one song with them and they did not see him as a good fit. I loved his style.
We used to hear this song every Sunday morning ,mama lovedthe part "...justa cryin " /"I didn't even know the family / it was a sad occaision for me (boys).
You finally posted it! Thanks from the bottom of my heart. This is my favorite song by my favorite singer. This is song is incredible. You made my year with this one. God bless you my friend!
Hello my friend! I have a question. Do you happen to have a copy of the album Wilson Pickett did with the Violinaires? I think it's on the Brunswick label(?). No one has it. The only person who might is you. Thanks for your time and help.

One the greatest lead singers to ever grace the mic of the Quartet field one of Joe Ligon's inspirations.

Sorry Lorenzo. I don't think I have that. I have their old stuff on Gotham.
Really? Is that the stuff with Willie Banks?
