This Saturday (April 19), marks the official 20th anniversary of Nas' classic debut, Illmatic. For the past two decades, the Queensbridge rapper's LP has remained in the top 5 list of "best rap albums" of all time. The trends and fashion may have changed in hip-hop, but this album hasn't gone anywhere.
In its honor, VIBE and Jungle went back to the very projects that raised Nas for a first hand tour of the hood. Little did we know that our journey would take us to the very apartment that started it all for Jungle and his older brother. This is the very first tour of apartment 5D aka Nas' childhood home.
Stay tuned for more!

Jungle really reps his brother man. That's what's up. Nas did the same when none of us knew who he was talking about. One 👆love 💖
Funny u
True that❤❤❤
Word. I thought Jungle was one of his rap partners.
AZ and Nas in the stairway together. man that mustve been cool
Talk about Memory Lane.
The way Jungle explains .ALL THE MEMORIES HE MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE ACTUALLY THERE!!!!
well that plus everything we've heard from nas. never grew up in the projects or been to the projects but he paints the picture so clear in your mind, you right there on the block with em, right there looking out that project window.
Music makes me feel New York 70-90s mafia hip hop ghetto..LA Crips Bloods Mexicans..Chicago gangsters
i guess good storytelling runs in the family
brilliant, who thought us Nas fans would get to see where Illmatic started
thank you
I'm staying in QB right now for the time being. I still can't believe my rap hero is from here. This like Graceland for me but I definitely keep to myself. I'm only gonna be here for a lil while. Too many people got problems with life on these streets but thank God it's not 1994 here anymore. You can just tell these streets got stories to tell if the streets could speak.
I wish I had a lil bro. Nas and Jungle sounded like they had a blast when they were younger. I'm just stuck with my sisters...
me too😂
Prolific Pops man I don't even have siblings
ProHunterYT Damn, that sucks, man
Prolific Pops yh its shit
@Schwarnold Wartzinaeger Same bro lol
From Nas demanding Jungle take his clothes off outside to both their reactions to the chipped tooth these memories are too funny and amazing. Great interview 👍👍
boy Jabari was a hot head back in the day he was on the streets grinding but when he realize that Nasir was on this shit he wanted to help out and get involved Jungle is a cool humble and real guy
dope, sound like you really was tapped in with them.
Jungle just took us all down a trip down straight through memory lane
facts!
Down MEMORY LANE!
I made it part of my trip stop when we traveled to NY.
That sound like a nas rhyme..... on the top bunk letting THE TECH GO OFF fucking up the bedroom walls
😁 trust
Jungle cool as a fan. Dude got a legendary brother and yet he plays his position. Jungle I see you man. I like yr style kid lol.
Nas the realest man my fave mc of all time nuff respect.
nuff said
Great insight into the place that produced (in my opinion) the greatest rapper of all time. Illmatic still sounds as fresh today as it did 20 years ago, classic just isn't the word. There's something special about Queensbridge, for a single housing project to produce so many of the legends of Hip Hop is amazing. Respect from the UK.
Not even the best rapper from NYC. Ha
@@ItsBriiiiii go back to bed
@@ItsBriiiiii who is it then? (of all time and in ny)
@@quintonrobinson-holder7009 Rakim
@@ItsBriiiiii fair.
my fav rapper is nas but love rakim so i can see it. the real origin of rhyme scheme rappers.
the words of encouragement at the end, priceless. lol
This is gold.
Chicken Wing coming down on the string !!! thats love man real shit !!!
Memory lane probably my fav song from nas....definitely my fav illmatic joint
Is that the staircase on the "Nas is like" video when Preem says : You ready Nas? Whenever you are Preem.
Wutang Clan yes
Looks like it
It is
Positive
Great memories NAS IS THE GREATEST
The way Jungle snapped on that I Am album intro with Horse is crazy. Love from South Africa Jung and Nasir
@D Jay which part did you NOT understand, Mr Funny guy?
This the feelings i get when i go into my high school and old house across the street from it. I cant go back into my old house because some ppl living there now but i get chills each time i ride pass. Its more then just a building to you, its where you grew up at.
the chipped tooth story, hahahaha very funny
Man you asked EXCELLENT questions!!! Many people may underestimate how potent this interview is. People all over take tours of caves, old buildings, hear tales from the elders, etc. Why should hip-hop be ANY different? answer is: its not. I sincerely enjoyed this interview more than anything I've seen recently. props to Jungle and Bad but the style of interview was on point. GREAT JOB MY MAN!!!
and so we now know how Nas has chipped his tooth :)
Nature lied to us.
I love jungle's words of encouragement about the dude being the future. ctfu
2:13 stairway for Nas is Like
ohh shiit
He was trying to put the tooth back and started crying 🤣🤣🤣
My boy Jungle!!! He a real 1
I would've loved to have been in that staircase listening to NAS and AZ go back and fourth.
It’s interesting how those old NewYork rap records are the perfect soundtrack to the city. Same way the Chronic & Doggystyle are the perfect soundtrack to L.A.
back in the early 90's is was a dangerous area compared to today
I swear bro it was very tough back then...
Depends on where you live. N.Y softened up. Chicago got more rough
The Guiliani era
@@Eagle7433 That's a good thing too that NY softened up I don't care what anybody says. Big difference between what you see on TV and then actually living life around these streets/projects. Nobody deserves to get hit with bullets flying out of nowhere or getting robbed cause you're not from there. I thank God NY got safer. Still.. one gotta never leave your guards down.
Facts. Washington heights softened up a lot too. Hell flatbush ain’t as bad anymore
Big up to Jungle for doing this. I used to think Jungle was hard to get up with because you rarely see him.
It's crazy man I live in the hood and the projects of NYC and to see this it's just something makes me proud and smile that someone can be so successful coming out the hood. Most rappers now a days don't know what it's like to come out the hood and projects.
Actually Speechless.. This is Epic.
same
Be careful with that "this where IT all started talk" before KRS One misinterpret that joint again... Lol
yoooooooo lmaooooooo
KRS-One is confused nowadays lol
Don't matter, NAS would eat KRS anyway...💪💪💪
lol
Illmatic favorite album of all time. Was 13-14 and mesmerized by that shit man. Always wanted to see greatness in dude. Def made it
lmao he said I was taking the second doo doo of my life
That was dope big up jungle, funny guy..
Awesome VIBE!
Thanks for this!
This was marvelous even though I already knew how my favorite rapper chipped his tooth but the way jungle told it and kinda in cinema form had me in tears and reminded me of how me and my brother was ,we need a nas movie frfr
This was really dope.
That was a great genuine story. I Loved that. Pure Love. Nothing but respect❤❤❤🙏🙌🏼.
Great interview one of the best videos I've ever seen
This is great, props for getting it done. I also think this is the apartment shown in Nas' 'The World Is Yours (Q-Tip Remix)' video he did in '94.
this was dope!#illmatic
cool to here stories about Nas and his lil brother Jungle...their relationship growing up reminds me of my lil bro, even though we didn't grow up as hard as they did.
Beautiful interview
Great introspective to a great artist who made a classic album
reppin Queens till my casket drop
Damn, dude said they moved into nas old apartment after they moved out!!!! Been living in the hood for 20 plus years cuz!!!!!?? DAMN!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking the same thing like my goodness man you got to get up out of there lmao .
This was dope af. Good energy
The whole reason I got ILLMATIC tatted on me. Greatest Hip Hop album of all time IMHO, although shout to Cormega who I heard say the word previously on PHD album a few years before...
Good documentary for a legend

I been to qb before. If you drive on the queensboro bridge, it looks like your riding over top of the buildings. Pretty cool view
That chip tooth story was hilarious 😂😂😂

NAS IS THE GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME
Period.....i keep telling people
l think that was the stair nas was sitting rapping in the music video nas is like!
this video changed me.
This shit is so dope son I wish other artists did this I know if I blow up I would do this peace ya.
'Let me take a trip down memory lane'
I lost my vcard in back off carvin high school football game and numerous lapdance rooms of strip clubs across America peace too this hip hop illmatic goat.
It’s gotta suck to be a recording artist in your own right and have this dude constantly ask about your brother and not you. He takes in stride and holds it down for his brother, family and friends.
Nah, because clearly jungle has mad love and respect for his brother... that's why he's never hated on him..
spitting image of his father but Jung the man out there the whole Ps know that man.
That's what's up... history!!!
oochie wallie was invented in this room ahhhhhhh I'm dyin lol
