I was one of the mid 70s deejays from Ultra Sounds Disco. Big influences and mentors were Dr Bob Lee, Jap and Brucie, Phase Brothers, Disco Twins, the pioneers just before the birth of Hip Hop. 5 of my cousins were raised in Queensbridge, 4 were raised in Ravenswood. Their parents worried about their children going and coming to school, work, friends, the stores. None of them had cars..public transportation only. My mom and her childhood family moved into Queensbridge in 1939, the year it opened.
As you know, it has 6 floors. In an effort to decrease building costs, the elevator only stopped at the first, third, and fifth floors. They lived on the fourth floor, so they had the choice of getting off on the third floor and walking up one flight of stairs or getting off on the fifth floor and walking down one floor. The newly formed NYCHA didn’t allow new residents a choice, including disabled residents. One the heels of the Great Depression, the apartments filled up as soon as they were finished.
For many, these apartments provided heat, “real bathrooms”, hot water, a new kitchen with a couple of cabinets, a window, gas stove, oven, and 1930’s style sink.
A “state of the art” nursery school was established within the community, complete with care for sick children whose families couldn’t afford a doctor. The centrally located community center had a solid wood floor (it probably still does). It served as a roller skating rink, an auditorium for community events, community meetings, free (basic, health and dental services. It was a link to community activities.
My mom’s older sister continued to live in Queensbridge and raised her 5 children, in the standard 2 bedroom apartments. My mom’s younger sister moved to Ravenswood and raised her 4 daughters there.
I was raised in a small town outside the city, but we spent a lot of time visiting my our two aunts and their families.
You may not be interested in any of this, but it’s part of the two communities, history
