- In this 2020 TEDxSeattle talk, see how Caroline Catlin’s own experience with illness inspired her to connect to others facing similar challenges.
After a diagnosis of a rare form of brain cancer, Caroline Catlin was forced to confront her own mortality and come face to face with the complex emotions surrounding death and dying. Through photography and writing, she has learned to see the beauty in the end of life, and reframed her perspective on her own cancer in the process.
1:35 Catlin explains her evolving interest in the emotions of those around her and how she records these emotions.
4:45 The effect of a cancer diagnosis on Catlin’s understanding of emotion.
6:40 Catlin describes her feelings while taking photos of those who are dying.

During his TED Talk, Jason B. Rosenthal give a humorous view of loss and grief: www.ted.com/ta... Caroline Catlin is a writer, photographer, and nap enthusiast. She exudes such a positive, bubbly personality that her desire to dive into intense and difficult topics may come as a surprise to some-but for Catlin, joy and loss feel deeply intertwined.
In January 2019, Catlin found out she had brain cancer. A long-time advocate for mental health, Catlin suddenly found herself dealing with trauma and devastating illness first hand. With the help of her “sunshine tornado” partner, she made it through multiple rounds of radiation and chemo that were followed by coffeehouse jaunts with her dog and close friends in tow. The road was long, but she made a point to, “practice letting joy in.” Through it all, Catlin found the strength to process her own journey through trauma and to look with an inquisitive and sensitive eye at how other people function through life’s most difficult moments.
This work has taken Catlin and her camera to the bedside of those breathing their last breath and into the lives of individuals dealing with intense grief and loss. Catlin’s research and work in behavioral health and developmental trauma have inspired her to reform the way health, illness, and disability are portrayed in the media. Through her lens we can discover the art within caregiving and therapy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Grief is love with nowhere to go.
Thank you for courage and for sharing your story ❤
Love that!
Grief changed me: since my brother died, I see life in many different way.
Sometimes I remember the moment I held his hand as a photograph, as a moment.
Fernando, I am sorry for your losing your dear brother. I am happy you remember the moment "you held his hand as a photograph, as a moment"

@@fernandozapateroarriaga7926 Thank you for sharing my friend. I am sorry for your loss - it is hard to lose close family.
Who else cried or got close? Because wow, everything she said was needed and it made me very sappy to hear about that 3 year old.
I like your authenticity in how you are relentlessly true to yourself. Miracles happen everyday- I hope you are granted great health in addition to your other super powers.
Thank you for this topic. I have many photos like this, taken around my son's bed, over his 28yrs, before his passing. 💞
Death is reminder that life is too short.
*That's why you should spend your time with things that you love and the ones that you love!*
but in the end, life is the longest thing we've got right?:)
Yeah, thank you for this reminder 😃 sometimes we knew everything, but still these reminders are necessary. God bless you 🌼

Wow this is amazing information I can see how emotions can relate to colors. Different colors do carry a certain mood. Awesome analogy, thanks for giving us a peek into your world!
This is one of the most heartfelt TED talks I've ever seen. Wow.
Thank you for sharing your heart with us! I have lost many close family and friends in my short 28 years, and grief is my largest struggle. My heart and mind can’t handle it, so I appreciate your insight. I wish you a happy and joyous journey, no matter the length.
Very touching she almost made me realize one of my colleagues I probably never knew and it also remind me of my near death experience and I should not be alive today but I walked out of that hospital two weeks after my hatchet to the head.
Great story thanks for sharing

Absolutely Right. I 'm from india 🙏
I love her.
It just shows how imperfect creatures we truly are, with minds bound to our fragile bodies with an internal death timer.
Most of us keep waiting to do the things we want to do and because of that, many of us never get to do them. If you don't start doing the things you dream of now, you may never get the chance. Death is final, you don't get a second chance.
Enjoy every moment and second because it does not last forever
Nice speech 👍
Nothing does
Appreciate health while you have it.

That story at the beginning was so cute
I am really happy there is someone I can relate to; we're not that similarI but it's cool that I'm not the only slightly weird one lol
Thank You ✨💜✨

We're all dancing in the space between life and death and you glide across the floor with grace. Your moves are beautiful!
I was diagnosed with my first brain tumour at the age of 21 in 2008. It was a grade 2 diffuse astrocytoma. The doctors believed it was there prior to discovery. They believed it was growing at a slow rate my entire life. Then I was diagnosed with two more brain tumors in 2017. Lime size. Surgeries were only a few months apart. They were more aggressive. They were Anaplastic Astrocytomas grade III. Just one grade below a GMB. These often turn into a glioblastomas over time so that concerns me a bit. I’ve had 3 brain tumor surgeries total. I'm on my 4th brain tumor now. It's still considered an AA3. It's not operable. I wish it were. I would absolutely get a 4th surgery. My next MRI is coming up early next month. I start my 12th cycle of oral chemo the day after Easter. It's so challenging not letting this illness define me. I am more than my brain tumor/cancer. When you get a daunting diagnosis like this, it kind of consumes a lot of your thoughts, energy and time. You don't mean to be self focused but you are in survival mode.
I farted this morning and the smoke alarm went off.
Not sure if they are related, but it's a sign that a great day is comin'!!
You’re an amazing young woman. Thank you for this talk and for taking the photographs you do. What a gift you are blessing grieving families with.💕📸
You have fully embraced that in the face of death you must live your life to the full. A lesson for us all to learn, and one that, if we don’t, we give up this precious life to fear. Thank you for sharing your very personal story which, looking through the comments has profoundly touched us all.
yeah, i was told it was all in my head (emotionally) when i was very sick with hydrocephalus, to the point i could barely function, by 2 different hospitals. when my vision began to be effected i had a friend take me to a different hospital where i later had the neurosurgery i needed for years.
Going to have a bit of a sob now peace

In the Philippines we have a saying called “Sana all” or “I hope everyone”
This is usually seen posted in social media by the users/commentators who aspires to be, aspires to have, and aspires to achieve in life based from what they see in social media.
e.g. A famous celebrity posted about his/her struggles before she has had become successful in his/her career.
“Wow! Sana All”
e.g. A friend of you posted a photo of her newly purchased iPhone 12 after months of saving money.
“Sana all”
stay present and enjoy with curiosity ' the moment' that is all 'ever' exists
3rd comment, how is there 25 likes with 4 views? That makes no sense
