  • G’day All
This is a video of me slabbing some Hillgrove Gum with my Stihl 090 chainsaw and homemade mill. The average width of this cut was 55cm, the cut length was 2.7m and the cut duration was around 12 minutes (probably 10 minutes of actual cutting time). I am using a 3 foot bar with a full chisel cross cut chain. I will do a video on how to make the chainsaw mill if people are interested?

Australia has the most hardwoods in the highest Janka hardness ratings. Ive only just bought a chainsaw mill for my 395XP. The log i have is a very old dry ‘stick’ of fiddleback redbox. Busted the heads off the roofing screws just trying to penetrate the ends of the logs. It was a no go. I think i may be pushing it with the 395!

Is this on private property? I wonder if its possible to get a permit to mill in state forests.

Yep private property, not sure about the permit, make friends with a farmer.

Great set up. Is that an 090 or 070. Also nothing like a good slab of red gum. Looking to start milling my own timber because it seems kinda a shame to turn some of the big logs I have into fire wood

Thanks for the comment, its an 090. I agree with you. Slabbing is hard work but its worth it and it gets addictive. I have another video of making this chainsaw mill.

Mitch Tarrant yeah. Saw that video. Not much of a welder though so may have to go sweet talk my mate at the local men's shed and do some horse trading. I assume you are up north somewhere. I am down south in central Victoria

Haha, horse trading, nice. Yep, in the New England Region NSW.

nice milling. your mill is inspiring to diy mill builders. You probably know but that slab would be so much cleaner with a ripping chain. Keep up the good work!

They sure are, this Hillgrove gum is pretty hard work, I wounder what something like Buloke ore Ebony would be like.
