Blend this up with a little milk, sugar, and touch a vanilla. One of my favorite aguas frescas when it's available.

In Miami once in the early '90s I visited a Cuban milkshake shop in Hialeah and saw "mamey" listed as one of the milkshake flavors. I asked what it was, and the lady behind the counter said, "The best thing you've ever had in your life." I ordered a batido de mamey (mamey milkshake), and it was indeed the most delicious thing I'd ever tried. I think the pairing of the ripe mamey fruit with the vanilla in the ice cream (and they might even add additional vanilla extract when making the milkshake) makes it even more sublime.

Here in Houston they sell agua de Mamey, but it isn’t an agua it’s a milkshake/licuado. I made it with mamey, cold cashew milk, dates and ice if you want - so delicious and refreshing!

I got a jam made of Mamey, Scotch Bonnetts peppers, and Raspberries the other day and it is my favorite thing ever. I really think it's a great fruit to mix in fresh and make something taste like a compote that's been cooking down for a while. Burned sugar is right on.

These are very expensive trees here in Los Angeles. You can also buy canned Mamey Sapote fruit in Asian and Latino markets. Sapote, or Zapote is an Aztec/Nahautl name applied to several unrelated Mexican and Central American fruits.

I have 3 baby mamey trees (planted a year ago), and I'm about to start a 4th as soon as I finish eating the fruit.
Buying a fresh mamey is like $10-15 here in California, but there are a lot of pockets of frost-free microclimates around where you can grow your own if you are patient.

In Guyana , we have many different varieties, some grow on large trees and some on small bushes. We grate it and use it to stop runny yummy when green. Also, to get them ripened well, there is a little black pointy stick at the bottom of it. Once dropped off, pick it, wipe to get rid of the film of dust ( has brownish dust) and stick it in a bowl of rice and cover, gently pressing a finger to see if it yields, meaning it's ripe. It should be eaten softer than you did to get the oh lala effect. There is an art to eating it. You open it up and squeeze one end, preferably the bottom and the soft flesh pop up and you squeeze as you eat. Avoid the white bit, it looks like what comes in 🥝 but it's on just the top half of the fruit , not running through. I don't think you did this fruit justice or reviewed it like it should have been. It's called sapodilla in Guyana.

Found this channel a couple weeks ago. Been working my way back slowly, but had to jump back several years to find the mamey. They're in season at the California ethnic grocers right now, and I bought one because they're delicious (pricey though, so it's a treat), so I figured I'd watch while eating mine.

This was my mother's favorite childhood food and we eat it everytime we visit family in Mexico, just like you did with the spoon. Similar to papaya in the way that it's eaten to support a healthy bowel movement but a lot less sweet and watery to eat. Gonna have to hunt down a place to buy this in Texas now.

Mameys are actually native from southern Mexico to southern Costa Rica and even can stretch into Colombia. The fruit is amazing and in Mexico it is used to make milk shakes and icecream. Also, there are other types of sapotes, in Mexico there is sapote negro it is described as eating chocolate pudding though it doesnt really taste like chocolate puddings, to some it does

I went out and got one of these and was really excited to try it, but I didn't judge its ripeness correctly. It felt like something was coating my tongue and the insides of my mouth, like a latex but not quite. :( At least I'll know when it's ACTUALLY ripe next time, lol.

I finally got to try one of these, they had some in my local produce store for the first time and I snatched one up. Sorry I didn't get it from your Miami Fruit affiliate link! First thing that surprised me is that the outside was spiney: I got several small splinters from handling it. Inside it tasted a lot like boiled carrots and sweet potatoes, or a Gajar Halwa or something like that. I liked it, but my wife and kids weren't thrilled by it. Overall it was a nice to try but we probably won't be buying them anymore.

I have been looking for this fruit for years, but have never come across it here in my area of California. However, I found Mamey fruit pops (I think they call them helados, but I very well could be mistaken. I tried them and I am glad that I did, very subtle flavors, bubble gum being among them. While I know it probably had some sweteners in it, this brand usually uses whole fruit more so than artificial ones. At any rate, I am now a big fan , the only bad thing being that my 8 year old found them and likes them too, so now I have adjust my supply for competition :P Thanks for posting this one.

Jared Rydelek I've been haunting just about every Latin American grocery stores within about 100 my home. but have never come across one - I live in kind of a Geographic oddity in that the town in which I live is very, shall we say "monochromatic" when it comes to ethnic diversity -but that does not mean I have given up :) I'm sure that I, or one of my family members will come across it and then I will have a chance at trying the genuine article
But yes. the ice cream is amazing

In 2001 Hakim Bey (Peter Lamborn Wilson, 1945-2022) wrote about "...the exquisite Cuban fruit mamey, which cannot be imported fresh into the U.S. because its seed is hallucinogenic (or so I'm told)."
I'm not sure if this is true, though.

I guess I didn't get a ripe one. The one I tried was somewhat hard, not sweet at all, more like a inferior sort of pumpkin. I thought it might be a vegetable to be baked with something.
In the future I'll look for a ripe one.
