Blend this up with a little milk, sugar, and touch a vanilla. One of my favorite aguas frescas when it's available.
Just had this for breakfast, one of the better fruits for licuados!
So it’s a liquado?
My friend introduced me to these. He called it a milkshake
In Miami once in the early '90s I visited a Cuban milkshake shop in Hialeah and saw "mamey" listed as one of the milkshake flavors. I asked what it was, and the lady behind the counter said, "The best thing you've ever had in your life." I ordered a batido de mamey (mamey milkshake), and it was indeed the most delicious thing I'd ever tried. I think the pairing of the ripe mamey fruit with the vanilla in the ice cream (and they might even add additional vanilla extract when making the milkshake) makes it even more sublime.
It's like a big orange avocado.
It looks so beautiful
Hopefully it doesn't taste like oily paste like avocado
I’ve had 4 of these in my order from Miami Fruit, and yeah they tasted 90% like sweet potato with brown sugar, but there were also hints of flavor similar to papaya in my opinion. Delicious!
nice! sounds like you had some good ones!
Caramelized sweet potato to be exact!
Man. The first time someone gave me one of these my reaction was way more... enthusiastic about the flavor. Crazy good.
Tbf he did say he was jetlagged. He also may have had it before, so not a big surprise
I discovered you from the "How to cook Breadfruit" video.
Here's a sub for you.
One of my favorite fruits when I’m in Mexico. Tastes like a desert pudding, bit of coconut as well, but soft like a ripe avocado.
"Méimi sapote."
Here in Houston they sell agua de Mamey, but it isn’t an agua it’s a milkshake/licuado. I made it with mamey, cold cashew milk, dates and ice if you want - so delicious and refreshing!
that sounds amazing
I got a jam made of Mamey, Scotch Bonnetts peppers, and Raspberries the other day and it is my favorite thing ever. I really think it's a great fruit to mix in fresh and make something taste like a compote that's been cooking down for a while. Burned sugar is right on.
These are very expensive trees here in Los Angeles. You can also buy canned Mamey Sapote fruit in Asian and Latino markets. Sapote, or Zapote is an Aztec/Nahautl name applied to several unrelated Mexican and Central American fruits.
I can't imagine eating a canned one.
Weird Explorer let's just say it's really off putting
Actually this is the one they refer to, original from central America. The south American zapote is different.
I have 3 baby mamey trees (planted a year ago), and I'm about to start a 4th as soon as I finish eating the fruit.
Buying a fresh mamey is like $10-15 here in California, but there are a lot of pockets of frost-free microclimates around where you can grow your own if you are patient.
In Guyana , we have many different varieties, some grow on large trees and some on small bushes. We grate it and use it to stop runny yummy when green. Also, to get them ripened well, there is a little black pointy stick at the bottom of it. Once dropped off, pick it, wipe to get rid of the film of dust ( has brownish dust) and stick it in a bowl of rice and cover, gently pressing a finger to see if it yields, meaning it's ripe. It should be eaten softer than you did to get the oh lala effect. There is an art to eating it. You open it up and squeeze one end, preferably the bottom and the soft flesh pop up and you squeeze as you eat. Avoid the white bit, it looks like what comes in 🥝 but it's on just the top half of the fruit , not running through. I don't think you did this fruit justice or reviewed it like it should have been. It's called sapodilla in Guyana.
I’m glad you explained that!
I've had Mamey ice cream. Saw the actual fruit for the first time this morning for $3+. I held off until I could see your review of it; you HAD to have at least one! I hope They're still there the next time I visit the store.
Found this channel a couple weeks ago. Been working my way back slowly, but had to jump back several years to find the mamey. They're in season at the California ethnic grocers right now, and I bought one because they're delicious (pricey though, so it's a treat), so I figured I'd watch while eating mine.
Very good explanation. Haven't had this since I been to Mexico! Really want to find some.
This was my mother's favorite childhood food and we eat it everytime we visit family in Mexico, just like you did with the spoon. Similar to papaya in the way that it's eaten to support a healthy bowel movement but a lot less sweet and watery to eat. Gonna have to hunt down a place to buy this in Texas now.
I'm sure you can find some there, good luck :)
If you're near a Fiesta they have them
Mameys are actually native from southern Mexico to southern Costa Rica and even can stretch into Colombia. The fruit is amazing and in Mexico it is used to make milk shakes and icecream. Also, there are other types of sapotes, in Mexico there is sapote negro it is described as eating chocolate pudding though it doesnt really taste like chocolate puddings, to some it does
Ive tried this in Nicaragua. Its very good. We rented a house and it was my last day seeing my mother and we bought some fruit and this was one of the fruit we ate.
I’ve had mamey ice cream before in the US at a place run by a Mexican family. It’s one of their most popular flavors.
JTMusicbox the paletas are the best imo
I tried mamey ice cream the other day and it was so good
First time I ate this having no idea what it was, I just called it the pumpkin pie fruit. It looks, tastes and feels just like a traditional American pumpkin pie.
I went out and got one of these and was really excited to try it, but I didn't judge its ripeness correctly. It felt like something was coating my tongue and the insides of my mouth, like a latex but not quite. :( At least I'll know when it's ACTUALLY ripe next time, lol.
You can get latex from the Zapote tree sap
Absolutely right!
The mamey fruit is very sensitive. You have to eat it at just the right ripeness or it will look delicious but taste terrible. The difference is like night and day.
Found this at Walmart today in Mobile, Alabama. So excited, I just have to wait for it to get a little softer. 😩
nice find! Enjoy!
I finally got to try one of these, they had some in my local produce store for the first time and I snatched one up. Sorry I didn't get it from your Miami Fruit affiliate link! First thing that surprised me is that the outside was spiney: I got several small splinters from handling it. Inside it tasted a lot like boiled carrots and sweet potatoes, or a Gajar Halwa or something like that. I liked it, but my wife and kids weren't thrilled by it. Overall it was a nice to try but we probably won't be buying them anymore.
I have been looking for this fruit for years, but have never come across it here in my area of California. However, I found Mamey fruit pops (I think they call them helados, but I very well could be mistaken. I tried them and I am glad that I did, very subtle flavors, bubble gum being among them. While I know it probably had some sweteners in it, this brand usually uses whole fruit more so than artificial ones. At any rate, I am now a big fan , the only bad thing being that my 8 year old found them and likes them too, so now I have adjust my supply for competition :P Thanks for posting this one.
+izonker I think you may be able to track this one down. If you have any latin american super markets in your area look there, possibly even whole foods may have them. If not though, as ice cream they are really good!
Jared Rydelek I've been haunting just about every Latin American grocery stores within about 100 my home. but have never come across one - I live in kind of a Geographic oddity in that the town in which I live is very, shall we say "monochromatic" when it comes to ethnic diversity -but that does not mean I have given up :) I'm sure that I, or one of my family members will come across it and then I will have a chance at trying the genuine article
But yes. the ice cream is amazing
I had one of those last week and it’s what made me look up this video!
Just had one of these for breakfast. Pretty accurate description. but boy are these old videos rough on the ears. Ya, imagine a mashup of papaya, pumpkin and sweet potato, and crank up the sugar a bit.
We make smoothies of this with carnation Milk , vanilla extract in DR. Try it u will like it
This video needs more views! :)
In 2001 Hakim Bey (Peter Lamborn Wilson, 1945-2022) wrote about "...the exquisite Cuban fruit mamey, which cannot be imported fresh into the U.S. because its seed is hallucinogenic (or so I'm told)."
I'm not sure if this is true, though.
I guess I didn't get a ripe one. The one I tried was somewhat hard, not sweet at all, more like a inferior sort of pumpkin. I thought it might be a vegetable to be baked with something.
In the future I'll look for a ripe one.
Yeah you can get them like that and wait until they soften on the counter.
It’s amazing but I found several in Eldorado New Mexico in local supermarket.
I once got a mamey sapote from the grocery store and it didn’t taste as good as I thought it would be, I need to try and taste a perfectly fresh one
In the begin, i believed who was a lucuma (Pouteria Lucuma) who here in Chile is used for very tasty desserts (is one of the best flavors for ice cream!) but looks who are related. Try to found it, is very good.
Cikus are from Latin America, where they are commonly called sapodillas (or zapodillas), which means "small zapote".
come to venezuela a try our version of this, we have this fruit but we also have Nispero, very much like the indian chiku but the size of a baseball to a softball
Dear Weird Explorer - what do you do for a living that you find yourself in all these exotic places??? *fascinated* Thanks for all your videos!
I'm a contortionist :)
This is Mamey Sapodilla or Mamey Sapote. The sapodilla from South America (Manilkara zapota.is a different fruit). Smaller, lookalike too. Mamey Sapote will bear on the branches. Sapodilla bears only at the tip of the branches.
You should review a butternut pumpkin + make a salad out of it
In México is a fruit that is used for make icecream and is my favourite flavor :3 you should tasted
I used to eat so much of these when I was growing up in the Dominican Republic. Now is so expensive in the markets in the U.S.
🇩🇴 here! Same. I can’t even find it here in NYC.
@@ElizabethGonzalez-jt7ns i know. To find it Try Food Bazar.
Nice use of the Looney tunes song. Also since you said sweet potatoes I'm now wondering how these would taste with marshmallows, like my family eats sweet potato 😂
nope! just eat cold! heavenly
I'm hesitant to order, would you prefer this or canister egg fruit? And is this different than Chico? Or this is Chico? Is Philippines, it looks like there's a similar one, the Chico but it's smaller than this.
It's different than chico, more creamy and like sweet pumpkin. egg fruit is good, but easy to get tired of.
@@WeirdExplorer thank you for replying, I maybe order the Mamey sapote, as I tried the canistel. I always watch you’re videos, you’re the only one really accurate describing the taste, and clear explanation. Thank you so Much.
I love this fruit try it
Can I boil mamey seeds like durian seeds?
Nope! They are used sparingly as a spice in some parts of the world, BUT they're also poisonous. I wouldn't recommend trying to eat them unless you know someone who knows how to do it properly.
Looks similar to "ciku" that we have in Malaysia
aethelfrith They are closely related to eachother
It taste like Pumpkin sweet potato caramel and a touch of anise
Good good good variety
so soft, looks yummy
It's pronounced mah ... may (Spanish pronounciation since it's Latin American) rojo (red). Love this fruit! Tastes just like carnalized sweet potato! Did you review the sapote negro? It's known as the chocolate pudding fruit! Much less sweet than the red one , small, black inside, & very faint pudding taste
I love sweet potatoe.
🔥🔥🔥
How do you look exactly the same now as 8 years ago!?
apparently exotic fruits are the fountain of youth
Mamey Sapote is the most expensive sweet potato.
The name sounds like “Momay sapota”
it looks like an orange avocado.
the texture is very avocadolike too
And it is starchy
Aka Mommy Sapote
Hi bro,i like your video,im from tropical country and i want to plant mamey but no mamey sapote tree here,if you don't mind can you mail me the mamey sapote seeds,ITS seem you are very kind person, ill be very happy for your giving, this is not a joke(very serious), thanks bro!😘😍😘😍😘
Oh i forgotten to mention that it is related to the pumpkin
animaniacs
they call it lucuma
Thats different from Peru another fruit, but related
I hate to be a stickler for pronunciation...it's proper pronunciation is Mom _ey.
😍😘😘
Have you ever heard of the Ross Sapote, the green sapote, the lucuma? -- all fruits OF POUTERIA FAMILY distinctly SUPERIOR to the canistel, even better than the famous Mamey Sapote.
Had the Lucuma when I was in Bolivia a few years back: ruclips.net/video/9ogBe9GMXp0/видео.html
Also a weird one, the sun sapote: ruclips.net/video/XM6Jj92WkJc/видео.html
No ross or green yet though, one day...
UNRIPE
Please don't play that music again
they call it lucuma
