I hope I'm not breaking the rules, but I am surprise no one in the video mention the mistake relating to that piece Fon Davis is showing off. In the Galaxy quest movie, during that joke when they are pulling out of the shipyard and they scratch the side of the ship against the wall that prop represents. That is where the mistake is, because of the angle of the ship isn't as sharp, the port warp nacelle of the Protectorate has to vanish in order for it to work. My pet theory on why we love love LOVE 'Galaxy Quest' so much -- apart from it being a truly endearing, wonderful movie -- is that there was never a part 2, 3, 4 or 5 to potentially disappoint us. We get to love this perfect, singular story over and over again.
They need to have a whole show with these two talking to model makers, making and painting their own. Maybe even an occasional contest show for model making like what was made for movie makeup.
I was working in the server room at ILM when they did Pearl Harbor, and I remember them wheeling the battleship through the parking lot. "What's that for?" I asked. "We're going to blow it up!" - [said with such a big grin] Everyone from the IT side of the house wanted to go watch, but we weren't allowed near. sigh.
Man... I could listen to your stories involving Grant all day long... it's like the old saying: "We die twice. Once, when our bodies stop, and the final death when people stop talking about us and stop saying our names." Never stop, and he'll never be completely gone.
Again, two of my favourite scifi films Galaxy Quest and Starship Troopers! Galaxy Quest awesomely acted by the best actors, hilariously funny and a big piss take but with grenades of sadness. Crying with laughter moments later tears of sadness. Brilliant film.

I love that movie so much. Anyone who has ever been to a sci-fi con (or any fan con for that matter), will get the real humor in the movie. It's funny on the face of it, but it's so much more funny if you get the inside jokes.
If you haven't, you should check out the documentary they made a few years ago, "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary". There's a lot more to the movie than just poking fun at Star Trek. It is, in every sense, a love letter to fans of sci-fi and fantasy.
"Galaxy Quest: The Inside Story Hardcover" by Matt McAllister says that Adam was responsible for the Protector scraping its nose along the side of the dock in that fantastic scene when the ship lanches.
As a parody film, Galaxy Quest turned out to be a great film! When I used to como paint archery equipment, I used file folders, and they would dry in between uses, and became better the more I used them. The coats of paint made them impervious to the solvents after so many uses!
Great video. I could listen to it for hours. I was fortunate enough to be the PM for the stage shoots on GQ and Pearl Harbor. I remember holding my breadth when we had the Oklahoma on a 30 degree angle up in the air for some shots. One day when everyone was on lunch break, and I was on fire watch (we had just shot a bunch of shots of smoke coming out of the Oklahoma) and real smoke started coming out of it. Apparently heat had built up and started a real fire. I had to blast it with a fire extinguisher. Great times!
7:35 - according to 'Historical Documents' the designation NTE stood for "Not The Enterprise" in case they stand up in a court and can say: "It's not the Enterprise - it says so right here!"

But what i actually wanted to say, is yes to OP, more of this, i love the inside talks, and Galaxy Quest was indeed amazing and it's cool to see how it became this cult classic, because at the time nobody i knew heard of it.
Another outstanding episode, listening to two unbelievable creators reminiscing about what they truly love. My father was an emmy winning editor in the TV and movie industry his entire life, so this is great to see. Thank you guys, its always a pleasure seeing and hearing how much you truly enjoyed what you did.
@@tested He flew out to CA to work on set on one of the Star Trek movies ( I have to ask my mother which one), he did a movie called Dream House (I was on that set), he did SO MANY TV commercials I cant go through them all. He won his emmy for outstanding computer graphics. He did all graphics for the Super Bowl every other yr., NCAA, CBS, HBO movie opening, MTV, etc. My Grandfather owned MovieLab here in NY. My mother was a matte painter and airbrush artist. So I have the industry all over in my family. . . except for me.
My Mom just watched Galaxy Quest for the first time last night. She enjoyed it and I was able to show her some of the in-jokes and behind the scenes anecdotes. Did not know AS worked on it.
I wasn't able to go to the show to see Galaxy Quest, so I ended up renting it as we did in the 90's :-), but boy was I surprised when I accidently fiddled with the sound track and found that there was a Thermian language track! FOR THE WHOLE MOVIE! I could not stop laughing! A very fun movie!!
I always like the Star Trek aesthetic. Particularly the Aztecing that The Next Generation really capitalized on. It feels real, like someone bolted and welded it together in a drydock, but unlike the "lived in space" shows where it's either some Han Solo-esque rogue or "doomsday was last week" scenario like BSG, they actually cared for it like you'd expect a ship with hundreds of crew to do. The exterior had that look that made you think all the NCOs were constantly cleaning the ship spotless, which is something I could totally see Riker ordering. Part of what I loved about Star Trek was that it felt like a hopeful future where we could work with everyone and get through anything together, and the ship aesthetics also supported that.
I was just watching Galaxy Quest a week ago and it makes me tear up with joy every time without fail 🥲 a true movie for the fans and the franchises we hold most dear

It's amazing how much work these people put into just seconds of a shot. That's what is incredible to me. No wonder these movies cost a hundred million dollars to make.
I worked at a movie theater when this movie came out. I had to assemble the print, then pre-screen it to make sure the print was OK. I wasn't expecting much--the marketing was pretty bad for the film. It looked like it was going to be very cheesy and lame/not funny. But I was really blown away by how much fun it was, and how funny and engaging the story was AND by how well done the visual and sound effects were and it's still one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies.
I just 'forced' my son to watch it again with me. Still just as epic. Plus this time I could point out that Gwen is Ripley in Alien (and Aliens) as I've also made him watch them the previous week :)
Galaxy Quest is an extremely inconvenient film; for example, the time I was on my way to bed when my husband stopped channel flipping on GQ, about 45 minutes in. Of course I had to watch the rest; I was sleepy the next morning, but happy.
Galaxy Quest is just so good, it holds up after watching it dozens of times. And super casting, where else will you see Tim Allen and Tony Shalhoub together (not to mention Sigourney Weaver as a blonde!).

I can realy see the love those two have for movie props and making techniques, its so hearthwarming. It was very interesting to see this perspective - those are details you do not notice mostly but you would notice if they were missing and they are so nicely and cleverly designed quite often. Galaxy quest was well designed and is one of my favourite movies - I still wish it had real TV series - we have The Orville now I suppose at least but I love the Galaxy quest ship way more - its such simple yet beautiful design!
And a brilliant design which inverted the Enterprise. For those few who aren't aware, while the Enterprise had a disk-shaped primary hull and cylindrical secondary hull that held the nacelles, the Protector has a cylindrical primary pull and the two sweeping "wings" form part of a disk that holds the nacelles.
Remember the tv show Riptide? There was a boat named the same. 20 years ago there were two guys who bought it and repair the boat in the slip next to my grandmother’s boat. It took them years and it was cool to watch them
This video has a nugget of information that was immensely helpful to me. I am making star ship model that is white and your comments about the opalescent paint job on the Protector, got me thinking. So I applied some panel masks to a few colors and piped them into the specular channels. It worked like a charm! Looks awesome. Thank you! I makes me think that there are probably a thousand more tricks from the Ilm Model shop that would be equally useful in 3d. I would love it if at some point, you could dive into more of this kinda thing.
Fantastic info! I love the behind the scenes stuff. When Star Wars came out I already was a big Trek fan (and about 13yo) and wanted to get a job at ILM making space models. To this day I still play around with detail modeling and hope someday to build a piece to show off in my work area just for fun and the pearlescent paint trick blew my mind! Definitely will incorporate somehow if I ever get to that. Your quick touch on Space Cowboys reminded me again how much I'd love to hear you describe working on that show! Please do something about it some day!
Hey, Fon. The person who developed the specular highlighted paneling was Ron Gress when he painted the Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". I he told me about his work on "STTMP" during a break when I was a P.A. at Boss Films. Ron mentioned that he used damp tissue paper "stuck" to the model surface cut into the various panel shapes then dusted with a clear of a fine metallic color in one pass. Then added/repositoned them and made another pass in another colored metallic coat. He also briefly mentions this in one of the documentary series, "SOLAR CRISIS (1990) miniature effects" around the 4:45 mark. He was a very cool laid back kind of a guy and was fun to work with.
Adam, did you know there was a Star Trek short story called “Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited” where the original actors, while filming an episode, were transported into a parallel universe where Star Trek was real? They had to pretend they were their characters. Sound familiar? Try to find it, it’s a very funny story and much like Galaxy Quest, which came decades later.
I like stargate, when they discover there is a government sanctioned tv show that produces episodes based on their missions and uses their names. They are told the program is in case information is leaked from a mission it will just be viewed as superfans exaggerating fan fiction, and if the program ever goes public they will already be familiar preventing mass panic. @@swskitso Yeah, the show gets called "Wormhole X-Treme" because the network thought having an 'x' in the title would help boost ratings. IIRC it was a kind of joke to mark the 100th episode, and got brought back for the 200th.

Revisited" because it's a companion piece to an even earlier Trek story where Kirk, Spock & McCoy are accidentally transported onto the Paramount lot in the late 1960's. "Revisited" is what happens to the actors during that other story. Like "Mirror, Mirror", they swap places with their counterparts.
I would love some gathered documentation from oldskool modelers and fx people, so these amazing tricks & skills don't get lost as we try to digitally do everything. They aren't actually obsolete as they give a different feel, allow for different filming techniques, and mix with digital tricks so well.

I loved Space Cowboys. Which models? The shuttle? The Russian death satellite? I just so enjoy hearing about the effort that goes into making the movies more real!
I miss the miniatures and models, too. They have a much more 'real' feel to them than the CGI replacements. I wish there was more of a mix with them in current and future films.
Miniatures and models have a certain weight and screen presence to them that most CGI simply cannot mimic properly yet. I think a lot of it has to do with some of the things Adam and Fon touched on in this video, specifically the slight imperfections that only a physically constructed and hand painted model would have that make it feel more real than the mathematically perfect renders of a computer. Even when an artist goes in to a CG model to "rough it up" with little imperfections, those are still rendered with perfect mathematical precision that looks unnatural. Another thing I've noticed that really delineates physical models from CG is the lighting. CG lighting is often perfectly uniform with precise reflection and refraction whereas real life lighting is never that precisely uniform. Real life light, even sunlight, is never that precise - there is always some degree of variance and gradient to real lighting that affects how the photons reflect and refract on a physical surface. Whether it be dirt or smudges on the lens of the lightbox or clouds of dust in the air or a bulb filament/diode that is emitting imperfectly balanced light, there will always be very subtle variations to the intensity of the light hitting a model that don't exist in CG, which renders light as a constant, even and uniform thing.
@@Dargonhuman that bugged me about the CGI in the first movie to have outer space shots that were 100% CGI. "The Last Starfighter". Things were too perfect, especially stuff like engine exhausts.
@@PWingert1966 At least not yet with current hardware and software. There could come a time when we can build robust enough hardware and program a complex enough simulation to do that, but that's still a long way down the line.

Today, I learned that ILM worked on Star Wars, Star Trek AND Galaxy Quest. I'm happy 😊
I can realy see the love those two have for movie props and making techniques, its so hearthwarming. It was very interesting to see this perspective - those are details you do not notice mostly but you would notice if they were missing and they are so nicely and cleverly designed quite often.
Galaxy quest was well designed and is one of my favourite movies - I still wish it had real TV series - we have The Orville now I suppose at least but I love the Galaxy quest ship way more - its such simple yet beautiful design!
And a brilliant design which inverted the Enterprise. For those few who aren't aware, while the Enterprise had a disk-shaped primary hull and cylindrical secondary hull that held the nacelles, the Protector has a cylindrical primary pull and the two sweeping "wings" form part of a disk that holds the nacelles.
I LOVE hearing this conversations about such passionate and professional propmaking. Such a treat. Thanks for the channel, Adam!
Remember the tv show Riptide? There was a boat named the same. 20 years ago there were two guys who bought it and repair the boat in the slip next to my grandmother’s boat. It took them years and it was cool to watch them
This video has a nugget of information that was immensely helpful to me. I am making star ship model that is white and your comments about the opalescent paint job on the Protector, got me thinking. So I applied some panel masks to a few colors and piped them into the specular channels. It worked like a charm! Looks awesome. Thank you!
I makes me think that there are probably a thousand more tricks from the Ilm Model shop that would be equally useful in 3d. I would love it if at some point, you could dive into more of this kinda thing.
I will never get tired of learning about the production of Galaxy Quest. It's a perfect film.
Fantastic info! I love the behind the scenes stuff. When Star Wars came out I already was a big Trek fan (and about 13yo) and wanted to get a job at ILM making space models. To this day I still play around with detail modeling and hope someday to build a piece to show off in my work area just for fun and the pearlescent paint trick blew my mind! Definitely will incorporate somehow if I ever get to that.
Your quick touch on Space Cowboys reminded me again how much I'd love to hear you describe working on that show! Please do something about it some day!
Hey, Fon. The person who developed the specular highlighted paneling was Ron Gress when he painted the Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
I he told me about his work on "STTMP" during a break when I was a P.A. at Boss Films. Ron mentioned that he used damp tissue paper "stuck" to the model surface cut into the various panel shapes then dusted with a clear of a fine metallic color in one pass. Then added/repositoned them and made another pass in another colored metallic coat.
He also briefly mentions this in one of the documentary series, "SOLAR CRISIS (1990) miniature effects" around the 4:45 mark.
He was a very cool laid back kind of a guy and was fun to work with.

I just watched a documentary on Galaxy Quest the other day, found it on Amazon Prime, called "Never Surrender". Was quite good.
This movie is a masterpiece.

Adam, did you know there was a Star Trek short story called “Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited” where the original actors, while filming an episode, were transported into a parallel universe where Star Trek was real? They had to pretend they were their characters. Sound familiar? Try to find it, it’s a very funny story and much like Galaxy Quest, which came decades later.
Sounds like the exact opposite plot of John Scalzi's Redshirts.

I like stargate, when they discover there is a government sanctioned tv show that produces episodes based on their missions and uses their names.
They are told the program is in case information is leaked from a mission it will just be viewed as superfans exaggerating fan fiction, and if the program ever goes public they will already be familiar preventing mass panic.

@@swskitso Yeah, the show gets called "Wormhole X-Treme" because the network thought having an 'x' in the title would help boost ratings. IIRC it was a kind of joke to mark the 100th episode, and got brought back for the 200th.
@@beavismount It's called "... Revisited" because it's a companion piece to an even earlier Trek story where Kirk, Spock & McCoy are accidentally transported onto the Paramount lot in the late 1960's. "Revisited" is what happens to the actors during that other story. Like "Mirror, Mirror", they swap places with their counterparts.
Galaxy Quest is still my favourite sci fi movie, and im an all round sci fi fan haha

I would love some gathered documentation from oldskool modelers and fx people, so these amazing tricks & skills don't get lost as we try to digitally do everything. They aren't actually obsolete as they give a different feel, allow for different filming techniques, and mix with digital tricks so well.

So fun! I'm a model builder since the early 70s. Latest thing I built though was a Space Command (Marc Zicree) lego spaceship.
I miss the miniatures and models, too. They have a much more 'real' feel to them than the CGI replacements. I wish there was more of a mix with them in current and future films.
Miniatures and models have a certain weight and screen presence to them that most CGI simply cannot mimic properly yet. I think a lot of it has to do with some of the things Adam and Fon touched on in this video, specifically the slight imperfections that only a physically constructed and hand painted model would have that make it feel more real than the mathematically perfect renders of a computer. Even when an artist goes in to a CG model to "rough it up" with little imperfections, those are still rendered with perfect mathematical precision that looks unnatural.
Another thing I've noticed that really delineates physical models from CG is the lighting. CG lighting is often perfectly uniform with precise reflection and refraction whereas real life lighting is never that precisely uniform. Real life light, even sunlight, is never that precise - there is always some degree of variance and gradient to real lighting that affects how the photons reflect and refract on a physical surface. Whether it be dirt or smudges on the lens of the lightbox or clouds of dust in the air or a bulb filament/diode that is emitting imperfectly balanced light, there will always be very subtle variations to the intensity of the light hitting a model that don't exist in CG, which renders light as a constant, even and uniform thing.
@@Dargonhuman that bugged me about the CGI in the first movie to have outer space shots that were 100% CGI. "The Last Starfighter". Things were too perfect, especially stuff like engine exhausts.
@@Dargonhuman A friend of mine once put it you can't compute the complexity and randomness of reality.
@@PWingert1966 At least not yet with current hardware and software. There could come a time when we can build robust enough hardware and program a complex enough simulation to do that, but that's still a long way down the line.
