Congratulations on seeing it positively as a forced career change and not negatively as your career having been “derailed” (or some other defeatist phrase). With that attitude you will help make things work out for yourself as opportunities present themselves.
In my thirties I had to *change* from using computers to control manufacturing machinery when it all moved to Asia and go back to school on using them in business/finance. In my 50’s I sent myself to train on their use in The Cloud over the Internet. I reinvent myself as it reinvents itself.

When we were being downsized we had a meeting where an upper lever manager explained that jobs were going to be eliminated and people would become redundant and have to be moved around and he said "Let us know what you would like to do, what department would you want to work in. You will be a more valuable employee if you are working at something you want to do rather than being forced into an arbitrary position." I told this to my wife and she asked me the same questions and I told her that I'd like to work in the computer center so she typed up a very nice letter to the boss outlining my preference and I submitted it on a Wednesday and the manager talked to me on Thursday and I was working in the computer center the following Monday. He said I was the only one who even bothered to follow up on his request so he moved me to the new position immediately.

the mark rober squirrel obstacle course seemed less like reality tv than a lot of his other stuff. i saw it as more of an experiment in seeing what he could train squirrels to do, the narrative laid on top was just anthropomorphizing to make the characters relatable, and frankly a natural result of watching the same individuals for days on end.

Dang... Was catching up on some tested that I missed recently and found this video.
This was released on my birthday.
I can not tell you how much I needed to hear this and just how much this means to me. I turned 51 the day this was released, and over the passed few years, some questionable career choices followed by covid has hit me hard. I have worked as a concept and comic artist my whole career, but where I stand right now, you'd be forgiven for not realising that.
But given the dramatic change in the creative landscape and what that means for creators, I decided to go back to my roots and work on my own creative projects, as there has just never been a better time.
This of course comes with a huge amount of concern and fear, especially at my age, given my situation, and the numerous imposter syndrome type concerns we all have.
Your advice for 30 year old you... wow. It really set me in a truly positive mindset, as it applies as much to me at 51 as me at 31. yes, there is a "time for making mistakes" difference, of course... but that doesn't change the core message.
You, and the work you do have always been an inspiration, but this... this meant something else, just when I was desperate for something else.
So thank you for the work you've done and for being so thoughtful, honest and open on this channel. I am sure I am not the only one, nor will I be the last person, who your work and advice has both helped considerably and inspired.

The advice portion of the show was very good. I'm Adam's age and at thirty, you've got plenty of time. At thirty I got into management and spent a decade doing that... But even then... Decided I was better tempered and just happier building and worked my way "down". Naturally, I looked at income and how to preserve that, but I became more individual contributor than manager (as an independent).

As someone who's only about 3 months away from getting their Bachelor's degree, I think this is one of those points in life where many reasonable people ask themselves what the f**k they're doing and wondering if they've made a mistake. What job do you want to get when you leave? Where do you want to get it? Did you get the wrong degree to get there? While I know everything's gonna be just fine, there's always the part that makes you second guess all of your decisions.

Sure, try to be able to talk about other things as well. That's just social courtesy. No-one likes the people can't think outside a sphere of interest. But make sure that people know that if someone needs a matte painter or carpenter or whatever you do, your name should be the first they think of mentioning.

So true in most fields. When I was just an engineer I was just doing engineering stuff. I loved it. As the years went by I was moved up the ladder. Happens if you are a very good engineer with basic social skills. Anyway…..as this happened I was doing less and less engineering myself. Eventually I was doing almost none of it….plus having to manage a ton of intelligent, quirky….sometimes difficult people. I began to realize I really didn’t like what I was doing. I left…took a job as an engineer with less pay….but not drastically less because of my experience. I loved doing that last job…plus less managing of people. I did become a mentor to a few folks and that was the icing on that cake. Don’t forget the reasons you got into your fields in the first place. That is often your passion and that’s what makes it worthwhile.

The 2nd half of the video is actually real talk about life. Giving advice to people who's going through a career change or wants to work on something that's related to what they love to do.
Life can be unpredictable, if you don't have a path to follow. Whether it's the right or wrong path, you get to experience both and know what to do next along the way. There is no such rule about sticking to a job that is related to the degree you have. If you're very skilled with your hands and brain, don't be afraid to do something new and different.

An easy explanation on squirrel obstacles course "not saying 1 is better than the other" is more "this is valid and so is this". Adam would be more "squirrel 3 is the superior squirrel clearing 7 out of 13 objectives..." than "they cleared it!" Like he was

Adam, one thing I'm dead certain of is that if *you* were to film the construction and results of a squirrel obstacle course, you would manage to do it without peppering it with "LOL women, amirite?" jokes.

Life is a road of trial and error. If you stop driving then you'll never get to where you're supposed to be. There are going to be potholes, and bumps, and maybe a fender bender or two, but in the end the ride is beautiful and worth whatever it takes. It's a journey with no real destination, and that's alright. Really, it's not the destination that matters the most anyways, cuz that's hand crafted as you experience everything around you. It's the experiences, information, and skills you gained along the way, and how you used them, which got you where you are and will get you where you're going. Life is beautiful and enjoyable, but you can't just be "waiting to get there" because wherever there is, is defined by the road you chose to drive. You're the driver, and there are plenty of roads. You got this

It just hit me - the self promotion bump they always tack on at the end where he pitches being a Tested member or some item or merch.
It sounds exactly like PBS during a pledge drive.

The problem is not the fake narratives, after all fantasy is my absolute favorite genre. Everything from steam punk to high fantasy. The problem is that allot of reality TV advertise fake narratives as the hole truth and nothing but the truth.
