The bonus of Sicily is you can reap all his benefit's playing all parts of the ground.
1) He can play his usual role as the spare/intercept defender.
2) Can swing fwd & influence games with his elite marking/read of the footy.
3)Can play a hybrid midfielder role,patrolling half back & the centre square,delivering the footy fwd with his elite kicking.
Love this, Daz. I've got this feeling about Jasper Scaife. Can't help but think that he may just take any opportunity given to make a bold impression. Might not start round 1 but I can see a day where he starts as Full Forward, Sicily at Centre Half Forward with his beautiful kicking, Gunston on a Flank then rotate the smalls around them. At least for the first half of the season. Not sure that Chol will get much of a look unfortunately unless he puts in some big miles at training to fix some flaws (although he does bring great athleticism to the forward line). Will be extra excited if our midfield start popping more through as well!
In the last two years, Jai Newcombe is top five for the Hawks for 4th quarter goals! If another mid (hello Will) can jump on that bandwagon, my god I'll be excited!
Reports are Ramsden is killing it in preseason.
Yeah I struggle to trust some track watchers to be honest but I did like the shoutout he got from DH!
This may be a wild statement, but if Blake Hardwick plays as a majority forward for the season I can see him as an undersized lead up forward kicking 60+. Not ready to put my money where my mouth just yet, waiting to see if he'll actually play up forward this year which is also what they said last year, but heard he's been training primarily forward.
He has been & in match sim, played forward for 75%
@@daztalksfooty Great to hear! I think most teams will struggle to cover him as he is not a conventional 'Key Forward' but will definitely be a presence up there. P.S. I find it strange that he's a pretty rubbish field kick, but such a comfortable and clean kicker when going for goals.
I hear yah. A couple of questions though.
1. Rama seems to be training the house down.
2. Sicily himself says that he plays his best football at HBF.
3. Battles best return as a forward is 12. How many games for those 12 goals.
4. Scaife may not be ready yet, but if we get in dire straits, surely he can bring it down to Wiz, Ginny, Croc & Moorey.
5. Although enigmatic, Chol may have been underwhelming in the finals, but he is just as likely to kick some bags as well.
Finally, don't discount our old foxes. Gunners is looking his best for years and Bruiser is as reliable as a rock.
I'm afraid that I don't put much store into Lewis any more. It'll be a great day if he gets back, but as I constantly point out to WCE supporters over here in relation Yeo. The best ability is availability.

Agree with this take Daz. If Lewis keeps suffering his injury woes, I wouldn't be shocked if they try to lure Oscar Allen to the club next year. He'd be a great get! 👍

The score takes care of itself - a great book that talks about how a weakness can become an advantage in NFL. I know that sam will innovate just like he did with the defence, they were smaller but quicker and it fuelled our whole game. We had forwards running havoc in the midfield zipping around and tiring out opponents. now we can put in fresh legs from interchangeable backmen like sic / battle / weddle too. hawks players would not be surprised if ramsden plays on opening. I think Scaife is an option based on his dominance in VFL as a rookie. I am excited to see what sam does. not happy about dear being injured but he seems to be bulking up.
Serong was drafted as a forward and played a few games there before being converted into a defender. Do you think he might get another trial up forward?

great take. yes the goals record looked amazing last year but i can see a bit of sydney in the back end of 2024 about the hawks in 2025. goals coming on the back of corridor ball movement looks unstoppable until its not. teams and coaches find a way to shut down the corridor and when the hawks are forced to play a different way they may falter. great teams (such as brissy) can play and win in multiple ways and i think this video perfectly highlights why the hawks could struggle at that.
One thing that really impressed me last year was that the Hawks found a couple of different ways to move the ball. If there preferred method of handball then kick through the guts was thwarted, they were able to shift to a possession kicking brand and move the ball around the wings. They have great kicks in the side which makes it very hard to defend. The only way to stifle it is to ramp up the pressure as Port did in the final but few sides are able to sustain that for long periods during a long season.
Like the look of Jasper, what's his preseason form?
Jai Serong was drafted as a forward. So could be an option, and we don't know how long dear is out for but Dear is 100% the answer long term. Will win multiple Coleman medals.
As much as good the Hawthorn's 2024 season charge into the finals which was amazing after the 0-5 start they had. The only question is can they back up the momentum into this 2025 season. All the hype, all the theatrics, all the talent and more importantly wins.
Like to see josh Weddle permanent forward who knows where his ceiling is
I think it's a no brainer that Weddle gets up the ground more. I don't know about permanent forward as I feel like that may be wasting his abilities, but I could see him as a Forward/Wing (part time ruck aswell), in a Jeremey Cameron-esque roll but with more emphasis on the outside run and transition game.
I honestly have gone pass Mitch Lewis and I don’t care whenever he’s out the team or in because he’s not reliable with his injury’s and never has been.
I partially agree Daz but we did accelerate up the ladder without Mitch lewis. We had chol, part time Sicily and gunners trying to fit the role. I get all this. Reports state ramsden is having a ripper off season so I’m keen to see him fill that role. So, whilst lewis is out I am happy to see ramsden develop with gunners beside him. The mosquito fleet will always be present to crumb him.
IMO opinion I think our issue isn’t the forward line, I think it’s the midfield.
Big Frosty could be a cheeky option. Him and Sicily rotating could really throw defenders off
Frosty's only had one year of knowing how to be a defender, we can't confuse the poor guy 😂😂

I too am pessimistic on the Hawks as they're going into 2025 as a tempered team off the back of a momentum surfing 2024.
I feel that it's going to be a fairly different year for the Hawks in 2025 as the expectations are high and every loss will hold the weight of 2. Do I think they can win the premiership? No.
Will they contend? Sure! They will be hunted though and as clubs have the measure of them now, I do feel like it could very easily fall off as 2024 looking like a false dawn. I've had this concern for the Hawks fir quite some but I'm happy to be proven wrong by it.
Frankly. 2030 onwards is when I see the Hawks next premiership realistically possible.

Fellow Hawks supporter here Daz and I could not agree more with what you’ve said in this video. Hopefully the smalls can continue to get the job done but we are definitely needing a boost in our tall forward stocks. I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see how the season unfolds.
Daz, you are a bit of a downer. The hawks had eight players kick over 20 goals last season and only one of them is unaivailable at this point.
The hype is justified. Hawthorn are, once again, back in the thick of it.

We need to remember at Round 9 we were 500/1 to win the flag and went within a post of preliminary final.
Still think we are a midfielder & a major forward short.
I'd be going after JUH think he wants out of the kennel or with the possible retirements of Bruest and Gunstan I'd also look at Fritsh from Melbourne.
This is a lot of words to say not much. We aren't in Premiership contention but competitive again. With Battle and Barras we can release Hardwick up forward, Weddle can also pinch hit in the forward 50. So all the 5 players you mention kick 30+ and then add Wizz and Hardwick kicking 30 each that makes up another 60 goals. I also think the mids kick more goals this year. Jasper Scaife is a good size and height to come in and contribute and contest. If he goes well he might push Chol out of the side. If you listened to Sam being asked about Sis up forward next year and the game style he basically said they are going to take a close look at the Premiers and take some of their tactics. The Lions also rotate a lot of forwards and didn't rely on Danaher or the other talls. The trend is that you need more players contributing and rotating through the forward line and create mis matches against the opposition. I'm not as concerned about Chol or having a key tall. Well be competitive and everyone is getting better. Our real secret weapon is the even quality of our players.
Brisbane didn't rely on Joe? He single-handedly got them in front in the semi-final and kicked 57 goals for the year.
Kai Lohmann was their third leading goalkicker who kicked 36 while our #1 kicked 37.
We are going to need a standout #1 forward and I'll be happy to be wrong
@ Considering that Brody Mihocek was Collingwood's leading goalkicker in '23 with 47 it wouldn't be ridiculous to say that Chol (who's kicked 44 in a season) could be that 'standout #1 forward' for us. Not to mention the young fleet of smalls and Calsher who'll all be a year older and should only add to their totals from last year. I think that with how even the competition is at the moment we are as good a chance as anyone to win it.
However, I do believe it'll come down to our mindset and application rather than the talent that we have.
My bigger concern is opposing coaches will have had 5 months to analyse the game that took us from 16th to 6th. Though I believe Sam will continue to change to stay up with or hopefully ahead of the pack. Feeling pretty positive but the step up from 6th is going to be more difficult than many pundits think, and will need plenty of luck with injuries.

You will see that our game plan will alter (or already suits) a style where we will score from more ground balls inside 50 than any other side. The quick ball movement from players like Amon Impey Massimo Weddle Battle Sicily and Barass from the back half utilising our mids (who aren't scrubs) and it will come down to injuries and can we be mentally strong enough in the key big moments.

Felt so sorry for Mitch when waited to mark the ball, got knocked out and did his knee as fell to the ground. Hoping Chol can step up. Hardwick did alright up forward. You're right, need a big dominant forward to either mark or bring ball to ground. Hawks did move the ball far better into the fwd line which led to many goals later in the season. Also fast transition didn't let backlines set-up. Max may surprise as Calsher did, hope so, I'm going for 3 and 3 for the 1st 6 matches.
100% Daz. To be honest I have written off Lewis standing up to AFL football. I think we are going to miss Dear more than most people realise. He had a presence in the air but the ball was not dead when it hit the ground either.
A quality key forward looks like the only piece in the puzzle missing at the moment.
Two teams I have on top next year are GWS and Fremantle.

The Hawks are combating it by sending him a bit further up the ground. Not sure a sophomore slump is as big a thing in footy as it is in other sports
I would bet that James Sicily would average over 2goals/game if he played a full season at full forward. It just doesn't seem to be Sam Mitchells way though. He seems more content to rotate forwards an find favoyrable matchups.
I didn't find the list containing Fritch, Mihocheck, Stringer, Jetta and Gunston as compelling evidence that you need one big forward to have success.
They all kicked 40+ last year though was the overwhelming pattern.
@daztalksfooty I do understand the point, but when it is guys like the ones mentioned, I think their output is more of a consequence of what is happening up the ground more so than them being dominant because of who they are.
Did Gunston kick 40+ in 2015 because he played in a premiership team? Or was Hawthorn a premiership team in 2015 because Gunston kicked 40+? While I don't believe that it can be separated easily into that binary, I think that it is more of the former with the players mentioned (maybe not Stringer)
Of course we’d rather Lewis and Dear fit but as long as no more talls go down, we should be right. Mitchell and co will work something out. As long as we are 3-3 early at worst then look out with our athletic profile and overall endurance. Go hawks.
Great take. Personally the biggest issue I see with the Hawks is the fact that they have a fair few players in the 28+ age bracket who are currently carrying a huge load. They will find it hard to replace those players in a compromised draft especially if they’re finishing inside the 8. I do like what they’re doing but think they are jumping the gun a little on their rebuild. Going too early for Battle and Barrass. Happy to be proven wrong but with a harder draw compromised draft and not as lucky on the injury front, I think there are a few more hurdles the Hawks will need to jump through before pushing for a flag.
They wont replace the older guys by draft it will be trades next 5 years! They will sell the farm for harley reid ugal hagen was linked to hawks but signed but only 2 years so he will be a free agent in 2 years! Why would he not want a big contract if he wants to stay a dog for life! He hugged and laughed with hawks players after final loss and not 1 other dog did! He got hammered by media for his action! Leigh Mathews moved forward in the last few years of his playing career and kicked 200+ goals. Sicily is not in the same level as lethal and we aint playing 80's football but if he can get 2 goals a game we get damn close.
Daz, casting my mind back to the 2023 draft I can remember you were very hot on duursma. Knowing what you know now, if Watson and duurs were both on the board and it was hawthorns pick. Who would you want them to draft?
Well Watson duh based on output but I'm still high on Duursma. Kid's an athletic freak and an advantage for the Wiz was the Hawks were also good in the back end.
Interesting to see how Hawks go, I think they should be at the top but so many times I have watched coaches react to teams and come up with a solution and a team falls off next season.
Not sure you need a major forward for the game style we play? Its about accumlative goals not individual goals. Hawthorns number 1 in accumlative goals with a virtually unchanged forward line. There is an abundance of utility medium talls that could fill the void. Lewis will be back mid year.

Hawks are going to have a much harder go this time around. Much harder draw, no 7 matches against bottom teams like in 2024. Wont be surprised if you go 1-5.
Is it really a super hard first six? Carlton and Essendon are both closer to bottom four teams than top four. The other four are tough but all are winnable. Most games will be competitive, that goea for nearly every team in the league.
If I had to put money on a win/loss after six rounds I would bet on 4/2

I genuinely believe hawks will not make finals this is not because I am a port fan and we have a little rivalry we’ve seen when young teams in the past jump up and shock everyone and the next year fall of again and I believe this will happen and I think it will be super I say they will be top 8 all year but just fall out in the last round due to a loss to the lions at the Gabba

Most Hawks fans would be THRILLED to make the 8. We had a much easier draw last year, and breaking into the 8 would essentially rubber stamp the strategy as the team goes from mostly 22 to largely 23
Im quite confident Sicily can average two plus goals a game. He reads the play beautifully and has an almighty powerful set of paws. I doubt too many defenders would relish playing on him.

Even if you aren't a fan of JT which is your right, to suggest he's trash is just objectively untrue. Dude averages 27.4 points per game in the 2020's, is an NBA champion, has the most playoff points in NBA history at his age, 8.2 rebounds & 4.8 assists.
Spida has none of those accolades, JT is an underrated defender, bigger, stronger, averaging more points, rebounds, assists and blocks this season at a better field goal percentage.
Mobley's a generational defensive big who figured out how to unlock his offensive capability. Scarily good
