Having a third party dictate how a club can train and prepare the players it pays a fortune to doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Other than say a 4 to 5 week official annual leave period, the clubs should have full control over their players/employees and train them the way they consider will get the best out of them, which will be dictated by sports science. The AFLPA has been given far too much power.
I agree but the aflpa legit has zero power when it comes to suspensions. They have power in terms of contracts and stuff but aboslutely nothing for any in game changes
I’ve honestly grown up hating port and the Cornes brothers with a passion. But I honestly don’t mind Kane and his takes. He’s not a robot like a Luke Darcy or howey etc.
Some of the injuries can't really be blamed on lack of conditioning though. Yeo got his leg caught in a tackle, that's not gonna be avoided by training more.
Dam 20 hours a week total of mandated work in there contract. That’s crazy. Obviously they train a lot and play a lot out of that but still that’s nuts
There is no way with so much time off the fans are getting to see the best out of their team. No wonder that half the players in league can't kick accurately enough to spot a target. Like anything in life - practise makes per perfect. These days kicking a goal from outside 50 is major effort. It's hardly a professional sport with 20 plus weeks off. Cornes makes a valid point about players going on holidays and not even kicking a ball. It explains why the skills of so many players are very ordinary.
Kicking skills have fallen off because drafters prefer athletic capacity and running ability over kicking skills The modern take is kicking it close to where you want it is good enough Nothing to do with how much time they spend on the track
Players train in their 'holidays' to prepare for the official preseason training. If they return unfit and overweight they'll find themselves in trouble and struggling to keep up.
Credit where credit is due - spot on Kane. Another 4 weeks of conditioning & strength training at the club would make a huge difference. A 5-6 week consecutive break should be plenty. AFLPA controlled by the highest earners to the detriment of the 80,% of the other players. This and the free agency garbage.
I call them athletes, rather than footballers a lot of them. But surely they're doing they're running every day exercising, working on their skills etcetera on they're extended holidays.
The players getting rest from training, is NOT the reason they are getting injured! 😆 That's an idiotic take. It's the sheer kms players put in their bodies these days wearing them down. Kane comparing AFL training to a tennis player! 🤣😂🤣
As a North supporter I would hope the players are taking it upon themselves to take a couple of weeks off and get back to it earlier. The pressure is going to be put on them more now than ever...
The AFLPA is way too powerful. There has to be something that can be done to reduce their influence or remove them altogether. They are so terrible for the game and a key driver of most the AFL’s problems.
@ the game functioned fine for over 100 years without the AFLPA. There are countless professional sporting leagues that don’t have PA’s or PA’s with the extreme power the AFLPA has. There is massive imbalance in power dynamic between them and the AFL which is not present in really any other code in the world.

Disagree with kane a lot, but not this time. Players get waaay too much time off. But the question that should also be asked is, why does it seem to affect some players more than others? Is it genetic? Is it what the less affected players are doing in their free time? Is it a result of the soft cap not going back to pre-covid levels? The AFL and ALFPA need to work together to figure out what can be done to improve the situation.
That's true hey. Completely different. I get what he's saying but it's apples and oranges a bit. Only thing I'll say is they do get paid a fuck load like any professional sportsperson
4-6 hours a day 6 days a week should be training, 1 - 2 months max off every year. If you want a dream job, then you need to work hard to hold on to it.
You obviously don't exercise regularly And you have very little understanding of recovery, let alone performance prep You can't train directly the day after playing, nor the one before And definitely not the day of playing Which leaves the four days that most clubs are training for Hard physical training for more rhan 60 minutes at a time also does strange things to cortisol build-up... What a piss take Injuries happen in every single sport in pre season in the world, we play a physical contact sport with the highest speeds and the fittest players have ever been, these injuries are bound to occur not every athlete has the same body
Yes but no. These players aren't doing as much as they could be doing for their bodies in the off season, like Kane said some players go on holidays or post about whatever else except training, then pre season comes and they get injuries because their bodies weren't ready for the physicality.
It’s a different game than it’s ever been, with the running demands so much more apparent than ever. So things to consider . Different sports but still interesting In the off-season, Kobe Bryant his routine was to train six hours a day, six days a week for six months out of the year to maximize his strength and endurance. Averages 67/81 games over his career. LeBron's commitment to fitness is nothing short of legendary. His off-season routine is a six-day-a-week odyssey of physical and mental challenges Averages 70/81 games per season Steph Curry typically trains for about 2-4 hours per day during the offseason. His workouts include on-court skill development sessions as well as off-court strength and conditioning work to maintain his physical fitness throughout the year. Average 62/81 per season Different game I know but all of these guys have longevity . Each person in sport has different loads they have to maintain to stay fit. Joel Embid has played half and been injured for half of his career. Injuries occur in every sport. Avoiding or reducing them is the biggest battle of them all.
Overall the players are getting ripped off by the AFL, so as part of their pay negotiations they are entitled to proper rest and recovery, even shorter seasons and game time. Overall they are asked to do too much for too little.
Why does Kane compare the game to everything that isn't anything like afl. Compare it to nfl only thing close to the game. Those players also never take time off and are constantly training
