Ford said they only carried the Mororcraft reman, said they couldn't even get new for my 6.2. Were they misinformed? I got the Motorcraft!
The one listed on Amazon said it didn’t fit my 2016 F250 6.2
😂
Very helpful video, watched it 2 years ago and it helped me yesterday when it died at my local post office. 2 hours to remove the starter, walked it 1/4 mile down the road to a local rebuilder, he rebuilt it in 30 minutes, then I reinstalled it in less than 30 minutes. Thanks for all the great tips!
Thanks for the very helpful video. Some other observations I made during my 6 hours swear fest were- 1. 2 3" extensions rather than 1 6" worked better for me on the top bolt. The 2 3" extensions are about 1/2" shorter and let me back out the bolt almost all the way out of the hole before pinching the ratchet on the frame. 2. when working on the top bolt I found it easiest to have my body 90 degrees to the truck with my feet at the drivers side door. That allowed my hands to follow the curve of the starter easier to located the top bolt. 3. a 12 point socket is a lot easier to got on the top bolt to remove it. 4. If you are having a problem getting on the bolt, check for debris on top of the starter that might interfere with the socket. 5. Give each bolt hole a couple of short blasts of brake cleaner to help to remove any grit from the holes. 6. Make sure the neighborhood kids aren't around while you are replacing the starter. Good luck to all why try this.
The two 3” extensions instead of one 6” helped a lot with the 1/4 drive. 2017 F150.
I did the 2 3 inchers too. Worked better but had to use a wobble adapter too. Easily the worst starter iv ever tackled
I'm on day2 trying to change this starter on my buddy's f150, gots the 4.6 2v and the top bolts being a bitch to get at. And all the 3bolts are different on the starter 13mm the bottom, middle bolts gots a half inch and the top is a 10mm with no room to get a ratchet on even with 2
3"" extensions so idk what too do now ,, plus the exhaust manifolds on the way to go by the side
The single 6” extension worked for me. But idk how this feller had both hands up in the main area. I peeled my fender liner back until I could fold it behind the tire (didn’t try to do it gently, 17 yo truck who cares) then I snaked my left hand up there and over the frame palm up to guide socket to that top bolt. It seems impossible until all of the sudden you get it seated and then the bolt is out after 10 minutes of 5° turns. Now you think the worst is behind you until you’re holding the new starter trying to get the bolts threaded wtf
@@timharder9555I’ve done my Honda Crv, about to tackle the ford. I’ll let you know which is worse. At least you don’t have to remove the air cleaner, and coil pack.
I love the fact that Ford put the solenoid on the bottom instead of where it normally is. It really gets in the way of getting to that top bolt
Been watching your videos a lot lately. I'm a diesel tech of 15 years and I just wanted to say I have a lot of respect for you and your videos. Always professional and always informative.
Not sure how he makes it through them all without swearing. Unless it's all off camera lol.
This is honestly as good as a video on the notorious f150 starter can get. I have a 2012 Mustang and it's the same PITA with no space to fully torque anything. Really a ford thing. Thumbs up from me.
Just removed the old starter on my 2004 f150 3v. The top bolt can absolutely go to hell!
Thanks for the great video FTM
That third bolt is from hell.
trick that I did, when replacing my starter, (I placed a piece of electricity tape over the hole on the top hole on the new starter, stick the bolt through it, which holds the bolt in place put the starter in place, this really make reinstall the top bolt easy to install). it is a pain but be patient, also check the starter cable wire harness. I live in Canada my wire harness was very corroded. Great video really help me to tackle this job.
I can’t. My bolt/holes are pretty much the ground for the starter. I have an old school mechanical starter.
Very helpful video, it took me 3 hours to remove the top bolt, my hand was bleeding there is just not enough room just to give my advice remove the solenoid there are 2 Philips screws and the solenoid pulls right out, now you have more room for your hands but it is still not easy to get to the bolt. I also used a short flexhead ratchet fine tooth. Good luck
Did mine yesterday. I took off the passenger side wheel like others have done. I have big hands and have a real hard time getting them into that tight gap around the starter. Also if you position a light right you'll be able to see the bolt which helps a lot. It is a little extra work to take off the wheel and the plastic well sheild, but if you've never removed one before it might be worth it. You can get the bolt with a 6 inch extension and a wobbler or a similar arrangement depending on what you have for tools. I electrical tape the wobbler flex joint to stiffen it up so you can easily position it onto the bolt without it flopping around and you can actually see what you're doing. Once you get that one off it's easy if you have a decent selection of wrenches. Definetly wire brush your bolts well and use antiseize as well as recommended and you will find the reassembly will go much better. I put a generous amount of antiseize onto the bolt and turn them into the holes before reinstalling the starter to reduce the chance of misthreading the soft aluminum. I use nickel based antiseize which works really well on aluminum castings. If you think this project is really hard replace your exhaust manifolds first and it will seem much easier.
Yeah, when you replace the passenger side exhaust manifold and gasket you have to remove the starter to get the room needed to do the exhaust manifold job
heading out to the driveway today in michigan to change my starter in my '03 Ford. Thanks for posting this video! I have never done one before, and in the cold its not going to be easy... appreciate the information you gave.
I literally fumbled with all sorts of combinations of extensions untill I saw Brian’s video and I was like wow the most simple combo 6” plus a short socket damm should of known thanks for your video!
I don't even need to do this yet but I love watching your vidoes on the F150's. I have a 2004 and I am sure I will be doing some these sooner or later. I didn't attempt the spark plugs and let a professional do it. I do wish you lived near me in Florida though to diagnose a ticking noise under my truck. Love the videos. Keep em coming.
5.4 tick is usually cam phasors.
As usual, you make it look easy. I do not look forward to this on my '05 5.4
Great job 👏
I have the same year and engine except on a Expedition. Was it hard to do or does it take a good chuck of the day to get to?
@@claudrasberry8467 😂 lol
Its just shy of hell.but its possible.i think.
2006 F150 2hrs in, 4 bolts twisted off, 2 of them in the housing. I’m in the rust belt. Absolutely ridiculous engineering. I hate ford, hate!
Your video was very helpful and informative. I've never changed the starter before my life, and found myself in the unfortunate situation of having to learn. Your video made it manageable, thanks for uploading.
This was my first time watching one of your videos. I would say great job on providing incite and details regarding the tools, sizes and lengths that you recommend. Just an fyi for those here, my truck is a 2007 f150 5.4 motor. The little braided ground wire from the solenoid to the starter was rusted in half. Truck had turned over more slowly then normal several times over the summer but I didn't look into it at the time:(( Today it was 6 degrees outside and today is when the starter failed completely. No heated shop, no lift and no power tools. So not to bore anyone here is the best information that I have to share and it worked FANTASTIC.
I ended up using a much smaller ratchet than anyone noted on this thread that I have seen. I will try to include a pic but here is the long and short of it... pun intended... is the ratchet I used is five inches long overall with a swivel head. To that I connected a 2 7/8"
3/8" drive extension, a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter and a deep well 1/2 drive 12 point socket. Overall dimensions were 6 3/4" for the ratchet, extension, adapter and socket. Oh and the top bolt took me less than five minuets to remove. The short ratchet allowed me to get one half of a revolution on each motion. It was the first time I danced under my truck after I got the top bolt out. Thanks again for the video, you got me on the right track.
PS I tried to attach a pic without success. Sorry
100% the best tutorial for this on RUclips. Doing this job for a customer soon thanks!
Update: got it done in 2 hours, pretty easy with the right tools 👍
Thanks for putting up the video. Yours is one of the most well lit and clearest I could find. You made removing that 3rd bolt look easy. I had a helluva time trying to get my socket on it because I couldn't get two hands up there. My front steering linkage and trans cooling lines were in the way. I finally pulled out my digital inspection endoscope and that saved me.
I have this exact same problem. I had a steel plate that I also had to remove to get more access. I was finally able to snap a pic of the third bolt with my phone but need to find a combination of extensions that will allow me to get to that bolt. They definitely make it easy on the 5.4L engines!
Thanks much for your video. As with all your videos, well presented and right on the money. On my 2006 Ford LTD 5.4L, there was no way to get my hand up and over the starter motor for the top bolt. To solve the problem of access, I took off the wheel well shield and went in under the exhaust manifold from the top. I used a 9" extension on a 3/8ths inch with a swivel head connector. Just enough friction to break torque and just enough visibility to see the bolt . Cheers and Thanks Much.
This must be fake CG generated. No way you get under there and NOT come up with a few new words to ad to the urban dictionary.
Cg means computer generated so you're saying computer generated generated
I understand your frustration, the worst mobile call, especially when it was caked in mud and oil
You must don't know who this guy is..... best Ford mechanic on RUclips hands down. So this starter replacement is peanuts for him
A walk in the park Kizanski
Nicely done, bud! I've been following you for awhile now and you do great walk throughs and taught me a lot! Thank you sir, for what you do.
This is the Hardest easy repair ever...........Easy to understand....hard to do
Thank you so much!😂 I had the right tools but I kept missing that top bolt and can’t get it but seeing the angle you went from I think I can get it a lot easier now, mines a 2004 tho but same set up basically
I have a 1999 ford f150 4x4. Replaced my starter in 1 hour flat. Watched your video first made it alot easier. Thanks !!
Love your videos.
Spotted a broke off exhaust stud. My next project and next video you have. ✌👍
God bless your heart for this video.
You saved Christmas for my family with this one pal.
Just bought a 2012 F150 thursday from a ford dealership, friday morning in costco parking lot, truck would not start. Towing company tried to boost the battery only one click told me it was the starter. Nice to have a 3yr warranty!!!. Great video!!!
Thank you so much for making this guide! I was able to fix my 97 f-150 all by myself (and I have never replaced anything ever). You saved me a ton of money. Now my truck, Buddy, can go another 420,000 miles! Maybe..
Thank you so much, your one of the only ones who showed the step by step
i always watch your videos to learn from you on ford trucks, you explain everthing so easily, thanks
Makuloco to the rescue again! Thanks so much man, you really saved me some time. It still took me a couple of hours mainly because of having to take fatigue breaks. My starter failure on my 2012 Raptor was very unique. One of the solder points on the S terminal on the solonoid had broken loose you could move the terminal plate around and the starter would connect, even saw small arcing. Great video, second time I've used one of your walk through's. Leadframe the other! Really helpful channel
great video good photography and explained very well, if you get a cordless ratchet those bolts and nuts will come off quick, I have turned wrenches for 50 years and that cordless ratchet is one of the handiest tools i have come across especially on tear down THANX!
I always look for your videos when I need to work on my truck. Your were perfect with all of the information. Especially the need to have and use a 1/4 drive. Thank you.
Wow just got done replacing my 07 starter you make it look easy my friend and might I add awesome video
Just replaced mine. The hardest part was finding the right hand(s) position while flat on my back. If that top bolt wasn't so clean and free from rust from being tucked out of the elements (came out pretty easy once i locked onto it) it would have been MUCH more difficult. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Why does this job look so much easier in this video than the POS I'm working on? Does this truck not have a sway bar? Mine is no where near as "open" as this truck in the vid.. I literally can't even find the top bolt..one things for sure,if/when I get the top bolt out, it's never going back in. 2 bolts or set it on fire!!
You certainly do excellent videos. You do erk me in a way. I struggle to do the job and then you do it with an great camera view on top of that. Wow!
Spot on! Spot on! Save me arse! I don't have flex-head ratchets & it made the project lengthy & difficult. I did take off the RF tire to give me some more room. Top bolt was a beyotch but coming in from the passenger side helped a ton. My truck is an '07, so the cross-member on the frame made accessibility even tougher. But, thanks. There are several "F150 starter" videos on RUclips, but yours helped the most by far! Again, thanks!
I really appreciate your videos! I fixed my truck after watching one for the fuel inlet fault. Thank you!
Your video was a REAL HELP! Difficult job but your tip on using 6" extension was great! I ended up using a couple of shorter extensions together with a 13mm deep socket for the top bolt...it gave me about a 1/4" extra on what the 6" extension with a standard 13mm socket had... gave me a little better clearance past the end of the starter. Thankfully the hidden bolts spun off easily once they were loose. Really helpful video - THANKS!!!
Hoping this helps me. Gotta tackle this bear of a job today. I looked at it... it made me sad. I've got large hands which isn't going to help. Hopefully I can get the starter out. Thanks for the informative video.
i just did my starter replacement on my ford F-150 and the videos was so helpful thank you.
Great video. My 03 occasionally wont start, sounds like starter, just a dead click sound. This video will help with my replacement, thanks
Shocked at how close the the exhaust and no heat shield. I never liked putting the starter at the bottom where it gets all kinds of road contact however that was before I had to replaced the starter in the wife's QX56. Nissan put the starer in the gallery under the manifold. Nice and clean if it hadn't developed dead spots. Had to removed the whole fuel system and manifold. No easy rides I guess.
Great video!
Same with Cadillac Northstar 32 valve Holy Ship what a pain in the butt
Thanks for mentioning the nut sizes and the tight area on top of the starter in your nice
info-clip. I have to do this on a neighbors 2007 F 150 and wanted take the right tools to
her 'two-mile-away-house'. Take care and try to stay out of trouble!
My husbands personal truck is down and he had to work on sunday. So, what is his woman for other than to make his life easier. This video made it possible for me to crawl my ass underneath and remove it for him. Thank you!
Wow. ♡♡♡♡♡
Sure
If its true - Your an amazing woman. 👍👍- mad respect
YOU'RE A GOOD WIFE.HE WON'T FORGET THAT!
Crazy !! What a lucky guy.
I love your videos man, I just love them! You're one of the best if not the best out there.
Thanks for this you helped me with my 2010 f150. That top bolt is rough took a good 40 minutes to remove with hardly any room to turn the wrench, the rest wasn't so bad took another 40 min for the rest. Thanks
Hello, how did you get that top one out?
@@jeorginadaniels9259 just feel around for the bolt and then put a small wrench in there and go super slow if it's too tight get extensions and get a swivel in between the extension once you feel around for the boat it's pretty easy to get out there's just not a lot of room to turn the wrench till you just have to be patient and just turn only two clicks at a time with your wrench
Thank you for the video! I've convinced my husband to let me try my hand at changing the starter on his F150. (The fact that it's Sunday probably has a lot to do with it lol). Whatever! Wish me luck guys 🙂
The video was very helpful. I almost took the truck to a shop to let them install a starter I purchased. 97 Expedition, 4x4 with a 4.6. The truck has oversized tires so I was able to crawl under it easily. As soon as I broke the battery cable lug to the solenoid, I was committed! ;) Probably the last warm day in Michigan until next April. It took some effort but I got the two bolts loose. I couldn't find the top bolt. After using a mirror to see up there, I noticed the bolt was missing. I will probably pick one up the next time I am at a parts yard.
Thank you for your video. It saved me and made the job so much easier. I appreciate how you let us know exactly what ratchet extensions are best and how to reach the bolts. I was able to replace the starter myself. I am a handy person, with home repair, but not a mechanic. I was able to replace the starter on why f-150 with not too much difficulty. Using the 3/8 inch to break the bolts loose and then using the 1/4 inch to finish the job was a great suggestion. Thank you or the simple and realistic video. I have not subscribed to your page for future repairs!!
I have to do one of these this weekend. Looks like a piece of cake. I've done much harder starters before, this one you can actually see.
Great video. Just had to replace the starter on my ‘08 f150 that had 180k on it. Died on my wife this Friday in the pickup line at my kid’s school. Took me an hour and a half in 25 degree weather. I only used my 1/4 drive wrenches. My 3/8 extensions and wrench heads were too big. My 3rd dead of winter parking lot swap. Hopefully my last.
Video still helping people in 2022. Someone else helped me by not installing the 3rd bolt... Never would have found out where to feel and find out l was even missing a bolt.
Thank you bro. I just watched you're vid. And my roommates 98 ford f250 is working. I'm a Chef by trade. And it's so rewarding being able to fix something when you dont know how. Beer time!!!
Great video, l have changed many on the many fords I have owned. I didn't know if I could get starter out of such tight area until I seen your video. Im use to the old ones like me lol. Thankyou.
Nice work.I got all my training from him! Hes the best Ford Tech
Thank you! Most annoying yet satisfying DIY I ever experienced! For the 3rd bolt. I extended my ratchet about 14” or so toward the front past the mounts to get it off and back on.
Great video! Changed my dads stater on his 2007 f150 in about an hour. Very tight fit for sure but patience was the key. Thanks again!
Great Video, lol The setting reminds me of working on my Cars in the Dorm parking lot in the Military. lol
1,333,071 views suggesting people searching for the professional's method of doing the job. And then some think they need to tell you how to do the job differently or better. Makes me laugh. Great camera work and description Brian. And thanks for all the other Ford videos as well.
Great job on this truck.I wish i had it that easy when i Changed a starter on a pre-2003 Crown Vic it was a total pain.
I94SOUTH Not sure if I have had to.
This video was so helpful to us we changed our own starter. Thank you so much for sharing great video.
Excellent video, thank you for the help. Top bolt was not that bad. Thank goodness you can at least feel it (if you cant see it). Be careful not to get your hands stuck, if you do don't panic and hurt yourself!
Oh man I just got my hand stuck and did start to panic a bit. I used my other hand to tuck my fingers and got them out. Took a break after that..
There isn’t a better video out period. 💪🏽
I change the starter on my 2004 Ford F150 it took 45 minutes to take off the top bolt
It is a great video, and I don't know why it's got thumbs down but whatever. Only thing that is kinda wrong depending.. using the factory nuts. If the new solenoid terminal post happens to be Zinc and you put a copper nut on it or vice versa, Now you have electrolysis occuring and it will be green and crusty in no time. At the shop we see remans come with copper/brass posts with zinc nuts all the time. Haha I think they want them to fail.
So what's your suggestion to this? Don't use the factory nuts? Or use the factory nuts on the new starter with the brass/copper posts? Wasn't sure what you were trying to clarify
Just changed mine with the help of your video. Once again thank you.
I've changed many starters, I'm old and don't want to fool with it! When it's cold out the rotor spins without engaging on the first try. Second it fires right up. Good video.
You have an excellent temperament for this plus dexterous hands and fingers. I would be cursing from Brooklyn to Kalamazoo
I'm in process of removing a 2 yr old starter to get to exhaust manifold bolts. I think the tranny shop that rebuilt the transmission tightened the starter bolts too tight. I'm actually making up curse words (note scene from 'A Christmas Story' when the dad is in the basement).
I know this is an old vid but i referred to it prior to my swap. Great job btw, very helpful. Removing wasnt as bad as anticipated and was able to do it without removing the wheel like some other guys did. All about the right combo of extensions and a mini cheater pipe
Good Job! And thanks for taking the time to explain step by step how to deal with a tiny space lol! 😎
Just wondering why they don’t use a stud with a nut and lock washer for the top seems it would line up hold it in place while you start the other two bolts and I’m thinking that it would be easier to start a nut than trying to find a hole you can’t see
It's nice that your truck is so high off the ground! Great access. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. It's VERY helpful!
Thank you for this one. I only have experience changing starters on 96 and older ford's. I was surprised to see they don't have a hood over the starter gear.
Very well demonstrated including camera work!!!...thanks for the up load.....
Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video it was very helpful.
This is the best one by far. Thanks dude.
Very helpful video. For reinstalling, I had a very hard time until I realized that the rear of the starter (opposite from the gear on the front) has to go in high, while the front with the gear stays lower. Once I did that, I was able to slide the starter back in place easily before bolting it up.
Li
I don't mean to be a PITA but I ask all the aftermarket stores to test the NEW starter before I go through the trouble of putting it in. I've had new ones bad right out of the box. Most stores will mumble a little but do it. Great video!
One of the clearest videos in a tuff area I have ever seen . Good job. Do you have one on shimming a starter?
Ford starters do not need shimmed. 1st gen small block Chevys get the same shims you removed. If loud then add a little.
Good Afternoon, I really appreciate the videos you put out for us to learn. You are by far the most professional working fords. I have a 2015 F150 with an intermittent start, cranks like the battery is low or the starter is dragging but usually starts. When it does start everything on the instrument panel has reset, like the battery was removed. Thoughts?
Did you figure out the problem? Mine does this also and the battery is less than a year old and never been ran dead
Holy cow that last screw kicked my butt. My extensions were too long or too short. But this video helped me a lot. I appreciate it! Also I got the truck to start but right after it starts there’s a whistle noise. Best way I can explain it is if you ever driven a diesel truck and you’re on the highway it makes that whistle noise. It makes that noise right after it starts up. Idk if I should be concerned or not?
Thank you this was a great video you didn't skip any steps really helped mo
I feel your pain. I had to change the starter on my 02 Explorer a couple of years ago. I had it parked on an uneven section of grass when mine went out. So I had to first level my truck before I could jack it up to get to the starter. And because it was sitting on the grass, I didn't feel comfortable getting underneath it. So I had to take the front left wheel off as well as well as the splash guard. Even then I was only able to reach one arm in to work on it. Also a good tip is not to over tighten the bolts on the terminals. I torqued down too much and ended up breaking the posts on the solenoid.
+Joshua Luther Good Tip! Yes that is why I use a 1/4" ratchet to avoid breaking those terminals off.
Thanks for the video. Out of all the videos yours was the most helpful. Your awesome bro
Just did mine on my '14. What a pain in the you know what. I said words I haven't said in years. I only bled once, but got quite a few scratches. I think I'll write a letter to Ford this week and let them know what I think of this design.
Thanks for the video though.
Cleanest hands I ever seen on a mechanic.
Yup, we were on a tour across Americas helping others in need, so this was the first stop of the day.
Good video thank you 👍🏼
If anybody is curious this works for a 2016 f150 as well.
I was curious thank you!
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. I REPLACED IT ON MY OWN.That one bolt was a pain i basically did it with out even being able to see it. 👍👍
Being on the ground I finally gave up on getting enough clearance to work from the end of the starter to get to the top 2 bolts. I installed the bottom bolt and got it snug enough to hold the starter in place, then the middle bolt same and loosened the bottom, then I assembled about 3' of extensions with a bunch of wobble near the business end and shot through the notch in the engine mount. Used a 1/2" 12 point with a blue towel to hold the bolt and managed to get that in. Then I could run the torque wrench from the front. I've just had the motor out though so nothing's on the front and no compressor in the way
Using a stubby 1/4" & 3/8 ratchet helps a lot concerning the swing radius. Great video!
Great video didn't realize how simple this is.
You think?
Every video I seen for the starter replacement looks a lot easier than mine I have a 2010 f150 and the manifold is in my way can't get third bolt can't see it and can't get my hands to feel it guess I have to remove the manifold....but thank you for the video and as always your videos are on point
Don't watch this laying down my brain thought I was laying under that starter when it fell. Over here jumping out of bed lol
Thank you !
I got it !
Used a new aftermarket starter .
Thank goodness I don’t have thick hands .
Red green would just sawzall the cab off of the frame then it would be super easy lol...
Now remember if woman don't find you handsome, they should atleast find you handy
I managed to tap mine with a hammer and get one last start to get home today. Doing this tomorrow, Thankyou for the walk though.
Thanks for the advice on the extensions for getting the bolts out. That was much appreciated. Great instructions.
Nice job, your hired. I need the same job, but the back bolt is giving my brother a problem. I'll show him how to do it with this. Much thanks.
Bro had me laughing when he said Awww for some reason this one “just fell “ out .. I guess beating it with a hammer had nothing to do with it 😂.. like always thanks for making great videos they help a lot !
