  • Today I'm sharing how to spray paint your bathroom fixtures and faucet. Rustoleum is great for spray painting metal. You can spray paint bathroom fixtures to avoid replacing them for a little while longer while bringing some life back to your bathroom. I also shared how to replace your shower handle and bathtub overflow plate.

    With the exception of the drain, I would have taken everything off and painted it outside the home. In my mind that would be way easier than hanging all of that plastic and dealing with the paint solvents. You can also buy new trim plates and shower nozzles for not too much money. Anything that's really hard to take out, I would leave in and paint! This was very interesting and quite useful. I applaud your safety efforts as well!

    This was a great video. And yes you can take off the fixtures to spray them somewhere else but with older fixtures you want to be careful with that because you could end up having to replace a fixture. One suggestion I have is that they sell pretty cheaply the Rust-Oleum Economy Spray Grip Accessory which makes it easier for you to apply paint spray coatings. You can get more expensive ones too. Your hands don’t get so tired and they do a great job. They sell them at all the home-improvement stores. They make a big difference.

      It's holding up surprisingly well! I'm extremely pleased and plan on doing the same thing to our other shower when I get to that bathroom. I think this will last for years, depending on how hard the kids are on it. I might have to do a touch up after a couple years but so far it's still like the day I finished it. Good luck to you!

  • @LinMoore
    @LinMoore 2 года назад +8

    I would think it would have been so much faster and easier to remove the hardware (it's actually easy) to paint elsewhere than to painstakingly mask off and then tarp around everything. Also, were you able to spray paint the shower head without getting any paint onto the ceiling?
    Your bathtub looks great! I'm going to go watch that video right now to see how you did it!

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 года назад +2

      Thank you! It probably would've been easier to remove everything but in all honesty I just didn't want to and wasn't really comfortable removing everything (plumbing and electrical makes me nervous, I haven't attempted much of either yet). There was a tiny bit of overspray above the shower head but I hadn't finished the walls or ceiling yet at that point so I wasn't worried about it. If they had been finished already I would've taken the plastic up higher which I probably should've mentioned in this video.

  • @DavidSmith-fr1uz
    @DavidSmith-fr1uz Год назад

    It is really not that difficult to remove the hardware and will result in a better and longer lasting job. It's even easier to do even if you have only a little acquaintance with plumbing. Even so, it looks like you did a good job and I congratulate you on your effort.

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  Год назад

      Thank you, I'm so glad to hear from someone that's tackled this project themselves! I use 50/50 vinegar water to do most of my household cleaning and it works really well on my painted bathtub and fixtures. I just use a sponge (not a scruffy- sided one, just a soft one) with the vinegar water and it's worked to clean it most of the time. If I have a stubborn spot I'll use a bleach cleaner but I've only had to do that a couple times when I let it go too long. It's actually been easier to clean than my original tub surface was.

      I would love to see the outcome! The easiest way would be to message them to me on Instagram @theniftynester . I also have an email address but I'm horrible about checking it, Cherie@theniftynester.com , if you sent it there let me know so I can make sure to check it. I haven't had any rust on mine, sorry I don't know why you're having that problem. Did your original tub have a rust issue? Sometimes rust bleeds through. Also could it be from the bottom of one of your toiletries in the shower, like how shaving cream sometimes causes rust rings? The only other thing I can think of is that it could possibly be rust coming from your water lines or shower head? Let me know if you figure out what's causing it, I'm going to look in to it as well and see if anyone else has had that happen. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to seeing your results!

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 года назад +4

      I thought about doing the curtain rod but decided to just buy a new one. You could definitely spray paint it but my concern was that the curtain rings would rub the paint away over time as the curtain is pulled back and forth across it.

    How is the texture in the bath after the marine paint? Is it smooth or does it have a grit like texture? Would you recommend it for a sink as well?

    • @TheNiftyNester
      @TheNiftyNester  2 года назад

      The texture is smooth, it's almost like a hard shell. There's no added texture but some of the original texture on the bottom of the tub is still there. I might use the grip additive just on the bottom next time so it's not as smooth as it is. And yes, you can use this on any tub/ tile/ sink.

      Thank you! I plan on doing an update in the future. As far a removing the fixtures, I definitely could've but this isn't meant to be a permanent renovation, more like a mini reno to get us by a couple years until I can come back and gut the entire bathroom. So with that in mind I wanted to create as little work as possible for myself. Taping everything off seemed like a quicker way to do this.

      Thank you so much! I'm sorry to hear yours is peeling. That's no fun. I would scrape off what you can and then sand the rest down. Sorry your paint peeled. I am curious what paint you originally used? I really want to only do this renovation once. I would be sad if my paint peeled after so much work. I have reviewed a bunch of bathtub/surround videos that used the made for resurfacing kits. One showed a comparison of 4 different kits made for this. I was surprised to see that they all scratched pretty easily down the road. I was turned off to use them as they were so expensive. Thanks.

      My granddaughter did her tub with the paint I used and hers is still in good shape. I think you should try it. Make sure to clean tub super good and let dry. Get sandpaper and sand entire tub and clean out. Next step is to paint. Give it a couple days to completely dry. My tub had to be done. It just wasn’t because I didn’t like the color. The porcelain on the tub started coming off and got down to the rusty base of the tub. I think you should try it.

    Offering profuse apologies here.
    However, from the age + condition of this house, it might be a really great idea to reno your actual, permanent ventilation in there. Bump it way up, and be sure to vent it out the roof, not the walls, or other funky things people have done w older, tract homes.
