As a professional painter who has applied many different coatings , I commend you on your video. Great instruction of prep and use of product. You were not happy with your finish product and you found a way to improve it. I use Rustoleum appliance epoxy in the maintenance field on a weekly basis. It is very durable and easy to use and cost effective compared to 2k products.
Doing this now, learned from Home Depot paint guy that this can be tinted. I got mine tinted gray to go with my white cabinets. I’m excited to see the finished product…
Informative, honest and full of diy instructions. Well done and thank you for sharing. Definitely going this route for my ugly 70s brown bathroom countertop.
Oh! I’m so glad I saw this. I’ve read your blog and possibly pinned your posts for a couple of years, but somehow didn’t know you had RUclips.videos! Thanks for the great instruction and inspiration.
I have used the spray can trigger handle for other paint jobs and it does work better than just your finger on the nozzle. Also, I have been researching epoxy products for countertops and they all say to use a butane torch or heat gun to remove those bumps, crackles, bubbles other people have been seeing. After applying the epoxy you torch it and the heat smoots out the imperfections from the chemical reactions happening underneath. Just thought this info might help someone in the future...and of course check the label on the appliance epoxy before doing this.
What shes talking about is not bubbles or anything left from the application. THE FOAM ROLLERS ACTUALLY COME APART AND LEAVE PIECES OF THE FOAM, OR MATERIAL, ON THE SURFACE. This DOES NOT need a heat gun at all. I just finished my tub and surround and the epoxy dissolved one 4 inch foam roller and another 4 inch microfiber type roller. The rollers just fall apart!!! Heat wont help with this product.
I just finished resurfacing my old fiberglass tub and surround. FIRST MISTAKE I MADE....THIS IS HUGE ..... DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT USE FOAM OR ANY OTHER FOAM LIKE ROLLER! The epoxy literally ATE THRU the expensive Lowes 4 in roller I started with, and it ATE the regular white foam roller. I started seeing pieces of the material in my epoxy. I was SOOOO upset. I had to waste my first paint kit by using a regular paint roller for my first coat. SO UPSETTING! I had purchased two KITS from Amazon. I also purchased a spray can of the product. So...24 hours later I went to walmart....bought another spray can. I dont recommend the spray can IF YOU WANT A SHINEY FINISH bc the spray can Rustoleum Tub and Tile leaves more of a matte finish. I sprayed two cans of spray paint for coat 2 and 3. I had bought a new smooth finish roller that had regular roller material at Walmart. After the spray paint was dry....I sucked it up.... and opened kit #2 and I realized I had wasted time and money on the spray can application. WASTE!!! The moment I started rolling on kit #2 with the 4 inch NORMAL PAINT ROLLER MATERIAL.....the project came to life!!! I didnt even need to use the entire kit. I forgot to mention that after the 1st EPIC FAIL, I had to go thru with a sanding block and remove the bumps and lumps left by the expensive Lowes 4inch rollers that were foam and foam like. Then I used a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust before applying coat 2 and 3. So....if you feel or see lumps and bumps after your first application.....dont freak out like I did ... it's a simple fix! I will say that the spray can helped get a closer application to the edges, but honestly DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THE SPRAY!!! If you are just resurfacing your tub ONLY .... I'm guessing one kit will be enough. But, if you are tackling a tub and surround.... buy the double kit on Amazon for like $52. I'd probably buy two anyway....just incase you are like me and run into any problems .... you'll have a Plan B!!! I love the new look of my old yellowish tub!! I'd love to post pics but I dont know how to on here!!! Rustoleum lists the products you will need for this diy on top of the box its packaged in. DONT USE FOAM!!!!
You're comparing a kit (which reviews on several home improvement stores sites have extremely bad reviews) to appliance epoxy paint. Those kits are expensive as the appliance epoxy paint is cheaper and easier to use. If you want to keep it longer put a protective coating over it. These You Tube people do all sorts of things to temporarily fix things, but never consider how to make them last longer. Appliance paint should last years if you treat your house like you care about it.
Strange, I have done many many epoxy projects (countertops, sinks, tubs etc) with foam rollers and none of them, I mean zero ever fell apart. You either had a batch of bad rollers or something caustic got into your epoxy. Believe it or not I even used used foam rollers over again the next day for a 2nd coat that I sealed up.
Thank you for the video. I just did my kitchen countertops with the black appliance paint . Krylon. Send it down a lot with 120 grit sandpaper on a orbital sander. Cleaned it with acetone and then painted it. It is absolutely beautiful and has no sort of bubbles or fish eyes or dust or anything like that It looks amazing. Thank you
Well now I don't know how I'm going to do my sinks. I definitely don't want to mess with the overspray as I'm going to be doing one update at a time and the bubbles from the roll on is disappointing so I'm going to keep researching until I can figure it out. Thank you for sharing this. I saved myself a lot of time and $ and disappointment.
It has been almost a year, and it has held up really well! I'm super pleased! And this bathroom is the hall bathroom that gets daily use by my kids and guests.
I used the black rustoleum appliance epoxy in a sink and it's holding up pretty good..I used a foam roller and had no problems whatsoever... Im.about to use it on my shower surround and contemplating Rustoleum spray marble ..not sure if the 2 paints will be compatible???
If the finish is a little dull after a few coats you can use cut and polish (same as is used on your car) to shine it up... but you must give the paint a day or two to fully cure first 👍👍👍
Good choice to use the countertop roller… I sprayed mine and it is all over the floors and anything that you don’t have taped off or covered 100% including things outside your door… Second tip 100% make sure there is no dust on your countertops..I thought I got it all but apparently I did not… You live and you learn… Sometimes the hard way LOL good luck yours will probably turn out great
You included so many helpful tips in this video that I haven't heard from the other multiple videos I've watched on this product. Thank you! I bought the spray, but now I'm wondering if I should just go with brushing it on. I don't want to have too much left over.
Dont use foam rollers use a 1/4 nap 4" roller befor applying clean roller nap with tape to take any loose particles then apply 2 thin coats and 3 coat should be more then the first 2 coats to give it that smooth shine
It really depends, but I did not like the bumpy texture the foam roller left. If you put the epoxy on very tick with the brush, the brush strokes seam to settle out evenly and aren't as noticeable. The spray gives you the smoothest finish, but the overspray is beyond bad.
A mask like the one used here would protect against aerosol particles, but would not protect against fumes at all. Epoxy fumes are damaging to the nervous system. To protect against fumes, you would need a respirator that uses organic vapor cartridges. These organic vapor cartridges have a layer of activated charcoal to absorb the vapors generated by the epoxy.
Thanks for your great video! My vanity top has small dent. Do I need to fill the dent first? Or this product can fill the small dent and make it smoother. Thanks!
I got the paint can and brushes for my counter and it left a bunch of paint brush marks. You can see all the lines from the brush. Is that why you switched to the spray can??
I used the spray yesterday, yes its extremely strong, had my window open but still could barely breathe, my eyes got irritated as well. Any advice with the drying periods? it said I could use mi appliance after 6 hours, I waited the entire night but this morning when I used the countertop and opened the water tap some water bubbles formed under the paint and now it looks all wrinkled, I also get the idea I could easily peel the coats of paint of (though I dont want to try). How many more days should I wait before opening my water taps and using the bathroom again?
After you apply an epoxy you need to go the through with heat. Fire or heat gun so it make the bubble air disappear. Its not the brush the problem you just forgot one step
After the my third coating I notice some bubbles and cracking. Do I need to wait 24 for it to dry and sand it down? Or is there another way to do this?
