This is a video on how to fix a bmw x3 actuator gear.
Awesome. The swivel / universal joint did the trick. I managed to do it thanks to your video.
Glad to help
Nice job. Can get a carbon fibre gear made in UK for £6.99 with lifetime guarantee. Saves a fortune from main dealer repair. Good work.
installed X3 works just fine!thank you for the video
no prob, glad to have helped
Stupid part has to be made out of plastic? I got real lucky was able to do it on the lift and it took about an hour not a bad job. Thank you guys so much for posting this video
Thank you for posting this video! It was a big help
Instead of trying to pray out the metal cover with flat head screwdriver I found it easier to insert an Allen key with short end into the opening where the spline goes and push it out no damage no bending of cover
Hi, I’ve had the motor changed, but my 4x4 light is still on and the car is like “jumping” when driving along.
It’s like all the wheels are out of sync?
Hello! Thanks for your video. Very clear. I only have one question: where did you buy the new piece? Thanks again
There on ebay for around 100 dollars
Most of them are around $10. Why are people paying $100?
Great video guythatmakesvideps, thanks much! I have the trifecta of lights on. But I never hear a clicking noise coming from the actuator motor when the engine is turned off. And I've listened many times. Could this still be a bad gear? How can I be sure it's the motor/gear before ripping the whole thing apart? How would I know if I still have 4wd? Thanks!
Yes this could still be a bad gear. One way to see if the 4wd doesn't work, will require 2 people, 1 person to spin the tires with the gas pedal of the car and the other to watch the tires front and back spin which can be performed on the ground or raised on jack stands.
Thank you for the response but I don't understand it completely. It can be performed on the ground? Then how will the tires spin if they're on the ground? And is there a manual way to put it in and out of 4WD? Thanks!
Yes on the ground if there's ice or snow. Not that I know of.
I have a 2007 bmw 328xi i had the same problem i changed the transfer case motor and the problem was fixed but 2 days later the problem returned. What should i do?
same here on a 07 X3
Gear swap was done. How do you get the lights to reset? My mechanic tried using the snap on computer but no luck.
I have replaced my worn Gear Box Transfer Case Servo Actuator Motor with a new gear. The problem is gone. However, after driving for some time the 4x4 and abs lights come on (except for brake as in before) and the fan of the engine starts to cool it even though engine temperature is fine. There is no cracling sound when I turn off the engine as it did before replacement. What could still be the issue?
I changed out my actuator and my lights are still on. Any idea of how to clear them?
I was told I had a faulty transfer case servo motor and the error codes were 5461 and 5F3A and the charge was going to be $2500 do I really need to do this
Thanks. This saves me a lot of money. Bought the required tools and Just completed the replacement of the subject gear and all the warning lights are gone. How about the other pair of Gear on the transfer case? Mine has a very thin crack. Is there a replacement for this?
z k
Did you have other driving symptoms other than the warning lights?
Hi, my 2005 X3 2.5L has the 4x4, EML and ABS light come up when i accelerate too much, at around 3000 RPM and more. I had an estimated bill of 2000$ at BMW. I took the gear out myself and it has tiny signs of worn out. I’ll put in the new gear that I bought on amazon today for 20$ and will let you know if it fixed the problem.
did it work?
not 2000 dollars but 3000 euros thank's for this video
Can I unscrew the entire cross-bar? I’m confused, yours look all the way loose, but u said u only loosened one side
You can loosen the cross-bar but you don't have to remove it in order to take out the actuator.
Do you have to jack upp the car or rather does the wheels have to be in the air? I have a grease pit in my garage so i just have to drive it in and still be able to stand straight under it.
No, should be good to reach it from your grease pit.
Changed gear..worked for 2 weeks...Problem came back so I just bought a new servo motor actuator...Lights still on! WTF!?!?
Just wondering how that gear was so chewed up?? Did something seize up causing the grinding in 2 spots??
+Erwin Delarmente the gear is cheap to start with and when the gear gets its engage its turning a metal gear which makes it wear over time. As well using the button inside the car to turn the plastic gear does''t help because it can miss line it.
guythatmakesvideo ok thanks again.
Hi I have a bmx X3 2005 i already remove the small retaining circlip, and the washer, now i tryed several times to rotate out the gear assembly, but doesn't come out !!! , is like inside there is a something that retain the gear assembly (the white plastic and gear) i tried with everything with a screwdriver, an Allen key, but nothing !! maybe there is a bolt ? or something ? someone has the same problem ? any help to how to rotate out, will be appreciated,
kelvin baltazar how is it now?
hi. what are the tools I need, my E83 has no lights on but it does the tick tick tick..
Watch the whole video, it says what you need ;)
Would anyone know of a shop/person around Toronto (Canada) who would be willing to install this?
Also is this a common repair for the X3?? I'm looking into getting a 2013 X3 xdrive28i.... Thanks for your info
+Erwin Delarmente yes its pretty common and the part (gear) is made cheap. Just make sure to look closely at what your buying and read the reviews on the 2013 x3, how well there are rated and if there's any parts bound to fail.
guythatmakesvideo ok thanks for the warning lol...
Erwin Delarmente
buy a Lexus. BMW have too many issues at very low miles and it gets worse as they get above 80K.
Sir Sweetness ok thanks
sir sweetness, which lexus? RX? they drive like crap, vague handling and lame power. I agree on reliability but the RX is a horrible driver. I test drove a brand new one and walked away wondering how anyone would buy one after driving it.
Were the light on constantly or did they turn on and off?
At first turn on and off, then they were on constantly.
Someone must have flipped the gear at one point in time, that is why there are two parts of the gear that is stripped. Normally only one side get stripped.
my BMW X3 2004 every now then have the ABS, brakes, 4x4 and tyre pressure lights come on same time then it makes clunking noise in the back. when you turn the engine off it goes away then it comes back on again
Nice !
Hey man they told me that I have change the transfer case which cost about $1000 with the labor cost. are they being fair. do I really have to get it fixed?
If you have a BMW X3 or x5 most likely it's not the transfer case and its this gear. You shouldn't be paying to replace the whole transfer case, you should just be paying to pay for the little carbon fiber gear which cost 100 bucks or less that you can find on eBay or Amazon.
+guythatmakesvideo
nah its a 2007 328xi, he said i have to change the transfer case cause i have the 4x4, brake and ABS light and have to put transmission oil which will cost about $1300 thanks for the reply
+Shekh A Islam
should i take it to a different person and one more thing how much do you think it'll cost to change two shock absorber
Sounds like the exact same problem I had, so just change the plastic gear.
Most likely you will have to take it to someone else cause bmw will not just change the gear for you and two shock absorber would probably cost under 600.
Now what happens when you take it apart and the plastic gear looks brand new?
Are the 4x4 lights on and do you not have 4wd anymore ?
i bought the part from amazon for 10$.Does the aftermarket piece work properly?
If it's the right gear, yes it should work properly
How much to fix mine
$100 for the part??? I got mine for $11 on amazon 👍🏼😉
What did you type in to find it?
i thought the same thing when he said $100 lol
abs light scanning delete hard problem
How I wish I can do this on my own🙆🏽♂️ but because it’s BMW I’ve been told that I will break it even worse
Just buy the stupid actuator wheel from ebay! Buy aluminum or brass wheel, install it and BE DONE with this type of shit for life! I got an aluminum one for $29 off ebay and since I installed it it works like a charm. Thank me later
What did you type in on ebay? I have a x3 2007 3.0L
Amazon 20$
why would you pay $100 for one? I bought mine for 17 bucks
Where did you find it? And what did you search?
