I watched this video as a guide to take my drive apart. It would not go forward or reverse and I figured that I might as well try because it's totally screwed at this point. Well I have not found anything wrong inside. I was hoping that I had a loose valve like you did but both of mine were tight. I have not taken them apart to see if there is anything wrong but from what I see they are fine. My drive has the polished areas from the piston blocks and like yours I can't feel any grooves. Right now I'm at a loss as to why my drive wasn't working.
Great trips for another’s hack job trying to fix something and actually making it worse. Would have been hard to catch the problem caused by another inability to rebuild this unit without this video!
Mr. DoubleWide6, thank you for this excellent brake down and repair. Learned so much that I have the confidence to repair my failed Troy-Bult 50" Zero Turn. I'm hoping the repair is as simple as a loose check valve, but, if additional parts are needed, I appreciate the sharing of your part source. I have invested far too much in this old ZT mower. To have the transmission go was a huge let down. Discovering your RUclips channel has breathed new life into my project with the hope that a DIY repair can be done for short money and not a $1500+ new transmission. BTW, where did you obtain the repair manual and exploded views of the assembly?
How many of these have you worked on to achieve your level of competence, expertise and easy manner? When parts begin falling out of something, my heart rate goes up accordingly, when springs jump everywhere, I get nauseated. You make it look easy - which I'm sure it is not. Great job and THANKS!!! PS: Since you had unit taken apart, surprised you didn't go ahead and replace the power input shaft bearing (6203 bearing) unless they never wear out. Comments?
Nice to see you got it fixed. I have a Bad Boy identical and can’t figure out an issue I’m having trying to engage the blades, the pro clutch engages but the engine bogs down and dies. I have to try 3-4 times and feather the clutch off and on real quick to keep the motor running until I can finally get the blades turning. After that it runs fine.
I never did figure out the cause but it has got better over time. Right before my problem started I had pulley go bad so I replaced it. In the process I cleaned and repacked all the spindle bearings and greased them really GOOD. I'm wondering if I overdid it with the grease and the added weight in the spindles was causing the problem. I can engage the blades now and don't seem to have the problem with it killing the engine.
I didn't find this video until I put the unit back together and on the mower. The problem I had came back. Those valves will be the issue because that's the only thing I didn't check. Time to do it again.

Great job, Bob. It looks scary, but if you take your time, keep track of all the bits and kibbles and have a schematic to use as a guide it's easy enough and at $800 per side new, definitely worth the time to fix it yourself. Did you have to buy any new parts? It looks like you were able to save everything and just repair that valve. Bad Boys are pretty popular in my area, too. Thanks, Bud!!
Watched your video and it was very informative but the camera did not pickup how the by pass pin goes on the center section for install. Could you inform me how the pin goes on the center section?
Doublewide6, just a quick question I have a Ariens Sport Zoom 1232 zero turn riding mower using the Hydro Gear transmission mfg. 2003. I did the rebuild the right unit. All when well with the reassembly, but dummy me left off the internal "Oil filter" cover. I made the discovery after it was all together. I did the process to purge the air out after a couple of cycles it still will not pressurize to turn the wheel shaft.. My question leaving off the internal oil filter cover cause it not to purge out the air in the casing?? Appreciate your comments. Thanks,
I have this exact mower with a 60" deck. The transaxle is leaking bad. Now the left axle is surging on a grade. Maybe air in the system? I will rebuild both this winter.
Thanks for the video it is very helpful. I have a question, the service manual and parts manual indicates the check valves are different item 24 and 25 and there’s not a part number for them. One of mine had a bad o-ring. I didn’t see or hear if you mentioned that they are different. If not different great but then where would I find a replacement valve or o-ring?
I don’t know if you check the comments on a post this old I hope so. I have a ZT 2800. It failed on one side. I took it apart and found the center section completely destroyed. The motor block springs broke into pieces and ruined center section. I replaced it and the piston blocks. Put it together and ran like a champ for 5 minutes now it does nothing what could I have done wrong?
Fantastic video! I have an Ariens XD 52 with hydros made by the same company. Unfortunately Ariens markets them as "maintenance free," and they don't have filters. I don't have the the cojones to crack the case like you did. But great job and I enjoyed the video.
interesting how it works. But cost wise, how much difference in this somewhat complex repair vs simple replacement? Also no lock tight on check valve nut? The loose nut was a manufacturing defect.
I enjoy watching your videos. When you were referring to the bypass, is that actually called the dump valve? I've been trying to get the Skag back to moving in the neutral position if you will. I finally found the correct brake adjustment rod after being sent the dump valve rod twice now. After I gave Skag the length of the rod it's finally on it way. I changed the oil in the hydro's and the filter and oil seemed as though they have not been changed since 2006. I had to take the old screwdriver for some extra leverage on one of them. Anyway, so when I was making sure there was no air in system I noticed the left side hydro kept moving when its supposed to be in the neutral position. I have not looked the reason behind it up yet.
My valve screw assembly is stripped. I have tried searching for a replacement and haven't had any luck. Do you have a part number or resource I can search.
Hey I got a new seal kit for ZT-2800 Hydro-gear trans and the seals in the charge pump now have 2 rubber rings but the new ones have 3 rings on the rubber. Do you know if its a design upgrade or have you heard anything or read it anywhere? I bought a kit because someone put the wrong o-ring in it and it leaks but it was working fine now after a new o-ring it barley moves at all on jacks stands I did notice you said to be careful how you put the cap back on. If you have any knowledge on those O-rings/seals let me know. Thanks and BTW great video!!!
my left side does not move front or back, but when I lift it up off the ground, then it moves front and back, do you have any idea's what it could be? thanks
It bypass's the transaxxle preventing the tires spinning.... Located on the rear, L shaped rods with a safety clip....pull both bypass rods outward....if your facing your rear of mower, look down on both sides and they be right there kinda close to tires ......
I know im necroing this from a few years ago, but i got one of these for pretty much free and the one part I cant source is the stupid retainer cam stop for the brake lever shaft. I noticed you didnt have one on yours. i assume its to help support the aluminum on the cover. let me know what you do in that situation and have you ever had to makeshift that part. Thanks!
You seem to be pretty knowledgeable on these hydro gears, maybe you have an idea because I can’t get a good answer from anyone. I’ve got an Ariens Ikon 52, only 2 years old with 140 hours. When you’re driving straight ahead and then try to advance the left handle a little bit it will start jerking and not want to turn right?
Nice work, Bob. I have a question maybe you can answer. I had to replace the bypass rod seal and did it with the unit on the machine. No big deal. I put it back in like you showed, c-clip on and lever but now that unit does not work. So... my question is when you pull the bypass rod out, can that little piece that you held in with grease when you were putting it back together get lost? It's just weird that there's no pressure. TIA, Joe

Great job, very informative, thanks
Watched your video and it was very informative but the camera did not pickup how the by pass pin goes on the center section for install. Could you inform me how the pin goes on the center section?
excellent video! Thanks
Where'd u get the book? 25:30 Thanks.
how did you find the diagrams for the unit?
I'd look at Hydro-Gear's website.
Thanks,
Outstanding!! Yeah that's my fear is repairing one and it not work right.
Nicely done, mate.
Can u put the seal under ur fan on top with in in the mower?
I've got a zt2800 that the oil filter stud is stripped out bad. It can't be rethreaded. What would have to be done to replace the oil filter stud?
I have this exact mower with a 60" deck. The transaxle is leaking bad. Now the left axle is surging on a grade. Maybe air in the system? I will rebuild both this winter.
Best of luck with it
Great video.
Great video --Thanks
Father law has several of these units and likes them the best over all the other makes
Why siding you use some blue lock tight on check valves when reassembling them?
Hey I got a new seal kit for ZT-2800 Hydro-gear trans and the seals in the charge pump now have 2 rubber rings but the new ones have 3 rings on the rubber. Do you know if its a design upgrade or have you heard anything or read it anywhere? I bought a kit because someone put the wrong o-ring in it and it leaks but it was working fine now after a new o-ring it barley moves at all on jacks stands I did notice you said to be careful how you put the cap back on. If you have any knowledge on those O-rings/seals let me know. Thanks and BTW great video!!!
my left side does not move front or back, but when I lift it up off the ground, then it moves front and back, do you have any idea's what it could be? thanks
Nice job buddy
Great video, thanks for all the info
I'm hung up on the bypass pin. I can't see what it is or where it goes.
Thanks!
Is there any seal by the bypass arm?
well done and thanks
TIA, Joe
AMSOIL hydro oil for me. Thanks for the fix!
Hello. My hustler FASTRAK left drive started to get sketchy today... It feel like it's "sticking" at times.. And it doesnt want to glide back in forth easily like the other side. Any ideas??
Great video, good job!!! Couple questions: when you buy a new Center Section, it comes with new motor/ pump too?? Also, can you open and fix/ tighten those By-pass valves?? You don't have to replace them?? And one more: correct torque for the cover bolts??? Thanks a lot, youtheman=))
Apparently you need to sand down the motors on a very flat piece of glass.
