Maybe some day they could "save" baseball by addressing ridiculous blackout restrictions and tv deals that push people away from using extra effort or money needed to watch any baseball at all.

When I was a boy growing up in Boston in the 60s, the game was great. There was plenty of day baseball and day/night double headers. The season and World Series ended in early October, not November. Also, as a boy growing up, almost all the Red Sox games were televised on UHF, which could watch without paying for it. My parents were poor and could not afford to pay for me to watch baseball. I never went to a game, but I was able to watch the games on TV or hear it on the radio. Also, the World Series games were in the daytime. Young kids have a hard time watching baseball at night if they have to go to school or their parents can't afford cable. Baseball has gotten ridiculous with its overpriced tickets and cable viewing. When I was a boy, I and all my friends' first love was baseball. Now, it's a sport for the rich, privileged middle-aged men. If they want to save baseball, make the sport available for young boys. Also, when I was a boy, I played whifle ball, baseball, and softball with my friends on the streets or the park. My parents couldn't afford to let me play little league. I grew up following my beloved Red Sox and watched their games on TV or listened to them on the radio. I feel bad for kids growing in Yuppie Suburbia, where they can play sports on the streets. No wonder why kids have no interest in baseball. Greed is killing baseball. Make tickets affordable for families, and put baseball on regular tv.

I grew up in the same era and me and my friends played in the never maintained school yard field while the little league all played down the road in the well manicured field. Occasionally they'd try to chase us off the school field, but since we were the ones who maintained the field with our own lawn mowers that wasn't happening. They had to beat us if they wanted our field and we always stomped them mercilessly and sent them home in tears..lol Splintered wooden bats, gloves that were once our grandfathers and balls wrapped in tape..The bases were old chunks of plywood or whatever else was handy..and we never had uniforms..but all the best players in the neighborhood played with us and not the nepotists little league..

Flat footed outfielders should practice shoe string on the run catches and all in one throws as well. Other than that it was 8 men out for various reasons 🤣. Baseball, to me, it’s very different as a fan, from regular season to postseason. Regular season, it is a game made for radio. The slow pace and long season are made for story telling and really showcase the abilities of good radio broadcasters. As a fan, you listen all summer long and get to hear all kinds of interesting stories, including about the old days, from the color commentator. Post-season is a different beast.
Postseason baseball is great tv. The slow pace again becomes a feature, but instead of for storytelling, it’s for suspense. Some of the most memorable visuals in my sports-watching life are MLB pitchers staring in to get the sign, coming set, and summoning up their focus and energy to make the pitch, on a cold October night.
Is baseball slow paced? Yes. But so is golf. So what? It’s not for everyone. How long do cricket matches take? But they still have their devotees.
That’s just a little defense of the slower pace. I will say, the points for wanting to shorten the game are not invalid. MLB just needs to understand that suspense and story telling are part of their product too.

In 1998 every game wasn't televised, ever since the extra innings TV package and all games being televised became a thing in the early 2000's the length of games has gone up. In fact average times really began spiking after the 50's and the beginnings of televised baseball. Sure television its not the only factor, but when you remove the average times for un-televised games pre all games being televised, you get very little difference in the average length of games from the 90's to today. Now even in the 90's most games were televised but go back to the 80's and 70's when there were way less televised games and removed the non televised games from the average game time and you will see the time of play for those games in the 70's and 80's is very similar to today. Television and commercial breaks have been the biggest factor to the added average times for games over the last few decades. We went from just a handful of televised games in the 50's and 60's, to certain teams in the 70's and 80's having regional and national cable networks televise all of their home games, to having nearly all games televised by the late 90's and finally by the early 2000's every game being televised.

Pitchers greatest advantage is to mess up a batters timing either through skill (speed and type of pitch) and the pace delivery mannerisms with a touch of psychology.
Hitting is about fluidity of rhythm and repeated views (of the pitcher delivery). Long term this will benefit hitters who know how to make contact and remove the boring "slow pitch softball like" elements (launch angle/ shifts etc ) and shorten extraneous things like walk up music for batters that have been increasing into the game the past 30 years.
Any efforts to get the umpires away from determining games (no one goes to game to watch umps) and standardizing rule sets is better. I realize you still need umps for judgement calls but the strike - ball could easily be automated with laser technology. Most of these changes address the "piss or get off the pot" type delays that as a fan I detest when I am at a game in person. Anecdotally, it's good they made these changes after the mandated additional protective screening so those inattentive fans don't get killed or maimed by batted balls - LOL
Never could understand the stupidity of batters not learning better bat control and exploiting the shifts, but that is partially dependent on the quality of a pitcher. The biggest detriment will be to pitchers who cannot get into a physical groove and get out of their own head to simply challenge hitters. The clever ones (Scherzer, etc) have worked on how to keep the 'rhythm imbalance' tools in their delivery repertoire within the allotted time.
Overall the impact to pace of play is good what I'd like to see is opening up the gates an hour earlier so you can see home team go through batting practice if you want. Something the MLB took away from the fan experience a few decades ago and would alleviate whatever impact it is making to concession sales. I bring my own snacks and refuse to buy MLB merchandise as everything is overpriced.

Really feels like American sports are all about "highlights" rather than the actual sport, probably why Football (soccer) isn't as popular over there. These changes might well result in more hits and web gems but, they also subtract from any duels between batters and pitchers, and web gems are good because they're not as common, if you saw 3 a game they wouldn't be called "web-gems" it would just be fielding.
I dunno about the changes, seems overkill to me, I really like baseball, but American sports culture as a whole kinda makes me sick to my stomach

Baseball was America's Pastime from the 1890s through the 1970s, the glory years of the sport. And back then games were just over 2 hours, they didn't shift, batters didn't step out and adjust gloves after every pitch and the game featured base hits, hit and runs, stolen bases, squeeze plays and was not just a home run or strikeout contest. As a compromise I would like to see the 8th and 9th innings have progressively longer pitch times if the game is close, but overall I think these rules will bring back something closer to classic baseball.

The networks want more hours to serve more content per day. Baseball has always been a chess game and this is detrimental to that. Making these rules are the result of MLB changing the fundamentals of the game. Instead of teaching actual hitting and valuing high average hitters, they taught a type of baseball that wants hitters to use an uppercut swing to inflate home run totals. The steroid era skewed the view of MLB and what the fans wanted moving forward. Lastly the balk rule needs to be just that. I remember when Showalter first took over the Orioles, the shift was not only incredibly useful but it was fascinating to watch because it was so unique. I remember thinking how funny it was seeing the second baseman in right field. Then it became common practice. Then the shifts got even more pronounced. Then, before the end of the decade not even 8 years out it made the game entirely unwatchable (sure some might disagree but for me and most people I know they’d agree)

I've watched a few games already this year after not having watched regular season in probably ten years. So refreshing the amount of contact and action happening in the games. I don't understand the baseball purists who just want to see guys stand around all day long. You still get long games in this system, just only when there's a lot of offense prolonging innings -- not pitchers just taking forever to deliver the pitch.

    • @botboi4334

      @anon2you1966 Год назад

@@botboi4334 Between 1890 and 1980 the average games were along the lines of 2 1/2 hours long. If you go back and watch old games, the pitchers threw pitches on average in around 15 seconds, maybe 20 seconds if the count went deep or after a foul ball. And there were more complete games back then, so I don't think stamina was a problem. Also, batters did not step out nearly as often or for as long. There was no shift. There was more action in the form of hit and runs, bunts, stolen bases and more run scoring rallies, not just homeruns or strikeouts. I would think that type of "small ball" would help small market teams - you don't need the high priced hitters, just guys who can get base hits and know how to manufacture runs the old fashioned way.

I play softball and the only time we go past the game time is if your team is home and you get to hit last in the game and you didn’t do that yet meaning it’s the middle of the inning or if it’s a championship game and the game ends on a tie the team gets to play another inning and if it doesn’t end on a tie the team with most points win but if they keep ending an inning on a tie you basically play till one of the teams has more points at the end of the inning. One time it was a late game it started at 8 but it was a championship game so we had to get there 45 minutes early like every other game we ended the game at 9:50 pm so we were all tired and at the time we were a 10u team meaning we were 9 and 10 years old so we were pretty young we kept ending on a tie so we kept going and it ended on a third strike with bases loaded I remembered the count at the end that was a full count meaning the hitter had 2 strikes at 3 balls we were all praying that our pitcher would throw a strike and she did so we won the game by a single point so we were all happy but tired at the same time
