Between this and the Yankees ejection for a fan chirping, this opens a whole can of worms that some enterprising heckler is going to exploit. Someone is going to get paid by a team to either sit behind the road dugout at home games or get tickets behind the home dugout when the team goes on the road and start chirping the ump. Select games with certain umps but if we're ejecting guys because "I heard someone near the dugout say something" it's only a matter of time before you have operations to get managers, bench players, or coaches ejected in high leverage situations.

Same thing happened at a minor league game I was working. It’s the team High Point Rockers who you have done a breakdown about with “the throw out guy” who infamously threw out the umpire after the game was over. But basically the blue was messing up and one of the guys starting talking and the umpire ejected someone and went to ask who said it. The manager went out there and gave him his two cents. He thought that he was gonna get the umpire to stop but then he walked over to the dugout and asked: “who said it.” The pitching coach ended up wearing it in a moment way too similar to this.

    Two things:
1.) Props to that crew chief, who did a great job of sorting out the mess the home plate ump created. He was calm & decisive, like an official should be.
2.) Soccer has a pretty simple solution to this type of situation. The rulebook explicitly says that if a punishable offence is committed by anyone in a team's technical area, and the official cannot identify who it was, the penalty (ie. yellow or red card) is applied to the senior team official present in the technical area. Normally that's going to be the head coach/manager, but the wording of "senior team official" allows for situations where they aren't present for some reason and someone else is filling in. That makes it perfectly fine for the referee to not know who it was that yelled something; they can just discipline the coach and move on with the game, leaving that coach to get the players to shut up (or else).
I referee youth games, and this rule has extra importance, because league rules for youth safety say that a team MUST have an adult team official present in order to play, so if a team only has one coach (which is common) and they get a red card, then the game ends and that team forfeits. I was an assistant referee (linesman) for a game where that happened last fall. That was for the coach herself mouthing off, not this sort of bench penalty rule, but the result is the same.
