I found the atmosphere in div 1 far more unique and special than div 2. Division 2 has your typical post apocalyptic world with nature and vines growing everywhere, and the cracks in the pavement overrun with weeds. Whilst in Division 1 buildings aren't all uninhabitable and overgrown, they still look lived in (at most) and a little less cliche-apocalyptic *COUGH COUGH WoNY NEW YORK*. I agree with what you said about the Christmas decorations because they just add to the spookiness of it all. Think about it, what other games take place in that rarely explored time frame in winter only a few weeks into the virus. Also, in division 2 there are absolutely no living civilians on the streets (aside from gangs), but in Division 1 you still see people looking out of their windows and walking on the street. Hell, it even rewards you with small things for giving them things in return. Back to the buildings, it gave you hope that you could still save the old society before the outbreak + there were quite a few still living civilians.

Hmm I haven't ever played the first one but the second one I was hooked with the first line half hour and ha e been acting off and on when I can past 2 years . I got WONY. Expansion but the snow atotomosphre and still civilians might be a welcomed cha ce of scenery kinda wish they made an update where there were civilians still alive that can hide you from enemies in exchange for food / supplies

I agree. I love the feeling of Division 1 how surreal it all feels. That only weeks prior the world was normal, completely fine. It's amazing how they made a world that was so full of death feel so alive. I was hoping that with WONY they'd bring that feeling of surrealism back but it was a missed opportunity.
Division 2 is a great game but the atmosphere of its predecessor is so much better in just about every way. The cold gritty feeling of winter making time seem to slow to a halt in the city that never sleeps. My favorite place in the first game is Dark Zone 9 in the top left corner it's just a pile of bodies stacked higher than the first floor of some of the buildings only then do you realize just how brutal that virus was.
I love both games but the atmosphere really sold the first one for me.

Warlords of new York looks fine. This takes place a while after the first division. Things will be overgrown and ruined. And the game gets the vibe right. Next game they should totally do autumn or winter, but summer was epic too....

I'm a 67 year old gramma playing this game. I played Division 1 until 2 came out. I basically play alone or with 1 friend. I really prefer 2. All the things I can do in the open world alone is great. I have a very strong build but prefer to just play on hard alone. I enjoy just killing them easily. When playing with friend, we do a lot of heroic. I love the graphics of both games but enjoy DC mainly. I enjoy the summit. I've played some in dark zones but not as much as in 1. I've never played the raids. But I just enjoy 2 the best.
PS one reason for playing this game over other games, the controller has legacy where most games don't. I just cannot function on the others. Everything is backwards for me! Ugh

VERY missed opportunity by not including a survival mode for Division 2.
It was my favorite mode to play and they could have made it work for Division 2. They could instead have major hurricane force storms during this. Warnings to get to cover as debris would be flying around, and do serious damage or incap you if hit.
The temp and rain could be very cold, so this would require you to constantly have to change clothes to avoid hypothermia. Then again, they could have changing weather so you have to worry about it being too humid and hot, having a risk of hyperthermia (basically heat stroke). You would be forced to drink water to stay hydrated during this.
Honestly, they could have done this better around the "Warlords of New York" DLC. Having a survival back in New York during the summer would be a different experience, especially with different weather elements.
If they do make a Division 3, they BETTER have a survival mode.

Like picking up explosive rounds, incendiary, water for buff etc and using when the right situations calls to use them usually baking em for dark zone, the second game uses em immediately. The supers never get mentioned like super damage mitigation or double damage made for some insane plays in the dark zone. Really hope there's a div 3 that can mix the best parts from both games

The one thing I love about the division 2 are the many various builds you can create. As you can seriously specialize into what ever style of build you want to be. For example if you want to be a juggernaut with a m60 you can and still fight off the enemies. If you want to be a sniper with low health but high damage you can. And with either one if played right you can run entire missions on the hardest difficulty along with directives and survive and complete missions.

Like, I don't want to worry about paying rent, finding parking, taking care of kids, going to school, getting arrested for shooting up a mall or two, things like that are just too realistic. The fact that I'm a super-soldier running around in a post-apocalyptic universe has let me drop any pretenses that I'm participating in something realistic, especially after firing the 308th shot into an adult man's face, taking him down to 50% health. So I only started playing The Division earlier this year - think it was a freebie, then I bought The Division 2 on sale.
I enjoyed both games - the original definitely felt more difficult than the sequel - that's not to say it's a cakewalk (as I've played TD2 more, I've scaled up the difficulty a bit).
Don't get me wrong, running around Washington with a Cuelebre and a (I think it's called the Capacitor? Can't remember) is fun, I did like New York in TD1 slightly more - it felt more in your face, and those traps all over the place really spooked me all the time.
I hope that one day we see a Division sequel where they're back in a cold, close quarters environment - maybe further north, or a year after the Dollar Flu outbreak? Give me manhunts, summit (controversial view: as a solo player, I find it damn fun) and a good story in a cold environment and I think I'm sold.

Just finished the video! I agree almost completely with the way you compared these. Also, I’m glad I finally found someone who actually recognizes The Division 2 as not being “trash”. The only thing I’d personally disagree with is story. I prefer the way the second game handles the story. One of my gripes with the first game was how the story just abruptly ended with too many lose ends after too little time. I also thought it was dumb how the LMB were still the “scary bad guys”. Like seriously, their gear is on par with the JTF’s, AND we’ve taken their HQ + leadership. With the BTSU, they at least get their tech from the same place as the SHD. Anyway, great comparison!

I got into Division about a year or so late (traded an airsoft replica LMG for my PS4), but got pulled in by the story and spent alot of time grinding until West Side Pier opened up. I've played D2 since the beta, a first for me, with occasional breaks to play another title but I always come back. Actually playing while I watched this episode. I haven't been able to grind as heavily even with being unemployed most of 2019, and starting the new job right before an actual pandemic, but I'm still fan.
I love the exploration aspects of the open worlds, searching for intel and echoes, and though I'm mostly a solo agent I do team up now and then. Some aspects I miss from the first, but I like the improvements that set it apart. This series has so much to offer a player like me, I can't wait to see what Heartland has for us.

I felt the mix emotions of the recorded audios like how relax they were before it blows up and how scared they were during the 1st week after black friday happened; just like we were uncertain back then on how long this virus would eventually go. Fast forward to May 2021, I'm now playing The Division 2 up to this day. Comparing the 2, I like the idea that they include stories of ordinary people and how it affects them, which I think lacks in the sequel. On The Division 2, I then like that there are camps that slowly helps the community to recover.

The story and setting of TD1 is far better than TD2, the original story is literally what made it so popular in the first place. You just played TD2 first, which is why you like it better...which is fine...but the original story line is so much more realistic, gritty and had way better acting and voice acting. TD2 had crispier gameplay, that's it..

I played dv1 probably a bit to much, but I love that game. It was the only game I played. I loved every aspect of it, the pve, pvp, the world, and story. I sunk hours upon hours in playing when I should have been studying or sleeping but I'd kept playing. Then dv2 came out and I played through and got to max level. When I finished the game I felt like I wasted my time. I didn't feel rewarded for playing, I didn't feel like I got any enjoyment. Dv2 board me to the point I just walked away. I played dv1 solo 98% of the time and had emeance amounts of fun, but after I got past level 25 in dv2 I'd never get on unless the 1 friend I had that played dv2 got on. I just didn't care about dv2 the same way I cared about dv1. I gave dv2 another try soon before the first manhunt the took you to Manhattan I believe came out. I played for about 12 hours over 4 days and left to do other things. Dv2 has board me since day 1. I never had the eurge to grind for the overpowered gear the same way I did for dv1. Maybe it's nostalgia, but dv1 is my favorite of the 2 and it always will be.

personally, i do enjoy the combat styles of both games. Div1 is much more unforgiving, but also just clunky at times. It can really get tiring when you just unload mag after mag into the 50th elite rioter who just walks towards you. At least Hyenas try to flank. And yeah, recoil was a bitch in Div1 unless you spec'd into nullifying it into the ground.
But atmosphere and story goes to Div1. While i admire Div2 for what it had, Div1 was a lot more real imo. the whole "in the middle of the collapse" subgenre of post-apocalypse has never really been fully explored to me, so it felt interesting to know you have the backing of a government, but this place is still collapsing around you. And new york just felt a lot more colder to me (literally and metaphorically). the greys of Div1, in the menu, in the streets, make it seem much more depressing in this concrete jungle when you sit back and look at it. Div2 feels more action movie-y to me. It does get the whole vibe of midsummer july swelter across, but aside from the dark zones (which are really freaking cool in both games!), it just feels kinda meh. too much orange and yellow for my tastes. (WoNY was nice tho.)
yeah, builds were diversified in Div2. no more running Lexington for GE credits. (i still want a dedicated healer gearset tho)
and the dark zones are just sad in Div2. from an aesthetics point, they're SO COOL, absolutely covered in powder, the walls being caked with the stuff. but gameplay wise, you're more likely to get ganked from a 4 man squad than anything. Get the DZ materials and get out.
and i do wish there were better gamemodes besides missions. I do believe that missions improved from the first game to the second, but i still want a good gamemode, as summit just feels like a slog of level section after level section after level section with more shit piled on for you to manage. Underground felt unique every time, they were their own mini missions. And while i know Survival will never come back, it was really fun.

Playing legendary difficultly is better in D1. If you or your squad have good classified builds it’s a blast. Don’t have to sit in rooms throwing your skills at the enemy. Ever since gear 2.0, Massive has done everything they can to nerf the player! No more damage to elites attachments and protection from elites builds. The enemy AI hits harder and can take you down in 5 seconds regardless of level. A red bar shouldn’t shred Division agents. Then Massive removed majority of elites from higher difficulties to negate protection from elites builds. Also elites drop better gear so the developers are forcing players to grind over and over these missions.
I recently came back to D2 and played with the few remaining active clan members left in my clan. It took us 53 minutes to run DUA on legendary and that was with no deaths or wipes. I was healer but the rest of the team was skill damage builds. At one point I said “Anybody going to run D3 or Striker? Need some action here.” My clan members didn’t know what I was referring to and one said “I have a striker build but it’s not optimized.” 🤦‍♂️. These guys never played D1, so throughout the course of the mission I was saying “we need a firecrest build” or “wish the healing hive was as good as the support station.”

I think the developers missed out on the opportunity to open N.Y. City some more. The bridge, for example, could’ve been a gate to open-up the other part of the city with its own challenges. Dying Light had something like that. Once you found the key to open-up the other city to explore, it was really entertaining. Maybe once that got old, then make the Washington D.C. game- linking all games together where you wouldn’t loose your builds, but continue on into other chapters of the game.

Yeah the E3 of Division 1 teased somethings that never came to fruition, including an extension of NYC to brooklyn…
I recall the drone companion mobile app that basically has you hop on your friends session via smartphone app and play as a recon/support drone. There’s also the dynamic map where the map opens up similar to the echoes you find in the map, and Brooklyn was suppose to be an extension with it’s large dark zone but instead became a starter area ONLY and then no longer accessible after that..

I still think The Division 2's enviornments are grossly bloated. While The Division 1 didn't have as many activities it was much more freeing to explore without the gnawing and constant reminder of activities nearby or the game deciding it's been too quiet for too long and spawning random encounters.
So many people bitched about how little there was to do in the LZ that there's times in D2 where I feel like I don't get to just explore uninterrupted. The Division 1 had civilians milling about. Scavenging, hunting for what few supplies may of remained. They asked for help, they'd call from the windows. Some hated seeing you around, thinking you brought trouble, others would warn you of bad guys that were actually right up the street. The Division 2 to me doesn't feel more alive as much as it feels cartoonishly over encumbered by this need to keep the player busy.
The Division 2 could've done more with building up smaller settlements or communities around the city. Some side missions literally take place in areas where old settlements had tried to flourish. They could've had more rag tag civilians, unarmed or armed only with a pistol wandering about, digging through trash or old gardens. The initial reveal trailer made it seem like that'd be the case but more often than not it's just enemies over and over and over. The world just feels so...Stale.
Granted Div 1 had the same enemy spawns in many pre designated spots but it felt more immersive yeah. People living their lives. Rioters trying to rob and take advantage of others, the game just had more urgency to simply survive and come back stronger. Meanwhile the second game throws your original character out the window (Getting off initial topic) and the interactions that should be super intense had it been your OG agent come off as watered down and lackluster at best.
Personally I want 1, just with everything 2 has done to improve it and nothing taken out. Throw in heartlands ability to crouch and stealthily melee enemies and we have a winner.

After hitting max level, you only go there for the pvp and that's about it

I would disagree, I think the division 1 was practically perfect, that's why 7 years later there are still people who play it daily, so I'd say it lived up to its potential and ubisoft abandoned it because of the new wave of micro transaction based games. I've played 2 but I prefer 1 I downloaded both games again last night and I plan to spend some time playing both but if two just changed the atmosphere back to what 1 had, snowy, foggy, dark, sometimes stormy, and added in more civilians running around and more random events then 2 would be perfect. They just never recaptured the magic of the original game but they made some upgrades to 2 that 1 really should have gotten on its final update. I think if they remaster 1 and don't add micro transactions it'll be a game people play for another decade at least.

I’m a new player to the genre, about 4 months ago Mattpatt on Gametheory made a RUclips video about the division which welcomed me to the new world. I got the first one and LOVED it. I played the campaign solo for and beat it by myself. I’ll never forget going into the dark zone for the first time. I had the weakest level 30 gear and was no where near ready. I remember running away from any enemies I came across, being scared shitless, my palms being sweaty and my heart pounding in my chest. It was genuinely terrifying. And in my opinion, that’s a GOOD thing. It made me feel immersed into the world and the story, kept me on my toes, and made me feel a way about a game I’ve NEVER felt before. It was a whole new experience and I loved it. I eventually leveled up and got stronger, i can actually survive and fight no problem in the dark zone, but man it was so scary at first. It was amazing I’ll never forget my first time going into the DZ. The division 2, in my opinion, wasn’t as scary. Once I reached level 40 I got lucky and got the chameleon first thing. Which helped me drastically when going to the dark zone. I got merked by other players, but that was more frustrating than it was scary. I was just so outclassed gear wise there was nothing I could do. Which imo is my biggest problem with the game. As a new player you’re kinda screwed cause most people playing now have been playing for years and not only do they not want to play with new people, but they actively avoid playing with new people. They also take advantage of them and kill them repeatedly (basically bullying) to help themselves get manhunt and other things. It makes new people like me not want to play the game at all cause I just can’t compete. They need to fix the balance to make it easier for new people to get top gear quickly so they can actually play the game and fight other people instead of constantly getting killed and bats toy by everyone

My experience with Division 1: the game was challenging. I would build a really strong PVE character and find that Ubisoft nerfed the build I used only weeks later. This trend continued and i eventually quit playing it.
Over all it was a fun game.
Now I play Division 2. So far the game play feels a bit more balanced. I can’t say how the dark zone is. I’m still playing the first run on the story. My playing style is campaign and co-op.
I am not a strong PVP player.
So I’d give both games a high fun score for co-op. I hope a Division 3 will be out in the near future

My favourite thing about D2 is how when you capture a control point, NPCs will then go to scavenge for water food and components, and will sometimes have to compete with enemies to do so. They actually leave their base, go to an area to scavenge and return which also grants the control point resources.

    NGN i have a question off-topic from the Div1 VS Div2 debate:
Q: Do you think the Division franchise should have done like World of Warcraft, as one mega game with constant updates and expansions, instead of a Division 2, Division 3, Division 4 etc?
My question is inspired by my friend who plays WOW way back in 2018 when Division 2 was just announced. He questioned the viability of having multiple games in the first place, saying that this is all just to make us spend more money. Massive could have just revamped the movement and combat for Div 1 to Div 2 standards, combined both worlds into a Manhattan Chapter and Washington Chapter, made ALL the content from both sides accessible to all players (i.e. Incursions, Raids, Summit, Underground, Survival, Last Stand, all Legendary Missions and whatever that may come out in Heartland).
Previously, I just laughed it off, but now with Division 3 rumors being active now, I start to see my friend's point, that just releasing more games is just a cash cow to them at our monetary expense. What do you think, would it be possible?

The division 1 and division 2 are like an apple and an orange, they're both fruits, but are totally different altogether.
After several adjustments/patches to the game, here's my updated opinion:
    movement 1
    combat 2

    builds 2
    pvp 1
    darkzone 1
    endgame 2

I think you will love it in my opinion. Everything feels so much dire and much more depressingly desperate in the first game. And the atmosphere? Chef's Kiss on that one over Div 2. One of my favorite aspects of Div 1 is Rick Valassi and his radio podcast "Wouldn't You Know It?." Try and read the books and comic if you can. Collapse of New York(During the Div1. Can be used in conjunction with the game following the story of April Kelleher but, not necessary). Broken Dawn(during and following the events of Div1. Leading to and bridging the gap between the events of Div2.) Extremis Malis(Comic) Another bridge element between the 2 games. Supposedly another official novel is being written and coming soon. Dont remember the name of it but there is enough content to keep you good for a long while. There is also a "World of Tom Clancy's The Division Encyclopedia." As well as a Art book of the Division. I know I am missing some other stuff but that would be a great start if you so chose to delve into the story further. I am a story guy so I just cant help myself. Good luck, Agent.

What I love about div 1 is the feel but actually playing hours upon hours and still enjoying myself definitely div 2 (I did come back and play all the div 1 DLC content and still prefer div 2 content EXECEPT survival was KING)
Also to note I never cared about pvp I loved the idea of the DZ but even in div 1 I always thought pvp was never their focus just a cool lore addition that allowed pvp.

Im a super solo player. And d2 has a ton to chew on.
If d1 isnt super punishing and things to do, like side missions, i might give it a run.
Super good impression for 2 tho walking out and seeing so much life.
Seeing d1 as a dead city would be a nice addition to the palette.

Regarding combat, D2 has way more spongier bosses than D1, especially on Legendary and Heroic. But the biggest issue in D2 is survivability. In Legendary and Heroic, the player is way to frail. And if you are "lucky" to encounter some of those grenade spammers, it just gets way to frustrating.
I quit playing D2 a few months ago. It's just too repetitive, same missions, same recycled content. I only jump into Survival in D1 once in a while.

Would you recommend the game for a solo, never on a party, rather blow teammates with several grenade than being part of their strategies, kind of player like myself?

They really should have used some stronger visual filters and effects in D2 to convey the heat as apposed to how well the cold NYC winter came across.

The Division 2 endgame is way better I feel. With all the directives you can toggle it really makes it feel like more of a survival game too.

I played a fair amount of Division 1, but it got too iffy at some point and I enjoyed it less. Division 2 on the other hand, I played with much more, and still play now. So I guess I prefer Division 2...though it could use some improvements with solo playing..

Pvp and DZ are really broken and bad as you said. The main problem is that everybody's using meta builds, so you won't really see any build variety or whatsoever. Just went to the DZ today, inspected my gankers and all of them had either Famas or Lady Death meta builds...basically, going there with your unique shotgun or lmg build is suicide, not to mention that if you're not in a group or with a friend you'll have your butt spanked.

div 2 i played far more but i do miss that atmosphere 1 had
dark and empty robed of hope yet still here and there with the right music playing at right part i still felt hope and the power to fight
1 had a unique take in games on a Apocalypse where the government was still there fighting ever on with world outside still there if not in a great place but there

I do enjoy the storyline in the first Division game. It was a bit darker, we still didn't know what was going on. Although if you had to just buy one game, I'd go with 2 because you can play in both DC and New York with the expansion.

In the division 1 you could smash windows even make holes in concrete walls if you shoot enough at the same spot. I loved how you could shoot stuff and it would break. None of that in div 2. Maybe its just me but that disapointed me hard ruind my immersion. In div 2 everything is just static even car tiers.

To be honest I think division 1 is still the better game mainly because it has replayable content and what does division 2 have fk all except for the summit which I don't even play cause it's not worth it I've actually more or less quit playing division 2 and gone back to division 1. Love the video looking forward to the next one

I haven't played Div 2 in a year. I just hated the things they changed. I really feel like the could've updated the graphics, smoothed out the bugs and we would have had a great game.
The combat felt stiff and suffocating. I may pick it back up again because the same thing happened to me when I played Div 1. Hated it at first waited a year or two came back and loved it.
