Married with five kids. Full time job and I train 5️⃣ to 6️⃣ days a week. I’ve done so for two years walilah alhamd now but the key is consistency. I’m 43 btw. Oss
You nailed it with the recovery. I played football for 12 years at a fairly high level, so my mind knows all about hammering away during practice/workouts. The problem was I started BJJ a couple of years ago when I was 42. My mind wants to go every day, but my body thought I was crazy at the beginning. I’ve been up to 3 days for about a year, with the last few weeks getting a 4th class in. I’ve had to add a few extra stretching sessions and hot tub sits to recovery from this 4th class.
The key takeaway is to NOT STOP. I trained for 3 years in my 20s, but then I stopped. It took me 15 years to get back into it consistently. During those 15 years, I've tried 4 times to get back into it but each time I stopped after a couple of months. Finally started again when I was 45. Now 52 and I ain't stopping unless I'm physically not able to.
I'm a 45 year old purple belt coming back from a 6 year lay off. I train once a week due to my work schedule but I don't miss that Monday. I'm taking it easy and my job actually keeps me in shape. I'm a mail handler for the postal service and we do lots of pushing and pulling; I walk around 6-8 miles a shift, so I'm pretty active outside of the mats lol. I treat my job like a workout.
I train 3 maybe 4x a week and got my blue belt in 17 months. I’m 25 - 3 in competition and I have never been submitted in competition. My first 6 months, I trained 6 times a week except Sundays and my body was sore constantly and I got hurt all the time. I switched my training methodology, focused on having a game plan and using my attributes to my advantage. That’s has helped me better than training 6x a week.
Blue belt here. I train bjj 3x a week on my days off. But the downside is that they’re 3 days in consecutive with no rest in between. At 43 years old, my body is feeling the pain and aches. But I love bjj too much to complain and not go.
I'm 39 and I train 4-5 times a week. I train more for the therapeutic release I get than to get really good at BJJ. I'm also a purple belt and I'm lucky enough to have my skill and experience allow me to tailor my training based on my energy levels.
jiu jitsu is insanely expensive, the people I know in our gym that train twice a week, do so because of money. Everything is money, money, money, down to the fees to compete (too high), if you also want to compete no-gi, you have a small discount but it's money here, money there, money to buy the regulation uniform to compete nogi, if you go by ibjjf. When they do those vids saying "why so many blue belts, etc, etc, quit?", not only blue belts and the problem is money. Jiu Jitsu is a hobby, for 99.99% of people, an activity where you don't get $$ return and you do it because you like it, is the definition of a hobby, and it costs money in this case
I never understood this point of view. When people go out for the weekend, they easily spend a hundred dollars a night, especially young guys in their 20's. For guys that are trying to stay healthy, BJJ is relatively inexpensive in comparison to going out to the bars.
I'm coming back from not training for about 3 years and training sporadically for about 6 months before that. It's very difficult my brain doesn't remember half of what i know and my body isn't executing on the other half. Still I'm so stoked to be back on the mats
Bernardo knows it’s not enough lol. This man slept (literally) on the mats. I’m 50 yr old blue. I train 4 times a week. Your management of injuries and recovery, for me I do a lot on the mats. If I know certain partners (young) have 1 gear I’ll roll with 1 then roll with my pier group. And if I want to work on technique and not go assassin mode I’ll roll with the upper belts. Mental BJJ is a thing as well. I study, read and watch others. I manage my longevity on how I roll. I think how you roll (especially older) is the most important factor in BJJ health.
One of the older guys (40+) I know goes 3-4 times a week and I asked him how he's able to do it at his age and he said that he only rolls once a week and only stays for the technique portion of the class the other days. He's a physical therapist and works his hands and can't afford to get injured. I'm getting older too so now I go 2-3 times a week and roll on one of the days and if my body isn't too beat up I'll roll one round during the second session.
I train 2x a week right now because I’m working part time I’m 18 but on my day off that I have practice they are starting a day class so I can attend that and the night class would that count as 3 ?
guys... genuniely the best advice ever... stop masterbating and your strength / balance / calm / nice guy tendencies go out the window... your get stronger and more creative... i go 1.5 times a week on average and ive some how managed to catch up to someone who goes 3 times a week for 3 times longer than me... no joke...
Genuinely the worst advice ever, you're increasing your risk of prostate cancer by doing this. BJJ and any strength gains you think you're getting are not worth death
How about 2x per month lol? Seriously. Private class about 2 hours each time with a planned out lesson plan. When not on the mats a lot of time is spent watching and analyzing matches and instructionals? (Work & family life very restrictive)
How often do you train Jiu Jitsu?
10-13 times a week
3 days a week
2/week. 5-6/week if my shoulder ever heals 😂
I prefer BJJ THEN NO GI JIU JISTU
Married with five kids. Full time job and I train 5️⃣ to 6️⃣ days a week. I’ve done so for two years walilah alhamd now but the key is consistency. I’m 43 btw. Oss
Its all about injuries and recovery. Three is perfect, two is good
You nailed it with the recovery.

I prefer two so I can have one day of strength training. I find that very helpful to minimize injury.

HUGE Honor. Thanks Bernardo
55 yo seasoned blue belt hobbyist. 2-3 per week works for me and it stays fun.
47 yr old... blue belt hobbyist. I average 2.7 times a week (based on my login stats). It's great!
Same here. 51yr old 4 tip white belt hobbyist. 3 min 4 tops. Cheers!

grats
I am 36 and train every Monday, and one Saturday a month. So….. 5x a month. 10 months in and I think I’m learning well. I also weight train 3x a week
Thanks Bernardo as a dad with a busy career x2 days is all i can do, but i stay for the second class so its like 3/4 classes a week i suppose.

Like you said depends on the goals.. not enough to become world champion but enough to learn and staying healthy

Huge honor brother coach bernardo tnx again to this vid
Wow. This is so true, crazy how I needed this video. Oss
I train once a week, based on personal commitments. I still kick ass in class. I do mobility and weight training 4 days a week.
There is a point where it isn’t called “training” anymore. Two days, sure. But that’s about the lowest frequency you can call “training”.
Take it from someone who should've been a black belt by now; at least once a week! Just don't stop going to practice.
I'm coming back from not training for about 3 years and training sporadically for about 6 months before that. It's very difficult my brain doesn't remember half of what i know and my body isn't executing on the other half. Still I'm so stoked to be back on the mats
I do 2 a week, cant do any more, work and family. I am busy with life, i find im not progressing very fast. White belt, 1 year training.
Training 3 times a week + strength and conditioning and sometimes running.
Goal is long term if I can afford the time and dues.
Thanks Bernardo.
Oss.
I train jiu jitsu 3 times and boxing 3 times in the week
Damn how do you find the time for that lol
@@JEFFMAN90 monday, wednesday, and saturday i do boxing. Tuesday, thursday, and friday bjj. Sunday i rest
Bernardo knows it’s not enough lol. This man slept (literally) on the mats.

It all up to you. Prob not enough if you’re trying to get to adcc level.
I go once a week because that’s all the spare time I have and I’m still progressive and competitive.
Can you attain black belt at 2-3x per week for 10years?
Thank you!!!

Ive had to take 3 months off due to injuries. 2 days helps me recover . Quality over quantity. I absorb more at a steady pace
Honestly 3 to 4 is the perfect spot.
But if I feel not good I just go for either boxing or just weight lifting.
It's a marathon, not a race. Whatever is best for your body is the perfect amount.
To me 3 is perfect. Every other day, then strength or mobility training.
You’re based out of Massachusetts?
Professor, what if your 55y/o Blue Belt. Is 3x per week (2x each day) too much? Say M,W,Fri and workout / recovery T,TS?
I train 2x a week right now because I’m working part time I’m 18 but on my day off that I have practice they are starting a day class so I can attend that and the night class would that count as 3 ?
It all depends on the the clients or practitioner goal
As a bjj owner yeah it’s enough as a student it’s never enough
2-3 a week is good id say especially if youre working or doing other physical activities
People get mad at me because I tap them out going only one day a week. I can’t wait to go back this summer and train my ass off.

I am training 5 and still suck at it :)
I try to hit 3 every week and 3days at the gym to hit ;chest, legs, and back then a total rest day
23 y/o blue belt, 4× per week 🤙🏽
It's gotta be.
You have a name like a Brazilian but you sound like that one character from Ren and Stimpy
Yes it's better than nothing.
Is training BJJ once a week enough? 😉😀
Two is more than none a week. I WISH and would love to train everyday! Priorities dictate time spent elsewhere😅
How about 2x per month lol? Seriously. Private class about 2 hours each time with a planned out lesson plan. When not on the mats a lot of time is spent watching and analyzing matches and instructionals? (Work & family life very restrictive)
3-4 times a week.
Do you think you could become world champion again? Maybe with some steroids?
4 times a week for me would be ideal - 21yo - athletic
Ask Khabib this question first to check his reaction LOL... Pros must do that at least 50 hours a week
Unless those 2 times have really efficient mat time, then naa
No
