    Bernardo is my hero as I have been adopting his deep half n over under pass since I was a white belt. Now as a purple I can sweep and pass black belts too. Thanks my hero.

  • @Vskcov

    Nice breakdown! I can say that the half guard doesn't only work with big guys but also with small guys, just like my case. Since the second half of my time at purple belt, I've been studying half guard hard, like Bernardo Faria's game and variation with the lapel, variations like the dog fight/Coyote sweep, possibility of attacks on the legs and also using the kimura such as attack and late defense guard passing, in addition to other sweeping variations used in the team I train with. In my case, I vary between a more patient game with heavier training partners and more aggressive with lighter training partners. After the sweep, I usually connect with guard passes like the "smash", overunder and passes that seek pressure by controlling the neck, like Murilo Santana did.
    (Sorry for mistakes in my English and congratulations to the work, directly from Curitiba, Brazil)

    • @AlecBaulding
      @AlecBaulding  Год назад +1

      Half guard is a great game it just takes patience to develop that keeps many people away from it. But if used right its a nightmare to deal with guys like Bernardo, Leo Nogueira, Lucas Leite, Leo Saggioro, etc

    • @Vskcov
      @Vskcov Год назад

      @@AlecBauldingduring 2022 I worked with the half guard and it was a long and hard process, with some training colleagues even suggesting that I had become more defensive and passive in my training but after receiving the brown belt and changing the perspective of my training, it's been nice to see that the opinion of several colleagues has changed in relation to half guard, besides being sensational to sweep guys that I didn't imagine getting close to that and to see that the guys less graduate has been inspired by some techniques I've been doing!

    I think one of the overlooked strengths of both his guard and his passing is that he is on the "lefty" side for both. Definitely throwing opponents off with that.

    Thanks mate, this video is exactly what I need. Half guard is my game, but also HG is high reward high punishment for you. People can rob points out of you just simply by pass the HG back and forth. Definetely will buy Bernardo's halfguard tutorials.

    Alec. Why do you think Bernardo stopped playing deep half guard towards the end of his career? Or why is it generally not played as often anymore?

    • @AlecBaulding
      @AlecBaulding  Год назад

      The last match I saw with him was the worlds final with Erberth but I believe he played his deep half up until that point. I think the half guard is not seen as cool as the open guards and can take a while to get going so that keeps a lot of guys from trying it.

    What is the "modern guard style" mentioned at the end?

    • @AlecBaulding

      I would characterize this as any guard style popularized after the mid 2000’s that would include most of the open guards, 50/50, Berimbolo, etc

    Is the rule stopping you from gripping your opponent's pants from the inside a new rule? Leandro seems to be doing that in the old clip with Bernanrdo 02:10

    • @AlecBaulding
      @AlecBaulding  Год назад

      I'm not sure if IBJJF has changed their rule on this but in Abu Dhabi world pro rule set there is no grabbing inside the pants. There should be alternative grips that you can use for the past that Leandro was attempting

    Can the guys in the lighter weight class mimic Bernardo's style to great success? AOJ, specifically, seems to not be a fan of half/deep half guard.

    I think half guard as a primary guard in todays era is bad game. So many people wants to pass from half, you lack of 1 level of defense which are feet, dealing with constant pressure etc. But for Bernardo and his body type it worked! Good analysis

    • @AlecBaulding
      @AlecBaulding  Год назад

      It’s still effective just takes patience and discipline to master…

    • @alexcardoso4487
      @alexcardoso4487 Год назад

      I already think the opposite, for a long time the half guard was that last breath not to be passed... Today the game is well evolved especially in nogui. I see the half guard today as excellent retention, great for sweeps and with a lot of attacks, and I'm not tall lol I adapted well to my biotype, basically my guard is a seated butterfly, half with a knee shield that can go deep or that knee can turn into a hook and I go for a half butterfly, or go for one leg x for traditional X. And all these guards communicate well, you get a good flow from one to the other.

    • @alexcardoso4487
      @alexcardoso4487 Год назад

      I also think that a well done basic half guard knee shield, deep half. It's great for beginners who are lost when they're on the bottom half guard will stop his game the speed of the more advanced guys and ends up giving more security to the beginner because he has more contact so he ends up having more control without letting things become that chaotic passage what the guys do.
