      meh.. for me keenan was a huge failure compared to other sensational bjj althletes for his age/generation
      look at what gordon has done
      look at what craig jones has done
      meh.. one time keenan turned a live stream on and got 2.2k viewers walking around a shopping maul (he had more hype than all those guys put together at one point, he was way ahead of his game in terms of talking/communicating to his viewers
      you can look at his lapel guard as a huge impressive tick on his CV.. but realistically what he COULD of done, the superfights he could of made, the youtube channel he could of made, the potential streaming avenue he could of pursued...
      yet arguably after his lapel guard hype he completely fell off..his gym has been established 10+ years and he dropped his entire channel and personal fame to pull it off.. and go look at his channel now.. like 3k views on his content.. nobody is interested. Compare that to someone like craig jones who has only had B-team established for 2 years... hes already got a roster of high level fighters competing on main stages such as quintet.. already pumping content out both comedic and BJJ related...
      sure he had some success.. but compared to others in a similar boat who capitalised he was a failure

      @@SHERMA. I get what you're saying but your comparing him to the greatest of all time on the mat to the greatest of all time on the mic. With that said BJJ is still a fringe sport and will probably always be...wnba players are more recognized unfortunately.

      @@SHERMA.What is your goal in life? To get as many people to look at you on youtube as possible?
      Kinda sad imo. So shallow. You must think the Kardashians are more successful than Gandhi? Lmao
      Keyan's a millionaire, what does he need youtube views for? Pretty stupid criticism imo.
      He has a gym--his gym not producing top-level athletes is a more reasonable critique. However, if his gym has hundreds of students, and they all grow and learn jiu-jitsu and form a great community, and his teaching has a positive impact on their lives, that seems more important than winning medals imo. For instance, look at Gordon Ryan. Greatest athlete for sure, but every time he opens his mouth he says some embarassingly stupid shit. And his own brother literally moved cross-country to leave his gym and train with other people, seems like more of a failure in life than Keyan in my book. Your statement about Keyan's successes says more about you than it does about Keyan.

    We either love it from a technical and creative lens or hate it because it often leads to stalling and snoozing. Personally I have taught my students it so they can be familiar and they can choose to do what they want with it , but there is something about I never liked about it. As much as I respect it as a creative and controlling element that can lead to moments of excitement when an aggressive player uses it, I just feel a sense of disconnection from our fighting sprit and fighting reality when we start doing these 3 grip passes lapel entanglements. I just never felt a sense of satisfaction hitting a worm guard sweep, kind of felt like I'm gaming the game in a sense. I know that that probably won't resonate well with alot of people . For athletes trying to reach a pro level, it is arguably not going to help you get on cards, because you will be perceived as a boring fighter, whether that is fair or not. Gi BJJ is obviously still very popular but in an amateur sense. NoGi in a professional setting, people are going to get paid more and more as time goes by, because it is currently way more exciting to be a NoGi athlete. At the same time, I don't like the idea of a rule banning multiple lapel passes either. And I love the gi FYI. I just don't see much of a professional future compared to Nogi when lapel games play a big role in high level matches. Keenan is one of the top creative minds though of his generation and deserves much respect.

    • @rrteppo
      @rrteppo Год назад +6

      @@atrocious_pr0xy Depends where you are. If you are at work and a coworker starts swinging they are probably wearing something similar to a Gi, and so in that situation No-Gi is less realistic since in reality clothing gets in the way. At the bar a drunk guy takes his shirt off to start a fight with the first person he sees, No-Gi is all of a sudden more real.
      Know both, practice whichever makes you happier.

To me Capoeira rodas keep all the elements of play aggression deception and rhythm and watching those and learning how it works is the key to keeping sport/spectators entertained.
