Remixing 'FERRYMAN' by City of Souls with Superior Drummer 3

  • In this video, I’m remixing a City of Souls song using the original audio from the session I produced in 2018. The multi-track drums were converted from audio to MIDI using the built-in ’Tracker’ feature in Superior Drummer 3. The sounds you’re hearing from the drums are all from The Progressive Foundry SDX, which is an expansion for Superior Drummer 3 that I recorded at Sing Sing in Melbourne. I’ll walk you through the process of how I layered drums, used the onboard Superior Drummer 3 effects and utilized the features in the built-in mixer. Hopefully you’ll find lots of useful tips and tricks!

    Man, that velocity curve trick is pure gold. I track a lot of drums to midi and I always struggle with ghost notes been too loud and unnatural and end up manually bringing them down. But with your trick, I reckon I'll start tuning the curve like you have and it'll sound much more natural and get the job done quicker. Thanks mate!

    Forrester: This is such a great tutorial! Quick question: I know the bass is the metal ebx, but is that a specific preset or are you processing it outside of the ebx? It is the perfect distorted bass sound I’m after and I’m considering buying that ebx based on the way the bass sounds in this video, but want to know if I can get that sound or if I’d need other plugins and processors. Thanks in advance!!

    Nice mix! I have a question, the trick of use the velocity curve section of sd3 will it still be useful if I already adjusted the velocities of every snare hit and ghost notes? Cheers

    One question. At the beginning you tried some factory presets ... I wonder if the mix bus change when you change between presets. I mean, reverbs, transients, eqs and so are included insinde the factory presets or I´m listening the presets through your superior mix?

    Masterwork !
    I freaking love this expansion, the snares are the best, especially the Mapex Black Panter Maple and the Ludwig Black Magic ones !
    Could you share us your presets, like something to download maybe ???
    I am having a hard time making my snare as resonnant and big as yours... Mine is taking so little space in the middle of the mix even with some rooms. I don't have this problems with toms...
    What can I do ?
    I will rewatch carefully your video, I NEED to understand what you've done !!!

    How does the detector work on cymbals? Does it recognizes what type of cymbal is being played? Do you usually adjust MIDI velocities or quantization when using the detector?

    • @forrester_savell
      @forrester_savell  3 года назад +3

      It detects different velocities and pitch tonalities which can be focused for extraction. It takes a bit more finessing than shells but its quite amazing once you get in and start working with it. It helps if there are spot mics on cymbals i.e. hihats, ride, china etc, but can be done with overheads easily.

      @@forrester_savell Man, Really cool! Sounds huge. Any chance of making a video going thru the process of extracting the Drms and cymbals with superior? I struggle with it to work well, mostly on cymbals! Again awesome video, Thank you :)
