    Welcome back!
I'm not against the idea of Orks being used as one dimensional monsters in a homebrew campaign, though its not my preferred way of presenting them. But if thats the case the DM could at least tell the poor soul who is playing one or (and here's a really wild thought) actually discuss the setting in advance with the whole party!

I know right, the DM could have set down with the player and they could have found a solution or the player might have just played something else

Agreed! i did this once by writing into the story that works were so far removed from hominoids that half orcs were impossible and they were too territorial to have anything more than small bands/tribals that are mostly family anyway. (i did this because i was being lazy with my writing and just wanted something the players wouldn't find harmful to kill in later levels the way most* players deal with rats in lower levels)

And that in my opinion is totally fine but, if you wouldn't tell your players about it and one of them wanted to play an orc only to find out that during game it would suck.

Its a pet peeve of mine.
No one and nothing is a one dimensional monster. If something can think and sct and talk, its certainly not a one dimensional monster. If you can't imagine the peoples of your world complexly then you're lacking in imagination. They become better villains, better heroes and better mobs by thinking about them like they're intelligent individuals with goals and drives.

Also, I know unsolicited advice is not something one should generally give out, but I think your videos could benefit from an increase in volume. I can only speak for myself of course, but I like to have these story-type videos on in the background while doing other things. Be it playing games, driving, chores etc. It can be hard to hear you without having to pump my volume, which leaves me deaf when I get to the next video.

I'm glad to be back, I have herd several people ask for me to make the volume lower and I will do my best next video I'm just alweys so scared to make it too loud.

Playing the Chad wholesome orc of politeness and strength beyond measure vs having to play the virgin murderhobo savage orc with with no direction and plot aside from fighting.

Gnomes in folklore (If i remember it right) were minor earth spirits that could freely move through soil or something. Gnomes went from monsters to playable race (species), to monsters, and back to a playable species.
Previously relied on spells or stealth because of small size and less dexterity than the hobbits. Now the DM of the story would probably make them exclusively inventors and alchemists.

Yeah they would probably fall into the Artificer class mort of the time huh

Oof, what an awful DM. That's the sort of stuff you clear with all the players in Session 0, not several sessions into the campaign. Sure, stereotypes are one thing, but the player characters are supposed to be mold breakers anyway.
Anywho, great video! Happy to be your 200th subscriber 😁

Obviously racism and prejudice are very serious things we unfortunately still have to deal with. I don't pretend to understand wny people descriminate in real life but I can't imagine being so prejudiced against a fictional race of people from a game that only exists for us to have fun. Is racism and bigotry fun? I don't get it.

    • @pandachantheking
      @pandachantheking  7 месяцев назад

Yeah I don't get it at all eather, dnd and ttrpgs are in my opinion a way to get away from real life problems. Or at the very least the players should have a disclaimer for that kind of thing

After giving it some thought (something I should do more of before writing replies), I think they are BOTH at fault. They both clearly had a lot of animosity toward each other before the campaign even started. The OP referred to him as "our group's 'that guy'." OP never thought of him as a friend, and was trying to exclude him from the group for what apparently was quite some time. Does it seem like such a coincidence that the OP would choose to play an orc and ask certain leading questions? This became a game of chicken between the two of them. If the DM answered honestly about his expectations of orcs, the OP could have publicly attacked him as some kind of bigot. The DM refused to do that. In his mind, his interpretation of orcs in his setting was "nothing out of the ordinary." His excuse was mostly technically correct; orcs are mythological monsters, and it is only in recent times where there is an effort to reinvent them as effectively just humans with a different skin color. She was also mostly technically correct in that for a long time, there have been two divisions of orcs in the FR (one almost entirely brutish and one merely mostly brutish).
That said, the DM clearly knew what the OP was getting at. By not mentioning it and just letting it slide by, he was probably hoping to trap the OP in a situation where he could put the OP's time investment at risk, and draw an Uno Reverse card to exclude the OP from the group instead. Meanwhile, the OP was trying to become a martyr. So they both went on, pretending to be ignorant of what the other was thinking, all so they could try to exclude the other from the group.
They were both wrong. Neither of them was earnest with their intentions, nor open-minded/hearted toward the other. Both were trying to expel the other to the out-group, one doing so from a soap box of social justice, the other from a soap box of tradition. But for both of them, their soap boxes were just thinly-veiled justifications to be mean toward the other. This amount of backstabbing, dishonesty, self-assuredness, martyrdom, and lack of perspective is kind of why I usually avoid RPG horror stories. But thanks for the video, anyway.
On the bright side, they both got what they wanted.

That is really insightful and an interesting deconstruction of the whole situation. I didn't really expect to get such a long and insightful comment. I do see your point, in my eyes the the DM should be the one to let the players know about their world, especially if one of the players decides to play someone like an orc. And I do think the DM not taking the time to read a players backstory is a bad sign.
I appreciate that you took the time to watch my video even if its not your cup of tea and thank you for writing such a in depth response to it.
