Honestly its so strange to see a DM do something like this, it really makes you wonder what they thought was gonna happen.
"You all die and then I give you new sheets so I can kill you again!" But why?? Its just not fun and i dont think its even "dm who should've written a book" worthy
Players should get to play too, dangit!

Oh yeah totally not write a book worthy I agree. It's super mean to kill someone's player just to show off your "super cool DMPC".

Id say im a fairly good DM, all of this sounds so dubious to me. Especially for new players and DMs there is little reason to already homebrew your game to this degree.

I get why someone would want to homebrew a game to make it more fun for themselves but yeah I don't think you need to worry about that when you are just starting off or even on your 3rd campaign.

Oh that is difficult to some degree. 🤔 hmmm favorite one shot? Well….the holiday season one I guess? We fought living veggies and stacks of pancakes and then, later, a hydra turkey. Yes, all the monsters were food 😂 but yeah, it was fun. I played an earth genasi arcane trickster with a level of wizard (for extra perks and ritual spells). The one shot first started in a festival which was fun to participate in all the games and such in. My favorite part was having my genasi use mold earth to create pictures on the ground and tell stories for the village children though. It was a cute moment.
But I do enjoy the most recent character I made for a one shot which is an aasimar moon druid. Don’t ask me why I did the ill-advised thing like set up a druid for a one shot with less than 48 hours notice. Lol I also ended up assisting every single other participant to set up their sheets properly too. We had a kid who had never been part of a one shot who I had to reign in and explain how certain concepts they wanted to do just don’t work for a one shot (told him to write his ideas down for a long form campaign though, they were good, just not viable under a oneshot). I still love my aasimar moon druid though. She was fun to rp and I love the tiny backstory quirk the dm and I discussed which is that my aasimar was born to a swanmay mother and so has a cloak made from the gifted feathers of the mother and her entire sorority. Lol also I just love having used the wings while wild shaped into a bear. It was hilarious!
Omg a bear with wings sounds os funny! And the holiday oneshot sounds fun too! The one we did for Christmas's we had to fight the grinch so it was a lot of fun as well
@@pandachantheking lol yeah I realized that I could summon my aasimar wings AND still be in wild shape so I ran it by the DM who confirmed that yes that seemed to be allowed and would allow it also himself. Unfortunately I never got much I could do with it but it was a oneshot so no biggie. That dm will be using that same homebrew world for other future oneshots though so my aasimar druid will be making a comeback. The plan is for days where a party can’t run their usual session, to ask the server who is available and run a oneshot together so we can still all get our dnd fix. Even if that isn’t enough, our dm will have us test out some maps and/or help him world build out some of the setting. So it’s still a dnd fix.
And yeah the silliness of that holiday oneshot was a blast. I really hope he runs it again and I can try a new character for it.

Feels really odd that a previously good DM could go off the deep end so badly, maybe he'd had enough of being a forever DM and throwing his overpowered DMPC into games to kill the players was some weird way of acting out?
Maybe it could explain the sudden shift. Don't really feel like it excuses it though. If the DM got tierd of running the game there should really have been a better way of expressing it. I do see what you mean though, maybe it was a cry for help ?

As a mostly Forever DM who gets frustrated at almost never getting to be a player as often as I'd like (i.e. rare one shots, never played in a full campaign to the end), I can absolutely see that happening. In my current campaign I inserted a few secret DMPCs to be around the party so I can at least feel like I can talk with the party members as equals. Notice how I said secret, because the DMPC(s) don't do major damage during battle and one of the players even complimented me saying "I like how you don't do the cringe thing of rolling against yourself."
This DM however went about it WAY wrong, making one's players into monsters only works if it's a Halloween special folks signed up for. The fact he had a nat 20 MISS (which in RAW is not only an auto-hit but a crit) tell me he wanted not only to play but to "win" D&D too. He needs to peer into r/lfg saved me from forever DMing and I'm having both a(n eldritch) blast with my Warlock PC without feeling left out in the campaign I run for my players.
@@StSubZero oh yes i totaly agree. secret Dmpcs are not bad at all as long as the DM dosent just try playing agenst himself. im glad you found a group you can play in and i honestly laughtd so much at the Eldrich blast joke i nearly fell off my chair. 💜
