- Classics. Restomods. Replicas. Continuations. All have the gorgeous vintage looks, but each is fundamentally different under the skin. Chris Harris and Top Gear Magazine editor Jack Rix discuss the differences of things like the Alfaholics GTA-R, Eagle Lightweight GT and GTO Engineering's recreation of the Ferrari 250 SWB.

Restomods, I think, are the answer to the problem of "Don't meet your heroes, because they'll disappoint you". Nothing from the 70s, 80s or even 90s will live up to modern expectations of performance, handling, braking or reliability, so the cars we put on pedestals and worship will feel crap when we finally get to drive them. Restomods solve that and I think they're fantastic.
Owning a 300bhp Jaguar MK2 4.2 (uprated from 3.8) Vicarage restomod I've got to say they get my vote!
Resto-sure.. Harris Continuations his talks as an absolute Classic
The younger guy just sound like he doesn’t understand driving, cars or balance when he starts mashing up all the cars and engines at the end. Like everything that’s wrong with car culture today, bigger car, bigger engine, bigger wheels, bigger grill, bigger noise, bigger price tag, just BIGGER with less sense. Then you have Chris, who understands finesse and engineering, has an excellent understanding of why cars work and what would drive well, plus a great appreciation for history and proper style. Kudos Chris
love what the retropower guys are doing at the mo.
Cracking! I agree, you’ve got to use components from the same manufacturer. Although not following those rules, I always wanted to do a Triumph Stag with a modern low capacity V8, possibly M60 in 3 and 4 litre forms. Not rocket ships but a big improvement on the original.
The Peugeot + Honda sounds absolutely right.
I can’t help myself but to throw in a few suggestions on my own:
Citroen SM with the «half Ferrari» engine from the new Alfa.. mmm.
Or
Citroen DS with some small turbocharged 3 cylinder like the GR Yaris. With an auto. Smoooooth, cool and beautiful.
Or
Alfa Romeo from the 60’s with the cheese grader front and big headlights(I know, but there is nothing for it. Just so beatiful) with something N/A that revs to 11000 rpm. Rather some smaller high reving thing than too big and heavy. H pattern with gated shifter. With all the alfaholics titanium, chassis mods, suspension and brakes thingies on it. Just because they do it so well.
I agree about the Peugeot/ K20A2 Honda hybrid.
I love these videos, reminds me of /drive when they used to talk at Manhattan car club
How about Morgan that have been making old-looking cars for ages with modern engines!?
id just call that retro styling since its all new parts
yeah the 205 with a spicy late 90's honda engine sounds like a good combo
Absolutely love this series
OY... WHAT ABOUT THE CYAN ROADSTER IN THE TITLE? Beautiful $500k P1800 Volvo
Not as a flame or knock, but a "RestoMod" is a restoration of an old car with new equipment. Not really the other way around. If the car is made to look old, but is all new it's just a "RetroMod."
More of this please. Cracking bit of chat
Peugeot 205 with Honda Type R running gear and gearchange! Almost as perfect as a Honda Integra Type R DC2 JDM with that gear 👌. Like the one in my shed 👍👍
LP400 restomod would work nice with a Gallardo V10.
I´d probably want a Murcielago V12. Crazy enough and still almost the same engine, but not as crazy as an aventador.
Id take a TR4 on British Racing Green with a hakosuka straight 6 and modern suspension upgrades and im good
That was a great interview
What about an ‘80s Aston Martin Lagonda with modern technic?
I love the Singer.
I have to say, I disagree with his definition of restomod. I think most would agree a restomod is an older car that's had a more modern engine, suspension and brakes added. A BMW 2002 with an S14 engine and running gear from more modern BMWs would be an example, or any number of 60s era American cars with new crate engines added.
These 2 gents and stig is what i associated with the current Top Gear. I think Top Gear should stop recreating those challenges type TV Show, that will only work with the original trio of May, Jeremy, and Hammond. They should make more of these videos and chris harris drives.
Mercedes Pagoda pimped up please.
W124 with a modern amg engine would be something I’d like to do
that fan buzz in the background is unacceptably painful in the long run. Come on, sound engineer...
Restomod....wrong. A restomod is an old car updated. Example would be a 67 Camaro with modern suspension, bigger and wider wheels and tires and an LS7 engine. It isn't a newer car made to look old.
"Peugeot has nothing of any merit" GET OUT HARRIS!!! Have you forgotten that their fwd tarmac 306's beat the 4wd turbo WRC cars using the N/A 2.0 16v engine, in higher than the then touring car spec, reving to just under 9k and making very nearly 300 bhp!!!!. With it's 86x86 bore to stroke and wide cylinder spacing allowing futher over-squaring, and most critically hugely generously size tappets allowing the use a cams with super aggressive lift and accelerations, and a lovely, compact, big valve cylinder head running at decent 11.5:1 compression ratio.......
The roast about the Ferrari engine inside the Lambo. lmao.
Chris is the man!
ruclips.net/video/QKCX1eIZQ6k/видео.html
That comment wasn't at all accurate though was it? The Countach is mid-engined, not rear-engined, so in fact the engine would not be the wrong way around at all. And even if it was, Ferrari takes drive out of the front of the same engine in the GTC4lusso, so it wouldn't matter anyway. Furthermore, previous generation port-injected versions of the same engine and even the direct-injected version in the 599 could be optioned with manual boxes, so that would not be out of the question either I'm sure. All of this ignores the fact that exactly the same engine, presumably with minor alterations (e.g. cams, intake and exhaust and ECU map) is mid-mounted in the Ferrari laferrari AND the Apollo!
These videos are doing their very best to convince me that Chris is really just a bit of a grumpy old git now, as much as I don't want to believe it. Come on, a little enthusiasm and fewer snide comments would be really appreciated!
@@richardcarter8801 You would certainly be able to fit an engine in the enginebay of the lambo, but probably not the one he wanted since the gearbox is quite a long one. Could probably get another one, but would be tricky to get it right with the driveshaft positions.

As a restorer and custom builder of motorcycles, I can emphatically say that "Resto-Mod" applies more to older vehicles that are restored with slight modernised modifications included in the process (i.e. Restored-Modified)... not just newer vehicles made to look more vintage as Chris stated (all due respect to Mr Harris, he's an absolute gentleman and a scholar and knows his cars). Great vid. Cheers from Aussieland 🤙🍻
I agree that caught my ear too
Agree. Solid comment mate. Also from the land down under.
Totally agree and super surprised that Chris doesn't immediately clarify the difference between: "restomods" as a OLD TO NEW specific thing > restoring an old vehicle by enhancing it with newer technologies to improve its performance > ALFAHOLICS or MST for exemple, VS "backdating" as a more NEW TO OLD casual thing > give a recent vehicle a vintage look thanks to aesthetic customization > very common on the Porsche scene, particularly with, for example, the large number of 964 or 911 type Gs aesthetically dressed in a classic way /front and rear bumpers, fenders, wheels, etc... And sometimes, talented entrepreneurs combine the two, by deciding to push the sliders to the max > SINGER or RUF as sports car manufacturer, correct ?! Anyway, truly and full respect for Chris 🙌. Cheers 🏁

Sounds like Chris is mixing up restomod and backdate.
ruclips.net/video/QKCX1eIZQ6k/видео.html
I totally agree. A restomod is a restored old car with newer technology under the skin. The term has been around a lot longer then 'designer' custom car shops have been applying it to toys for billionaires. It's straight out of the hot rod world. Does the 'backdate' thing exist as a style of building cars or a type of car anywhere outside the 911 and maybe the Jag world? It is just something that people have done inmost or maybe all classic car scenes for ever. Typically replacing impact bumpers with what preceeded them, and or fitting some older style trim or panels. Chirs - I like your TV and reviews a lot, and I love Singer 911's (even though I also think the whole 'billionaire budget custom car' thing is kind of ruining things for the custom car builder with a more typical budget), but your lack of a modified car / car building background shows through here!
@@richardjones38 good point about Porsche and backdating. Some brands do mild backdating because of the big bumper changeover (280Z to 240Z, Alpha Romeo, Jaguar, etc) but nobody does this to the extent that Porsche does. I believe this is because of the long tenure of the air-cooled 911 body.
@Mike Mac To be truthful, Singer is really both.
@@JanMichaelFranklin very much so. 964 body, long hood (backdate) with all sorts of modern tech applied.
The Singer DLS has to be one of the best restomod style cars we've ever had. Its absolutely stunning
Not really. The body is way too wide. They took the earliest designs but they had to widen it. The first 911 was an elegant car. The DLS looks silly.
I agree, the one from a few years ago at the Goodwood FoS, with the red paint and the Fuch's wheels with the 70 painted on the inside and on the body was incredible, i believe to represent 70 years of porsche.
The DLS is a very special thing, an amazing amount of attention to detail has gone into that car.
@@iiredeyeiiredeye1569 attention to detail does not mean the end result is beautiful. I get that looks are subjective but it’s not pleasing to look at.

Chris Harris needs to drive the Alfarrari being built by "Home Built By Jeff" once it's done, a Ferrari 360 Modena engine in a little 60s Alfa, that's going to be an absolute weapon. 😎👍
Probably gonna be a few years off yet.
Lancia Beta Montecarlo with a later version of the Lampredi-engine (same block, so should fit) plus proper brakes off course.
How about with an Integrale motor?
Who cares about 0-100 times in a Tesla, Taycan or some supercar, when you can drive real, pure and emotional cars like these. Love it!🙏❤️
ruclips.net/video/QKCX1eIZQ6k/видео.html
I care.A lot. These old cars were way before I was born so I don't have any nostalgia towards them.992 turbo s all day, anyday over a Singer 911.
Cost, really. Even though Tesla, Taycans and other cars are expensive, these restomods are 2-10x more expensive.
... for 1.2MM. And everything is hand fitted so for God's sale don't thrash it.
drdoomgoat 38 I understand. And of course everything is a personal preference. So no right or wrong here. I just think it’s a shame that cars that can give you a real thrill and even be scary because they’re not equipped with all these electronic nannies and cars that let you, the driver do the work instead of 150 computers onboard are completely disappearing. Except for the new T50 from Gordon Murray..🙏 for me personally, when I drive the 992..even though I’m way faster on a lap with that thing, I enjoy “working” in a older (slower) 911 more. It’s just gives you more satisfaction, because you..the driver has the have complete control over the car.
1984 Lotus Esprit with the Turbo decal, square gullwing doors, dashboard from a late model Aston Martin Lagonda with a tachometer from a 1989 Buick Reatta and radio that only plays synthwave. Oh and the latest Tesla "engine" with the Star Wars woosh sound app.
Oh love the car choice but nooo tesla, IMO it should be a 1.5l Renault Turbo V6 from the F1 cars, with a 6-speed H pattern, but street friendly cam, modern turbo and ECU. Lets say 11krpm and 2,4 bar of boost or so :)
I think for the restomods when transplanting engine from one brand into another, some kind of tenuous link is needed between the brands and the engine to make it feel legit. Examples;
Stuffing Honda engines into classic Minis is fine due to the link up with Honda and Rover in the late 80s/early 90s.
Stuffing a McLaren 3.8 v8 into any S Platform Nissan such as a Silvia would be great as the McLaren engine can trace its routes back through Tom Walkinshaw Racing to the Nissan VRH engines used in many of the late 80s LeMans prototypes.
Final example and possibly the most tenuous I can think of, Transplanting the turbo SAAB 9-5 B235 250hp engine into a Dolomite Sprint as that engines heritage starts with the Triumph Slant 4.
I’m sure there are many more examples out there but I feel some kind of tenuous link is needed to justify a cross brand change.
It's getting easier as more and more car companies merge with each other, for example Fiat used to own Ferrari and now they've merged with Chrysler so a Ferrari engine in a Dodge Charger and a Hemi engine in a classic Ferrari is all fair game now...
@@kieranjamieson In that same vein, how about a Hellcat in an Opel Monza? Or an F154 V6 in a Peugeot 505? The formation of Stellantis opens up all kinds of fun mashup possibilities.
Best car guy , racer and host ever. He walked the walk and has the respect to talk it too.👍
99% agree. But he bangs on about SUVs, then has a G Wagon. I'm sure he is not unaware of the biblical levels of hypocrisy (regardless of his 'need') in such a purchase
by his own admission, he's done no rallying. So the mileage on the G must be zero? Otherwise he's a hypocrite
He said (basically) that we're gonna look back at the SUV craze with shame. And he's plumped for the most ostentatious of the lot. Then, you give him a free pass cos he's doing something with it you approve of. He can't bemoan their existence as he has, literally, voted with his own money for more to be produced. That is the definition of hypocrisy.
@@pigeonpoo1823 He has addressed it before. He feels like the G-Wagon is honest since it is big and bulky and boxy and not trying to be a sports car and an SUV like the others.
@@pigeonpoo1823 wrong, he has done rallying, he's got a couple of E30 rally cars, a 325i and an M3...
Was thinking 205 GTi as well. K20 is a good shout and perhaps a multilink setup at the rear to sort out the snap oversteer. I am also thinking about that AX GT he has in a barn. What engine is light enough, revs freely enough and is small enough to slot in there? Might aswell point this out but Chris Harris just recommended a FWD hot hatch as a perfect restomod.
That Alfaholics GTA is something special.
Any of the cars named above plus some new options like Lancia Aurelia with small V8, maybe BMW 635 CSI or Alpina B9 3.5, Peugeot 406 Coupe with potent engine, that Lancia Integrale restomod, something nice done with Jaguar XJ6 or XJS... so many options! But I would also be tempted to put one electric version to maybe older Rolls or Bentley.
I love how the host asks Chris Harris to explain the difference between each type of car and then proceeds to provide an example of a ‘restomod’ in complete contradiction to the explanation just given. Well played sir👍👍
How about DeTomaso Pantera with a coyote 5.0 and carbon fiber bodywork?
Nah, too small. Got to be an LS7 ;)
The W124 500E with the M119 V8 engine would accommodate the M113 V8 almost as a direct bolt in replacement, with very little work comparible to the newer 4.0 biturbo that Chris references.
Don't forget the M113 featured in the SLR McLaren with a supercharger and over 600HP.
Many many donor cars around, every E55K, CL55K, S55K and SL55K. They all have around 500hp from the factory but even with standard supercharger and injectors they can achieve a reliable 600hp with a smaller pulley on the charger and a remap.
Also, arguably a better sound than the more modern AMG lump, especially when the older M113K had an X pipe fitted. Combination of supercharger scowl and V8 AMG burble... excellent!
I think I'm onto something here.
Disagree w Harris here, there’s already lots of 205 GTI 16 around (engine from 405Mi16 or 309GTI16). Cracking engine, and period too!
EXACTLY, I think he was limiting himself to brand new engines and so came to the conclusion there is nothing exciting out there. But just because its "restomod" doesnt mean it has to have a brand new engine IMO.
Would love to see some Restomod a Deloren. The car was deeply flawed to begin with, so any improvement to it's engine, steering, gearbox & brakes would be most welcome.
With the Venturi version of that awful engine? 400bhp? Yes please!
Someone somewhere will have put a Honda K20 in a 205. Probably a LS as well.
Some already did it: www.205gtidrivers.com/forums/topic/167566-k20-205/
There's a K20 Mk2 Fiesta ripping round the UK somewhere it's beast looks totally standard too
@@Kocan7 I thought someone on 205 drivers would have, good to see the forum is still going 😊
If we're playing the same manufacturer game, you could get a very similar car (restomod 205) using a 4th gen civic (EF) hatch shell and a Type R swap. No one is making them as a business, but that approach is very popular in America for individual project cars. Most of those owners are more interested in the driving dynamics than fit and finish, though, so the interiors tend to be lackluster to save money.
K20's have been Europe's LS engine equivalent for a while. They have been swapped on every car imaginable. I met a kid in Sweden years ago who put one in a Volvo 740. Now, a LS would be too much of a stretch to put inside a 205 engine bay. But doable...

Chris why not the 205 body with the driveline of an peugeot 208 GTI 270 ?? more then enough for a 1000kg car i guese. Good gearbox with a diff. Put it in stock form to a tuner and it will bring it up from 270pk/330Nm -> 300pk/380Nm. And the 1.6 unit is probebly much lighter then the 2.0 unit from honda.
Your definition of restomod is wrong Chris.
Its an old car with modern suspension, brakes, uprated engine and other modern tech.
Eagle E type, Alfaholics and JIA Interceptor are original shells with modern bits fitted.
Only the Singer kinda meets your description but even then though they do make it look older its still basically an old 911 with modern bits fitted.
NONE of them are modern cars made to look old.
The clue is in the name.
Restomod = resto+mod aka restore and modify/modernise
Oh and there's already a category for stuff like the GTO Engineering SWB and its called toolroom recreation or toolroom copy
Don't forget though that even GTO Engineering need a lesser ferrari base car - usually 250 or 330 gt 2+2 or the like to pull to pieces for the chassis plate (and the purists really don't like this) or it'd have to be classed as a brand new build and be subject to modern regs.
Sad to hear some car lovers falling out of love for new performance cars and dreaming about owning older stuff. I’m 19 years old, so I’m into the modern cars. I love conversations like these. Unscripted, from a place of passion, just two blokes talking about cars. The 205 GTI with a Honda engine? Brilliant.
That is a horribly incorrect definition of a restomod. Surprised that he mixed it up. Dressing a newer car to look older is NOT what a Restomod is.
Be interesting to see what he thinks about the Aussie guy currently putting an F430 engine in one of those Alfa’s.
I think that would fly over a bit better since Ferrari has been owned by Fiat since the 60s. Whereas Lambo and Ferrari have always been separate entities and rivals. Putting a ferrari engine into a lambo would be the ultimate affront.
Well you see Chris you are wrong. The EW10J4s from Peugeot is very similar to a K20, only it has more torque everywhere, easily revs to 8500 and it won the S2000 rally class 3 times in a row.
So yeah put your K20 with less torque in it and you will loose against the EW10J4s. The gearbox is horrible, but the engine has more guts than the Honda.
Yep and then if ya rich enough, just add a sedev box to keep it all french 😊

Alfaholics is a restomod not the same class as the GTO Eng 250 SWB, it uses the chassis and floorpan from a 105 series Guilia not a totally custom built frame like the SWB.
Speaking of that SWB, the class of car that the GTO Engineering SWB is already has a name - Toolroom Recreation or Toolroom Copy.
He also glosses over the fact that each of their copies kills a "lesser" Ferrari model to gain its chassis plate and sometimes engine (usually a 250 or 330 gt 2+2) for an identity.
Then that crap about most matching numbers cars arent matching. He clearly doesn't follow the classic makes much.
If a Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, Jaguar etc has an engine stamping that doesn't look right (and people study them hard) then that info and relevant pics will always get into the public domain and that car will always have a stigma and story attached - and some of these weird forum people keep their own records on cars they will never own or in some cases never even see in person. The facts won't ever go away.
The "engine must be from same make" thing. So people haven't been using LS, SR20 or 2JZ engines in multiple makes of restomod for years then.
People already do 205's and achieve 200bhp odd from modified mi16 and gti6 engines using modern jenvey itb's and a good ecu - no need for Honda engines
@@th3b0untyhunter the restomod thing is a subjective argument over semantics. Many restomods use a complete rolling chassis from a modern donor car and just weld an old body on top. Faking of matching numbers is a real problem in the classic car world, Harris is in touch with all the big auctioneers and knows about this stuff. Yeah, the 250 SWB uses a donor, but usually it'll be a knackered, rusty barn find that they can pull a VIN off, little more.
Peugeot is now making a v12 multi-turbo with one million hp to show Pepe Guardiola!
The world of journalism, in every discipline, is in dire need of honest, based and straightforward people like Mr. Harris.
Please continue this format. People want critique, education, argumentation. Let those youtube marketing-paid, stupid hype dealers eat Chris' dirt.
Great video.
Bought a 2019 Subaru STI.....a real-time restomod. :) 1990's in a bottle with current safety and a warranty. And hydraulic steering. Wonderful car. Underappreciated.
How about a De Tomaso Pantera with the Ford Voodoo V8 and a 6 spd manual.
My absolute DREAM of a restomod is getting into my 99 Renault Twingo a VW 1.0 TSI engine in the front and a BMW i3 powertrain in the back. 300hp 4WD hybrid hatch weighing in at around 1000kg? YES PLEASE
Jack, stop interrupting people. Please.

Why dont they take a Pug1off for a spin ?
Chris: 205 with vtec
Me: can this be done? I WILL do it regardless
Let’s have a thought little hatchback that weighs nothing with a high rev motor cycle engine
Polo mk1 with Hayabusa 1300 or GSX-R 750 engine
A Mini with a Celica GT4's 2.0 turbo and 4wd drivetrain and suspension?
@@EmyrDerfel too heavy drivetrain for such a light car. A mini can weight in at aroung 1050 pounds or 460kg so a motorcycle engine is really good. Plus they have an insane power to displacement ratio.
@@hagglundguy Look up Project Binky, they've almost finished it.
