- FDNY Squad Company 18 is a 2013 m Attacker with a Squad Body on the back. It has a 1,000gpm & 500 gal water tank. There are a total of 8 Squad Companies in the FDNY. Squads respond as engine companies for their first, second and third due areas with the exception of Squad 8, Squad 18 & Squad 41 only have first and second due boxes. Responding as a Engine they go to ordinary engine company calls such as CFR Calls, Fire Alarms, Car Fires, CO and Gas Calls. When they respond as a squad they go to Confirmed Fires, Tech Rescues, Water Rescues, Subway Emergencies, Collapse, Confirmed Space, High Angel and other rescue type incidents. Basically a Squad Company can do everything a Rescue company can do with the exception of not having all the rescue company equipment and they do not do water rescue diving. Squad Companies are unique because they have the ability to be a Engine Company and have all the tools that a Truck Company has so they can operate as a truck company. All Squad Company members are Rescue Tech Level II & Hazmat Tech Level II. They go through over 300 hours of training. Squad Companies can get assigned to Hazmat Calls as a Hazmat Tech Company to assist Hazmat Company 1 on scene.

Even though I’m a self proclaimed fire buff, I never understood what made a FDNY squad different than and engine company, thanks for clarifying it.
Awesome!
Remember the squad as well as rescue companies are under the special operations command
@@peterkneissl3358 didn’t know that either, thanks!
These squads are awesome. They fill so many needs. Very sensible as one would expect from the FDNY.
For sure
@dawnmichelleseidlgodsey120 yup
All your videos are great, but this one was awesome! I always wondered what equipment was on the Squads and you gave a great video tour. I am blown away by how much equipment they can pack on an engine body. 😆 Thanks for an excellent, very detailed tour and explanation. An A+ video all the way! 👍🏼
Thanks!
Thanks again. I really love seeing each Fleet Friday. Luckily, there are plenty of rig types left.
You bet!
THANK YOU BROTHER ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! APPRECIATE YOUR WORK ! 🇺🇸
Much appreciated
These are some thing I thought no one would ever get the access to show, and this level of detail is very impressive. I look forward to all of your videos specifically Fleet Friday..
Thanks for watching
Thank You very much. I always saw the Squad pumpers but never really knew the reason or idea of why they were called Squads. 👍👍
Absolutely love Fleet Friday!! Thank you.
Us too!
I’m loving these Fleet Fridays.
Great! Me too!
Just missing a raft and dive gear, and the Rescue can take a hike. Loved it Skyler! Worth the wait! Thanks!! 👍👍🇺🇸😁
They have water rescue suites they just can’t dive. Boat is on 2nd Piece
thank u for the great info
You bet!
Thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing the 2nd piece.
Coming soon!
Thanks for the look see into the squad companies. Great video as always. Can’t wait to see the second piece. Always look forward to fleet Friday.
Thanks
Again Thank you so much 😊 my FDNY information walk through Friend 😊 you get an A+ from me. I Love how they have many cheat sheets to help them refresh their memory for all the many different special calls outs that they go on. Those little pieces of Laminate paper sheets are so so important for reference tools 😊
Thank you for highlighting FDNY Squad 18. My Co. in P.G. County, MD is Co. 18. We have 2 pumpers one used to be set up as Squad pumper, we also have a heavy duty Rescue Squad, and a tower lagger. At 75 most of my FD work is now memories. Thank you again for fleet Friday highlighting 18
Thanks for the info
Always wondered what the purpose of the Squads were. Great job explaining.
Thx
Skyler, thank u so much for doing these fire videos..myself and my family are huge fans of you and JJ and we watch your coverage of a fire and then watch the same fire from JJ's coverage...you both do such an amazing job putting these videos out of all these fires in such cold and wet conditions...as I commented on JJ's channel, PLEASE be safe and please be careful...please make sure to wear the proper clothing to keep your hands, your feet and yourself warm and dry!! Thank you again from some of your biggest fans
Thanks much appreciated!
Thank you be safe
Thanks
Just met a retired captain. from Squad 270 ...... very interesting video as usual ...
Thanks
Thank you so much for the walk thought of the ( SQUAD) companies of the wonderful Engine 🚒😊 I like how they use wooden WEDGES on the rear hose beds. The Drivers compartment has HOSE pressure cheat sheets on the compartment door. For ME personally it was always hard to figure in my head
( Fiction LOSS) when I was a new Explorer Scout with the Fire Post I belong to. I bought a book on Friction Loss learning
I was so confused. I talked to a long time Driver/service Driver, and he told me don't confuse yourself with memory, learning all that in your head. 😊 This long time PAYED FF was a great guy, always funny and a great teacher to us Young Fire Exploring scouts. I had just started being a ( Resident FF) at the main station. We did weekend Dispatch duties before we had ( 911) call centers. We still had 7 regular calls to different Fire Districts.
Great Video thank you for your time and information
My pleasure!
Very in depth video, love the fact they can run as a squad or engine company. That's dope
No doubt!
@@SkylerFire if you’re ever in London, come by Shoreditch Fire Station 👊🏾
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Great coverage of what a Squad covers. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video as always! I love how in-depth it is with even all the smaller of the tools. It’s amazing how under looked squad company is to the untrained eye. I always thought that heavy rescue companies only did the most of the tool carrying and what not but squads seem to be the work horses of the FDNY. That is for the crazy calls. All things considered there’s more squads than there are rescues. This video gave me a lot of insight of the type of calls they would have to respond to. Thank you so much for all these great videos. They really are great entertainment for fire buffs.
PS will you do a video on a USAR Taskforce rig? That would be so cool since they’re such huge caches. Thanks!
Thanks glad it can help! I never thought about it and will have to look into it
Thanks I hope you do one!
Thank you skyler and be safe
Thanks
Well done Skyler. Thanks again.
Thx
Thanks For The Walk-around Of Squad Company 18
Thanks
A total KICK ASS RIG!! FDNY PROWESS & POWER AT ITS BEST. Thanks Skyler.
Thx
Great video
Man that truck had some pile of gear
You got that right! Thanks for watching
Second piece. That just answered what I was going to ask. Can't wait.
Hahahah
Not a bit of waisted space. I love seeing this stuff.
When you cover Manhattan that’s for sure
Very good!
Thanks!
Oh man, I'm so excited to have seen this, I appreciate it so much.
Any time!
Skyler, Great video walk around! Squad , the FDNY version of the "Swiss Army Knife"! I have seen alot of different Squad companies, in different parts of the country! But FDNY's Squads have to be the Heavyest of all! The next thing is going to need is a tandem rear axle! Very 😎 cool. 👍👍👍2N2
For sure thanks
I have to agree - my volunteer company had a Rescue with much of the gear minus of course the engine gear, before it was replaced the chassis dropped 16 inches, the one that replaced it had a heavier GRW, I’m now retired they just specked out the newest Rescue with a tandem axle. What an impressive setup the FDNY has.
This company is all business
Truly a jack of all trades! Awesome video have a merry Christmas 🎄🎁!
Thanks same to you!
Love your videos and your accent is badass.
Glad you enjoy it!
Are you the community representative for NYFD? You know apparatus up and down in and out! Much respect!
I do not work for the FDNY. I just document and support the best Fire Dept in the world!
Hi Skyler! Thanks so much for review! I like Squad 18! 👍🚒 Can you make a video about 2nd piece too please?
If you watched the video I answered that
@@SkylerFire Oh ok :) I can't wait! Thanks so much Skyler
Wait for a great Fleet friday video with rescue 1💪
We will see
Absolutely phenomenal great video Squad companies are awesome I love them was assigned to one also my assignment was in New Jersey thanks again keep up the good work I tell you what would be nice if we could find out where we get official Squad 18 T-shirts from FDNY right from the station thanks appreciate it and God bless
Rescue 4 ? That’ll be a nice video. Great work btw
Not sure we will see
Can’t wait for rescue 1/2
We will see
@@SkylerFire hazmat?
Thank you, I always wondered what the difference was between and engine company and a squad.I
Happy to help!
That was an amazing tour of squad 18 by any chance could you maybe do hazmat if you can
Possible
So Squad guys are basically Rescue that arrives in an engine... so Squad guys are heavy hitters
Well they will operate as an engine first.
That seems very similar to engine crews in the UK would be doing
Ok
Not really. The UK Fire and Rescue Service operates and is organised very differently. Due to different risks and construction principals. We also have smaller water mains. The UK extinguishes on High Pressure Hosereels for most routine fires.
It also has far stricter national standard operating procedures with the use of Breathing Apparatus. Also our hose couplings are instantaneous an an appliance in Edinburgh can provide a water supply to appliance from London. A separate Ambulance Service handles medical emergencies although the UK Fire Service has better medical training they’re not EMT or paramedic trained and certainly wouldn’t be allowed to
administer narcan but work closely before with the Ambulance Service due to it being ran off its feet.
SCUBA is handled by the Police in the UK and is viewed more as a recovery rather than rescue effort
In a nutshell the UK doesn’t operate on a Truck and Engine Basis. Generally Pump Crews (similar to engines) known as Pumping Appliances or Pumps handle most incidents and are supported by ‘specialist appliances’ which provide unique capabilities such as Rescue, Aerial, HAZMAT, High Volune Pumping, Water Rescue USAR. They are predominately geared towards structure fires but carry kit for routine non fire calls.
Although UK Pumping Appliances look the same they generally have a fairly standard equipment load out although some of it varies depending on the risks and budget of the Brigade. They don’t carry big ventilation saws if this is required this is done by a USAR Unit or Rescue Unit. Same with Rope Rescue. They can handle Auto Extrication, bank based water rescue or flood wading, rescue at height using ground ladders (10.5m and 13.5m). They carry some airbags and cribbing but only for a light vehicle. They are generally closer to an Engine Company in US terms.
Some Brigades operate Heavy Rescue Pumps which are similar to squad companies as they operate additional mainly Road Traffic Collision (RTC) Rescue gear for incidents which regular pumps may not be equipped for such as LGV but they’re not as comprehensively equipped as an FDNY squad due to space.
London which is the most comparable to FDNY has fourteen Fire Rescue Units similar to FDNY Rescue Companies. Each has a standard set of skills but several specialise in Advanced Rope Ops, several do USAR/Water/Rope Ops, and others do Water/Large Animal and HAZMAT support. LFB also has a dedicated CBRN unit known as a Rapid Response Team. UK USAR is equipped to national standards including LFB with funding, kit equipment and training issued by HM Government.
London only has eleven Aerial Appliances but they provide working at height/water tower capability with a crew of two only. Any heavy ventilation tactics would be handled by a Pump or Rescue Unit crew operating from the cage using their own tools and equipment. These are mobilised on request or as part of a specific pre determined attendance. They’re not genetically on all building fire calls like in the US.
🤘
Thx
Awesome as always; probably super obvious, what are the gun slingers?
For confined space, the escape bottle usually kept on the hip
@@SkylerFire Very cool. A very technical question, on the front bumper, is the right side hose outlet opened & closed from the pump panel?
Great video as always. Why was there door/sprinkler wedgies in the hose?
I prefer rescue over squad
Thx for watching
Great video, Skyler! Want to ask why a special kit for manhole rescue, would that not be considered confined space?
It was supplied by the gas company (Con Ed)
With over 4000 calls a year, I’d love to know how many miles that truck has on it?
With that, how often do they get new/replacement trucks given how busy it is?
10 years but they are running late another 2 years or so
Also did you say they carry a ticket book? like for parking tickets?
All firefighters are peace officers so they are able to write parking tickets and building tickets
Why does squad 8 respond differently on 1st, 2nd and 3rd due assignments?
SQ8 responds as an Engine for 1st and 2nd Due… 3rd due area covers most of Staten Island so to keep them as a squad they took it away so SQ1 doesn’t have to come in all the time
That Makes sense. I figured it had to do with being on Staten Island. @@SkylerFire
Does squad 18 respond into Harlem?
Negative
could u do a video on the fire marshals truck
Maybe
What's with the wedges in the hose bed? Is that marking the end of the lengths?
How much to grab off
First comment of the Friday!
Awesome
Are the car spare tire/donut spares for the traditional use or something else?
They have the Grip hoist cables inside
Wish u added the 2nd peace into the video. unless that next weeks
If you watched the video I answered that
@@SkylerFire i did just would of nice see walk round that vehicle too.
Is all good. love the videos
What’s the chocks in the hose bed for?
Shoring, collapse, subway, a lot of stuff
What brand flash lights are on the rigs
Stream light
heard the FDNY is switching from Scotts to Drager
Not 100% yet
It’s not happening
A tool chest with license plates.
Thanks for watching
When are the new Squads coming and are they generally the same? Will need to do a video on the new ones
2 years out and probably not
Can you define "Custodial" hydrant wrench?
It is magnetic and a lock so you can’t open a hydrant with a regular hydrant wrench.
Nice video but where is the real siren the Q2B 😅
Will be on new rig
@@SkylerFire thanks for the info
Squad eight HAZMAT tech second piece
Squad 18.
WHat is CFRD?
Certified First Responder Defibrillator
Are you an active firefighter or public relations ?
No I am not
Why does 18 and 8 never relocate? Like the others
Squad 18 covers Manhattan.
Squad 8 covers Staten Island.
Both Boros only have 1 squad
What is IN the man in machine box?
Extraction of somebody stuck In industrial machine for example arm stuck in cardboard bailer
For someone’s stuck in a machine lol
I understand what it’s used for 🤦. What is IN the kit was my question?
@robertschultz6922 Ours carries tools to determine how much of the victim is trapped. A selection of tools to remove machinery parts or to cut them free. It's meant to be the first in tool kit, while a larger kit follows.
@@mndew620 very cool! We don’t have anything like that here. Our rescue just has normal cutting tools. Maybe we should create something like this.
Why does FDNY still use 10 codes, especially when the officer needs a cheat sheet to remember them all? I know that that FEMA's NIMS standard has phased out 10 codes for public safety and doesn't recommend their use to improve interoperability.
10 codes go back in the FDNY so long. Every company has the sheet there…. It’s so you don’t make a mistake…. Over 60 codes
We know that you don’t make department policy, but with all the codes and sub codes, it goes back to what the original comment stated to make it easier. And if you need a cheat sheet so you don’t make mistakes, then dispatch needs a cheat sheet to interpret what they were just told by the officer, go to plain text. That being said……..thanks for your videos!!!! It is interesting to see how the FDNY operates….!!! Somewhere, where there is always something going on.
There isn't as many 10 codes as it looks like. All the important ones are easy to remember. It cuts down on traffic for simple jobs and for complex responses you can just call a 10 code like a 10-60 with a pre determined response, instead of listing off every single unit you need (10-60 for a major emergency like a collapse brings 5 engines, 1 HMTU engine, 4 ladders, 1 SOC support ladder, 4 battalions, the rescue battalion, the safety battalion, 1 division, 2 rescues, 1 squad, 1 collapse rescue, 1 tac support unit, 1 hazmat, the SOC logistics unit, the SOC compressor unit, a vac truck, a RAC unit, the field comm unit & EMS rescue/haztac resources).
what is FDNY UNILT IS FLEET FRIDAY ON FRIDAY JAUNARY 19 2024
You will have to wait and see….
Only 1000 GPM?
Yes normal engines are 2k
@@SkylerFire I’m surprised not even a 1500
FDNY runs all engines and squads with high pressure pumps because the city has high pressure hydrants
I never understood why squads don’t use the aerial with a pump and tank. Out here in the west almost all ladders have a pump and water tank. I don’t like it but it’s what we use. If the squad has both companies tools then why not have the aerial for truck companies?
mobility
That would be a quint and they wouldn’t fit
Amazing amount of equipment on that Apparatus. I've wanted to see a FDNY Squad. Thanks Skyler.
@@SkylerFire interesting, wouldn’t a quint be the same height as a TDA, or a platform? Out here we use 4WD which adds several inches to the already large height so we build the stations on the larger side to start with
@@kevinhouse1960 I’d like to see what is in a collapse unit. Actually I can’t wait till next week either, I have always wanted to see a detail look at the squads and rescues second piece!!! These are such amazing videos. I am so glad to have found this channel!
I'm no firefighter, but why are your trucks so dirty, inside and out. Typically, fire trucks are polished daily. I suspect your call volume of 4000 calls a year probably has something to do with it...
Not a Volly department. These rigs see work daily
NarCAINE??
Narcan
