Its not at all surprising if you understand nature and any organisms instincts. "Good" or "nice" are no more considerations to any entities basic survival instincts, than say "evil" or "mean" is. As sperm, we competed with ( i cant remember if the number is hundreds, thousands, or millions of potential brothers and sisters with only our own survival as the driving element.
I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh at 1:13 at how the mother is sitting on the nest and the cuckoo is attempting to push the other baby out... so sad but the mother is like: what the hecc??
Most had never had a cuckoo before, there is hardly an instinct, as they are at the mercy of cuckoos. They are too small to lift the eggs out, and won't abandon the nest until the fledgling leaves, which could overwork the parents of the sacrificed eggs.
I guess the only reasons the mama bird doesnt reject the cuckoo bird is that it 1. Doesnt see that its a different species of bird 2. Most animals prefer the strongest and biggest of their offspring anyways, so they think that this bird is just really strong and has good DNA so they proceed to feed it. I think even when the siblings would stay in the nest, they would feed the biggest one (the one hatching first) the most.

Watched a video earlier where a cuckoo chick pushed all of the eggs out of the nest and the parents of the eggs kept feeding the chick bc they were stupid and thought it was theirs and all it did was cry for food. With as much as the chick ate it was fully grown in 2weeks and sat on the nest barely able to stay on. Cuckoo's are some lazy, conniving birds that just drop their eggs off to another nest and then their homicidal kid starts taking out the competition. It crazy how they know what to do once hatched!

Johnny Tang Cuckoos are amazing. They’re migratory birds. So not only are they born with the instinct to eliminate the other chicks, but they also have the instinct to fly to the right place in the winter. Even if it’s raised by migratory birds that go somewhere else, the cuckoo will know that it’s not like them and travel the right migratory pattern to keep warm.
What a bully! Just noticed the one remaining egg had a hole pecked in it - cuckoo must sense that since he's not devoting any energy to ejecting it. I like how the cuckoo accidentally pulls the smaller bird back in the nest right as he's almost successful in pushing him over! Very doubtful the little bird survived, but hopefully he gave the cuckoo as much trouble as possible.

The B Fam Cuckoos are really clever birds. A mother cuckoo will wait until another bird leaves its nest and quickly lay its egg and steal one of the original eggs. Most birds can’t tell their eggs apart from the cuckoos. It frees up the parents to focus on catching food for themselves to bulk up for their migration instead of feeding their young.

A cuckoo is born not only with the instinct to eliminate competition, but they also know when and where to migrate even though most of them will never see another bird of their species until they are adults. It you take a step back and stop trying to judge a baby chick for trying to survive, it’s actually super impressive.

A parasite can never wipe put a species, because otherwise it would starve as well and that's why a predator-food relationship can never be broken. Nature keeps itself at balance. Also the "let them do what they do" argument applies because these are animals trying to survive by using others, in the end it's still the same as a bird eating a worm. Also humans hunt animals because they want to keep them at check, bringing imbalance because humans are the ones that are overpopulating. This is the reason why the global state is in danger. Not saying that I dislike humans, but your judge animals by humans standard doesn't work if humans have a different system and relationship to bacterias.
