    If i had a nest with a cuckoo egg, id take the cuckoo out and hand raise it so the other bird babies could still live and the cuckoo still lives too. Its a win win, and when the cuckoo is grown it would just be a pet so it doesn’t deposit its own eggs in anyone else’s nests.
    Would also be interesting to see a nest with all cuckoo babies and see them fight to kick each other out lol.

      It depends on the area. In some places, brood parasites are invasive species and they’re damaging to local ecosystems. Maybe there’s a case for hunting them then. In other places, they’re just part of the natural order of things. You say brood parasitism is new, but you gotta put that into perspective. Aristotle wrote about cuckoos killing their host’s offspring. “New” still means thousands of years old. There are lots of species and individual birds that are more than capable of rejecting the eggs of brood parasites. Cuckoos have built up a tolerance for the toxins and spines of caterpillars that can kill other birds and function as pests on crops and trees. For example, in New England, the North American cuckoo is one of the only things that can eat gypsy moth caterpillars (an invasive species that devastates native flora). And most cuckoos are actually really important for controlling moth populations.

      @elijahculper5522 4 года назад +6

      They do sometimes make their own nests. But the nests don’t tend to be very good. Some species of cuckoos only sometimes engage in brood parasitism, and others always make their own nests. In both cases, the nests have a tendency to be flimsy. They’re easily dislodged from trees or collapsed under the weight of their inhabitants. Cuckoos just aren’t great builders. They also have to contend with the fact that male cuckoos are deadbeats. Unlike a lot of other songbirds, cuckoos don’t stick with one partner for an entire season and males aren’t interested in being active parents. That means a female cuckoo has to find all of the food to feed her young and can’t spend much time protecting her nest. Also, most cuckoos are migratory. A few months after fledging, they’ll have to fly thousands of miles. Cuckoo migratory patterns are grueling. They often include long stints over terrains that don’t provide them with opportunities to feed-the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or open ocean in the South Pacific. They need a ton of food to build up muscle mass and fat reserves before that journey in order to survive. And one way they manage that is by killing off broodmates and convincing other birds to feed them. The species that have the most difficult migratory patterns tend to also be the ones who rely more heavily on brood parasitism.
      None of that is to say that chicks raised in a nest built by a single mother cuckoo are doomed. There’s ample evidence of such birds surviving their first winter. But they have a much better chance of survival if they take over the nest of another bird, so that’s what most of them do if they can. And that’s the trait that natural selection has pushed for thousands of years.

In that time the parents basically show them how to get their own food and survive outside the nest. The family may split up around when it's time to migrate although many birds will still come back to the same areas so the birds nesting in the area next season might actually be some of the offspring.

      Cuckoo's usually has a specific set of bird species that it preys upon. Most birds will notice if a egg is not the same color or size as their own. So different Cuckoo has different color and size of their eggs to match whatever bird they are parasiting on.

    Could you cause a cuckoo bird to exhaust itself to death by placing (and replacing) marbles in the nest?

    • @dharmallars
      @dharmallars 2 года назад

      Probably. From what I’ve read the cuckoo hatchlings do this because their nerves on their back are highly sensitive and so anything touching their back they’ll try to push away. They don’t know it’s an egg so they wouldn’t know it’s a marble instead.

You no longer think how to do the feat, you just do it. That's why people who are not used to keyboards type so slow. Their not used to keyboards so they have to "think" what to type. Which is really slow.
      Think how you are breathing, now think how you are blinking your eyes. Then think how your arms feel, how your legs feel, how your head feel, how your tongue feel. All of that is instinctual. You can hardly focus on more then 2 of those at once.
