I prayed really hard after getting a horrible, terminal disease, and then I died. But does anyone ever hear about my story? And the story of millions of people like me? No. Because we're DEAD.

why did she go to the doctor in the first place? all believers with serious diseases should stay at home and pray for the miracle cure...

Wow, as an atheist I have to grudgingly admit that this god certainly did work a miracle of healing on this woman. He mysteriously allowed her to get ill in the first place so that he could then do absolutely NOTHING AT ALL in order for the SURGERY and the MEDICATION to actually make this woman healthy again. And all he wanted in return was just the credit.

Reminds me of a comic where a mom and a dad are waiting outside a surgery room and a doctor walks out. The doctor says "the surgery was a success. Your son is going to live!"
"It's a miracle! Praise God for saving our son!"
"However, there was a complication and he won't be able to walk again."
      "We're suing!"

I once got on my knees and prayed with all my heart and soul begging God to give me a sign. Something, anything to show he was really there. I got nothing. At that point my already barely existing faith died. And frankly I wasn’t sad. I was happy. I was happy that I learned something new.

  • @spaveevo

God saves the people that live but hes not responsible for people who die. The ones who live say all credit to God and the ones who die say...............nothing.
think about that for a minute.

Would those that lived even survive without the treatment they received? So if they didn't get that treatment and died..God wouldn't care for them either huh? Meaning when you are sick you still equal in his eyes..but only if you survived were you truly favored to continue living..but if there are those favored by god how would we know?..why are people then born believing the faith still condemned to death?..If a theist believes God is the reason for everything, is he not also the reason for the sickness? Therefore it was god's doing to get you sick in the 1st place...and if you survive the sickness give all praise and glory to him...they would probably want to say now god works in mysterious ways...honestly I don't see what is so mysterious to see god as an asshole...but oh well...everyone needs their high...Potheads need weed, Drunks need alcohol, athletes need exercise, scientists need knowledge..and theists need God..smh

rainbow20112011 Sorry that was really a bunch of thoughts put together now that I reread it...but long story put into a nutshell..is that theists believe god is the reason for everything..thus he is also the reason for the illness...which would make theists' "faith" contradictory...if they pray for god to undo the illness...and if it is his plan to poison his own believers so they can pray to him for the antidote..he is not working in "mysterious" ways... He is just an asshole

She's also overlooking the fact that there are just as many people who practise other religions, who worship other gods, who claim to have had the same experience - being diagnosed as terminally ill, praying to Allah/Buddah/Kanesh etc, and then suddenly "miraculously" getting better. These people then make the exact same claims this caller is making - that this is proof of their god's existence.
There are also just as many Atheists who get diagnosed as terminally ill and then manage to recover - they obviously just don't attribute it to any supernatural nonsense like a "god".
The reality is that out of 7 billion people on the planet, a significan number of millions will get life-threatening illnesses that only stand a 1 in a million chance of getting better - but for every million that doesn't, there will be one that does. These few survivors - if they're religious - will put this down to their god, and declare it as proof of their religion being the correct one. These people don't understand the laws of averages, they think because something incredibly improbable happened to them, that it must be supernatural because it's "too much coincidence" - it doesn't occur to these people that when there are billions of people in existence the improbable things will eventually happen to someone. That's not "coincidence", it's called mathematics. It'd actually be spookier if these things never happened to anyone.

I just want to add to what Karyn said: so true about other christians not surviving "fatal" diseases, but it's also true that people of other religions and even atheists survive at similar rates. My grandfather was an atheist and his doctors gave him 6 months to live and said he would never walk again. A year and a half later he re wired my Trans Am. His remission eventually ended and he did die, but it was more than 5 years after the expected date and he was walking for most of that time.

She actually has learning difficulties and its when you try and explain atheist principles and empirical evidence to somebody with cognitive impairment, you realise just how tightly christianity especially has plugged the holes. There is a very basic, simplistic argument for EVERYthing - I knew that logically, but to actually see it utilised right at thumbscrew level is pretty scary. This person has no choice, but for those who just don't want to think its perfect. Shudder....

In biblical times, people would have said she was possessed by demons. They would have prayed for the demons to leave the body, but she would probably have died because "god had other plans".
In today's world, she had brain surgery (twice) and survived her cancer, but only survived because people prayed for her.
Logic has no meaning to these people.

Prayer is pointless. Since God is omniscient then he knows everything and since he gave us free will he is precluded from interfering in our lives lest he influence our free will. If you break your leg and pray to God to heal you God already knows if he will heal it. So your prayer is pointless. If he knows that he will not heal it then the prayer is equally pointless. If God can be influenced by prayer then he is not immutable.

Whenever healing from faith comes up I'm reminded of the story of two attendees at a holy-roller preacher's healing event. Jim on crutches and Brian with a stammer are picked out for the treatment. After much praying and associated mumbo-jumbo they are sent behind a screen. The 'healer' calls to them to pray very hard then tells Jim to cast aside his crutches. Then tells Brian to 'speak to us. And Brian replies 'Jim's f-f-f-fallen over.'

So, my dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the late 80s. He was a very faithful person and was an absolute solid believer. I'm sure he prayed to god to overcome his medical issue. And by a "miracle" , he did. The operation was a success. Some would likely argue that god saved him.
But the story doesn't end there.
He had to have a blood transfusion. He got bad blood. Then died from HIV in 1989. Did god save him from his brain tumor only to give him HIV and kill him? He left three very young children behind, and a wife that also believed in god.
Point is, god doesn't do anything because god isn't real. My dad had a successful brain operation, but had the shit circumstance of getting bad blood in an era where blood wasn't tested for HIV.

@CalumGilhooly Prayer does give comfort, there's no denying it. But if you had to choose between a life saving surgery by a medical expert, or 10 hours of intense praying by an evangelical minister, it becomes a no brainer.
God is the last refuge, the last hope of being physically saved, and least useful at that point
    (probably more painful too)

They shouldn't have asked for just something to happen. This is what reinforces believers' beliefs: they ask for something to happen, and then just three days later, they get email from someone they hadn't thought about for a long time!
Instead, they should ask for something specific, and something that chance couldn't provide. "God, if you're out there, please put $50,000 on the table in front of me so that I can donate it to charity."

As I don't have access to this caller's medical history, I have minimal info with which to speculate the nature of the condition resulting in brain surgery. However, as an RN with nearly 20yrs practice, primarily in neurology, I can say that the cortisone the caller recieved is intended to decrease cerebral edema (brain swelling) post-op. Patients are tapered off the med as they recover. Use "for life" is virtually unheard of.

As a firm believer, I used to pray and beg God to take away the pain, and let me feel better. As I'm sure you can guess... Nothing! Eventually, I 'lost my faith' and got proper treatment for my illness. If God exists, he's the sort of creep who likes torturing children

I would suggest Simon Greenleaf, he was the greatest authorities of evidence on ancient History. He was asked to put Jesus Christ to a test, reviewed all the testimonies and all the facts and discarded everything that was inadmissable. Based upon the evidence, he said that the resurrection is established as any event you could ever find in History or any man like Columbus, Caesar and Aristotle in the history books.

But I didn't say "forced", I said "brought up". What I mean by that is that they were raised with the belief. In other words, would you believe in God if your family hadn't taught you about him?
Yeah, yeah, I know some people find him in other ways, but that is out of this context, I am talking right now about how religious people are raised.

This mouse was left to decay in the open air. A few weeks passed, all that was left were a few white bone fragments. Nine weeks later which was by now mid spring some samples of recently appearing plants were tested from the same area...guess what? indeed..part of the mouse was now part of these plants.

@Eskara0 I completely support the right for anyone to believe any idea, no matter how absurd it may be. This is a basic human right.
I also completely support the right for people to debunk, ridicule, and/or dismiss those ideas. This is totally necessary to insure the validity of ideas. It's how we grow our understanding.
Without these rights, we would forever be children, stuck in a world of make-believe fantasies that children so enjoy. If we are to grow, we MUST challenge bad ideas.

I just love the idea that "God won't appear because it would be a spectacle"... yet supposedly this same deity being born of a virgin, feeding 5,000 with a single fish, turning water into wine, raising the dead, attacking a temple, getting nailed to a cross, and raising from the dead along with all the other dead people in town is... what exactly?
The ability of people to ignore one set of nonsense in favor of another set of nonsense and still believe both at the same time is mind boggling.

That's the Christian mind for you. They tell you to prey to God. When you tell them that you already did, they tell you to mean it. When you tell them that you meant it, they tell you that you must've been insincere. This shit never ends. I was a Christian for 18 years. I prayed MANY times for God to give me a sign & I really meant it. I was in that loving & accepting state when I prayed. You know what I got? NOTHING! It is amazing how, when we have all these miraculous reports, but whenever we try to test them, they appear, to be false, but yet this god is personal and wanting a relationship, but the deceptiveness in its miracles, which if demonstrated, would save many souls, and the world would change for the better, if such could be demonstrated, are hidden to mislead its creation, to show it wants us not to believe.

Just point to the plethora of examples of suffering and unanswered prayer around the world. At that point he might either renounce belief or reject glorifying a god that allows for suffering. Either way you will have succeeded to a degree. That should give you the best chance at breaking his faith in god in a diplomatic way that allows for him to put two and two together on his own.

Actually, an eternity seems equally bad for me on either side, regardless where I go. And I think that faith is the death of reason, and reason is the main thing that distinguishes us as humans. Why would God want us to dismiss that main "gift" that he gave us?
"I will provide you with the ability to reason and to question, BUT DON'T YOU DARE QUESTION ME."

Funny how these stories seem to morph when people are pinned down. I had a comment debate with a guy who claimed a "personal experience". When I suggested he might have misinterpreted it, the experience became (literally) that god took him on a 1.5 hour tour of heaven. When I suggested that he might be delusional, he no, there were 100 fellow parishioners there with him who confirm it. Of course, when I asked how he could be sure god was the source of this experience, he "just knew".

My whole point was that faith does not require evidence, and I understood that you meant the opposite, I apologize for the misunderstanding.
I don't imply that in order to trust something you need (according to the definition) evidence, all I'm saying is that we shouldn't trust things blindly. Pretty much, we shouldn't have faith in anything, but instead trust people/things based on reliable evidence.
