agreeing & i love your videos Chris! I wish I could meet you. Love the animal impressions.
chris you gots to be in one of these
Bertie Gilbert Films Well, now he is!
aw
I read this in his voice. And I agree with Bertie, he should be in more!!
Thanks for the awesome comments! here's a podcast of me discussing some of the symbolism if you're interested - soundcloud.com/bertiegilbert/talking-about-killed-the-cat
Wooow I got it all wrong. I thought both Bertie and Rico were in her head, Bertie being childhood and Rico teenagehood. As childhood passes, teenagehood slowly takes its place, being all mean and irrational... But this is such a cool film you guys! Bravo!!
I would really love a film commentary from you!! It'll be awesome , can't wait:)
would you actually plan on making a longer like realish movie sorry I'm tired and my grammar is horrible
ɷɷ I Havee Watchedddd Thisss Moviee Leakeddd Versionn Hereee : - t.co/e6QlTccFx6
Wow. Just wow. This was great. Rico is the most manipulative, disgusting character! Eugh, portrayed so well. Loved everything about this. Where was this filmed?! It's beautiful!
Brilliant work Bertie :)
'electronic post-pop scream rap' twenty one pilots?
Slightly Spicy Salsa I THOUGHT THE SAMEE
yaaassss finallly a genre that fits their songs!
I am severely bothered that he does not have millions of subscribers and views because this is gold.
i know this is probably bad but I'm glad he doesn't have millions of subscribers because then people wouldn't understand the deepness and the true value of his videos. everyone doesn't have gold because it's so rare and valuable and his videos are just like that. If everyone had gold we would treat it like copper.
+PROTIP atTheDisco I guess what I'm saying... idk if only we lived in a world where this would be better understood by everyone. if everyone took a second to contemplate more deeply.
I was wondering the whole way through about how this linked to the title, but then at the end I got it, so so clever Bertie
i didn't get it, can you explain?
There's a saying that goes: "curiosity killed the cat" basically... Google what it means if you want :)
omg how could you not get it in the first 5 seconds...
hellotwat HEY! Don't be a meanie!!
hellotwat
Sorry I'm not english I didn't know the saying
CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT!
curiosity was written on the book that the girl dropped. The psychologist drew a dead cat.
Bertie died.
BERTIE IS THE CAT!
I GET IT
• PUREOXIDE • okay, okay, but why is Bertie the cat??
FruitieTootie I think he's the cat because he disobeyed Rico and went swimming. He wanted to see if he could make his own decisions but he died trying. But thinking about it this plot is too simple....
• PUREOXIDE • I think it was less that John disobeyed Rico by going swimming, and more that they left the facility in the first place, because they were curious about what it would be like to be free. But in the end, being free just lead to disaster, and ended up killing him.
I have a theory that the two others aren't real. That they are two sides of Alia's conscious. She left on her own and the person talking to her knows that there weren't two others, so he writes down "bullshit" on the paper.
I always believe that too. I love this short because it is open for interpretation. I interpreted that the girl maybe did some of the things that Rico did and got sent back. so like you said, he knew that she was lying so he put "Bullshit".
I love this, one of my favourite's but I still feel like Alia's acting is a bit rigid. I don't know if I feel like he's trying too hard or something, kinda ruins it for me but I loved everything else.
So here's my take of the film. Rico, John, and Rainy were three people that escaped a mental ward. The entire film is a visualization of the story that Rainy is telling the therapist. Now the main reason that Rainy is being interviewed is not because she escaped, but because John has disappeared, probably killed by Rico who is obviously a psychopath. However, since Rainy is in fact a mental patient here entire story is probably, like the film said, "bullshit". Her story can't be trusted. That's why the film has events happen that are too good to be true and why some things in the film are just weird as shit. So basically, I don't think anything in this film actually happened, it's just a cover up story behind John's death.
I don't understand, I'm scared, I'm sad, I'm crying, I'm laughing, please explain these emotions you're giving me
Also the characters reminded me of Noodle, Murdoc, and 2D, not gonna lie
I like this and I like Alia. I love how many of the cuts are so sudden and that they feel (almost) misplaced. Chopping off the end of a sentence with a cut is a very clever way to get your audience to think; if you can make your audience assume what a character will say next then it doesn't need to be said because the viewer has already filled that gap in their mind. Cutting away before then throws the viewer off a bit and causes them to consciously think about the film and the character, considering what the character would have said and making them think about the character in more depth than any dialogue could. You and Alia handled this brilliantly, I love it!
As usual lovely, serene, abstract visuals and a great cast of characters. 'Tick Where It Hurts' is still my favourite, but this comes a close second!
I listened to the podcast where he discussed this but didnt exactly understand all of it. So what I'm thinking is that everything that happened is really just a story that she made up to represent her life. At first she left the facility like she left her friends, then she dropped her curiosity like the book (she didn't even read), then the parties, and then her brother died while she was away just like her dad died while she was at a party. I don't think that rico or her brother were real, which is why the therapist writes bullshit bc there werent any other patients that went missing, just people she made up. In the end, her returning to the facility is her being done with parties and just wanting to be home.
Halfway through: this is weird... I LOVE IT
It had great depth to it Bertie. The story was an interesting one in the way it was told and I liked that. Gave it a sense of personality. Very much so reminded me of The Great Gatsby for it's partying, drinking, selfishness and charm I really think this has nice shots and you'll always be able to recognise your films now as you use very similar shots which I like because it shows recognition!
well done dude :-)
very interesting comparison! i would've never thought of that.
***** thanks re- watch it that's what I did then I got much more of an understanding.
really? because the whole thing just feels like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or maybe thats too obvious
He wasn't the cinemotographer, but his films do still have an unique style that i really love.
I love this Bertie, especially the quote: 'I've always had a weakness for pursuing things.' It's my favourite so far! The performances/characters are so eccentric, Alia and Hannah's acting is sublime! This film, looks at teens differently in a non-normal non-idealistic kind of way - it's a pleasant juxtaposition from your other films. Not to say that this film was any better due to the fact that it was being funded, but my god, this is something else. Oh and the story line, oh the story line! It brings up the mental health of teens and the yearn for acceptance (even though it might be a little bit exaggerated) in a comical, modern, 'indie-film' kind of way! When you're big and famous, the next Wes Anderson, but in your own right, I can't wait to say: 'I guess I watched the progression from one film to another, which meant the growth of you as a filmmaker.' I praise you for making these films, because it's what I'd love to be doing, it's sort of a goal, a voice saying: 'you've got ideas, he had ideas, he's only a year older than you and look what he's achieved, that could be you someday.' So thank you, immensely, Bertie. I hope you read this, and take it in as I take in every one of your vast and varying films. It'd be amazing, to hear a 'The Making Of' this film too! CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT
but satisfaction brought it back. ;)

THANK YOU

Way too many don't know the end of the saying! Jut like the saying "blood is thicker than water" is actually "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb"
Rico reminds me a little of Jack in The Lord Of The Flies
why is the chick from the polar express here
Noah Wilbur 😂😂
Cool film Bertie I enjoyed the cinematography a lot. Although I still feel something is off, I'm not sure what it is, but I feel like your films have a lot of potential. I would love to see you direct a more traditional plot with someone's writing and a cast of people you aren't familiar with. Perhaps you could cast some students at a drama school, cause I know there's a lot of amazing drama schools in London. That's just my opinion, overall some awesome progress, you seem to get better with every new film.
Same. I feel like something is off, and I think it's the acting for me. Feels a tad bit overacted, not genuine and authentically the characters.
Also hats off to Ciaran
Kara Fielding I think that is the point that they were trying to make because it is a short film they were trying to put depth into the characters by making them overact and this also gives the character a straight forward feel while the film was a mystery sort of things with their own spin on film making.
***** I get the point of the characters, but it still feels overacted to me. You can have genuine characters in short film with a experimental storyline, it doesn't have to feel inauthentic. But don't get me wrong, I love Bertie's work, I just feel like this is a flaw in this film.
Kara Fielding Yea I understand what you mean and respect your opinion but what I was trying to say is that, they are overacting because it adds depth. (it also makes them look insane).
This was incredible, I loved the dark humour and I think the story is definitely your most intriguing yet! Hope you're all super proud of this x
good film, has a moonrise kingdom feel to it
Yeah it's the sudden change of scene and the title for each scene I not iced aswell
i kinda get submarine vibes from this
but satisfaction brought it back
Certainly does show the danger of swimming with skinny jeans, if only Jon had chosen a more suitable pair of summer shorts he might have escaped the bully's dark influence aquatically - even fashion has it's dangers, ^oo^
( Fill in your own superlatives on lighting, direction, acting & editing etc here )
very "'Skins" feel but with more symbolism and depth
True
How is this anything like skins?....like at all...
how are you anything like skins? ....like at all...
What? I'm not saying I am like skins...fucking idiot.
woah really? eeeehhh I luv your pic tho l-/
Awesome.
Hey Jack! Perfect example of how you should take your youtube channel. Do whatever you love and get fantastic results from it.
jack you are focking awesome👌ily
I read a poem once about a
boy who violently killed his cat so I kinda imagined Rico as being the boy because they had similar reasoning, thought process and views on people and this just reminded me so much of it
youre abstract in manipulating sequences. you should be proud.
The soundtrack in your films is always on point! Well done!
I don't know why but the feeling this film gave me was like the plague dogs, escaping from a facility, wandering around stealing, drowning. Rico was like the fox, Jon was like the smaller dog and Rainy was the bigger dog.
Your best work yet. Obviously Alia is a very talented individual too.
Although I will say it might be easier to get confused as to what the plot is, as is evident in other comments. I grasped it pretty well, but others, not so much.
After watching your short films, it has sort of become a dream of mine to be an actress in one of your films one day. The characters you create are so thought out and would definitely be very interesting to work with!
im so incredibly proud of how far you've come since making youtube videos in your bedroom! :)
I honestly think this is your best looking film yet! But as much as I want to, I don't rate Alia's performance. It's not bad, just feels unnatural to me. Other than that, each shot is just so well set up and yours and Hannah's performances are really convincing!
usually not the biggest fan of short films as i have the attention span of a golden retriever but yours are always a pleasure to watch and better each time :)
Really enjoyed this, Bertie.
bertie gilbert: king of mise en scene
I don't want to be ignorant and view this as one dimensional.
Can people explain what they thought it was about?
***** lots of people are interpreting it in interesting ways! Everything was intentional. There is a moral and message. Here's me talking about some of the symbolism - soundcloud.com/bertiegilbert/talking-about-killed-the-cat
THIS WAS STRESSFUL (in an omigod you are a creative genius kind of way)
amazing short film! i definitely think that watching it a couple of times through will give the most enjoyment; every time noticing new things. i absolutely can't wait for a bts/commentary for this.
i love you Bertie! Your films are so wonderful and the just mess with my mind, i really don't know how to feel even though i understand it.... Thankyou so much your awesome!
WHAT'S THE SONG AT 9:36? Please say, I'm sooo obsessed with it 🙏
This was so good
The chapters were amazing
And although it didn't follow the classic three act structure (I'm pretty sure, please correct me if i'm wrong) the outline, the want, the biggest desire was still sitting right in front of us and right to the very end held us holding on for more. The use of interview style cinematic techniques and the twisted beautiful world of cinematic art, this short film has got be one of my favourites. Well done Bertie, hopefully when i graduate with my film degree next year, i'll be just as brilliant at it as you
your films are always so pretty and i love your characters so much, thank you. i hope you'll be recognized for your talent the way you deserve one day.
what is the song that played during the credits/where can i get it?? amazing job by the way bertie!!
i'm on a marathon of your films and this is definitely the one i liked the most! gonna listen to your podcast right now :D
Sneaky lil' Mitchell Davis
Not my favourite of your short films but still excellent!
A lot of these comments seem to be forgetting that this film was by Bertie AND Alia. Great job to both of you I really enjoyed it :)
So glad this gem is back. Don’t think we wouldn’t notice. This influenced the way I make movies
I can't wait for the day when Bertie's becomes one of the best known Directors to ever live
There was a lot of overacting, but other than that it was good. The ending is good, also.
Can someone tell me the songs used for this video? They are all way to good!
where was this filmed? that town is beautiful
I think it's Looe, in Cornwall
Moon Man yeah it is in looe I live there
Amazing cinematography, especially some of the longer shots and I really liked the sound was amazing too. Also, your use of Helvetica makes everything so much nicer. Great film dude, really enjoyed it.
I wasn't sure about this film at the beginning, everything was too vague and mixed up and I found myself getting slightly lost. However, as the film progressed and things were uncovered it turned into a really great short film. The ending summed up nicely without explaining everything, and throughout the entire film the cinematography was spot on - amazing camera shots and compostions. Complex yet blatantly obvious at the same time.
LOVE! I love everything in this! especially the slow motion flour shots. The acting was really good as well. I really enjoy the ambiguity you present within your films. Thank you for another inspiring film!
Oh god. I think I've seen this before. I don't remember when but I have a feeling I've seen the film before. Damn. Maybe when I was younger.
It's so well made! It gives me such a weird feeling.
Acting in this film is bad. I didn't get reasons of any emotions that are more difficult than just anger and selfishness. And it's completely not my fault because I've understood everything from script and story but haven't seen anything in your actors' eyes. There was no depth in characters (except John) because guys acted from a very point of their noses, not from their guts. The only good actor is you, Bertie. You have experience, you know how it all works. John have been free, confused, happy, scared, desperate. Rickey haven't been bossy, cruel or crazy, he have been acting the ape. And girl have been just a girl with big pauses between replicas and clicking throat.
I hope my text is pretty understandable. I've tried my best.
Bertie, I see a very big potentional in you and wil be really glad to see your work at my local cinema. Be careful with your cast next time.
Is the facility representing your home and your family? As Bertie mentioned that he felt the whole storyline was growing up, and they referenced the facility as "they were protecting us" or something like that, and so I was wondering if that's what was implied.
Someone needs to explain the plot to me, because i don't get this one at all. It's like that song you like but you have no idea what it trying to tell you. I'm Dutch, my English is bad, forgive me.
I'm not one for art films but I did enjoy this. I feel like the girl was definitely in some kind of rehab or mental health 'facility'. The other characters were possibly in her head hence the bullshit written by the doctor(holy shit was that Rainn Wilson?). Although I feel in some way that she drowned Bertie's character, or at least the rico side of her personality. I couldn't fully form an interpretation but as always I loved the style. The overacting kind of made sense as you realised that the characters were or mentally abnormal. Bertie's line of I'm going for a swim just gives me chills the way it was delivered
I loves this although I feel like this would have been much more satisfying as a full length film. I feel like you had everything there, it just needed more time to grow. Probably my favorite short film of your's yet.
I feel like it was a bit too disjointed and there were random scenes that sort of stunted the flow of the movie. But, I enjoyed the style, the acting was great and in the end I got the message so those were good.
I listened to the podcast and watched this twice, and I get the overall symbolism (at least from my perspective) but I'm a bit confused on the choice of title. I mean I know the book dropping is like a passegeway between reality and fantasy or childhood and teenager. and the title of the book beging dropped is Curiosity, and "Curiosity killed the cat", but I don't see the connection between what the dropping of the book has with the title? could you explain it to me please?
I'm not sure but my guess is that she's the metaphorical cat. That curiosity killed her as a person.
A lot of comments are complaining that Rainy's character was overacted, but I think it was intentional. I got the feeling she was meant to seem a bit dense, or immature and naive at least, somewhat of an ingenue. I'm not exactly sure what her character's deal is, or what she's meant to represent, but in light of the ending it seems reasonable to believe that she's a liar and that she's exaggerating her story during the therapy sessions/interview
haha the conversation about milk when alia was beating up that guy !! love it Bertie
Curiosity killed the cat
what's the song at 9:36? Please tell
Saddest part was the last scene omg It was like watching a part of me go but as a person so that was weird also absolutely brilliant film!
I don't know why but your films always make me cry.
I´ve dealt with a few ´´Ricos´´ in my life...I really like this :)
What song is playing at the end?
Such brilliant acting, wow.
The farther you are from normality, the closer you are to truth.
does anyone know what the final song is called when the credits were rolling??
It thought this was a Tim Burton film ahhaha great Job bertie
I think this is your best one yet. You've really grown as a filmmaker. Definitely keep on experimenting
considering the full quote is 'curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back' it'd be cool if there was a kind of sequel called 'brought it back'. Also I find it interesting and impossible how detailed these surreal plots are, and how you guys make them. The whole thought process is brilliant and just..how ?? ?
I think it should be called satisfaction.
That was an insanely amazing film.
Wow this is amazing! So well filmed!
does anyone know what the song at the end is called? thank you
Wait so John died from drowning!?
This reminds me of the movie discopig
Was Rainy's use of high rise intonation and vocal fry a character device, or just (annoying) habits of the actress?
Well directed. Nice locations. Well done.
P.S. ... Flour is flamable! Keep away from fire! (Unless that was Richo's plan) :)
I actually agree on the milk thing though.
But absolutely brilliant as always Bertie!
And what happened to "Death at Delgado Studios"? (I'm sorry I've forgotten the name) x
I really don't like this compared to all your other works, it kind of lacks plot and it doesn't have any meaning unless you listen to the podcast, it's more a thing for the creators than the viewers
It's one of those films that gets you thinking, inviting people to have their own interpretations
Very interesting film Bertie. I quite enjoyed it. Really loved the mix of Rainy's monologue with the "regular" timeline of the story. It really blended together nicely. My only complaints are that some of the cuts are just a bit odd, and RUclips's crappy compression kinda ruined the grain but that isn't your fault.
Definitely will re-watch this several times to see if I can't dig out any deeper meanings. Looking forward to this being uploaded on Vimeo, and for your next shorts!
- m
First of all, I really, REALLY enjoyed Hannah Nanton's acting, she did an amazing job.
Besides that, I really liked the feel of this short. I got some Skins vibes from it at times. I did however feel that the chapter screens kind of pulled me out of it each time, to where I would feel tempted to alt tab to tumblr for a sec. Especially considering the length of the short, I don't feel the chapters were really necessary, besides the epilogue that one fit quite nicely.
Intriguing, fascinating and absolutely stunning. The narrative was so captivating and also thought the acting from all three of the actors was brilliant. The scene of John and Rainy talking while Ricco is beating up the cashier was funny yet disturbing at the same time. Great work Bertie & Alia and to everyone involved!
Holy fuck i am in love with a piece of film. Gorgeous cinematography aside, it's fun, it's fresh it's super original yet it somehow brings Where The Wild Things Are and Moonrise Kingdom to mind.
(also on another really freaky note i dreamed about the slapping scene almost exactly as it is a few months back, except in my dream there was a white bed on the grass and i was quietly sitting there just watching as alia slapped bertie)
Why were there people with masks? That's the only part in confused about! I loved this film though!
am i the only one who thinks this kinda sucks compared to his other work
Everyone's talking about the clarity of this film, but what I liked about it most was that it left me thinking and it was open to interpretation. I personally found the plot clear, but it doesn't really matter that some people didn't :) Which is what films need more of these days, more focus on the message rather than JUST the plot
I must admit I'm kind of disappointed... I loved all of your previous movies but this one doesn't have the same effect on me... but this is purely a matter of taste, otherwise the directing really shows how talented you guys are. Maybe I just missed something haha anyone care to tell me what I might have missed ? ^^
The fact that you used Helvetica / Minion for the Allegorical card and then Helvetica Neue / Times New Roman for the title card gets me really sad. Other than that, amazing piece of art.
Rainy's commentary/narration throughout the story tied it all together wonderfully.
He just keeps knocking them out! Good stuff man!
23 year old filmmaker here not ashamed to admit I look to up this guy like 7 years younger than me!
You've really grown into your own style of filmmaking. Very interesting and modern. Your a big inspiration!
