Watching this makes me want to become.a filmmaker, just to attempt to come close to creating something as beautiful and powerful as this.
Megan Maybee I feel exactly the same way
oh SHUCKS
That was beautiful Bertie, although I got a shock when Declan McKenna started playing
Twice!
i literally got goosebumps when i heard it!
My two favorite British people. Oh wait... I love all British RUclipsrs...
This film was beautiful, but I did struggle to understand it thematically so I'll dump some of my thoughts here before watching it again.
The core of this story is the internal conflict happening within Monroe I think. In the beginning, I didn't know whether to categorize this film as something hopeful and uplifting or darker and uncertain. The first shots of him tap dancing fit the latter theme cinematically I thought, though the shots were dark and blue. Nevertheless the shots built up quickly, with sound and motion becoming overwhelming and really stressful. And the film continued to hold this pace. I always felt on edge, even though the subject of the shots were mostly mundane, small interactions of the characters. The outlying moments were when red shirt Monroe was present, lurking in the background or walled off by moving boxes. Why is he there? Clearly he represents a part of Monroe that he is unable to express, a part that judges and notices the unfairness of white shirt Monroe's actual actions. Monroe seems consumed by his art and it troubles his relationships. What connection does this have to the house, 'stomping grounds' as a phrase, moving boxes, and the sort of bleak emptiness of the house itself? Are they moving out? Moving in? The end seems to confirm they're moving out, but what about pictures taken outside the house in the beginning? Beginning and endings seem blurred, and Monroe seems caught in a sort of non-home of obsession.
What does Amy reveal about Monroe? Why has Bertie chosen this particular character to be with Monroe? She too has an art, she seems relentlessly kind and smart. Her character is clear and stable where Monroe's is murky and fragmented. Her life also seems incredibly linear compared to Monroe's. Small successes leading to bigger opportunities, grieving and moving on, and so on. Juxtaposition also plays a large role with the telling of the story of Monroe getting a nosebleed on stage. Amy sees two perspectives of the event, Monroe's and his dad's. One is positive but then a darker context is revealed that illustrates more of Monroe's conflict with himself, pushing himself and his art, being obsessive and holding himself to standards that are ultimately destructive and isolating.
There's definitely things I didn't catch, and I'm probably wrong about some interpretations. I will re-watch it now!! Just wanted to think a little by writing. Really captivating story though, I'm so glad it's at last out for us to watch!
Brilliant assessment
Please consider adding English subtitles to your short films, it would really help us non-native English speakers to fully appreciate your outstanding pieces of art
Dag yes! that accent can be hard to grasp
Or people with hearing disabilities!
YES! I am hearing impaired and I struggled with this. Subtitles ruin the aesthetics of Bertie’s film and he’s laboured so hard over the cinematography that it seems a shame to distract from it with the captions. However, lipreading wasn’t helpful in this film so as visually beautiful and musically pleasing as it was- I have absolutely no idea what was said all the way through lol. Bertie I love the themes and the film, but please consider making proper English subtitles x
Dag RUclips has subtitles ? Turn them on in settings he doesn’t need to put them on
Ayla Nah nah it’s British English like
What a beautiful film. From the cinematography to the acting, the directing to the sound design, this film screams professionalism and beauty - you and your team are no longer amateurs and it's inspirational
that's very kind of you :-)
I honesty mean it - I'm so glad you got the professional praise you deserve and are finding a voice for yourself outside of youtub (can't wait to see what you do with your young talent award). You're living my dream and seeing you succeed given your mental health keeps me going on youtube daily
Couldn’t agree more
Same here, bud
I'm continually knocked out by how far Bertie pushes himself, his team, and his audience. His every film shows his hunger to reach farther technically, dig deeper emotionally, and master the rare art of telling a more engaging story by leaving things unsaid.
thank you kindly, mickeleh. really means a lot x
Couldn't agree more
I'm here! It's happening!
*screaming intensifies*
Edit: I just finished it and woah. This is without a doubt your best one yet. Everything you've done whist shooting this, Space Trip and all, it all lead to something beautiful. I guess what I'm trying to say is you put a piece of your soul in this. Something I can grab and look at. A beautiful thing that I really couldn't put a price on.
Thank you Bertie. Thank you so much
YES STOMPO GROMPO IS FINALLY HERE !
Jaymi *STOMPO GROMPO*
STOMBLO GROMBLO
I have exactly 20 minutes before i have to work again, just enough time to watch another one of Bertie's master pieces ♡
What a beautiful looking film! And some of the visual concepts and transitions are really entertaining.
I think the biggest flaw of this film is that it feels like a feature trying to fit itself in 20 minutes. To me, there wasn't enough time to fully develop the ideas you had in order to evoke the emotions you want to by the end of the film. Take Whiplash, which this obviously was inspired by (my favorite film, by the way). The Whiplash short successfully tells a story, evokes an emotion, and proves the concept of the feature without feeling rushed at all. They did this by only having 1 scene (well, 1 sequence, let's say). It's a story, there's an arc, but it's not a feature film with subplots and callbacks, etc.
This is definitely a great step forward in your filmmaking pursuits and I can't wait to see where you go. I don't mean for this comment to discourage you, but to give you my thoughts as a guy also trying to develop his skills in film and encourage you to do better! Improvement only comes when taking action and then reviewing (rinse + repeat).
Have a good day, Bertie.
I've been feeling the exact same thing for a while! And not only regarding stomping grounds, with the rest of his films as well. At least the acting has improved a lot...
i think that's definitely a recurring thing with my stuff! when you go to festivals, the majority of shorts are about ideas instead of characters. clean premises that are fleshed out in a few minutes. i think you can 100% tell with most of my stuff where i hope to end up - making features. sure it can feel a bit crammed to some! i wanted this film to more closely resemble the longer-form stuff i hope to make and i get that inclination can maybe feel at odds with the length. i think overall this feels more elevated compared to my other stuff, but still kinks to be worked out!
i sympathise with this a lot, as i find it hard to not try to tell a ninety minute story in ten minutes. Be careful when you start making features that you don't go way over long, it's an easy mistake to make
Catch me crying..... I was a dancer who let this stupid world control my life, pushed away everyone, and it bit me in the ass bc my body just didn’t have what it took to go from full time dance school to professional.... with injuries and all fucking over my day to day life still years later, I wish I still remembered what about ballet made me so happy once. It destroyed my childhood but I’m finally rebuilding my life
"special thanks to ladybug brown gilbert" YES it's what she deserves!!
I wish Bertie would develop his story telling more, he is such a talented director and the cinematography is beautiful but this story felt very hollow. It needs more substance and then I believe Bertie will have beautiful films with dynamic characters and stories that leave the a lasting impression on the viewer. I love this Bertie and I appreciate how much work and time and effort went into this, but please please please I know you can write a better story than this, and I can't wait for the day I get to see it on screen. Much love from Chicago!
you see if bertie would developp his short-movies, they wouldnt be short anymore. there are many symbols, in the objects, the clothes, the lights and the sounds. you have to read through them to understand the story. obviously you can't understand it all at first, you have to really think about it and re-watch it to get it, but that's the point and that's what makes it just....beautiful? now i cannot explain the story to you because i dont have all the info and i need to re-watch it but you should do the same,
na he's too fucking pretentious
kelly naz lmaooo
@@OneD26 The story's not that complicated, you can understand it from first watch and explain it in a short paragraph. I think what's being critiqued is that the story needs to be developed more, not that the ways in which the story is told need to be altered. I personally liked this film, for a short I thought there was enough story and character there, but I think it's a bit strange to make out like you'd need to rewatch it several times and decode the mise-en-scene to be able to follow the plot
This was.... phenomenal! The cinematography, the acting, the music, the sound, the colours, everything. I LOVED it!
“You are watching BertieBertG, Hope you enjoy the show” come along way Mr Gilbert, look forward to seeing your feature films in cinema one day..
Well fucking done, Bertie. There's so much chemistry between the cast and I love the way we see Monroe looking back at his past. Bill and Amelia both show strong and subtle emotions, while Vince and Alison show the love and concern that is so typical of parents. I loved watching Monroe beg and plead with himself (obviously not sadistically,,) with remorse splayed across his facial features and the build-up with every tap of his shoes as he rehearsed. Everything you create is just. So. Damn. Good.
Coming back to say that there's a scene in this that has stuck with me for the week that this has been out. Monroe walking away when his dad wants to reminisce and talk made my heart ache. It's something that's particularly painful because I can see myself doing this very thing in several of my memories from being a teenager. You really captured this so well. Him going back and reliving these painful memories where he's fucked up and he can't undo is something I relate to a lot. I think this film was done so well and has a different level and angle to look at it every time you watch it. There's absolutely a depth here, but for me it reminds me so much of feelings of regret.
This was really good, still, I just wanted to come back & write a more heartfelt reasoning as to why.
Bertie used Declan McKenna songs and I’m dead
Very nicee, feels profesh and natural. Whiplash but calmer and sweeter with a delightful spoonful of spicy sadness
Is this is an adaptation of Stuart Little 4:The Mouse Takes Manhattan?
obviously
Absolutely stunning, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen with how beautiful the cinematography was. The story that was carefully woven into each piece of the film made me start thinking about what I was leaving behind as I was busy with uni and more specifocally who. Thanks so much to everyone who helped to make this film possible ♥
The cinematography and camera angles are just amazing ♥️love these short films
bertie this is absolutely phenomenal, i can't even put it into words. stompo grompo holds a special place in my heart now
this was visually beautiful. every single shot was compositionally beautiful, and pleasing to the eye. all the transitions felt beautiful and added emotion.but, I felt like it was hard to follow? maybe that’s because it’s late and i’m tired and also stupid but I felt like I didn’t know exactly what was going on and had a hard time telling where we were in time. this was definitely amazing though and was great.
just watched this for the first time and yeah... i'm in a strange position of finding the film very beautiful and moving, but still not understanding it? i get a sense that there is something behind this and i want to be able to appreciate it
um Bertie and Declan breaking my heart??
YES INDEED
Bertie Gilbert ❤❤❤
Ava snsnsnsmsnsns
StreakyWalker lol yes of course
I've never experienced a film in such a way that I watched it twice in a row. Surreal !!
This is absolutely insane, I needed to watch it twice to admire every detail and probably still missed a ton, watching it the second time revealed all those tiny, but incredibly telling lines, all those details in script, sound, visuals and setting, it was absolutely beautiful and astounding. I've always liked filmmaking yet couldn't find the time to make something real, but right now I am so inspired to create something just remotely as beautiful as Stomping Grounds. Bertie, this is a masterpiece, I am stunned.
this is next level! the story, the dialogues, the picture -- everything is great. thank you for creating films that just hit home, Bertie
Stomp gromp I'm at work but you best believe I'm watching this as soon as I finish
My inner tap nerd is quivering! THIS IS SO GOOD, NICE JOB BERTIE!!!
Elements of your own life here, Bertie: loss of a parent, saying goodbye to the home you grew up in, and I'd guess the nosebleed story could be too
everytime i watch one of Bertie's films it just sparks my interest in cinematography even more. the way he uses jumpcuts his scenes, the way he uses light and frame and color, all to tell this story that almost feels like I've lived in. it fascinates me to no end. Bertie is a true artist.
WOW. absolutely breathtaking. i just got home after spending the night at the emergency ward and this totally just transported me into another world. beautiful work, Gilbert and team xx
Congratulations Bertie x
I've been waiting forever imma cry real quick
Thank you for this. This is, well, breathtaking. It’s beautiful and honest and you’ve changed so much from your original films. I only know a smidge of how hard you worked, how worthwhile, yet painstaking the process of creating this film was. Thank you. Seriously, thank you
Just finished it. The cinematography is mesmerising because of how fucking beautifully this was put together. Excellent as always Bertie
This was incredible!! I’m loving the use of Declan mckenna music
i am crying! this is beautiful and real and raw and so so genuinely touching!
also bug being in the special thanks is the cutest thing
never clicked on a video that fast. so proud bert x
Oh great I'm supposed to leave for uni in 5 minutes and here i am, crying over this? SO GOOOOD AAAA
This is really good. I remember all the photos of your old family house when you cleared it all out in order to leave. This reminds me of that.
Beautiful as always, Bertie. I’m absolutely astounded by how much your films have changed through the years! I love this so much!!! Thank you for sharing this with us!!!
I’ve been watching you develop into a real filmmaker since 2011 and I am so amazed at how far you’ve come. Everything from the rich ideals presented in your films to the beautiful cinematography is absolutely astonishing. I know that with content like Stomping Grounds you will definitely achieve your goals and more. Best of luck! 👏🏻
Wow. Absolutely gorgeous. You have outdone yourself, Bertie - congratulations. To you and to everyone involved. I hope this film receives all the praise and recognition it deserves.
it's been very difficult recently to find a film that is both visually stunning and has emotional substance; this one is incredible! the team has done a fantastic job, and bertie - wishing you the best of luck!
I was so surprised to see tapping in a short film! It was WONDERFUL! I've tap danced since I was 9 and I WISH I was as talented as him. This is now one my favorites of yours.
researching this almost a year and a half later, hoping I'd understand it better
I remember liking it a bit less than all his other films when I first watched it, on first impressions at least
I wasn't worried, I figured it was because I hadn't completely understood it and I'd learn to appreciate it more and more as years would go by
I've rewatched it a bunch of times, but today I'm feeling like ice grasped a bit more of it than all the other times, and it's the first time
excited to keep growing and coming back to this and liking it more and more
The wait was so worth it! You conveyed emotions and atmospheres in such a raw yet delicate way, with the music, the cuts, the angles and the lights. So proud of how far you've come in terms of cinematography!
very kind, thank you
Bertie that was overwhelming. Seriously well done I loved it so much it’s fantastic. Loved the Jack and Dean chair thing too.
Really looking forward to this Bertie, I know it's gonna be a good one
I am so honoured and humbled to have been able to contribute to this amazing film with my music. Thank you for the opportunity, Bertie ❤️
thank you Bertie for yet another amazing film that has gripped me through direction , acting, cinematography and so much more . you truly are a talent that inspires my inner film maker....STOMPO GROMPO was worth the wait
Love the anamorphic high contrast look, and the handheld camera, reminds me of a Von Trier film
so bloody proud of you bertie, keep doing what you do. this was beautiful. so inspired. x

i'm speechless. the wait was worth it. INCREDIBLE. i am so happy for this extraordinary break through on this extraordinary channel featuring an extraordinary filmmaker. maybe i'm a little less speechless then i thought.

THIS is why i want to be a filmmaker. this is a piece of soul.
Bertie manages to do this thing where he pops up out of the blue with the most powerful film that changes your perspective on everything
I've waited so long for this in great anticipation. It exceeded every expectation and is simply incredible.
This was so amazing, one of the most beautiful shorts I've seen in a long time. The color correction, the performance and the sound design really stood out from an all around great film. Congratulations to all of you!
Simply beautiful. Thank you.

i frickin marked this in my calendar and woke up to the notification and was instantly awake and feeling happy and excited,, this is so incredibly beautiful and well-done, it's everything, i'm so proud,, great job bert x
This is... incredible. And crazily familiar. Almost as though this film is a distorted shadow of my own life and relationships and experiences. What a way to capture such a struggle and frustration within people. Brilliant
first of all, the shots are amazing, storyline so good.then Declan shows up and everything just got better. love it
the fact that lady bug got a special thanks is the purest thing i have ever seen
SHE IS SURPRISINGLY CINE-LITERATE
This was such a beautiful film and deserves all the awards it got and more.
I didn't want it to end! Screamed NO at my phone when the fade to black happened
been waiting for over a year, but it feels like years plural. so glad to finally be catching this, and i gotta say - well done. you always do incredible work, and are a never-ending source of inspiration to me, always have been, but this is my favorite of yours since possibly Tick Where It Hurts; my long-standing favorite that may now be challenged by this. love the themes tackled here, great performances, and the motif of the boxes really spoke to me! adored that. i've been following you since the beginning of your short films (my sister followed your vlogs and introduced me to Stray Dog when you posted it) and i just want to thank you so much for, frankly, being a constant in my life and always putting your all into your films. sometimes your films are so good i'm almost discouraged when making my own films (i feel like they're so good i'll never compete), but for the most part they always push me forward and make me want to keep going, and they've helped me through some tough spots in life as well. so again, i can't thank you enough for all of that and for your constantly sharing yourself creatively with the world and certainly with me. don't ever quit doing what your'e doing, "onwards and upwards"
Berries films are always ones that leave you sat down in stunned silence, ones that make you think. They are so powerful, nice one Bert, ya did good :)
thank you so much but also BERRIES
My phone's an idiot I meant BERTIE OMG jejsjsjkskekeuwuhzhsushbdhd
This is absolutely stunning...I hope one day I'll be able to create something as beautiful and powerful as this. Phenomenal job. Cant believe I didnt find it sooner
oh my god yes i've been waiting for this for ages
I was lowkey confused until the very end and then I cried
that's life innit
Wow that's a great way to describe life. Confused the whole way through (after all, life is filled with twists and turns). And then the very end. Death. Tears. Crying. The way you put it; obvious yet subtle, slang but used in a literary way, Beautiful and tragic. I would love to meet you one day and congratulate you on your amazing ability to evoke emotion. What a great guy!
I'm highkey confused about all of it
Just superb, Bertie!!! Amazing cinematography, acting, soundtrack, editing and of course, directing! Can't wait for what other projects are yet to come!
we love the declan mckenna track at 4:44
I’ve been Waiting for this!!!
finally omgggg i have been waiting for this for like 20 years. obsessed w bill
Twenty minutes was over in an instant. Bertie, this is so beautiful, so powerful, so engaging. The cinematography, the grade, the pacing - all spectacular. And the story - in pursuit of a dream, only to lose sight of what's around us. Well worth the wait.
Your films almost always move me to tears! I really liked it and I'm so happy to see the way you and your team have matured as filmmakers
Freaking thrilled, I tried to see it in London for the independent film festival 😭
I managed to see it there, it was phenomenal
What an absolutely beautiful film Bertie. The writing, the performances from the actors and the gorgeous cinematography. After seeing the promotions and stills on your instagram, my excitement quickly grew, and to now be watching your film is incredible. Congratulations and the awards and this wonderful film Bertie. Truly lovely

This is beautiful, Bertie! You should be so proud of yourself, this is amazing. Simply wonderful.
Every time I watch one of Bertie’s films, it only makes me want to push more and more to be a filmmaker. Amazing work again.
The kind of thing that leaves you tilty headed and more aware of the sounds around you.
Seriously, I am so amazed. This has got to be one of my favorite works of yours. You truly have come so far since the start of your account. I really do wish the best for you. Everything was phenomenal!!

Everything about this was absolutely beautiful. I am in love with this piece of work, thank you so much for sharing and continuing to create. I’m so happy to follow your journey.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
you, as a director, have improved so much. i love how you led the actors through this film. i love the images as well. kudos to the camera. the acting was beautiful, too. the dad's scene where he attempted to talk about how his mum loved his hair.... oh man! what a beautiful, small moment. loved it. keep creating.
FINALLY!!!! THANKYOU BERTIE I’M EXCITED
This is beautiful ! I love everything about it. It was worth the wait ! I’ve watched it 3 times already, I love analysing every little details. I agree, this film is the start of a new era. Fantastic job. A round of applause for everyone behind it !
