    Pick importance is so underrated. Jim Dunlop was a giant in the Guitar World, he had so many great innovations. Interesting story of Jim Dunlop, awesome guy, wish I could have met him when he was alive.

    I like the Jazz I, it has a more rounded tip, almost like the round side of a 351 pick, and is easier for strumming chords and for rhythm work, while still having all the benefits of the Jazz III. The Jazz II I think has a less round tip, I think it is more like the tip of a 351, I need to get my hands on some to see. I also use the Max Grip Jazz III Carbon Fiber, and they have a slightly rounded tip, just a little of a material removed vs a regular Jazz III.

    I've grown past them now, or at least the regular ol' red ones, but jazz 3s literally revolutionized my playing, it was night and day, I was struggling with dead notes any time I would solo because I just couldn't time the pass of the pick and then when I picked these up I could just get *right* up on the string and go from there, boom I was finally able to alternate strings without dead notes. Now it's no big deal, we're talking almost 12 years ago, but without these I may never have passed that point.

    This video is no lie. I bought those KH Jazz III’s just for a meme. It sounded way better than the regular tortex I used and I also felt like I had more control. There really is no going back after you get used to them.

    That's great that you leave them around - pass it forward! I've been playing Jazz 3's for years. You get used to strumming with them in time. I have a little tin filled with picks, but my Jazz 3's are the ones that sit on my amp anyway lol. Maybe I'll make necklaces or something with all the ones I don't use anymore.

    I’m gonna be the odd one here. I use so many different picks for so many different reasons. Love jazz 3s to work on my accuracy but ultimately, I’m a metal head who’s go to type picks are triangle picks lol. No joke. I love those hogs.
    I know we can all relate to the guitar pick deep dive. Also, everyone’s opinions and reasons for whatever pick is best are all valid. I will always love in depth convos about picks lol. No joke.

    • @tctrio
      @tctrio  Год назад +1

      There are definitely no right or wrong answers when it comes to picks, whatever works works. Impressed that you can play with the triangles, I can’t even get those to work for me when playing bass, lol.

    • @KonwTheTrut
      @KonwTheTrut Год назад

      @@tctrio honestly, I never would’ve tried one if I wasn’t experimenting and the first time I used one, I nope outta there. But then a triangle was the only one I had and after awhile….it just felt right. For the record I use ProPlec, Casein, and the brown primer one triangles. They all have their pros in different ways for me.

    Been using the Jim Dunlop Jazz III since 1988. A ripping guitar player at the time (Vernon Reid) stated he used them in an interview, so I got one to try - and the red ones do have a different billet-effect than the black ones, for whatever reason...I score the surfaces of mine with a razon blade or knife tip for better grip.

    I was into shred guitar for a while, but when I started playing more rock like green day and weezer, the jazz 3 started working against me. I moved to T3 which have the jazz 3 point and that was a good compromise. Next pick I'm trying is the flow, which I think is going to be the perfect balance of size, speed and tone.

      I found the same. As a metal player who does lots of rhythms and weird picking patterns, I’ve found the Flow offers the best of both worlds.

    My favorite is the blue tortex jazz iii xl. They wear out a bit fast though but i like their warmer tone.

  • @timwhite5562
    @timwhite5562 Год назад +2

    If I could make a recommendation: I use Dunlop lil Stubbys, both Jazz III size and regular. I only use them when I practice, when I play I use regular Jazz IIIs; Ultex with my Strat because of the warmer sound, and the red with my 335 because they're brighter. But after play with the Stubbys, it's like Adderall for picking accuracy.
    I really want to try don't of the Dava jazz sized picks. I've used the larger ones, when I go from pick to fingers I curl my index finger to hold the pick, and the rubber on the pick let's my get a good purchase. The only issue is the store I get them only have the regular ones, and the plastic they use softens when it gets worn. They make them with a different material as well that I need to try.

  • @timwhite5562

    Moving to heavy picks when I first did greatly improved my playing. I didn't realize how tightly I had been holding the picks until I started using picks that didn't have any play, it just wouldnt work, so it forced me to hold them lighter.
    I've been using Jazz IIIs for at fifteen years, originally just the Red but I started using the Ultex a lot since the late 2000's. Almost everyone describes them as being brighter than the reds. I don't get it because I find them far warmer than the red or black. I pretty much use the Ultex strictly for my Strat because it warms them up, and the red for my 335 because it's brighter.

    I only use the eric johnson red jazz 3 pick because that pick is still made with the old formula they're softer. I don't like the new red jazz 3 pick they're just a little too stiff for my liking. Give them a try. You might like them more.

      I did use the EJs for a long time before switching over to the Blue Chips primarily. I do think the EJs are my favorite of the Dunlop Jazz III varieties, they definitely have a great feel to them.

    0:01 it did not, unfortunately. but this video did convince me to give the jazz 3 pick shape a try. if only because my current picks are all really worn-down and rounded off so that sharp point looks more enticing than it normally would. though i'm not sure if it's ideal for them all to be extremely firm. there are times i would want a softer pick.

    When I began using a Dunlop Jazz III, I didn't think I had found "the" pick. I had. I typically use a Jazz III shape if not the original nylon pick for some playing but prefer nylon Jazz IIIs for playing with others. I greatly prefer Dunlop Jazz III picks. I use garbage picks for rote, boring repetitive runs at home. For proper playing, I use a good pick and wear out the garbage for solo practicing at home.

    Apparently you have never tried the Dava Delrin pick. the very pointy red ones. I don't care about their marketing schtick with the 'control' tip etc., but I will say that the combination of the 1 mm thickness and the pointy Delrin tip are something to be equalled. If you play rhythm they take a while to get used to....if you play lead it's like 'WHERE WERE YOU MY ENTIRE LIFE!?!?'

      The red one? I believe it's just a screw organizer from Home Depot or other hardware store that I use to keep my picks in. I honestly don't remember where I got it, but any screw or small item organizer should do the trick.

    I have used (2) jazz3 picks exclusively for practice and all gigs. They are from an older batch and the only 2 left. I have some newer ones from 5 years ago but they don't seem to have the hardness or feel that my 2 favorite picks have. Maybe just my imagination but has anyone else experienced this?

    • @tctrio

      I personally haven't noticed a difference in the standard Dunlop Jazz III picks I've purchased and used over the years, but it's not crazy that there may be some varience. Eric Johnson swore by older Jazz IIIs that he held onto that they eventually used as a model for his signature Jazz III pick, and those feel a lot different to me compared to the current production Jazz IIIs as far as feel is concerned.

    i stopped using a pick 10 years ago and never looked back. im so used to using my fingers its awkward when i try to use a pick, but i think venturing out of your comfort zone breeds creativity, change things up every now and then.

    I actually can't stand the tiny size of jazz 3's. I tried to like them, but I just can't. It makes me feel anxious holding it and the tiny size just doesn't feel right to me, it stresses me out. I much rather have a normal sized pick that doesn't feel like I'm gonna lose it playing.

      Hi! I've been playing Jazz IIIs for 15 years, I would recommend checking out a Max Grip Jazz III (carbon fiber). I've never dropped one whereas the non-max grip versions fell out of my hand a lot.

    I never understood how or why all the shred guru guys would swear by the stubbies. You know the very small fat and sharp purple stubbies. I used to try these picks over and over and over for many years and just couldnt figure it out. I later changed my picking technique entirely. Misha Mansoor from periphery has this same story as me how he had to change his picking technique. We both used to hold the pick flat with 3 fingers and when we picked, the pick edge would come into contact with the string at a perfect 90 degree angle, making it a very hard aggressive pluck, but also making it very challenging to get across the strings because every string hit would feel like fighting or forcing your way through the string with the pick. Rather later in life people realize there is essentially 1 basic uniform technique for holding your pick, all the pros hold it this way for many styles of guitar, Idk about flat pickers they are a different story. but everyone holds thier pick this 1 way I have found, paul gilbert, yngwie, everyone. holds it this way. pinched between pointer and thumb, creating a pick slanted angle so that when the pick comes into contact with the string, the sharp edge doesnt interfere but rather is slices or cuts through. creating this angle, or pick slant, is why these stubbies were made and you cannot use these picks unless you pack slant. I use the 1.5 white tortex jazz3 now and its the best thing ive ever experienced and has made me level up best bang for buck investment of my time ive ever done to get better at guitar. it was like maybe 6 months after using this pick, with the new pick slanting proper technique, and i was a born again entirely different and MUCH better guitarist. So, if you are not understanding how to use these picks, it is because you are not pick slanting. the pick should cut, or scrape through, there is very little actual contact with the string. if the pick feels like its just bouncing off the string or being stopped, or is too difficult, it is because you are picking wrong.
