Dunlop John Petrucci Jazz III Review (and MAX GRIP Carbon Fiber Jazz III)

- In this video we look at the Dunlop JAZZ III Signature John Petrucci guitar pick, and compare it to the MAX GRIP Carbon Fiber JAZZ III.
The JP Jazz III is made of ULTEX. It's a very hard pick with a sharp point and edges. It's pretty slick except for a raised 'JP' logo which provides suitable grip. One thing to note is that in pictures the JP Jazz III looks like it has an indented grip area, this is NOT the case.
The JP Jazz III is larger than a standard Jazz III, so it can take some time to get use to if you have been playing with Jazz III's exclusively. The JP Jazz III is slightly smaller than a standard pick, and slightly larger than a standard Jazz III.
The MAX GRIP Carbon Fiber Jazz III is the standard Jazz III size and provides copious amounts of grip, you really feel "at one" with the Max Grip Jazz III. The Carbon Fiber is hard with very slight flexibility when really pushed. It has a sharp point and sides that glide over the strings and provides a bright tone without being overly harsh.
VERDICT: The DUNLOP JAZZ III MAX GRIP CARBON FIBER is still, THE BEST GUITAR PICK EVER! PERIOD.

Very useful video, especially when you compare pick's sizes (a not so easy to find information). I use the standard jazz iii (kind of orange colour), several Gator picks of different thickness, and the Dunlop jazz 205 and 208. I'll definitely check the carbon fiber jazz iii and the signature John Petrucci.

I was a big Carbon Fiber Max Grip fan but I noticed when I would pick hard and fast or just after playing for an hour or so the grip would really irritate my index finger on the side of my nail bed underneath the pick. I tried the JP's and fell in love with them, and i think because they're a little bigger I've dropped them much less the the Carbons even though it's a little more slick. Not to mention it's probably the most elegant pick I've ever seen. I think the best pick I've ever played with though is still a Winspear Sandstorm Shiv, with the tapered cut. At $7.00 a pick though the JP is still my No. 1
I opened my very first package of the Jazz lll max grip carbon fiber today. I gotta say.. I love em. I’ve used the JP Jazz lll for a little and the max grip is just better for me.
The newer Dunlop Primetone Jazz III 1.4mm with it's factory beveled edge and polished material has been my favorite now for a few years ..
I use the JP a lot (but I use also other brands which I think are really good as well!) but it depends what I do. I mean if I play metal in general they are great, the tone is great the grip is great. But for strumming in general or to play other music like punk I feel I need a different tone plus they are too small and too hard and I don't feel comfortable with the thickness as when I strumm fast, I fell like it's gonna slip out my fingers!

I think you'd like the red dava grip picks. they are abit more comfortable to play with but the same size. at first I was sceptical but now I prefer to play with them the most

Hi I'd few questions before the ultex jp signature pick, which jazz iii xl or smaller one was john using ? And now is he using the ultex or primetone?
Have you checked out pickboy? They have jazz picks and xl jazz picks with different materials and 2 grip types to my knowledge. I think they have 7 different materials so that's interesting. I came to them after looling for something similar to the max grip carbon fiber but in an xl size
Have you ever tried a V pick? The small pointed V pick is my favorite pick when I play on my electric guitar
How much is the thickness of the carbon fiber pick? Also how do you compare it with the kirk hammett jazz iii? Thanks!
I'll try them, it's the size that I'm dubious of. When I'd been playing with Jazz IIIs for a year or so, I discovered they made XLs. They're all but unusable for me, just way too big.
I don't know why so many people describe the Ultex as being brighter than the red ones. I find the red to be FAR brighter, to the point that I use the Ultex mostly with my Strat and the red with a 335 to add presence.

I put off trying the JP picks for a long time, I thought it was a gimmick but when I finally tried one I became a convert. My picking improved dramatically. The only downsides is I find the tone a bit brighter than the regular ultex and they seem to wear down faster. Or maybe it means I'm using them a lot more.
I actually find these picks warm your tone a bit more than your standard Dunlop, but maybe it's just in comparison to a Tortex Sharp 1.00mm that I also use. I also tremolo pick and alternate pick a lot more smoothly with the JP Jazz III than the Tortex, it's weird. I learned on the JPs, maybe that's why.

I don't have the max grip or the pure ultex jazz 3's but i got the others and other jazz picks and stiff tortex picks. I even got two different Dragonheart pick thicknesses which sound awesome but weird to get used to. I really like the JP jazz 3's and i swear by the tone i get besides the Dragonheart picks but they fit my chunky fat fingers and my hands get really sweaty so idk how good the tone is on those max grips
i prefer jp jazz 3 coz it slides so good while alternate picking or sweep picking.i was praticing eugienes trick bag with normal jazz3 n it was good but with jp,it got even better.its my new little secret weapon,more like a pick of destiny lol

A while ago I watched your video about the max grip and decided to give them a try, and damn they're good. The I tried the Hetfield Black Fang and the sound was way better than with the max grip, but they're too big. Are the Petrucci Jazz the best of both worlds?
Juan José Fonseca Godoy They may be just what you are looking for, I still prefer the Max Grip for the extra grip, smaller size, and slight amount of flex.
the 1 problem i have with the original jazz 3s are where i get them the depth of the writing varys which us realky confusing but its still very amazing

Do this happens to other guy? With the Max Grip i play better Alternate Picking, but for Economic picking and sweep picking i preffer the JP.
I love the jazz III max grip carbon fiber , for me is the best ever.. only one thing it needs for to be the best of the history, red color ...the black ones lose more easy than reds... if dunlop can make the jazz III max grìp carbon fiber in red i will cry of hapiness
iv'e been using the kirk hammets jazz lll picks for 4 year i just bought a pack of the max grip the kh one's just too easy to fall out out hands when my hand sweats

If you like those Petrucci picks but find them a little slippery just use Violin Rosin... simply scrape the surface of the Rosin with a coin and wipe the dust onto your fingers.. it stops them slipping...it stops any pick from slipping for that matter..... i never play without it now plus i can use any pick i want regardless of pick texture.... :)

I have really clammy hands, so the grip is a must.
Just got mine in today. Not bad at all. Mine are bigger than my red jazz3. I guess it depends on the batch.
Like them, but a bit too small even after using them for a few months.

Any tips on gripping the JP signature picks, I love the picks but they slip out really really easily, the grip is really poor in my experience.
Michael Stock Yeah they can be a bit slick. No tips really. If you absolutely love the picks and nothing else works for you (like the Max grip) then you could try cutting some lines in them with a razor, and then using a lighter or match to burn them just a bit. That's what I would do to the regular Jazz III picks before the Max Grip came out. Just be careful that you don't cut or burn yourself!

I got jazz iii max grip after watching this video, its a great pick but its tiny, can you recommend something along the same lines just a bit bigger please!
Iamyour faTHER It will take a good solid week to get use to the Jazz III size, but once you do, there is no going back, everything just feels giant. The John Petrucci Jazz III are a bit bigger than standard JAZZ III, they are very stiff, so be aware of that.
they also seem to have less attack than the normal jazz iii, does the petrucci one have more attack to it compared to the max grip ones?
Iamyour faTHER I personally think the attack is perfect on the Max Grip carbon fiber, it's bright, but not harsh. But, yes, IMHO, the Petrucci model has a super bright attack thanks to the material and how stiff they are. I use them sometimes with acoustic guitar.
Their are so many guitar picks. What are the differences? You got guitar picks made of celluloid, acetal, delrin, nylon, ultem, lexan, acrylic, delrex, and their are sharp tips, rounded tips, fast release, quick release, super quick release, contoured edge. Now if I want to play power chords and metal stuff and punk stuff and grunge stuff. Is their a guitar pick you would recommend besides dunlop tortex standard orange .60 mm, and their is bright tone guitar picks, warm tone guitar picks. Superior control. What does all this mean?
The materials make a difference at wearing down and the sound you'll get from them. Ultem will wear down way slower than Tortex or Celluloid, and give a brighter tone. If you love the standard shaped picks, you can try the Hetfield Black Fang ones, but if you want to go for a smaller pick with more control, try out the JP Jazz III
I hope you can help me out a little bit. I've been using "traditional" picks all my life, and my friend recommended to try out the Jazz III. So I bought one. It surprised me how much faster i can pick with them, so this convinces me to get used to this type of picks (I need a lot of practice to get used to them). On the other hand, I hate the sound of it. Sounds too weak for me. I can't really describe it, it kinda sounds like a very bendable pick, even though it's very stiff. Stiff enough for me anyways.
So my question is: does the carbon fiber jazz sound different from the regular jazz iii, or it's totally the same?
+davidsunhun I don't notice a change in sound, but I use thick gauge strings, downtuned to absurdity, use active pickups and lots of gain. So depending on your style, the effect of the pick on tone will vary. The carbon fiber jazz III works great for me with electric and I won't use anything else for electric, but lately I've been using the Petrucci jazz III for Acoustic. I do like the tone it gives me and the slightly larger size when playing acoustic.
+davidsunhun I know exactly what you are describing.
Shifting from a 'traditional' (thinner) picks to a Jazz III means that you must strike the string harder than before.
A thinner pick gives you a click when it pass over a string and a quite clear note attack very easy to achieve, but the Jazz III does not. The string moves around the Jazz III pick profile unless you strike harder and grip your pick stronger than with conventional picks.
So, you have to change a bit the way you play. The advantage is a very clear attack, much better than 'traditional' picks especially playing fast alternate picking licks, and better control.
At least this is my experience...
Idk, i bought a "Shred pack" of picks, there are few different types of Jazz 3 and none of them is so comfortable to use as Tortex jazz 3 1,0. I personaly find Max Grip and Carbon very slippery and their point is not so sharp. But thats just me, i grind the edge of every pick i use. I make them so sharp, that i cat cut myself
Nice review me personally tho I cannot stand any pick that has a grip on it just dosent feel right I use the 1.14 purple jazz 3 dunlop check them out if you haven't already

I'm so used to the smootheness of the JP signatures(sweeps and shredds) that I'm so uncomfortable with playing standard Jazz 3s or other picks
Still prefer the slicker finish on the regular jazz 3s..the max grip felt a bit too rigid.

Aaron Mifsud , Udate 2 years later! I also have the Venom V Pic. I have a few others too. They are a huge waste of money! They are slippery as hell, unless you get the ones that have writing or holes on them. anyone who says they aren’t slippery has not played shows or practiced for hours at a time with a band. They last nowhere near as long as Dunlop pics, I don’t care what pic you use from them! My Venom V pic has huge divots on the sides from doing only a few pic slides. After doing only one pic slide you will already have a divot on the side. When I use a tortex or a Cool pic, their are no divots left. I can pic slide hundreds of times.
V pics are a gimmick! People think they are cool because they are clear.

Purple Dunlop 1.5mm and file it to the same shape, cheaper and larger so even more grip! That's what I do. What's the big deal with grip?! How hard are you playing hahaha. Lighten the force man and the speed will increase.
Very subjective. For me, the max grip is anything but grippy because I hold my pick really light and the regular jazz 3 without the grip just sticks to my hand. So yeah...

The carbon fibers are not really the best, its better said to be your favorite. Today I bought my first Petrucci's, and I will never use others than these, maybe if Dunlop gives me a sponsorship but it will never happen
