In this Guitar pick review, I look at the Dunlop Jazz III plectrums. I also take a look at the black jazz III vs Red Jazz III guitar picks and see how they sound. The Jazz III plectrums are some of the most popular guitar picks around. Furthermore, many guitar players believe that these are only used for Jazz music. But this is simply not true. The Jazz III picks are exceptionally versatile and can be used for a wide variety of applications. For example, Kirk Hammett of Metallica uses a signature Jazz III. As well as blues guitarist, Joe Bonamassa.

The Jazz III little reds are the best picks available. The Jazz III is the perfect pick, well thought out and great sounding. Anything can be played better with it.

I like the larger Jazz3 red. Black if you drop it it disappears into another dimension

This is very true! Although, I've even lost a luminous pick in broad daylight once. The truth is that once the pick leaves your fingers, it enters a world beyond ours and into an abyss far beyond any human reach...Until one day you find it again in the dryer.

The black one sounds slightly sharper, and the red one sounds a little more mellow /warmer.

The Jazz III Red is the most all-rounder guitar pick ever. Clean sound. Great strike. Smooth.
The Jazz III Black is too stiff. Perhaps it's great for distorted guitar sound. String metal rattle sound appeared in clean sound.
    Great review. Thank you. 🙂

After being a huge fan of the red I bought some black max grips today can't wait to try them out I feel the same way I can't play other picks either I also don't strum chords and primarily play short scale bass

Interested to hear how you found the Jazz III max-grips? :)

The max grip are bad because you can't swivel them to use the sides.

You need to check out the tortex or the ultex jazz iiis if you want the jazz iii shaped picks but with better grip.
    Those are great.

Totally agreed :D the Purple Tortex (1.14) Jazz III was my Number #1 for many years! I have also tried the Ultex Jazz III picks which are also great.

When it comes to the Jazz III it's a love-hate relationship. Can't get past that plastic nylon tone. Plus they're too small to keep between my fingers. The Jazz 3 XLs are a good size, but too much extended tapered point and still has that nylon sound. They should round it off a bit more so it doesn't catch on the strings. Overall both sizes lack the glassy tone that I like to hear from my guitar tone. So I'm sticking with what works. Medium thickness black or shell Celluloid picks. Right now that would be Dunlop celluloids standard shape.
Perfect blend of flex, snap and glassy tone for my Strat. The black celluloids have a slightly snappier attack compared to the shell picks.

I agree with you about the XL's.

Personally, I love the XL’s. I’ll raise you this, Jim Dunlop makes Jazz II’s and a Jazz I with even more rounded points. They aren’t available in XL sizes. I’d wager you’d like the Jazz II in Tortex ;)

Not all Jazz III are Nylon mate. You obviously haven't tried the Jazz III Ultex? It has all that glassiness your talking about.
