As the other person said, there are good unfinished games. The most important aspect of a video game is whether or not you're having fun or if the game engaging you in. That's it.
I used to play a game on my PS2 called Crash Twinsanity. It's an unfinished mess but it has very solid gameplay to the point I replay it once in a while... because it's fun.
Then there are games like Uncharted 4 which I enjoyed the well written narrative and characters but I only played it once when it came out and have no intention of replaying it because there is nothing enganging about it that makes want to come back. Only if I could wipe out my memory of the game's story.

@@czarnakoza9697 It's a video game, not productive work. What is a video game "worth my time"? What does that even mean?
For example, we know Mario games are liked by many people but why? There is nothing special or groundbreaking about them, though they nail the most important part, they're fun, you could replay them again next year and still enjoy them as much unlike the movie games or games with very weak gameplay.
It seems like you guys are too focused on having the next, most groundbreaking thing rather than enjoying the fun we already have. Too worried about metacritic scores, cinematics, top of the line voice acting, pretty graphics instead of just picking a controller and play something actually enjoyable.

Completely story-free "endlessly replayable" battle royale/season pass/multiplayer/looter shooter nonsense that's just drowning the market, or those "endless hours of the same shit" open world games. In fact, the games with heavy emphasis on story often *still* have a *lot* of gameplay to offer.
The fact we're actually in an age where suddenly people say tlou of all games is ruining gaming just speaks of how completely cynical and trying to be miserable gamers have become.
I play games from 20 years ago. Games from 15 years ago. Games from 10 years ago. Games from 5 years ago. Games that came out this year. Why? Because I stay away from the actual crap - the things I mentioned above. In most other categories, games are still churning out amazing title after amazing title.
The biggest problem imo is that gamers nowadays are so obsessed with every game having to be either as incomprehensible as David Lynch (aka anything done even a bit before ever is bad) or at least as difficult as a fromsoft game.

    • @Mangapan
      @Mangapan 17 дней назад +6

Actually it's a bit of a misconception. Video games just like music and movies can be objectively bad. However that does not mean that bad games and movies can't still be enjoyed and liked by groups of people.
The quality of movies and games is very concrete as there are many things you have to take into consideration when developing a game or writing a script for a movie.
Example: Say I were to write a script for a movie. I would have no time to put effort into it and I would be complete inexperienced as well. I could litter the movie full of setups and no payoffs along with a couple of characters with no personality traits. That would make for an objectively bad movie.
There are rules and guidelines that apply for good game design just as with movies. Game balance and difficulty curve are just two of them.

Elden ring is one of the few atypical AAA games that actually felt new and it's basically souls+ in an open world setting.
Playing a new AAA experience today, you will never have anything that you haven't found familiar in RE4 or TLOU. Neither game is bad, but it's the game feel with all of the novelty and nuance removed for RE4 all the interesting gameplay is gone and for TLOU all the character development and dynamics are thrown out for generic cliches and tasteless melodrama instead.

Although, I do agree that its not good when they do reboots and sequels and they change the gameplay completely. I absolutely love story-driven games, but I agree that the gaming industry is turning into hollywood, focusing more on cutscenes and motion-capture acting (probably because it is easier to make and since people are lazy nowadays, they find it easier to watch most of the game, rather than having to put some effort to play it).

This is such an idiotic video. When I first played Last of Us when it was released in 2013, what made it so great wasn't the "camera" . It was the storytelling and its innovative slower, semi-realistic and visceral gameplay. The over the shoulder third person camera was already a popular thing since like 5 years prior with games like Gears, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, Uncharted and Batman. And if you go further back, we had many popular cinematic focused third person games with lots of cutscenes. Shadow of Colossus, Syphon Filter, James Bond, Splinter Cell, Mafia, Hitman. I mean heck, if you play GTA games since GTA3 and only play the main missions, you basically have a linear cinematic third person game on the same vein as Last of Us.
Plus, most people seem to forget the Last of Us had an incredible multiplayer mode called Factions. It was basically a battle royale game before it was even a thing.

I agree, but not entirely: in terms of storytelling, From Software has never been exactly good at it. The story of the world around you is only ever interesting if you actively search for it, and while it's important to have gameplay first (after all, Elden Ring is indubitably a masterpiece), a dark fantasy RPG world *should* have an engaging story. And story it has, but no storytelling- or rather, in the form of item descriptions and online lore searches, which ruin the atmosphere of living everything with personal experience.

I get the appeal of learning new story and lore beats that are told in indirect ways that the player has to put special effort on, and discussing the lore with the community is fun. But only if it's used as a bonus. The problem with FromSoftware games is that is their main storytelling technique, and they barely use anything else. That creates a constant emotional barrier between the player and the world. How the hell are you supposed to form an emotional connection with a character by reading about something they went through in the description of a ring? That's just "Tell, don't show" with extra steps. At best, it feels like I'm studying the world as an archeologist, not experiencing an actual story.

Same for FF7 remake. I found it clunky and just not fun to play, so the story and characters weren’t enough to keep me playing when I could just watch it instead.

I’ve heard this point multiple times and I really think that if you think that you’re probably the type of person who ignored the skill tree completely and just spammed attack and dodge and trial and error’d yourself through the game.
The gameplay is actually surprisingly deep with enemies that adapt to your weapons to keep you switching between them, ways to juggle enemies in the air, more defensive and ranged weapons like the draupnir spear, difficult parrying systems, different shields for different gameplay styles, interesting puzzles that encourage you to think with elements and blending them with magic, cool gear which directly impacts your fighting style I could go on but I don’t think I need to.

Sure some others copy that movie game style, such as HellBlade 2, but i honestly can't say they are the majority, not at all.

MGS successfully did that in 1998 without ACTUALLY removing what makes a game, a game. Easiest example, Psycho Mantis boss fight. What's an example from TLOU that showcases how the devs took full advantage of the fact that it's a video game?

@@XpertGreekGamer You're glossing over the question: "what makes a game a game?". As someone who has a love for storytelling, a video game akin to The Last of Us offers a narrative experience only possible in a game. One where a person can partially control the pacing, choose how they want to approach the world, and explore many scattered details that greatly enhance the world building. I find this "walking sim" experience to be incredibly fulfilling and not needing to be stretched out as an identity in terms of its gameplay. I also have a love for games with extremely stimulating gameplay. Fulfilling, but in a different way and appealing to a different part of the brain. @@XpertGreekGamer I already stated the value. The game is targeted to a person like me who has a love for storytelling. Again, a game like TLOU offers a "narrative experience only possible in a game." I justified this earlier with points. Adding a different style of gameplay would ultimately stretch a game like TLOU thin. This is because, considering the purpose of the game, it would break immersion. Like I said, different games appeal to different parts of the mind. The definition of a game does not have to be so rigid as to exclude people like me. What makes a game a game is cultivating an experience unique to the medium of gaming, and we are still discovering how vast this could be.

From the very start of Metal Gear series, has been about the story with gameplay that pushes the system. Take metal gear: solid and metal gear solid: snake eater, and you can find insane details with crazy gameplay that pushes the limits. He made a playable trailer that was more scary than most horror games. Which resident evil 7 took. Lastly it’s about what people look for in a game that drives the industry.( yes it can be sad, like loot box, micro transactions, and live service) right now it’s about story telling and soul-rip offs (some bad/ some good.) if it’s not for you, show your support to the games you do like. That doesn't change the fact that TLoU and GoW3 are two completely different games. Basically what the guy in this video is saying is that the gameplay of TLoU is objectively bad. But gamers have different tastes, and it's sad to see that so few actually respect that.

@@kingbacon2937 I'm also talking about this channel poster. Not you. A lot of his points lack wisdom. Just because he likes old games doesn't mean they were "real games" and current games are not games anymore. It's silly. Back then we could only wish our games had realistic graphics and cutscenes. Now that we do, suddenly some kids don't like them? The word to describe people like OP is a snob. But he's young. He'll grow out of it.

This is a particular reason why i still love Valve, even in their "cutscenes", they follow a philosophy of never taking control away from the player, a pretty good example is the whole Half-Life series so far, there's no loading screens that take you out of the game, and the whole games are played in one straight line, it's like you're going through the experience of the whole game in real time with Gordon

And it sucks. I love HL2, I have every achievement. But those parts? They suck. TLOU mops the floor with HL2 in that regard and several others, but people are too hiveminded to say it.

What about games with microtransactions, loot boxes and battle royals? The stories are more detailed nowadays, so they can reach the casual gamers as well. Just because you are the kind of person that wants only action without exposition in video games, this doesn't mean that Last of Us ruined gaming.
Check the market now. Most of the games that are released have multiple DLCs at outrageous prices, microtransactions are involved, and they also have bad gameplay.

I personally like Last of Us and Uncharted type games. Heck I like games where story comes first. That being said, I also like JRPG games, CRPGs, action / adventure games, hack & Slash, city builders, racing games, first person shooters, 3rd person shooters, dance games, Metroidvania games etc. My point is, there is a world for all these type of games. I hate the argument of "this is not a video game" as though Crash Banicoot wasn't mostly just holding forward and pressing X and the correct moments.

I hate this argument also, it's like, you can't have fun, this is not a videogame, because of you gaming is dying etc

Just commented the exact same thing lol, I agree fully. These are different games for different types of people. Not everyone likes “movie-games” and that’s fine because a lot of other people do. There’s clearly a market for it or TLOU, Uncharted etc. wouldn’t have remained this popular after so long

@@TheTom20 They don't understand that "fun" is completely subjective. They confuse "fun" and "dumb fun". Dumb fun is perefctly viable but it's only one kind of fun, some people have fun with great stories, some people takes pleasure from slow, precise stealth gameplay, others gets their kick out of strategy or puzzles...
