This is mostly because I suffer from depression. Seeing Audrey and Seymour, who have both led downtrodden lives on Skid Row, finally finding happiness with each other only to be killed one after the other and thus never actually breaking free from Skid Row...it just depresses me even more. Though I do appreciate the world destruction bit and all the effort put into it.

A couple of tidbits you missed. The alloys used to create the internal structure of Audrie 2 were developed by Nasa scientists. Puppeteering the plant took (I think) 56 miles of cable and maintaining its glossy sheen required dozens of gallons of KY Jelly. Finally, it's traditional in the stage play for the voice actor of Audrie 2 to play a bum on the street during the Skid Row musical number, and that happens in the movie, too. That one African-American guy who hits his notes WAY harder than he needs to, that's Levi Stubbs.

I know this video's a year old, but I have something I desperately want to say. So, the songs for this musical were done by an iconic songwriting duo, and I haven't seen anyone bring this up. The screenplay and the lyrics were written by Howard Ashman, who also wrote the lyrics to Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and about half of Aladdin. He couldn't finish Aladdin because he passed away tragically young due to AIDS. (Fun fact: he also wrote the original treatment for Aladdin and pitched it to Disney, so it's because of him really that they made that movie.) The music for the songs was written by Alan Menken, who did the music for basically every Disney renaissance movie. I say the music for the songs because he had never scored a film when this was being made, and he didn't feel confident in that, so the score was written by another composer. After that composer was nominated for best score for this film, Menken was like "Well, I could've done that" so he scored his first film, The Little Mermaid, and won an oscar for it. Menken/Ashman also won best song for the Little Mermaid, and the rest, as they say, is history.

We put on Little Shop at the local theater in Meridian about three years ago. I played the narrator, the radio DJ, the drunk on the street (singing, "That's when you go" before "Downtown"), and the salesman at the end who unleashes Audrey II on the world. Jason Clayton played Seymour, LaQuinton Holliday was Audrey II (and he was flippin' awesome(, Greg Snowden was Mr. Mushnik, Clint Brown KILLED it as The Dentist, and Amy McMinn played Audrey. Amy's father passed away during the play's run, and Amy left to be with her family. Bella Pickard, who was all of sixteen, stepped in and took over for Amy on three hours' notice, and she KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. Eagan Tilghman (son of Todd Tilghman) did the production design. The guy was all of 18 years old, and his set design was a jaw-dropper. Also, the "official" Audrey II prop would have been way too expensive, so Eagan designed one from scratch... and it was MUCH better than what we would have bought. You may have guessed from my rambling, but we were all VERY proud of this one.
By the way, Seymour was a bit darker as a character (Mr. Mushnik was shown to be a decent guy, and Seymour cold-bloodedly sent him to get et), so the original dark ending was more fitting. That play was an absolute BLAST.

The speculation that curtain calls made a difference onstage has a point, but I also think that the stage musical was done in such a (deliberately) low-budget scruffy stylized way that we didn't take the deaths that seriously -- it was all spoofy fun. At the final blackout, vines unrolled from the auditorium ceiling to tickle our heads, and we all laughed and applauded. Onscreen, though I was disappointed at the changed ending I could sort of understand it; it all seemed more "real" and I cared more about Seymour and Audrey.
I also remember hearing that another proposed casting for Audrey in the movie was Madonna. We're so lucky that they ended up with Ellen Greene.

I kid you not, when I was a teenager we had a dentist that was a handsome guy that was infamous for causing patients pain (drilling when the patient isn't numb, etc). We called him Dr. Pain. We could hear patients he did dental work on screaming, including my brother. I didn't scream but I did grab his arm when I felt the drill. He was also a pervert. He squeased my butt while he was walking by once and I told my mom immediately. We never went back to that dentist.

The play is a more complete story than the movie, which is why the whole "everybody dies" ending works. The key thing I and many other fans notice with the show is that Seymour has more of a complete villain arc in the play. He has multiple chances to stop doing bad things, but he pushes along anyway because he's too insecure, poor, and a bit greedy/horny for Audrey. The ending number usually has the cast come out dressed as flowers, plant zombies, or ghosts telling the audience not to feed the plants, because it's a metaphor for consumerism gone wild.
There are more deleted/alternate scenes online if you want to get a better idea of what they were going for adapting it to film, but they still cut a crapton of music and Seymour’s villain arc out, so the directors cut just doesn't work, imho. Plus, it's true, no one wants Audrey (the girl) to die because she's the one truly innocent character in the story. It's nice to see her get a happy ending, even if it comes at the expense of a better moral. I'd like to think that she could help Seymour be a better person afterward, and I'm not the only one who wants to see them attempting to take out an invading alien plant army together in their adorable (totally not queer-coded) power couple way.

@@antifagoat6591 I wholeheartedly agree with this. I like the effort put into the director's cut/original ending, but I much prefer the theatrical version, not just because it's the one I grew up with, but because it works better tonally than the original ending. Especially without all the context.

I did a college production version of this about a decade ago where I was a Chorus member, but I also got to play a couple of minor roles including the First Customer, so naturally I milked the hell out of that bit with a sort of Bugs Bunny meets Mayor Quimby accent - "pahdan me, folks, I couldn't help noticing that stuh-raaaaaaange and in-tur-restin' puh-lant!"

My other role was Bernstein from NBC, who does a verse on The Meek Shall Inherit, a song that got mostly cut from the film where Seymour agonises over the fame he's now gained at the cost of human life and his own principles - footage of a longer filmed version does exist out there but it's kinda low quality I believe. Also, that number was one of the hardest to get right in rehearsals for our show, since we were working with imperfectly timed/lengthed backing tracks that we had to tweek, and the poor Chorus Girls really struggled with the harmonies, especially at the end - after the last big top Cs I'm sure I saw one of the girls leave the stage trying not to burst into tears of embarassment and frustration.

I was in the pit for two different stage productions of this musical. In both locales, the stage directors had to remind the conductors to limit the meter on Feed Me. It is such an absolute blast to play… but the puppeteers could not articulate fast enough when we would inevitably rush the piece.
For the latter, we ended up compromising by upping the meter 20% and adding improv sections for the curtain call version.
