When I saw it in the theater, the movie was delayed 15 minutes do to sound problems.
When the film started jumping, and then melting, there were a bunch of boos and "Oh, come on"s.
Once it was realized that it was part of the movie, it got some big laughs.

That scene was, naturally a callback to her Christmas tragedy story. Audiences found it so ridiculous at the time that they decided to lampoon it and cut her off early this round. Personally, I'd love to see a whole series of Phoebe telling all kinds of ridiculous stories why she hates every celebration. Lol

A personal story about how Aliens completely primed me for this movie. I saw Aliens in the theater when it came out and during the scene where Ripley takes the car-like vehicle to the rescue, the picture starting jumping up and down, which I thought was an interesting effect...until I realized it was actually the film getting caught in the projector. The theater manager came out, apologized, and gave us our money back, asking us to come back some other time.
Then when I went to see Gremlins 2, they had the scene with the film getting messed up. I was thinking "Oh no! Not again!" Then I saw the gremlin hand puppets.
I will now forever tie both Aliens and Gremlins 2 together in my mind.

I had similar experience when the live action Scooby Doo Movie came out. The movie was going good then it got to the part where the creatures revealed themselves to all the young people and the film burned in two. I had expected to see a cartoon Scooby Doo appear and chuckle then we’d go right back to the movie, mainly because of Gremlins 2. It didn’t theater gave us the option to have our money refunded or wait till the film was fixed, we waited 2 and half hours for the film to be fixed and we got to see the rest of the movie.

Pretty obscure, but my favorite reference is in the dentist scene when the Gremlin asks, "Is it safe?" This is a nod to the movie Marathon Man, where Dustin Hoffman is strapped to a dental chair and tortured with a drill by a Nazi dentist who repeatedly interrogates him with the same question.

The VHS and Cable release of the film was altered a tiny bit. Instead of Hulk Hogan in a theatre, the movie acted like the tracking was going out on the VCR before turning to white noise with the gremlins doing shadow puppets in solid black. It then changed like a TV channel to a cartoon of Bugs Bunny doing a double take about seeing a gremlin, and changed again to old footage of John Wayne with a dubbed voice telling the gremlins to get out of the TV set!

It might be even more fun seeing Emily react to each new Gremlin and gag than it is watching the actual movie! And that’s saying something 😁
I saw this wayyyyyy more than the original when I was younger. In fact, I think I’d only seen the the first one once when I was a kid and couldn’t remember much about it, and then when I rewatched it in my 20s I was rather shocked at how dark and unlike the sequel it was (and surprised that it was filmed on the same set as Back To The Future!)! Nowadays when I watch this one I find myself loving how Clamp is an amalgamation of Donald Trump and Ted Turner… and I think I remember reading that the character was supposed to be much more of a villain, but the actor was so charming in them role that it was rewritten to make him more sympathetic.
Oh, and Robert Picardo is still married to the girl Gremlin.

Okay, Gismo's new Spawn quartet, the four that popped off him are:
Daffy (Hyperactive googly eyed Gizmo wannabe)
Mohawk (Frequently considered Stripe Reincarnated, became Spider-Gremlin)
Lenny (Bigger, stronger, dumber, becomes donkey-like, almost always with his partner...)
George (The Gangster looking Mogwai/Gremlin, big lipped, has Lenny climbing on him as Mogwais, smokes cigars).
Lenny & George are references to Of Mice & Men, not to mention Loony Toons Sasquatch/Abominable Snowman is also a frequent reference to Lenny from Of Mice & Men.
Lenny was originally intended to do a Heel-Face Turn, killing Mohawk & George in an Oven to save Gizmo, but the scene was deemed too dark and removed from the script. This sadly means Lenny never became the first good Gremlin, but did allow for Mohawk to become the Spider-Gremlin.

Because Emily likes funny movies, have you already experienced the "Cornetto"-movies? You know, "Shawn of the Dead", "Hot Fuzz" and "The World's End"? Edgar Wright is an very funny director and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a great comedian duo. Next suggestion: Guy Ritchies London Underground movies: "Lock, Stock and two smoking Barrels", "Snatch" and "RocknRolla".
And because Emily is often very emotional, I suggest considering "Big Fish" (2003, Tim Burton). It will definitely move her to tears, but it will be happy tears. For me Big Fish is my favorite Tim Burton movie, better than Edward Scissorhands or Sleepy Hollow. Along the same "happy warm tears" feeling would definitely be "Amelie" (2001).

I never clicked on a video faster. lol so glad you covered this, and so soon after the first. I got to see this in theaters and I absolutely adored it. and yes, the film breaking got us at first. some "aww"s, some "what?"s then laughter when the shadow puppets started.
just so much I love about this movie. but what i loved the most, was the bat gremlin. that is, by far, my favorite creature design in anything ever. I love its face and kinda floppy ears and overall design is just amazing.
I still kinda like this movie more then the first, but its a close run thing. I also remember watching terminator 2 for the first time and seeing the twin scientists as a guard and his t-1000 double and going "Thats the guy from gremlins 2".
I have to say tho, it wasn't till this video that i realized Gizmo said "Gomez" when John Astin showed up. and i had known it was him even the first time i saw it cause i loved the show as a kid. I dunno how i missed that after seeing this so many times.
another semi-fun memory was renting the NES game from blockbuster and getting stuck on the electric gremlin boss fight and not being able to finish the game before we had to return it.

I can't tell you how much I nerded out when I saw that John Astin was playing the janitor fixing the water fountain. It's crazy that my 10 year old brain picked up on that so quickly lol. Always been a bit disappointing that the 'theater' intermission always plays in home video and TV broadcasts now. I almost want somebody to go back and make a 'streaming' version of that segment starting off with a buffering swirl. This was sort of inspired by one of the old William Castle films The Tingler where a segment changed depending on if you saw it in a theater or drive-in.

As for Robert Picardo, a couple good classic flicks to catch him in, if they're not on your list yet, Inner Space (1987) and Legend (1985)... although you've seen him not too long ago as one of the garbage men in The Burbs ;D

Chuck Jones and Dante were good friends. Jones has a cameo in the original Gremlins. Dante named a school after him in Explorers. You should watch Dante's Looney Tunes: Back in Action. He gets Looney Tunes. Something the people behind the Space Jam movies clearly didn't (and Chuck Jones told them that to their faces).

Dante also directed a segment of The Twilight Zone movie where he has a monster that spins around just like the Tasmanian Devil cartoon character. If I remember, it makes a similar sound when spinning. It comes out of a kid's imagination that can create anything he wants and a television set cracks and out it comes.

I love this one. It's crazy and I love it's self-aware to make fun of the first movie. I also love that they add another aspect of the supernatural to the Gremlins: reincarnation. According to director Joe Dante, Mohawk in this movie is actually Stripe, the main Gremlin from the first movie reincarnated. That's why he tortures Gizmo. Mohawk remembers Gizmo killing him when he was Stripe.

This was and is still one of my favorite childhood films, I still have a stuffed Mogwai I've since before I can remember. Anyways couple of facts about the behind the scenes:
When Christopher Lee comes back in the lab after the Gremlins start ransacking the place he is carrying a pod from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I believe he had a role in one of the remakes, but the biggest Easter Egg is that Gizmo was watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers in the first film. WB uses the joke a lot including having one of the original actors in Looney Toons Back in Action holding a pod on screen repeating "You're Next."
Also the Microwave with Marge sequence was meant to capture an intoxicated cook in such a way that if you really pay attention she calls the dish by three different names in the segment because she's so drunk she can't remember the name of the dish she's making.
Also the scene with Hulk Hogan was made funnier by the fact that the usher who came and got him used to be an announcer/interviewer and even a Referee in the WWF when Hogan was still wrestling.
The into with Bugs and Daffy has multiple versions including one where Daffy gets to name the movie and he keeps calling it Daffy Duck presents Gremlins 2, or Daffy Duck's Gremlins sequel. And bugs keeps simplifying it.

I kinda want Joe Dante and Martin Scorsese to appear in "Gremlins III" as each other just because watching Dante direct De Niro and Scorsese going nuts with puppet gremlins or something would make me very happy. 😁

This movie may have been a spoof but it was so crazy sometimes its just the vibe people need after a list of super serious movies. That goofy nature fits the gremlins so well. I applaud you on the grampspire quote. It was a funny quick on the fly joke.
This has to be one of the best gremlins too reaction. You brought your own take to the jokes in the movie along with your own jokes. Including the kete and peel video at the end was a great touch too. Just adds to the already great reaction.
I think the actor you mightve recognised was a young Raymond Cruise (the messanger role) but looks very similar to being Wilmer Valderrama who plays Fez in that 70s show and was in NCIS as Nick Torres. In this movie a young Raymond Cruise looks very similar to an older Wilmer look alike as in NCIS. Raymond Cruise got a bit expanded in facial features as time went on so he looks a bit different in more recent pictures. Maybe that comparison is all just me though.
