I love this movie and it's so underrated. It shows what a talented director can do in the back lot of movie studio (I've been on this street) with a solid cast and a simple story that is completely character driven. It's a classic because it's about aspects of human nature that never change, so here it is 33 years later and it's still funny. Thirty years from now it will still be funny.

Spot on. I loved this movie as a kid, and I'm never surprised how much I still love it to this very minute.
The aspects of boredom, curiosity, paranoia, (especially within the confines of a suburban cul de sac), are a study in sociology.
That said, it's also hilarious! Imagine a 10 year old (me) yelling "What have you got in the cellar, Herr Klopek?!" at random. Bruce Dern is the M.V.P. of the film.

My family loves this movie. As broad as the comedy gets at times, there's also quite a lot of very subtle bits. It wasn't until a 3rd or 4th watch that we realized that Art accidentally eats dogfood while Carol could have stopped him but didn't.

Yesssss!!! I absolutely love The Burbs!!!
Fun Fact: The Burbs was filmed on the Universal backlot; in particular the Colonial Street area. This area of the backlot has been used as the location for Buffy the Vampire Slayer (both series & film), Gremlins, Dragnet (which I recommend you watch), Sabrina The Teenage Witch & House of 1000 Corpses etc.
Most famously, Colonial Street was the location of 1313 Mockingbird Lane; home of The Munsters. In The Burbs, Corey Feldmans character lives in The Munster House.
More recently, Colonial Street has been used as the location for Wisteria Lane in Desperate Housewives, as well appearing as the location for music videos from the likes of The Offspring, Bring Me The Horizon, Boxcar Racer & Nelly.
Also, Brother Theodore (Ruben Klopek) was the voice of Gollum in the animated version of The Hobbit & Return of The King.

The old man with the poodle is Gale Gordon, longtime foil of Lucille Ball on her TV series as "Mr. Mooney" [The Lucy Show 1962-68 and "Harry Carter" [Here's Lucy 1968-74]. He was about 83 in this movie and passed away in 1995. Many other TV shows as well. Our Miss Brooks for example. But it's Bruce Dern that kills me laughing in this picture. Henry Gibson, the Doctor, is a comedian and veteran of movies and TV show, esp the Rowan and Martin's Laugh In show from 1968-73. He also appeared as the Nazi Leader in the Blues Brothers, 1980. Young Tom Hanks dod a lot of comedy movies before becoming "TOM HANKS" the mega star. But he had done the more memorable "Big" and "Nothing in Common" in the late 1980's.

Another interesting fact is the actor who plays Uncle Reuben is played by Brother Theodore Gottlieb who went from the sole holocaust survivor from his family, to becoming a dark comedian in the US. He also came from a rich family and Albert Einstein knew them and helped him get into the US.

  • @yorgle11
    @yorgle11 12 часов назад

28:00 That darker ending might have been really good if they set it up such that the audience also gets fooled. Ray doesn't just die because he's stupid, so the audience suddenly realizes they would have been killed too, and the killers got away with it plausibly.
They could even show the others realizing they were wrong and lamenting the "accident" they think Ray died from. For it to work though the audience would need to buy into it being a believable outcome. That could make a good scary ending. Totally different mood though, and I love the lighthearted way this version went.

My pet theory is that Rumsfield isn't an actual Vietnam vet, but a guy who either 1) got rejected or 2) dodged but felt left out afterward and decided to immerse himself into the persona & went into army surplus sales to complete the act and live the lie. Because he exhibits none of the competence or equipment of an actual experienced soldier. Joe Dante confirmed that he made his money from weapons sales, but didn't say if he was a legitimate veteran.

I was really hoping you would do The Burbs. For pure fun, Probably my favourite Tom hanks film.. Loved Bruce Dern in this film, About a 9 on the tension scale.. Tom Hanks actually admitted he was a a little bit of a deva on set at the beginning of this film. He was just entering his Oscar serious phase and and was making rather uncool slightly arrogant suggestions to the director Dante , like cut/sack his onscreen kid out of the movie and making the script darker for his character who in his mind ,was having a nervous break down because because he had secretly lost his job. He actually plays this character out at the beginning.. Great Idea but I like the lighter approach they went with in the end. Still as always great reaction from you two. Ps.. I'd love to see your reaction to Buba Ho Tep..

Okay, you guys need to watch more Joe Dante stuff. Don’t forget “Matinee!” 😊
My brain isn’t working today. I can’t remember if it was the original intention but they took it out or if it’s actually in the movie that Tom Hanks’ character got fired before the movie began and hasn’t told his wife yet and that’s why he’s home all day pretending it’s a vacation and eventually going a little nuts. Am I making that up?

No, it was a deleted subplot. The footage only survives in the workprint which is available on the Shout! Factory Blu-ray. The late great Kevin McCarthy did a one-shot appearance as his boss in the nightmare sequence. There's also an alternate ending where Carrie Fisher admits that she knew he was fired the whole time from the night the came home from work when they're standing out on the street.

@@Theomite Cool. Brain hasn’t completely fallen to bits, then. It would not have been a good idea to include that back then but it would play very differently and pack a harder punch now.

I love it when you guys do movies like this. I never heard of it and probably never would have watched it myself.
Still hoping you guys get to The Phantom eventually.

I *really* like this movie, but...to digress from some other comments - I think The 'Burbs is about properly-rated.

Speaking of Gremlins, I just recognized one of the trash collectors - he played Mr. Futterman in Gremlins & was also the gun shop owner in The Terminator.
