  • The Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell spoke before the Cubs played the D-Backs and was asked about the Trade Deadline. He was Poignant about the season and future plans “I look at the total number of games we have left to prove ourselves,” Counsell Said “That’s our job. The way we played the first 100-ish games of the season has not left us very much room for error." “We have to play really well to get back in this and put ourselves into position. I don’t think that it’s determined by the next 10 days.” Mick tried to desifer what he meant that talks about players that could be traded. The Cubs did Ink 10 of their 20 Picks draft picks including Cam Smith the first rounder out of FSU
    Cubs vs D-Backs 1:20
Shota Imanaga (8-2, 2.97 ERA) vs Brandon Pfaadt (4-6, 3.97 ERA)

As a fan, I'm only interested in getting players who will contribute in 2025 and beyond. The Cubs need to punt on this season. Their big move was winning 7 out of 8 before the break, and now they've lost 4 of 5. So they're basically running in place. Time to focus on the future, which could be bright if they don't screw it up.

Great analysis as usual Mick. Time to trade the vets and shed salary. Taillon, Hoerner, Happ, can all be moved for value. Plus, we cannot keep blocking the prospects. I would love to pick up Vlad Jr. Dansby to 3b and bring up Vazquez.

It's not just that they don't score against the ELITE pitchers ...it's that they get shutout and you look at the boxscore ...and don't even RECOGNIZE they guys that shut them down. That's happened many times this season.... Somebody I've never heard of...throwing 6-7 innings of 2 hit ball... against us.

My picks to be traded are Jameson Taillon, Christopher Morel and Drew Smyly. The Cubs have to start trusting the pitching depth in their system and they can fill the gap of a traded Taillon. For as much of a trooper Morel has been at third base, he’s just not consistent at the plate. Drew Smyly is pitching well right now and in the last year of his contract. Every playoff contender can use an extra lefty.
The Jed/Carter team said, a few weeks ago, that Happ won’t be traded, so, there goes my other pick.
My other recommendation is that the Cubs pay Justin Steele to yell at this team every day because, apparently, they fell asleep again!

LOOOOL Honestly it’s for the best. The saddest part of all this is the future. This FO really was hoping on this team and they got F’D big time by the so called “stars” of this team. Dansby might be the biggest disappointment signing in the history of the Cubs. Stellar D but you don’t pay that kind of cash when you have Vasquez who can make a lot of those defensive -lady and can really get it at short. They don’t have big boppers and big time players. I’m seriously doubting they have that down on the farm. They may have some talent, but I don’t see the Bobby Witt Jr’s, Graysons, Jasson Dominguez’s, Spencer Jones’s etc…. This isn’t the same farm as far as STUDS go as they had in 2014-2017. It’s gonna be rough folks. This FO doesn’t spend money when they print it, and forget about it. Sometimes I feel guilty about also being a Yankee fan from a kid but their season the last month has been so similar, it’s eerie. The offense has disappeared. 2 STARS are keeping that team alive right now. That’s what STUDS do.

FO needs to grow up and sell what they can. Couple relievers, and one actual position player. Dont care if its Happ or Nico. The team is now stuck with Bellinger in 2025, so that has to factor in. The team NEEDS to open room for these propects, or trade them for major league talent

I think that the Cubs will be silent at the trade deadline. They really don't have much to trade that anybody would want. I'm not trading Nico. He's proved that he can hit and is a gold glove defender. Talk is that we have players in the system to replace him. We have no idea if any of them will be able to hit major league pitching and none can play gold glove 2nd base. I am skeptical if any of our minor league players can hit in the majors. See the following: Morel, Mervis, and worse of all PCA. All killed at AAA none can hit in the Majors.

      "Don't have much to trade":
-Taillon is a high value 4th or 5th starter for a contender, and is playing his best he can now. Sell high before he age/talent implodes next year, and you drop $20M.
-Bellinger: lots of teams are interested(CF/1B flex, solid hitter, great baserunner)
-Hoerner: definitely tradeable and teams are asking. Having a down year and still trade value. To your farm skepticism, that's fair. And, 2B is arguably your deepest position along with OF. Certainly one of the following will stick at MLB level at 2B: Shaw, Triantos, Morel(as a backup/platoon, he's better fielding there anyway)
-Happ- teams asking, and he's not worth $20M annually...defense is aging/declining, hitting is streaky every year.

  • @niren4819
    @niren4819 Месяц назад +1

The last 2 games pretty much stick a fork in this group as they are constructed. Now we have to hope that Jed & the FO have a plan for how to remake the team that creates momentum for the offseason and 2025. I poke around fangraphs roster resource a lot and the path to creating an edge seems pretty hard unless they spend money or get lucky with trade partners. 80k fans show up to see a bottom tier team and cant score any runs to at least make it entertaining, pretty pathetic.
The farm system hope and relying on prospects could be the next let down forthcoming if the roster is not fixed. If the cubs think Caissie, Shaw, Ballesteros, and Cam Smith are the core of the next contending team, well get ready to wait for them to learn on the job.
This year's injuries to Wicks, Ben Brown, and Horton are also big setbacks for the rotation to get experience and innings build up for 2025. Jed should probably be fired for this year, but over the last 4 years, he's done what Ricketts wanted so he's probably got a leash to see the plan through.
Right now it does not seem that the cubs are good at anything or have any competitive advantage in scouting, player development, etc. That to me is the most concerning aspect going forward.

This Cubs team, again, like all the Cubs teams since 2018 has no heart. They don’t ever feel a sense of urgency to win. They all take an attitude of it is a long season and one game doesn’t make a difference, even when you are 1/2 game out with a week left in the season. Seen that scenario play out way too many times the past 6-7 years. Need some leadership, on the field and in the dugout with some fire in their bellies. Give me a Lou Pinella type manager. Nick Castellenas is a perfect example of one who had some fire and was hungry to WIN and the Cubs didn’t keep him because he didn’t fit the Cubs laid back, passionless way - he is now on a team with lots of fire and passion and seems to be doing pretty well…

Keep the starting staff, but add a true ace. Get a good corps of relief pitchers, which in today’s stat geek game is the most important piece of the puzzle due to starters rarely making it out the 5th inning. Most positions players can be jettisoned. The only two I would keep are Hoerner and Happ. And give me a farm system that actually develops players to fit into the team with a purpose and are ready to play when brought up, rather than developed for trade bait. Cubs farm system, from a practical and, most importantly, philosophical perspective is light years behind the Braves, Dodgers and Rays…
